wvParticipantcall me crazy, but i think the rams gotta chance next week. but they gotta slow ap down.
When’s the last time a
Ram team with a Winning Record
had a big game against
another team with a Winning Record?I think RFL’s point about the passing game
comes into play against the Vikes.
Against a ‘good team’ the Rams just
cant be one dimensional.
They’ll need some consistent play
from Foles and the Oline, one would think.
But the Vikes aint exactly the Patriots.
This one is winnable.w

And like that, Gurley has it. Per ESPN Stats & Info, Todd Gurley now has the most rushing yards by a runner in 1st 4 starts since merger. You know i was not expecting this. I thought he’d
be good, but not this year. I figured
he wouldnt really be a difference maker

wvParticipantThis is a MUST win game if the Rams have any hope for the playoffs.
The Panthers or Falcons will grab one of the wild card spots–the other wins their division.
That leaves one wild card or the division for the Rams to win.
If the Rams stumble here–in a game they SHOULD win–they’re done. If they DO win they set up a critical game against the Vikes. These are the games where seasons are made or lost.
So we’ll see.

wvParticipantRams’ T.J. McDonald: Returns to full practice
http://www.cbssports.com/fantasy/football/news/rams-tj-mcdonald-returns-to-full-practice/
Despite returning to a full practice Friday, McDonald (shoulder) is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the 49ers, Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
The Rams have a bunch of players listed as questionable that don’t actually seem to be in much danger of missing the game. McDonald, who is on pace for 96 tackles, should be available against the flailing San Francisco offense.

wvParticipantWell, this season the Rams have lost to two teams they should have beaten. They lost to Washington on the road and Pittsburgh at home. Yes, the Pittsburgh game is a game they should have won. They had them at home and knocked Rothlisberger out of the game. They beat one team they should have (Browns). So this year so far they are 1-2 in games they should have won. So, what Laurinaitis says is true only if beating the Browns is the start of a trend. But that’s something nobody can know as of yet.
—————————
I agree.
I will be very very disappointed if they lose
at home, to a crumbling mess like the 49ers
which is 31st in defense and 32nd in offense.w

wvParticipantMerlin
Our passing game is still sputtering through 6 games. The main problem is the line. They have been allowing far too much penetration on both run and pass plays and it is affecting everything else.
Run blocking has improved the most, but it has also benefitted from an elite talent running through the holes. Gurley gives them a little more room for error, and his ability to bust big runs has allowed for a very good YPC average, masking the fact that they still have a ways to go as a line (IMO they need to limit the penetration much more consistently).
And this is something that should scare other teams on our schedule too, since the OL has yet to really put together a dominant, full-60 effort. What will Gurley’s game stats look like when that happens?
Pass blocking is hit and miss. The line had some great snaps against both Seattle and AZ, only to get overrun in pass pro when Washington and Cleveland stacked the LOS and brought the heat. That more than anything else is their issue.
From there, I do think scheme has been part of it. When they go with the shotgun on obvious passing downs defenses do not buy the play action which means Foles is throwing into the teeth of a defense that is dropping LBs deep and cluttering up the passing lanes. If the line was good enough that wouldn’t matter as much, but they’re not there yet and that delay on the reads is hurting Foles’ ability to get that ball out.
Cigs needs to put Foles under center and run play action on those third and long plays because teams are going to respect the play action no matter how bad the down/distance is given how good Gurley is. Lastly, more slants and vertical hot reads are needed. Cigs has gotten far too comfortable with the horizontal hots and checkdowns.
======================
I think i agree with all
of that.w
vOctober 30, 2015 at 6:02 am in reply to: Laurinaitis says maturing Rams are winning games they’re supposed to win #33215
wvParticipantFor me, 7 and 9 teams on the road are included
in the “teams u should beat category.”
As well as eight and eight teams. But for me, I’m not looking at who they are ‘favored’
over — I’m looking at “who should you beat
IF you are going to be considered a good/solid team”So far, the past gazillion years,
and to state the obvious,
they have ‘not’ been
a good solid team. And we agree on the ‘reasons’ they
havent been a good team. This year they have more high-level-talent
and experience than in years past.
At least they do everywhere but the Oline.w
v
wvParticipantSeriously? You would draft DEFENSE with the first and second picks?
w
vI draft players. Me and Snead draft players, not positions. I might use the first 3 picks on defense, depending on how the draft plays out. It is sort of like, did we need Donald when we drafted him? When I draft, talent trumps, especially in the first 2 rounds. Talent and my opinion.
Ok. But i kinda thot DT was pretty close
to a ‘need’ last year. But i get what yer saying.I’m hoping need and talent line up in the
next draft. The offseason is gonna be ‘very’ inter esting,
what with Chris Long, and Janoris and Barron
and Saffold, etc up for grabs. What’s yer opinion on keeping or jettisoning
Chris Long?My own view is, if Snisher thinks they are
seriously in the running for a Ring next year,
then keep him. …i bet Belichex would dump him.w
vw
v
wvParticipantThe way this years draft lays out. I am going best CB, best DE, TE, then WR, in that order. I might take two if good ones are available. I won’t pass on Cook, if he is there. It is early, but right now that looks like it maximizes the talent and it is independent of whoever I can sign as FAs. ps I am cutting Cook.
Seriously? You would draft DEFENSE with the first and second picks?
w
v
wvParticipantKenny Britt leads the Rams in Receiving yards.
He’s ranked number 86 in the NFL. 224 yards.
Tavon is ranked 106 — 187 yards.
Cook is 105 — 188 yards.Stedman is at 119 — 169 yards
Not exactly the GSOT
My view? All of the guys listed except Tavon did better last year.
Tavon improved this year, so, that’s different.
So if they all did better last year, who are they? Is it right to assume this right now IS what they am?
Quick hasn’t re-climbed his ladder back to who he was in 2014. Maybe he won’t but I say odds favor him doing it.
Britt and Cook can be better than what they’ve been this year so far. Particularly Cook, who is just in this massive confidence crisis. A revived Cook is not going to set the world on fire, though still, it IS better.
Stedman too. Kendricks too.
It’s still not the GSOT, but if they’ve been better before, why can’t they get back to it?
An out of sync offense will have symptoms. One is that EVERYBODY plays with less confidence and precision. And, sync-ness CAN be gotten back in-to. They can smooth this out with some experience together.
Just IMO. Or, more explicitly, my own opinion based on what the football gods told me was absolute truths. So you know it’s an informed opinion.
..
=======================
Yeah, I agree with that, basically, but I’m not a hundred-percent sure.
I ‘think’ they are a ‘good enough’ group. Or will be.But right now, this passing offense: QB, OLine, Receivers — is abominable.
Heinous, even.
Vile and reprehensible.Its icky.
I dont like it. I dont wanna watch it.
I think they should get in an
electric-football-wedge and just
give it to Gurley. Put Tavon
behing Gurley and they can
include laterals in the offense.Strange thing is, i was praising this passing attack
after the Seattle game. I thought they attacked
the middle with medium passes in that game.
The OLine help up just enough to do some of that.
Now, though, I think Cignetti has just given
up on medium passes cause of the Oline fiasco.
I mean Foles is NOT gonna last the season
if he keeps getting pounded. They know that.w

http://blog.sfgate.com/49ers/49ers appear united, and could we a change after the bye week?
By Kevin Lynch on October 28, 2015 at 2:59 PMColin Kaepernick breezed through the locker room and past a small group of reporters.
“Hey,” Kaepernick called out, “Who do you guys have lunch with?”
Kaepernick was poking harmless fun at the news conference he just concluded when he was asked who he lunches with.
The question was prompted by a national report saying that Kaepernick was on an island in the 49ers’ locker room.
“Kap isn’t on a damn island,” wide receiver Torrey Smith told a gaggle of reporters unprompted.
If the 49ers are fracturing in the wake of a 2-5 start, they didn’t show it on Wednesday, in fact they put up a convincing show of unity, with Smith leading the charge.
“If anyone is going to be mad, it’s going to be the receivers,” Smith said about the team’s start and Kaepernick’s struggles. “And we’re fine.”
For the record, Kaepernick lunches with fellow quarterbacks and offensive linemen Alex Boone and Joe Staley.
When asked to address the report on being on an island, Kaepernick said, “No, I have a great relationship with my teammates. To me, that’s a situation where I don’t know what the agenda is saying that or what the credibility of that source is.”
The report from Jay Glazer brought up memories from last year of unnamed sources that undercut then coach Jim Harbaugh.Under cutting Kaepernick now could be a motivation since the 49ers might want to get a look at backup quarterback Blaine Gabbert before determining whether to pay Kaepernick $16 million in bonuses and salary next year. Also, if Kaepernick sustains a horrible injury, the 49ers would owe him $61 million.
But the decision on whether Kaepernick sits or plays is up to one man – the loyal Jim Tomsula. The new coach doesn’t have final say over the roster, the draft, or player acquisition. He does have final say on who will start on game days, and right now his starter at quarterback is Kaepernick.
As we have seen, Tomsula doesn’t like to make changes. He once said that he doesn’t want his players to feel like they are “disposable.”
Tomsula has also said twice that changes could be made, but then little happens. The only switch has been the introduction of Andrew Tiller at right guard on a rotating basis. And from what Tomsula said Wednesday, it doesn’t appear if a shake up is expected this week.
However, all this could change in a few weeks. The 49ers play in St. Louis on Sunday, and they host Atlanta before arriving at their bye week. At that time, center Daniel Kilgore is expected to return, which could provide a perfect opportunity to start a new quarterback.
But in the mean time, there appears to be support for the embattled Kaepernick. But just how long with that support last?

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Kaepernick scrambles away from Green Bay Packers Neal in their NFL NFC Divisional playoff football game in San Francisco ReutersThe Packers left San Francisco as 45-31 losers to the 49ers and members of the Colin Kaepernick admiration society.
Watching Kaepernick light up the defense for 263 passing yards and 181 rushing yards, the most ever by an NFL quarterback, left the architect of the Packers team sounding more impressed by Kaepernick than he was upset at his team’s efforts. Packers General Manager Ted Thompson knew the hype on Kaepernick, but said that the real thing went beyond the advance billing.
“That was unbelievable,” Thompson said, via Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports. “He did everything. I mean, I had read the press clippings and seen some of the highlights. But to watch what he did … oh my, that was special.”….

Will Jim Tomsula eventually have to bench Colin Kaepernick?

Colin Kaepernick on an island in the locker room? (AP Photo/Gene J. Puskar)
Rumors are swirling around the embattled 49ers, which is almost expected after five corrosive losses. Whispers of momentous changes on this team have been in the air and on Sunday, Fox’s Jay Glazer reported that quarterback Colin Kaepernick is on an “island in the locker room.”
Coach Jim Tomsula said changes were coming on Friday, after the 49ers’ dreadful offensive performance in a 20-3 drubbing to rival Seattle. But he wouldn’t be specific. However, he did say there would be no change at quarterback. In fact, last week, Tomsula was obstinate about who makes the decision at quarterback – he does.
But sticking with Kaepernick might not be what the organization wants. They have a $16 million bill coming due on him in the off-season, and if Kaepernick’s frustrating inconsistency persists, the higher-ups might want to see what kind of bridge quarterback Blaine Gabbert can be.
Certainly, wide receivers Anquan Boldin and Torrey Smith exhibited consternation this season after a few of Kaepernick’s wayward passes. Nevertheless, to Kaepernick’s credit, he has not show any anger at his offensive line for their leaky protection.
Of course, Kaepernick’s lack of pocket presence and inability to spot open receivers has contributed to his 25 sacks, something that is probably not lost on management.
All of this puts pressure on Tomsula if indeed, those above him want him to make a change that he doesn’t want to make. Tomsula continues to be admired and well-liked by players. It seems that most believe that Tomsula is in the same predicament they’re in, namely working for a diminished team resulting from free-agent losses, sudden retirements and a lack of adequate replacements.
But now, Tomsula’s loyalty and belief in his unshakable will to make things right might be working against him. Tomsula’s rise to success was built on persistence and overcoming insurmountable odds. How else could a guy that once slept in his car win the head job after just eight seasons as a defensive line coach?
The reality is the 49ers cannot be fixed this year. Now they have lost strong safety Antoine Bethea, and running back Carlos Hyde has a stress fracture in his foot. Those losses are added to an already talent-challenged team.
Tomsula announced he will fix his team and he is probably working himself into the ground to find solutions. But sleeping in his office, and hoping the answer will come in his 19th straight hour of toil is just magical thinking.
The one decision Tomsula seems unwilling to make – the one at quarterback – is something that seems antithetical to Tomsula’s sense of loyalty and his belief he can work his way to winning.
But it’s a decision that eventually, he may have to make.

wvParticipantI watched the Brown game on replay, and i dont have
anything new to add to what everyone’s already said.Janoris looks like a new player this year. He not
only is covering consistently, he’s become an
excellent tackler which i never expected. The redzone defense is something that reminds
me of the old Patriots defense from the early
superbowl years. The Rams are still giving up big plays
but not TD’s and they tighten up in the redzone.
Thats a significant and welcome change. The passing game is so atrocious I cant
bear to even think of a third and long.Barron, and Hayes and Simms and Westbrooks
and TJ and McLeod were all fun to watch in that
game. And some guy named Gurley was pretty good.Playing with the lead is so much different.
If Foles had had to play catch up I think
we’d have seen four more INTs. At this point,
with the OLine being a mess, Foles cannot
be asked to stay in the pocket and sling
the ball around.w

wvParticipantWell the issue to ‘me’ is — can they get to that “ten win” level.
Wild-card playoff level — and to be at ‘that’ level, you can
still have weaknesses. So, i think they can indeed
have a mediocre passing game and still be a wild-card-level team.I never had much hope for an ‘elite level’ team this year.
I also do think the passing game will improve as the season
goes along (barring injuries). Surely its reasonable to
expect incremental improvement from a new QB and a new OLine
as the season goes along and they get more experience. They get the 49ers at home. Good teams win
these games. To state the obvious.PS — what could be finer than to beat
the shit out of the 49ers and the Vikings
in back to back weeks. Make it so.w
