RamsMaineiacKeymaster
I’ve not been liking McVay’s tendency to begin calling it conservative way too early in the game.
I don’t think we will encounter the problem next week, as I expect we will have our backs against the wall most of the game.

RamsMaineiacKeymasterBack in the 90s I worked for a company in Delaware which, as a result of their partnership with the NFL, had tickets to every game at every stadium. I was frequently able to get access to these tickets for the Rams because, well, they were the Rams in the 90s. Being the masochist I was, I usually tried to get the 49ers game, because every year, “this was going to be the year.” I was at this game in 99. This was the year. 🙂
RamsMaineiacKeymasterMy reaction to the GB game… grand disappointment.
We are running a 4 game losing streak to teams with a > 500 record, and are 1-4 against winning teams overall.
Grand disappointment.

RamsMaineiacKeymasterIt will free up a weekend?
RamsMaineiacKeymasterI am most annoyed that Jackson couldn’t suck it up for another 10 games. That is a terrible lack of resilience. A more mature professional would have just collected a paycheck, moved on at the end of the season, and not created this self-gratifying drama. That a player cannot even honor a one year deal is ridiculous.
RamsMaineiacKeymasterI do not need to have attended workouts or “every game in a region” to know that a WR who has recently weighed in under 150 pounds, is not a second round draft pick.
Trent, the excusologist, lost me less than 90 seconds in to the video.
RamsMaineiacKeymasterI’ll take a little of this heart, minus the getting all beat to hell. lol
The embodiment of leaving everything on the field.
Matthew Stafford had one of the greatest mic’d up moments ever…

Or some of this:
https://youtu.be/roVsVhefoo4RamsMaineiacKeymaster“I’m just excited to be somewhere that I know wants me and appreciates me” …
I guess a $134-million contract, which made you the 5th highest paid player in 2020, wasn’t enough appreciation? It certainly wasn’t enough to warrant or expect top five play on his part. Good luck Jared. See you on the schedule in 2021.
Personally I would have been more overjoyed for the Aaron Rodgers scenario, even give his age. I think we have 1-3 years to make this squad composition deliver, before age and departures shift the opportunity. I remember how quickly it all changed between 1999 and 2001, and I don’t think this team is much different, although maybe the degradation will come from more reasons. So be it Stafford or Rodgers, win now.
RamsMaineiacKeymasterI am just realizing Goff essentially cost the Rams nine draft picks:
- Four first-round pick (2016,2017, 2022, 2023)
- Two second-round picks (2016, 2016)
- Three third-round picks (2016, 2017, ?)
Six on the way in and three to unload him.
He seems like a nice guy, so I wish him well, but ouch.

RamsMaineiacKeymasterI get that you can do that, but given that we just lost a playoff game in which arguably it was not our Ds best performance, that would suck if his attention was not 100% on game.
FWIW, publicly the Chargers are saying they interviewed him today, so yet another post where my opinion / concern is moot. This is becoming a trend.

RamsMaineiacKeymasterI don’t think McVay is envious per se, but he knows what he has.
In looking at the eight QBs for teams that made this round of the playoffs, where would you put Goff? I think it would be hard to argue that Rodgers, Brady, Mahomes, and Brees aren’t in a completely different tier than Goff. At best you might say Allen, Mayfield and Jackson are even, but I’m not sure. Its just disappointing. The OL is clearly a huge priority, but I don’t see Goff ever reaching the level of those top QBs and we sure did dedicate that level of cap to the position.
All this said, we are stuck with him, and at a minimum I will concede he is better than average, so replacing him with an upgrade, given the lack of picks and cap is going to be impossible, so my opinion is moot.

RamsMaineiacKeymasterHow does that happen so quickly after our playoff loss. When did they interview him and/or other options, during playoff week practices?
RamsMaineiacKeymasterNo major thoughts yet as to his potential, just glad for the win, but as a point of comparison, I pulled the other Rams QBs first NFL Games as a Rams Starter, since Warner:
John Wolford (1/3/2020), 22 of 38, 231 yards, 0 TD 1 INT, 64.7 QB Rating, 56 yds rushing. Rams beat the Cardinals 18-7.
Sean Mannion(12/31/2017), 20 of 34, 169 yards, 0 TD 0 INT, 53.1 QB Rating, 0 yds rushing. Rams lose to the 49ers 34-13.
Jared Goff (11/20/2016), 17 of 31, 134 yards, 0 TD 0 INT, 65.8 QB Rating, 11 yds rushing. Rams lose to the Dolphins 14-10.
Austin Davis (9/7/2014), 16 of 23, 192 yards, 0 TD 1 INT, 76.7 QB Rating, 0 yds rushing. Rams lose to the Vikings 34-6.
Sam Bradford (9/12/2010), 32 of 55, 253 yards, 1 TD 3 INT, 53.1 QB Rating, 4 yds rushing. Rams lose to the Cardinals 17-13.
Ryan Fitzpatrick (11/27/2005), 19 of 30, 301 yards, 3 TD 1 INT, 117.4 QB Rating, 23 yds rushing. Rams beat the Texans 33-27.
Marc Bulger (10/13/2002), 14 of 21, 186 yards, 3 TD 0 INT, 134.1 QB Rating, -1 yds rushing. Rams beat the Raiders 34-13.
Kurt Warner (9/12/1999), 28 of 44, 309 yards, 3 TD 2 INT, 88.2 QB Rating, -1 yds rushing. Rams beat the Ravens 27-10.Absolutely not saying I would rather Wolford over a functioning Goff, but a thumb on the throwing hand is a pretty important appendage. That said, I think he played fine for a first game, and he is in good company, with Fitzpatrick, Bulger, and Warner being the others QBs with a win in their first game.
I will say I am concerned with the offense no matter who QBs. It has been two games without an offensive TD, under both Goff and Wolford, and that sucks going into the playoffs.
RamsMaineiacKeymasterYes. yes we can.

Comparatively:
Wilson 32 drop backs, sacked 5 times, hit 8 times = 2TDs and QBR of 93.9.
Goff 43 drop backs, sacked 3 times, hit 9 times = no TDs and a QBR of 61.6.RamsMaineiacKeymasterHis consistency, with turning over the ball, spans two seasons not just one game. So OL, yeah I would say that’s an area of improvement, especially yesterday, but its a second place for me.
It doesn’t explain his sliding a yard short of a first down, or the couple of times he seemed unwilling to run up a gap when nothing was available, or most of all that that god awful decision to throw the ball to Diggs. There was nowhere near enough pressure to explain his decision making on that play.
Also, Wilson has been pressured far more over the course of the season than Goff. Yesterday, he was sacked more and hit just as many times, and yet still he put together two TD drives where Goff came away with nothing.

RamsMaineiacKeymasterOf course the QB is going to be scrutinized. In looking at other “playoff caliber” QBs, how does Goff compare to any of the seven QBs that have already clinched a playoff spot for their teams (Rodgers, Brees, Brady, Wilson, Mahomes, Roethlisberger, Allen)? Is he better than any of them? Would you not take every single one of these other QBs over Goff if you could? My frustration is that Goff’s agent negotiated a top 3-6 QB salary for five or so seasons, and we are getting nowhere near top 3-6 QB play. Are we even getting top half play?
Another perspective, in looking at all the major financial bets that the Rams have made in shaping this team, across all positions, which player is playing worse in their defined role, or having a greater impact on the Rams ability to win at a high level this season?
Top Cap Hits 2020
- Jared Goff – $28.8MM
- Aaron Donald – $25.0MM
- Tyler Higbee – $9.1MM
- Robert Woods – $8.4MM
- Leonard Floyd – $6.7MM
- Andrew Whitworth – $6.6MM
- Rob Havenstein – $6.2MM
- Jalen Ramsey – $6.2MM
- Johnny Hekker – $4.7MM
- Troy Hill – $4.4MM
- Austin Blythe – $4.0MM
- Michael Brockers – $3.8MM
- Cooper Kupp – $3.4MM
- John Johnson – $2.3MM
- Josh Reynolds – $2.3MM
- Samson Ebukam – $2.3MM
Whitworth is injured, but other than that, who among these high rollers has been more disappointing?
I know no one wants to hear complaints, but I have grievances…
RamsMaineiacKeymasterAdd this his third place standing in the league this season with 17 turnovers, just one behind Kirk Cousins and two behind Wentz.

RamsMaineiacKeymasterThat was Jared Goff's 23rd game with a turnover since the start of last season, the most in the NFL, per @ESPNStatsInfo

RamsMaineiacKeymasterI was imprecise in what I thought was meaningless. The ability to pull off comebacks is ultimately important, and the QB plays a key role in that ability. What I think is meaningless is the statistic of # of game winning drives, as a pure number or % frequency. Certain QBs are just presented with fewer opportunities to come from behind. My position is Goff is not a good QB when behind and the QB needs to step up—I believe his performance is pretty below average when faced with adversity.
2020 When Behind by 1-8 Points
1. Deshaun Watson (Houston Texans), 134.4 QBR, 9 TDs, 0 INT
2. Baker Mayfield (Cleveland Browns), 132.6 QBR, 10 TDs, 1 INT
3. Russell Wilson (Seattle Seahawks), 127.3 QBR, 9 TDs, 2 INT
4. Taysom Hill (New Orleans Saints), 121.6 QBR, 6 TDs, 1 INT
5. Gardner Minshew (Jacksonville Jaguars), 115.6 QBR, 8 TDs, 2 INT
6. Patrick Mahomes (Kansas City Chiefs), 111.5 QBR, 8 TDs, 1 INT
7. Matthew Stafford (Detroit Lions), 105 QBR, 3 TDs, 0 INT

14. Kirk Cousins (Minnesota Vikings), 100.3 QBR, 6 TDs, 3 INT
15. Josh Allen (Buffalo Bills), 98.9 QBR, 5 TDs, 1 INT

18. Lamar Jackson (Baltimore Ravens), 92.7 QBR, 2 TDs, 1 INT
19. Kyler Murray (Arizona Cardinals), 90.5 QBR, 4 TDs, 1 INT
20. Mitchell Trubisky (Chicago Bears), 89.8 QBR, 1 TDs, 0 INT
21. Teddy Bridgewater (Carolina Panthers), 87.2 QBR, 4 TDs, 4 INT
22. Carson Wentz (Philadelphia Eagles), 84.6 QBR, 6 TDs, 3 INT
23. Ryan Tannehill (Tennessee Titans), 80.6 QBR, 3 TDs, 3 INT
24. Jared Goff (Los Angeles Rams), 79.2 QBR, 2 TDs, 3 INT
25. Cam Newton (New England Patriots), 76.4 QBR, 1 TDs, 3 INT
26. Daniel Jones (New York Giants), 74.6 QBR, 3 TDs, 4 INT
27. Ryan Fitzpatrick (Miami Dolphins), 74.4 QBR, 1 TDs, 3 INT
28. Sam Darnold (New York Jets), 65.3 QBR, 1 TDs, 1 INT
29. Matt Ryan (Atlanta Falcons), 60.1 QBR, 0 TDs, 4 INT
30. Drew Lock (Denver Broncos), 57.8 QBR, 1 TDs, 3 INT
31. Alex Smith (Washington Football Team), 54.5 QBR, 1 TDs, 3 INT
32. Brandon Allen (Cincinnati Bengals), 25.9 QBR, 0 TDs, 1 INTI recognize that no one is saying Goff is having good year in the clutch in 2020, but I don’t think he was much better last year and I could not find career based situational stats.
- This reply was modified 3 years, 5 months ago by RamsMaineiac.
RamsMaineiacKeymasterAlso, on the Game Winning drive front I am not sure its a measurable/meaningful stat, because the context of does your team get behind in the first place is important. For example, Kurt Warner only had 4 in 50 starts with the Rams (8%), but I would take him in the clutch over Goff every time. Bulger had 16 out of 95 starts (17%).
In the division:
Goff has 8 GWDs in 65 starts (12%)
Russell Wilson has 30 in 138 starts (22%)
Jimmy Garappolo has 7 in 32 starts (22%)
Kyler Murray has 5 in 27 starts (19%)Heck, former Rams back up Blake Bortles has 8 in 73 starts (11%)
QBs with a similar number of starts include:
Mariota has 15 in 61 starts (25%)
Dak Prescott has 15 in 69 starts (22%)
Nick Foles has 12 in 55 starts (22%)
Deshaun Watson has 10 in 48 starts (21%)
Baker Mayfield has 7 in 40 starts (18%)
Jameis Winston has 11 in 70 starts (16%)
Mitchell Trubisky has 7 in 45 starts (16%)
Wentz has 10 in 66 starts (15%)
Patrick Mahomes has 6 in 42 starts (14%)Current active leaders
Drew Brees has 53 in 283 starts (19%)
Tom Brady has 47 in 295 starts (16%)https://www.pro-football-reference.com/leaders/gwd_active.htm
I guess my point is, Being clutch is more of a gut feel and I don’t think Goff is known as a QB who is know for his grit and determination to carry a team in adversity.

RamsMaineiacKeymasterIn my life:
1. Warner
2. Bulger
3. Everett
4. GoffSo from another angle, better than Sam Bradford, Tony Banks, and Miller in the waning years of his career. Hardly high praise.
That is exactly how I am feeling about the 5th highest paid player in the NFL in 2020. Very disappointed. He has become a liability to this team and I for one am done hoping for a upside. In four years He has not progressed or improved in a manner than warrants making him a cornerstone of this team. He is too hot and cold and inconsistency is really a terrible trait for a QB. This reminds me a bit of Ferragamo in that regard. Personally, I am ready to let him go in 2022, when the cap hit is palatable, and roll the dice with someone new.
RamsMaineiacKeymasterThey play the AFC East and NFC East this coming year. That will mask any minor steps backwards. That said the new logo should cost them at least two games.
Goff/RB/OL are the biggest ? in my mind.
RamsMaineiacKeymasterSaw this online with the comment, unsee this….
RamsMaineiacKeymasterAll I got to say is fuck the “creative agency” that came up with this crap.
A blight on the legacy of Rams marks and logos and I will not buy one piece of shitty apparel until it changes.
RamsMaineiacKeymasterThis is the worst thing ever.
Even his eSports team has a better logo
