I just don’t think that a divorce from Goff is possible. I read he stands to make $67 million over the next two years.

I would build the line a little bit.

Get healthy. There are still many pieces in place. Akers and Jefferson are bright spots.

yeah. me personally. i would concentrate on making that oline right.

i have no idea what the rams organization has in mind. if i had to choose, i’d say that’s what their plan is.

we’ll just have to see. relationships will always have their ups and downs. i’m sure goff and mcvay are both disappointed.

    we’ll just have to see.

they need to take a hard look at this offensive line. it’s not good enough.

defense played bad yesterday. but donald was hurt. for most of the season they’ve played well.

but goff and the running backs need a strong offensive line to be consistent.

    The extra picks sounds good.

    yes.

although the rams also lose a good talent evaluator so hopefully it doesn’t hurt the rams too much in terms of making those picks count. in particular, i hope the rams don’t lose the magic touch when picking defensive backs.

so the packers left tackle is out? their all-pro left tackle?

if donald can come back healthy. if the rams can run the hell out of the ball. akers and mal better be getting ready for smash mouth football. if the rams don’t turn the ball over. they got a chance.

    goff is one tough dude.

also. media going wild saying goff was benched. i don’t buy it. guy had thumb surgery. mcvay didn’t want to risk it unless he absolutely had to. and it was obvious goff wasn’t at full strength.

    gutsy performance from the quarterback.

whoa. i did not realize wolford was out. i couldn’t see the first half of the game.

i hope he’s ok. otherwise, proud of this rams team. especially after losing donald. this defense showed out.

i remember thinking 20 years ago that the legacy of that offense would be in large part established by who made the hall of fame.

faulk, warner, pace, bruce, and now hopefully holt. this would be the finishing touch on a historic offense.

apparently 4 protesters died at the storming of the capitol building. one shot directly in the chest. within a couple hours of that protest starting and ending.

although yes. they were woefully underprepared. it’s a farce.

I would go practice interviewing with the Jets, but that’s all. No way would I take that job.

Staley is young, and he will get chances again next year. I wouldn’t sign with a dysfunctional franchise.

San Diego I would maybe kick the tires on.

yeah. unless a really good opportunity comes up, why take a hc gig just to take it? he can continue working on his craft as a defensive coordinator. and if he can’t sustain success as a defensive coordinator, why would he think he can sustain success as a head coach? he won’t even turn 40 until end of 2022…

these kids… they just want it all… hahahaha!

Is he overcoaching Goff to the point of analysis paralysis?

i do sometimes wonder if mcvay is a control freak. maybe he needs to let goff just grip it and rip it.

    ack.

i’d like to see him stay a couple more years. building a great defense. not just over one year. but over several years could be just as legitimate a goal as becoming a head coach. especially if you’re going into an organization where you aren’t being set up for success. belichick with the giants.

staley has plenty of time for other head coaching opportunities. but maybe he feels he’s ready. maybe he is.

rams defense finishes number 1 overall in yards allowed. and guess what? they finish number 1 overall in points allowed! even including the points given up by special teams and offensive turnovers.

that’s awesome. number 3 in rushing yards allowed. number 1 in passing yards allowed.

passing defense. number 1 in ypa. number 2 in passer rating. number 2 in sacks.

rushing defense. number 3 in ypc.

    wow. a great defense.

lastly. i hope goff comes back. no way rams win in the playoffs with wolford behind center. he was serviceable. but no way you win in the playoffs with just serviceable. hopefully, goff is healthy. hopefully, the defense continues to play great. and hopefully, the rams can make a run in the playoffs.

Okay. I’m not sure the degrees of difference between qbs are big ones though. I think there’s guys who can often (not always) handle it (Brady, Wilson) and then everyone else–with maybe nuances of difference between and among everyone else.

But with minor differences I think we’re saying more or less the same thing, so, no board war. Of course if Ozone is right (post before mine) the scheme factors into this too. Right now the scheme looks like it’s easy for some defenses to shut down. Could be.

jourdan rodrigue wrote an article. either yesterday or today. describing how mcvay went from scrapping any kind of a vertical passing game to going almost exclusively horizontal. i wonder if defenses have figured it out and are sitting on these short routes.

    https://theathletic.com/2287161/2020/12/28/jared-goff-john-wolford-thumb/

i don’t know if i can copy and paste the article. it’s a paysite.

No qb is pressure resistant. We’ve seen the Rams demolish Wilson, who is one of the rare qbs who can play effectively behind a problem OL facing pressure…but (as just said) not always.

you’re missing the point. my point is there’s a spectrum.

    Wilson is better than Goff.

yeah. it’s not a question of toughness or will to win here. wilson is just a better qb than goff. he’s a hall of famer. he’s one of the best in the last 10 years or so. it’s not a question of if goff is as tough as wilson. wilson’s an elite qb.

Yep. They had good starting position frequently.

And they didn’t turn over the ball. The Rams, crucially, did turn it over on a drive that would have ended in points.

And they stuffed the Rams twice from inside the one.

    Ball game.

    several key plays.

    1. darious williams misses an interception i think in the first quarter. right in the bread basket. and i’m pretty sure he takes it to the house if he doesn’t take off running before securing the ball.

    2. goff throws an interception in the second quarter that most likely takes 3 points away from the rams.

ok. right there that puts the rams up 16-6 going into the second half.

    3. rams get stuffed two times and fail to score a td from the 1 yard line. i think that was the third quarter?

    4. seahawks. wilson leads seattle on a clutch td drive to ice the game.

    that’s 24 points right there.

One of the common mistakes I see when people talk about pressure is this idea that if there is no visible pressure on a particular play, then pressure wasn’t the issue. That is not how it works though. Constant pressure erodes timing, play design, general effectiveness, and confidence. It has an effect on playcalling. It means you’re in more disadvantageous situations more often (like 3rd and long). It usually also means you’re playing from behind, which just increases the pressure issue. In the Rams case it means this–teams like Seattle know they can sit on all those short routes without fear of punishment because the qb will never have time to find a receiver who gets deeper.

With Goff, what pressure does is get him to press–he tries to make plays when they’re not there, and usually his mechanics are off too. No qb gets the time to go “am I pressured this play or not, let’s see….” They go yikes I am running, the play’s not there, but I need to do something (which is pressing). That was the INT.

i understand that. it was still a terrible throw. one of his worst.

and it’s not just a does a qb get affected by pressure or not. it’s not a binary thing. you have some qbs who are pressure resistant. you have some qbs who completely fall apart under pressure. and then you have qbs who fall somewhere between those two points. i think goff is somewhere in between. where that is is debatable.

Imo the coaching since the Pats game has completely collapsed. These guys just aren’t ready to play maybe the pandemic taking its toll or injuries but they just don’t look sharp. How many times did Goff have to get them lined up? Drops , blown coverages missed tackles missed blocks idiotic play calls over and over. They used to be known as a well coached team now they look like a team that doesn’t practice.

every team has to deal with the same problems though. i don’t know. it’s all been very depressing.

having said that they have a real good chance to go 11-5…

oh wait. goff broke the thumb on his throwing hand…

The Seahawks pressured Jared Goff on 24 dropbacks Sunday, the most in Goff’s career and the Seahawks 3rd most under Pete Carroll (and most since 2015), per @ESPNStatsInfo

    well. whit.

i mean we had to expect a drop off. not just for his ability to play left tackle and the fact that he’s the best olineman the rams have. but also being the most experienced. being the leader. a guy goff trusts.

so yeah. that’s definitely part of the problem.

Looking just at INTs, the 9 in 13 games = an INT percentage of 2.2%. Tomorrow when all of today’s stats are in it will be possible to say where that would rank in the league. It won’t be high but it won’t be one of the lowest either.

it would still rank 21st. it’s too many turnovers.

this is pretty clear i think. even after taking out those two games.

with those 2 games, he ranks 23rd.

    ypa ranks 21st

    passer rating ranks 26th

this is all including today’s game.

is he as bad as those rankings suggest? i don’t think so. i think he’s better than that. it’s frustrating for sure. but there’s better days to come for goff.

That was Jared Goff’s 23rd game with a turnover since the start of last season, the most in the NFL, per @ESPNStatsInfo

I dunno Invader. It seemed like around 1/3rd of the game we gave them the ball between the 40 and 50 yet still held them to 20 points. I think the defense played great.

if they get at least one turnover. let’s say that dwill int drop that probably goes in for a td. if they don’t give up that huge td at the end when the game was still in the balance. then i’d say great.

but they played good. good enough. but the offense played like crap.

they played good. i wouldn’t say great. but they played good.

offense was terrible. absolutely terrible. left at least 10 points on the board. at the very least.
