Dolphins trade WR Tutu Atwell to Rams for RB Jarquez Hunter

The Los Angeles Rams aren’t done with Tutu Atwell after all. They have acquired their former wide receiver in a trade with the Miami Dolphins in exchange for running back Jarquez Hunter, the team announced on Thursday.

The Rams are bringing back a receiver they drafted in the second round in 2021 who spent the past five seasons with the team. Atwell was a steady producer from 2022 to 2024, catching 99 passes for 1,343 yards and four touchdowns, and Los Angeles re-signed him last offseason to a one-year, $10 million deal.

However, Atwell fell out of the rotation quickly and finished with just six catches for 192 yards and a touchdown on 15 targets. He was often a healthy scratch down the stretch of the season as the Rams leaned into three-tight end sets and had to fix their special teams units on the fly — and Atwell didn’t contribute to that phase.

But now, the Rams are bringing Atwell back. They feel better about their special teams numbers and are still searching for a dependable No. 3 receiver behind Puka Nacua and Davante Adams.

Hunter was a fourth-round pick in 2025, but he was pushed out of playing time by the steady presence of Kyren Williams and Blake Corum, as well as Ronnie Rivers, who contributes on special teams.

The Rams will take on $1.075 million of Atwell’s contract for this season, marking a difference of nearly $9 million from what they paid him last year. They will incur a cap hit of around $250,000 from Hunter’s deal as part of the trade.

The Rams are now likely to keep just three running backs on their 53-man roster, but they will have to decide how many wide receivers to keep beyond Nacua, Adams and Atwell, with Xavier Smith and Jordan Whittington filling special teams roles and sixth-round rookie CJ Daniels enjoying a busy training camp and preseason.

If they sign Donald, maybe they can trade him to Dallas for CB Cobie Durant.

While I really disliked the Atwell pick when the Rams drafted him, I grew to appreciate the role that he played for the Rams. Barring injuries to other players, I won’t expect him to see the field much, but I’m glad that he’s back.

Maybe it means they werent crazy about the WRs they had on the roster. I would think Whittington or Mumpfield is getting cut?

It certainly makes you wonder about the motivation behind it. I like what Whittington brings to special teams, so I hope he sticks around. Maybe they like Daniels better than Whittington? They have similar frames, but Whittington is faster. I’d be surprised if they were already giving up on Mumpfield. Granted he doesn’t appear to be a star in the making, but I thought he looked like he could be a reliable contributor.

Another thing that I like about this is that If the Rams knew they weren’t going to keep Hunter, then getting anything for him is good as far as I’m concerned. I do wish that Atwell could contribute to the return game though.

    Speed v. speed.

    Atwell has speed.

Except for Smith, no other WR currently still with the Rams has speed.

Yeah, I don’t think they brought him in to be the #3. He wasn’t the #3 last year, so why would he be that guy this year?

His job is to come in and stretch the defense vertically. He wasn’t worth that at $10m, but he’s worth it for $1m.

And there’s just really no spot for Hunter that can’t be filled by the PS guys.

“Out there,” I’ve seen some people say that Atwell is by default the $3.

I don’t think it’s the case at all that Atwell will be a true #3. Rather, it looks to me like him, Whit, and Mumph all have completely different traits (speed; YAC; short area quicks…respectively)–and that they will all share the #3 spot, and each get snaps just based on the situation.

Love this move with TuTu. The offense needed a player who could stretch the defense. And he won’t cost $10 mil like last time.

As an aside, I haven’t been here in a couple of years (selling my home and moving to a new area). I cannot find a new post button. Can someone give this old man some some pointers?

    Thanks in advance.

Not sure what that means. Do you mean an avatar?

Hi Oz. Yeah, for 1 million Tutu is a steal. He’ll make 4 or 5 huge plays this year.

There is no New Post button. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the home page, and you will find a box just sitting there, waiting for you to create a new post.

Welcome back. I was wondering what you were up to.
