After being in 11 personnel on 100% of their plays the last four weeks, they moved to 48% 12 personnel against the Broncos with an EPA per play of 0.21. No Skowronek a reason for this. Need depth at TE to run it more next year, but something the offense needs more of.
    .
All three of Cam Akers’ touchdowns and his two biggest runs against the Broncos all came in 12 personnel.

I can’t help but wonder if there is a “Thomas Brown” affect on Cam because this was the Cam we all were looking forward to at the start of the season.
Jourdan Rodrigue: I think clarity of plan + role was helpful and I think Thomas Brown deserves a lot of credit for a lot of things most people won’t ever see publicly, including the resurgence of this run game. That’s not to take away from anybody else. RBs coach on most staffs, especially this one, is one of the more uniquely isolating roles on a football team and any first-year coach in this situation would have a hell of an uphill climb even without the injury issues they dealt with and lack of veteran presence in the room.

With yesterday’s performance the #Rams passed the #Patriots for the most 50+ point games all-time with 16. No one in NFL history has more games scoring 50+ than the Rams.

Sources: Broncos players were just informed that senior assistant coach Jerry Rosburg, whom Nathaniel Hackett hired during the season to aid him in clock management strategy, is now taking over as the Broncos’ interim head coach, effective immediately.

Through week 13 they had 12 different combos into a four and five-deep everywhere except RT and now they have the same one and also at same time can’t really throw downfield anyway

The thing about yesterday is that while the #Rams were without 8 of their starters, 4-10 and completely out of playoff contention…They still played what you could call the most complete complementary football game of the Sean McVay era. That was incredible.
    .
The #Rams pass rush generated a whopping 29 pressures which was their best of the year. Michael Hoecht led the way with 7 of them
    .
I think Baker is going to have a market too big to even consider coming back to the Rams as a backup
    .
    HoldenCantor@HoldenCantor
What a game for the Rams offensive line yesterday which gave up just (ONE!) hurry in 29 pass blocking snaps per @PFF

Rams DT Larrell Murchison, who left Sunday’s game vs. Broncos with a neck injury, just has “a little bit of a stinger”/neck soreness, per HC Sean McVay. McVay said he doesn’t expect it to impact Murchison’s status for Week 17.

Not sure it’s a coincidence that Akers had turned it around ever since Thomas Brown took a larger role again coaching RBs.

    Gary Klein@LATimesklein
McVay on Akers: “That’s certainly I think is something that we’ve worked through. There’s totally a different trajectory in terms of what he’s done and the way that he’s handled himself and the way that he’s playing the way like we know he’s capable of…”

Just stop it with that shit. I don’t like it.

I’ll try but I have a different plan. I have a hearing aid, a stent, use reading glasses, and walk with a cane. So. I am just slowly transitioning into being a cyborg.

Enough of this “respect nature” crap. It’s time to replace nature.

ZN, Good points too. Though I thought McCutcheon played yesterday . . . ? What’s your take on the Rams at least trying to keep Mayfield? I know the odds are against it, both from a salary cap and personal goals POV. Mayfield is said to really want to start, and he knows that won’t be in LA, at least as long as Stafford is there. So he’s gonna want to go where he can start. But he looks really solid with this offense, even with it being decimated, and the Rams have invested too little in the backup spot. Wolford and Perkins do not look like starting-caliber QBs at this moment in time. They need someone as good as BMayfield . . .

I could be wrong about McCutcheon.

If they lost Mayfield they would get a high comp pick for him, and to me that makes more sense than overpaying to have 2 #1 qbs.

Now if Stafford retires, then we have a different story. That could mean trouble in terms of dead money though.

Or presumably, in theory anyway, they could jettison Stafford for Mayfield, but then that means paying dead guaranteed money for Stafford to not be on the roster while also giving Mayfield a starting qb’s contract–while he’s a FA, which means having to compete with other bidders for that contract.

I thought production of both Higbee and Hopkins was interesting. When was the last time the Rams have had two TE’s have such strong games ? Did this happen because of game planning, (i.e. something that the Rams recognized in Denver’s defense)? Is it a preference of Mayfield? Or is it simply because Kupp and Robinson are out? Anyway, I had high hopes for Hopkins after the Super Bowl, and in this mess of a year he just hasn’t had the opportunity to come through.

IMO? They were basically down to one healthy experienced WR, Jefferson. They’ve lost Kupp, Roninson, Skowronek, and McCutcheon (although he’s a rookie). Their receivers now include Powell and Atwell, neither one of which are true receivers, and Trammel.

Also notice Mayfield never went downfield. He has a great, quick release so basically they built a classic WCO methodical short passing game around him, which also helped the OL. Having 2 TEs during the game helped the run blocking too.

I cannot remember a single game from the Rams long history where the TEs caught more than the WRs. It was also clear to me that Higbee and Hopkins knew how much of the game was being put on them, and knew that they had to step up. That was Higbee’s best game since I don’t know when.

Rams defense gives up their first TD of the day with 8:30 left to go in the fourth quarter.

Outstanding performance from Raheem Morris’ group today.

    Stu Jackson@StuJRams
Rams QB Baker Mayfield said P Riley Dixon told him postgame that it was his first no-punt game of his career.

    Jourdan Rodrigue@JourdanRodrigue
Bobby Wagner has now recorded at least one sack and one interception in games against his former team (Seattle) or former quarterback (Wilson).

    Albert Breer@AlbertBreer
Hard to miss how much better Baker Mayfield (with 3 weeks in that offense, and the Rams’ top two WRs out) looks than Russell Wilson (in an offense that was built over an entire offseason by/for him).

    Jourdan Rodrigue@JourdanRodrigue
    Seven scores on seven drives.

This is an offense that entered the game with the fourth-worst three-and-out rate in the NFL. Balanced and efficient job today, minus a ton of starters and against a prev. good defense.

Without Skowronek available, Rams going a little more to Hopkins in some of the mixed looks in run-blocking.

Similar defensive ethos between both teams today, obviously each with its

own key personnel and evolutions. Talked a lot with McVay, OC Coen and Mayfield this week about the importance of taking the underneath stuff against that ethos. Mayfield (he will be first to admit) has

struggled with that in 2022 overall. He is throwing passes short of the sticks at a 10% higher frequency this season, but has a career-low 11.6% off-target rate on those throws, 33/36 QBs (@TruMediaSports h/t @aaronjreiss). Making those throws is needed with where the Rams are

limited in personnel at WR and OL, and in this offense helps with timing. McVay mentioned being cognizant of where underneath levels are being schemed on 3-level throws. Coen said coaches need to continue to create clarity there because they need that type of rhythm and down

management (especially as they’re limited elsewhere). Mayfield says he needs to “accept what the defense gives him.” Structures like this can be a 10,000-paper-cuts deal and patience and consistency (including in the calls) are elements not frequented by Rams offense this year.

That’s also a fancy way of saying, “stick with the run a little, eh?” – Broncos defense is very good but No. 16 in YPC and EPA/rush vs. run game

No stent for me yet. Glad it worked out, zn.

Thank you. I appreciate the kind words. But to be honest, the way the medical situation works, if a stent is not going to work, they know it in advance, and what they do then is step up to bypass surgery. So unless the surgeon is mind-numbingly incompetent, stents just work–if they aren’t going to work they know that beforehand and skip the stent and instead schedule a bypass.
