NFL RB Index, Week 13: Three running backs who can save their teams’ seasons
.Los Angeles RamsThe Rams have re-designed their run game to rush more downhill, which fits what Kyren Williams did at Notre Dame. It’s no surprise the second-year back is finding success behind a much-improved offensive line. Williams, who has great vision, burst and contact balance, is continuing to get better as the season progresses. After missing four games with an ankle injury, Williams had his best performance Sunday with a career-high 204 scrimmage yards in the win. He was phenomenal, making big gains with his legs and as a pass-catcher on screen plays. This is what the Rams need from their RB1. A successful run game will bring more defenders into the box and open the passing game for Matthew Stafford to connect with Cooper Kupp, Puka Nacua and Tutu Atwell. The 5-6 Rams, who have inched their way closer to that final NFC wild-card spot with back-to-back wins after a Week 10 bye, must find more consistency within the offense. A healthy Williams is the key.
znModerator14 backs were taken before Wms in the 2022 draft. But the Rams didn’t just stumble into him. They deliberately traded up to take him (5th round).
Of the 14 backs taken before him, 4 have more rushing yards than he does in 2023…and Wms. missed 4 games. Those 4 backs are Kenneth Walker III (2nd round), James Cook (2nd round), Brian Robinson (3rd round), and Jerome Ford (5th round). It’s actually not that easy getting backs after round 3–the hit percentage on RBs plummets after round 3. So Wms. like Nacua and Fuller is another example of the Rams being wildly good drafting in the lower rounds.
znModeratorAdam Schefter@AdamSchefterWith Browns’ QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson now in concussion protocol, Joe Flacco has been taking snaps as Cleveland’s QB1 in practice and could start Sunday vs. the Rams.
znModeratorSarah Barshop@sarahbarshopThe Rams currently have a 36% chance to make the playoffs, per ESPN Analytics. Their chances climb to 45% with a win on Sunday against Cleveland and fall to 20% with a loss.
znModeratorI think many Rams fans are underestimating how tough the Browns are. Great defense, really physical offensive and defensive lines, and the Rams usually don’t play well against physical teams (see the last 8 or 9 games against SF). I don’t care who their starting QB is – beating them will be a tall task.
That’s my view.
Browns lead the league in time of possession. Browns defense is 1st in passing yards allowed and 1st in passing attempts against (meaning, fewest attempts against). They’re 12th in rushing yards allowed but 14th in yards per rushing attempt allowed.
znModeratorGood write-up, thanks WV. As I keep saying Williams’s superpowers have to do with what he does in the backfield getting into a run. It’s smarts, instinct, burst, vision, determination, anticipation, some lateral quickness. He’s a superstar from the point of taking the handoff or pitch through to getting to exactly the right place at the right nano-second at the OL. Add great contact balance to all that and you have Kyren Williams.…POSITIVES
— Better play speed than timed speed (4.65) with very good quickness and balance to make defenders miss in tight spaces. Fights to stay upright despite contact.
— Consistently runs with the right tempo to let blocks develop. Has the burst to plant his foot and take advantage of holes created. Knows when to lower his shoulder and get north.
— Tough runner despite smaller frame.
— Very good route-runner with flashes of an advanced route tree.
— Good hands. Comfortable snatching the ball.
— Excellent in pass protection. Eyes constantly go to the right place for his assignment and is a very willing blocker.
OVERALL
Kyren Williams has an interesting combination of traits that will give him value for whatever NFL team selects him.
Williams has good vision in the run game and shows an understanding for various run concepts. He will press the hole when needed or throttle back to allow his blocks to develop. He does not dance in the backfield, and he knows when to get north.
Williams is also a good overall athlete with the quickness and burst to take advantage of holes created. He is a complete back who will provide value on passing downs right away. Williams is a comfortable catcher of the ball who flashes the ability to run more advanced routes when split out as a receiver. He is also a very good pass protector, with good eyes to find potential blitzers and the toughness and physicality to meet defenders and sustain on his blocks. —
NEGATIVES
— On the smaller side for the position.
znModeratorCameron DaSilva@camdasilvaSaints and Falcons both have pretty favorable schedules. GB’s is on the easier side, too. Rams’ isn’t too bad. Seattle’s is really tough. My guess is the wild-card race comes down to LA, GB and MIN. Rams-Saints in Week 16 has sneaky playoff intrigue..Also, I know there are other tiebreakers that might be affected by the rest of the games I didn’t pick. Just trying to show how close this race for the 6th/7th seed could be down the stretch.

znModeratorWilliams has no business being as good as he is
I just think his effectiveness comes from what he does behind the LOS to set up and then explode through the right gaps at the right nano-second. He has more than enough vision and lateral quickness to do that. None of that would show up in measurables, I would think. Then in the open field he has great contact balance and fierce “want it” energy. He’s not that big, powerful, fast, or elusive, but he has just enough of all those things so that wanting it bad works. Look at his highlights from the ARZ game.

There’s a really good chance that the Rams are “Jared Goff fans” in Week 18.Vikings play in Detroit.
Assuming a 9-8 finish and a loss to SF, a Lions win would put the Rams in the postseason.

znModeratorNFL teams are also getting more creative with how they are getting to Duo, too. With the Rams offense leading the way.

znModeratorFrom @NFLGameDay Kickoff: #Browns QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson is in the concussion protocol, and there is a very real chance that means Joe Flacco is their starting QB. Plus, Myles Garrett (shoulder) checks out OK. pic.twitter.com/kJ9I3bXJgO

znModeratorBrowns are 1st on defense (yards) and 7th in points allowed.
On offense, they are 2oth in yards, and 15th in points.
When people say the Browns look beatable, they are thinking of the offense. But the Rams haven’t beaten a top 10 defense this season.

znModeratorHere’s who stood out on an individual level in terms of Pro Football Focus (PFF) grading:
1 – Kevin Dotson, RG: 92.2
Dotson earned an impressive 90.5 run blocking grade and paved the way for Kyren Williams’ and Royce Freeman’s monster days running the football. The recently acquired veteran has been LA’s top lineman this year and is consistently graded in the top five of the Rams’ offensive players. Dotson did not allow a single pressure in 34 pass blocking reps. It’s time to pay that man, Les Snead and Sean McVay.
2 – Kyren Williams, RB: 84.3
Williams rushed 16 times for a whopping 143 yards (8.9 average) and tacked on another six catches for 61 yards and two touchdowns through the air. He’ll finish both contests against the Cardinals this season with a total yardage output of 362. It’s also worth mentioning that Williams had a decent day in pass protection and earned a mark of 78.3 in that facet.3 – Tutu Atwell, WR: 84.2
Atwell set the tone for LA’s offense early with a 42-yard reception on third down. He made a couple other intermediate catches and finished the game with three receptions for 76 yards (average of 25.3). Aside from Williams, Atwell was the Rams’ most productive receiver on Sunday as Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua were held to a measly seven receptions for 45 yards total. The Los Angeles offense is better when Atwell is involved. The Rams replaced Atwell in the first-string lineup with Demarcus Robinson late in the game, though this was probably to help run the football and salt away the game clock. Atwell played only 24 snaps while Robinson was in for 40.
4 – Rob Havenstein, RT: 79.4
5 – Alaric Jackson, LT: 78.0
Havenstein and Jackson surrendered only two and three pressures, respectively, on a day where Matthew Stafford was pressured only seven times total. C Coleman Shelton allowed the other two pressures while LG Steve Avila and Dotson had a clean performance.
znModeratorJAKE ELLENBOGEN@JKBOGENAhkello Witherspoon gave up 2 catches on 7 targets for 23 yards. 3 pass breakups. He was outstanding on Sunday..Witherspoon is 3rd in reception percentage allowed only behind Martin Emerson and Joey Porter Jr..#Rams defense forced 19 pressures yesterday. Aaron Donald led the way with 7 and Kobie Turner with 5J.B. Long@JB_Long
From @NFLResearch, yesterday @RamsNFL RB Kyren Williams became the first player in league history with these single-game totals:
*140+ yards rushing
*6+ receptions
*60+ receiving yards
*Multiple receiving TDs
