We ended up missing the playoffs.

At least we have a week off next week. We have Jacksonville, at home. In other words, our losing streak should come to end.

I am blaming the coaches. You know who you are.

We just aren’t quite good enough in a number of areas.

Stafford a couple of bad decisions and a couple of bad throws.

Oline didn’t protect a few times and didn’t open holes as much as earlier in the season.

    RBs were okay.

Let them gain too much on the ground on first down a couple too many times.

I think we are short one more good cornerback.

How come other teams just seem better than the rams?

The Rams aren’t strong enough as a team to give away so many points. Against poor to mediocre teams, perhaps. But not against good teams. Their offense just isn’t strong enough to come back from those turnovers, and Stafford isn’t healthy enough to bring them back or stop being a turnover machine.

Heresy, I know, but I think it’s time to bench him, let him heal. Play Perkins instead. If the Rams can make the playoffs, bring Stafford back. If not, get him ready for next season.

Obviously, that’s not what the Rams will do. They’ve invested so much in him, they’ll ride that train until the bitter end, win, lose or draw. But it may just be that he’s one and done, if they keep playing him while he’s hurt. Back, throwing arm, ankle, and the likelihood of brand new injuries on top of that . . .

I think their “all in” strategy is biting them already, and showing how thin they are in too many areas. Forced to play a UDFA like Koski at punt returner, or risk Kupp getting injured, etc. They’ve lacked early picks for far too long, which prevents them from upgrading talent in key spots. O-line, inside backer, corner, safety, return teams, etc.

Had really high hopes for this season. But they’re fading. As always, I want them to prove me wrong.

My reaction to the GB game… grand disappointment.

We are running a 4 game losing streak to teams with a > 500 record, and are 1-4 against winning teams overall.

    Grand disappointment.

Because they have better O lines and protection for their Qbs and they have better corner backs and safeties than the Rams.

Repeating the same thing and expecting different results Mcvay is insane. Axe Morris and Joe D.

I have similar thoughts. They traded a 2nd and 3rd for Miller to be all in for this year, and he’s not really a free agent signing option. So they lose picks they need on a rental and on top of it, turns out that being “all in” for this year is not even working. Not if they keep playing like this.

The defense? Someone wrote a good post somewhere else (I posted it here: http://theramshuddle.com/topic/on-the-gb-game-media-twitter-highlights-etc/#post-134216 ) and the essence is, the offense and special teams handed GB 20 points and that was the difference in the game. This one was not on the defense.

Here’s that bit. It’s just succint and ready so instead of writing it myself I will just quote the guy:

The Rams offense/special teams gifted the Packers 20 pts today via 1) Stafford’s fumble at the Rams 6, 2) a missed 4th down conversion at their own 29, 3) a punt return fumble at their own 27 & 4) Stafford’s pick-6! Those 4 turnovers in their own territory resulted in 20 pts. The D gave up 16 pts outside those turnovers that gave GB the ball in scoring position each time.

It seems as though the Rams will finish the year either one game on either side of .500. I’m assuming they beat Jacksonville next week but I’m certainly not considering a gimme, however. In the off-season I expect to hear stories coming from the Rams about how they got away from being who they are, or not playing Rams football or something of that ilk, but the problems seem bigger than that. I appreciate that this all-in approach comes from the right place, striking while the iron is hot and all that sort of thing, but if it didn’t work it was bound to prove costly at some point. The current from office probably was hoping that they’d have sailed off into the sunset before the real ugliness started or that they’d have a Super Bowl victory to point at while they rebuilt from this approach. Unfortunately, it looks like the ugliness has already started. Unless they fall ass backward into a franchise QB surprise, it’s difficult to imagine a situation where the franchise is able to make a quick turnaround next season.

The Rams looked like a wobbly 7-1. They weren’t convincing when they were winning. My hope at that time was that they would gel the second half of the season, and I s’pose there is still time, especially considering that nobody else has been consistently good, either (though a few teams have been more consistent than the Rams).

At this point, I’m ready to sign the petition to find replacements for Morris and DeCamillis.

I don’t know anything about coaching, but I know the Rams defense has taken a big step backwards, and that the Rams have failed to put any QBs in the dirt, even when up against OLs that are in shambles, like GB’s.

And I will help Taylor Rapp find a bus schedule out of town, too.

    ZN,

    Good quote.

Yeah, I’m afraid Miller is a rental. And not even a full season. Less than half, plus the time needed to learn the playbook, and heal from his own injuries. I’d be (happily) shocked if they re-sign him.

Which brings up another issue. A team may be able to make the “all in” thing work, if they have cap room. If they can consistently sign FA players that make up for the lack of all of those early picks. But the Rams have been in cap hell for a long, long time, and, unless I’m wrong, there isn’t much light at the end of that tunnel. Add to that, if the Rams don’t make the playoffs, and win, players may not want to go to LA. The hope of winning now was a huge draw, giving players (I’m guessing) visions of super teams.

That seems to have been a mirage, unfortunately.

I’m still good with the OBJ pickup, because it didn’t cost them a pick. He’s obviously hurt too, and he probably won’t re-sign either. But they might get a comp for him. I really don’t know if late-season pickups are eligible. Hope so, etc.

    Anyway . . .

    Zooey,

Agree with you about the coaches and Rapp. I wasn’t thrilled with the pick when it happened, seeing him as a bit slow for the position. He’s tough, and a try-hard guy, but seems limited athletically. Basically, a box-only guy. That’s where Johnson was superior, and he was basically another coach on the field.

(They haven’t managed the cap well at all, so they struggle to keep their own good players)

You just can’t do needed upgrades across the board when you throw away picks at the drop of a hat — and the Rams have done that a coupla times recently for single-season rentals.

Fluke injuries have been a major factor too, and that’s not the team’s fault. But, unlike the Packers, the Rams appear not to have the talent to go “next man up” with positive results.

I’ll still keep watching and hoping, when the Rams are on TV. But it looks like another one of those “wait until next year!” years.

Also, another some people forget, this is the third game straight game, where Stafford threw a pick six. It feels that Stafford is worse than Goff right now, not better. Hopefully, that comes around.

Well, as expected the celebrity-media has buried Stafford and the Rams.
    I dunno.

My expectations have officially changed, though. They wont win a Ring.
But I’m now just hoping for a wildcard berth and one playoff win.

I cant quite bury them, yet, because they still seem
dangerous to me in a sense. I can picture them putting-it-all-2gether
in one playoff game and knocking any one team out.

But first they have to make the playoffs.

This is not an easy schedule.

On 4th and 1, it is ok to go for it anywhere, absolutely anywhere. I say good for Mcvay on that anyway.

    Packers at Lambeau

So … first off, this is the first game I’ve finished in 4 weeks so I was happy to get 4 quarters of football. Of course I had to pick my son up from practice and missed the first 10 minutes …

I DEFINITELY do not have the same perspective as many others I’ve seen so far.

What I believe to be true is that we’re finding ourselves as an offense after losing multiple pieces going back to PS. I said at the beginning of the year that this year would be defined by injuries and if you’re playing fantasy football you know I was right. Some teams revolve around one player … ours is not that … every player is important and the chemistry matters. Losing Woods was not a trivial loss, because Van can’t do everything he did. the main thing? Woods makes adjustments to errant throws without breaking stride, so much so that we’d barely notice the pass was off. So OBJ and Van need to get chemistry with Matt and I believe that will happen. We’re basically in a mid season rebuild. And that’s not mentioning that we have no depth when we usually rotate receivers to keep them fresh.

There were like 8 plays that didn’t go our way that could have … and if two of those do we likely win the game. And likely 2-3 missed calls by refs.

The Great I usually don’t do this in losses but it matters this week.

    1) Two deep ball TDs. Multiple things to note here … OBJ still has wheels. And? Van Jefferson has proven to me that he can run away from people. He tends to pull away the further downfield he gets and create more separation when most DBNs would be closing back in on him… like he tracks the ball at full speed rather than slowing a tad when he starts to turn his head. Green Bay has not been torched like that often.

    The Good

    2) We didn’t give up. After 2 frustrating losses we could have seen some start to lose their composure. I didn’t see that.

    3) I thought Darious Williams showed up nicely.

    4) Rochell being johnny on the spot for the fumble recovery on the punt.

    5) Von Miller sighting.

    6) I thought Fuller was more visible this week as well.

    7) Gaines was disruptive and stout. Filling in for SJD nicely.

    8) OBJ getting more comfy, and more importantly, gutting it out through back spasms or whatever that was.

    9) Watching Kupp continue to shrug off tacklers like he’s a 265 pound TE.

    10) Defense holding Rodgers to field goals how many times? 3? 4?

    11) Darrell Henderson being a threat to catch TDs … how many does he have now? And that was some throw and catch.

    The Bad

    12) Okay … where to begin. Let’s start at the 4th and 1 on our own 29 … my issue is not the call. It’s that it was a run play when there was a lane over the left guard for Matt to sneak it.

    13) Stafford flat missing throws, as I will put it here every week until he cleans it up. Yeah, Woods would have made the catch that bounced off Van’s helmet, but the Higbee pass landing at his feet? Missed by 3 yards … that’s a lot.

    14) The call to hand off to Henderson at the end of the game before the FG. That play should be an out to get out of bounds or go to the end zone.

    15) Off coverage on St. Brown on that 3rd and 3 at the end of the game? Dude isn’t a deep threat. That first down was the sealant.

    16) Hats off to Davante Adams. Curious to see if he or Justin Jefferson are better … I think Jefferson may surpass him.

    17) Whitworth wasn’t ready enough for Rashaan Gary at the beginning of the game, that strip sack was on him. Guy is a backup but still a heck of an athlete.

    The Ugly

    18) 3 game losing streaks are ugly.

    19) Koski, YOU HAVE ONE JOB.

    20) Staring down Kupp leading to a pick 6.

    21) A pick 6 in 3 straight games. Is that true?

    22) Did Michel fumble at the beginning of the game? If so that’s FOUR Turnovers? I can’t believe it was even close.

    I’m sure I’m missing something.

I tried to watch the game. I gave up. I didn’t even try to watch the two games before this. I blame the coaches. They get credit for the good stuff and they get credit for the bad stuff. Hey McVaY, don’t act like nothing is wrong.
