wvParticipantI thought the Rams had 3 Seventh Round picks? I thot they got two comp picks in the 7th rd. I guess not?
w
v
wvParticipantBut what if that good-future-QB-pick costs the Rams a Super Bowl this season? What if Davante or Puka go down. (Puka plays like a tasmanian devil, and Davante is old)
Arguably, they just needed the corners. They managed to have the #1 offense in the league last year with the receivers they have–including PN and DA missing time.
In the final 2 games against Seattle, they faced a super bowl defense that was 6th in yards and 1st in points allowed. And in those 2 games averaged–on just offense–534 yards, 32 points, and 0 turnovers.
Their problem was defense, and the weak spot was CB.
Yeah, they fixed their glaring weakness. True. And so they looked at the 13 pick with that in mind and they concluded they didn’t need to add a WR.
I dont agree with that approach. That number one offense could be better with M.Lemon. Especially if there are injuries.

PFFHis measurables are above the 50th percentile for NFL receivers, and he appears to have long arms, though he is still on the smaller side for an outside receiver. That does not show up in contested situations, however, as he has posted a contested catch rate above 80.0% over the past two seasons, ranking in the 100th percentile.
He lacks true difference-making long speed, but he is quick and sudden in his releases and at the top of routes, allowing him to consistently create separation on intermediate routes. He is not a major factor after the catch, with low percentile production in that area.
Daniels has the experience and release package to line up at all three receiver spots. As a blocker, his slender build can show up against stronger defenders, but he competes with a feisty mentality…

wvParticipantBut I will say that the Rams arguably DID go for it when the acquired McDuffie with their first round pick, and snagged the other dude whatshisface in free agency.
So they’re sitting there with the 13th pick that they paid very little to acquire. And, as we know, it usually costs a lot to get a good QB. Brady and Purdy are exceptions, but that’s 2 QBs in the past 25 years. You either have to give up a lot of capital, or you have to go through a dark patch as a team.
If Simpson actually develops into Bulger, we will come around to loving this pick.
The algebra is tricky. Lots of unknowns.
Their approach was rational, and forward-thinking, and kinda bold. And yes, Ty Simpson could turn out to be a good QB, down the road.
But what if that good-future-QB-pick costs the Rams a Super Bowl this season? What if Davante or Puka go down. (Puka plays like a tasmanian devil, and Davante is old)
I agree with the Seahawk fans 🙂
I would have prioritized picks that are plug-and-play and make an impact THIS season. Lemon seemed like one of those guys.
w
v
wvParticipantand the other thing is they still have some cap space too. something like 10 million after signing the rookies. so maybe some surprise signing in the future?
even a trade at some point?
I think they’ll sign a WR at some point. The way Seattle did last year. Somebody who just wants to win a ring.
w
v
wvParticipanti just watched it. the mechanics issues are worrisome. i guess that can be corrected with coaching? but he also needs live reps too. which he ideally won’t get outside of preseason.
late diagnosing plays? again maybe a reps issue?
the physical problems i don’t have so much of an issue with. he’s not going to outrun defenders.
he looks like a second rounder. i know snead doesn’t put much stock into draft capital. just a means to get a player. i don’t know. i know he’s got fancy mathematicians mathing the outcomes. maybe it makes sense from that point of view? but from where i’m sitting i want another superbowl. any number of injuries could happen. a nacua suspension is not out of the question. an oline injury (although they addressed that later in the draft). adams. or one of the dbs could go down.
stafford is not replaceable. impossible in the near future. very unlikely in the distant future. this is why you got him in the first place. he’s supposed to be the elite qb to get you over the hump like mina kimes said in that video. i don’t think you can math that problem if he goes down. the other ones you can math.
the more i think about it actually the less convinced i become. unless mcvay and the coaching staff find the next steve young in this kid.
I agree with all that.
Questions about the strategy itself. And questions about Ty Simpson as a player.
But again, i get why they went with this approach.
At any rate, we got High-Hopes for this season. When’s the last time there was a consensus around the country that the Rams were favorites to win it all?
Maybe…the year Martz took over? Its been a while.
w
v
wvParticipanti hate the pick. i’m not sure there’s anything that can convince me otherwise.
i understand the logic. and if it was a better qb or at least a better profile i’d feel more comfortable with the pick. but all due respect to simpson and daniels, he seems more like the next chase daniels than the next brock purdy (who had 46 starts in college).
the only way he sees the field is if stafford goes down in which case it doesn’t matter. the rams are screwed they’re not going to win with a rookie qb who only has 15 starts in college under his belt. it’s not gonna happen. it’s just a bad move. again. i understand the logic but for a better qb.
they shoulda just traded down if possible.
(Check out the vid “why i almost fell in love with simpson”. At about the 10 minute mark he starts the negative stuff on Ty. )
I agree with all you said, there.
Mainly I think it was the wrong approach because I think the Rams window is — one year. I think next season is their entire window. After that, Stafford will probly leave (or start to go down hill). And without prime stafford this team is not gonna beat the elite teams. Also, they are gonna start losing some good players after this season.
I think they will still be playoff contenders, maybe challenge for the division but i dont think they will be one those elite top-four type teams.
So, if you believe the window is just one year — ya go for it, in that one year.
If you dont think the window is one year, then the algebra changes.
w
v
wvParticipant
wvParticipantI think the main thing with this pick, and the guard they took in rnd 3, is plugging up in advance the holes that will be caused by free agency next year. Next year both veteran TEs (Higbee and Parkinson) and 4 of the starting OL will be up for extensions. They can’t sign all 6 of those guys. They will need fresh bodies.
The idea that this draft was all about the 2026 window was obviously wrong.
Stafford is working on a multiple year extension (at least 2 years) and that means the window is open longer.
But come next year, they won’t be able to pay all their draft picks and other acquisitions from 2023-2024. So this draft is about developing replacements.
Well, I dont get why you think the third rounder is a guard? He started all his college games except one at Tackle.
As far as it being wrong that this draft was about the 26 window — I think it SHOULD have been about 2026. I think McSnead was wrong to make it about the future.
I get why they did it, etc. And their approach was totally reasonable and understandable blah blah. I just dont agree with it. Winning a Super Bowl is really really hard, and i think when you have a clear shot at it in Stafford’s possible-last-year or last-healthy-year, i think you take that shot. I think M.Lemon was the pick. I like the tight-end-weapon. And I like the OLineman.
In my time as a ram fan, Simpson is the most intriguing pick i can ever remember the Rams making.
It will be very interesting to see how this season and the Ty Simpson years turn out.
w

wvParticipantcam newton, kyler murray, anthony richardson, mitchell trubisky, and dwayne haskins.
if you expand it to 20 games, it also includes four others. trey lance, mark sanchez, mac jones, and ryan tannehill.
it makes no mention of kurt warner and i didn’t really cross check to verify the accuracy of this answer.
edit. this only includes qbs drafted in the first round which is why warner isn’t on this list.
Ok, well….has any QB ever become a topflight player in the NFL who only had 15 starts in college AND was 6’1 inches tall 🙂
The height bothers me more than the number of starts, actually.
w
v
wvParticipantHe runs with more authority than Ferguson.
w
v
wvParticipant5 WRs off the board now, taken in the third round, as of pick 17
w
v
wvParticipantSteelers take the Penn State QB: Allar. 6’5, 228 lbs.
w
v
wvParticipantCardinals take the Miami QB, Beck, at the top of the third. He’s a good ‘processor,’ apparently. Also 6’5″ and 233 Lbs.
Always interesting to see how a QB class turns out.
The experts all seemed to agree this was not a great QB class. Would be fun to see this class surprise them.
w
v
wvParticipantAn F’ing Tight End. I had to look that up.
A.I.
An “F” tight end is a versatile, athletic “move” tight end used primarily for receiving and creating mismatches, often lining up in the slot, as an H-back, or in motion rather than in-line. Often called a “joker” or “chess piece,” they are crucial in modern NFL offenses for their flexibility to run routes like a receiver or block inw
v
wvParticipantThis is a new version of F them picks, i think.
So what will they take in round 3 — whats the next position where they dont have a need?
w
v
wvParticipantIs there a name for an offense that uses 0 WRs and 4 Tight Ends?
w
v
wvParticipantIt’s rare. Quantity of starts is supposed to be a major factor in future NFL production for QBs. Exceptions, as others have noted. Ironically, the Rams, under McSnead, tend to go for older, more experienced players. Simpson is older, but not more experienced.
Regardless, I question the pick on a lot of grounds. Lack of game experience is just one of them.
Ty Simpson aside, can you even picture McVay coaching up a raw green rookie?
I just cant picture it. After being with Mr Hall of Fame veteran all these years, I fear McVay might go into Goff-hating-mode. Or whatever we wanna call it.
w
v
wvParticipantCam Newton. 14 college starts.
If the Rams took a Cam-Newton-type-QB, I’d probably be cheering. I must have a ‘physical’ trait bias.
Ty is not the great ‘athlete’ with big arm and speed to burn. Supposedly, he has the great mental part of it. The invisible trait. Brady, Brees, etc.
We’ll see. I hope he’s better than Stetson.
w
v
wvParticipantSo are we all agreed on the need for a Long Snapper with pick 61 ? Consensus?
w
v
wvParticipantKurt Warner.
True. Course he had quite a journey before he became a great one. Packers, Barnstormers, Admirals..
I just wonder about all this “he’s a good processor” stuff. They know this after only 15 starts at Alabama?
I enjoyed his commentary on the Chase Daniel vid. He is not going to need any Kyler Murray clauses in his contract.
w
v
wvParticipantNot happy with the Simpson pick. But they didn’t ask me, of course. Too soon for him. Most folks were talking late 1st round into 2nd. And it’s surely not an “all in, play for today” kinda pick. Hope they at least tried to trade down and were just stymied, etc.
Anyway, they’re gonna need to hit on the next two rounds. Hoping it’s wideout and upgrade at linebacker. Role the dice on some small college athletes with their late picks.
15 starts. Has any QB with that type of college history ever turned out to be a top NFL QB? I dunno. I cant think of one offhand.
w
v
wvParticipantI am with Invader on McVay wanting him, and not WV on the more dire possible futures.
..Dire possible futures? I havent even started on THAT yet. One of them involves McVay, Epstein and dog-eating robots.
w
v
wvParticipantIn the process of watching the Chase Daniel vid with Ty Simpson.
“…check the ball down, just get the ball out…cannot take a safety…taking a safety is almost, ya know, just plain Disrespectful to the Football Gods.”
w
v
wvParticipant49ers get a WR at the top of the second round, i see. 6’2. 207 Lbs. Dude runs a 4.36.
w
v
wvParticipantNick Wright not a fan of the pick. I started the vid past his argument though. I started where he made a small but interesting point about the unique made-up-category the Rams are in:
wvParticipantwell. that would suck.
so. i prefer not to believe that.
Indeed. It would be ironic if…when McVay retires every other team in the NFL has a McVay disciple at the helm, and yet the Rams ended up without one 🙂
I cant picture McVay coaching a green, rookie QB, btw. I cant picture it. He’s had success with topflight vet-QBs, so far.
w
v
wvParticipant“..Snead and his scouts value what they call a “central nervous system” in a quarterback..”
Good to know.
I’ve always preferred QBs with a brain and spinal chord as well.
