Rams TE Tyler Higbee says he chuckled when he saw all the rookies out on the field stretching this week, because there were so many of them he thought, “this looks like a whole team right here!” He adds they’re a group that’s not shy about asking a ton of questions right away.

I have a completely unproveable suspicion about Rams draft picks. I think it’s collaborative stacking the board before the draft but I also think McV gets favorites and tends to prefer certain guys with the first pick which is of course usually a 2nd rounder. After the 2nd round McV defers more to the personnel guys. Avila doesn’t fit this but look at the list of Rams 2nd rounders since 2017. They’re mostly skill guys who didn’t meet 2nd round expectations. Arguably, Avila aside, Akers might be the only one that is worthy of round 2 status. This might explain why the Rams 3rd round picks are usually better than their second round picks.

McVay loves what he’s seen from Stafford thus far, saying he looks like “a human JUGS machine out there.”

“He’s been awesome,” McVay said on NFL Network. “He’s got a great look in his eye. And even though he says he’s getting older, he still does look like a human JUGS machine out there. It’s like he was made to throw a football. When he’s feeling good, I feel a lot better as well. He just elevates people around him.”

In my view, if Stafford has solid protection, and he’s healthy, he’s a top three QB. I think O-line protection is more important for him than most. Give him that protection, and I take him over Rodgers. I take him over Hurts, and 99% of the QBs in the league. Problem is, the Rams have not kept up with the rest of the league when it comes to their O-line. They haven’t invested in elite talent in a long, long time . . . until Avila. But one guard or center does not make a line. They need an elite LT at the very least, and that does not exist on the roster. In the absence of an elite offensive line, you need a QB who can run, scramble, extend plays on his own. That’s not Stafford’s MO.

I dunno man. I don’t think you need an elite OL to win, just a solid one. The 2 LOTs in the last super bowl were Jordan Mailata (7th round pick) and Orlando Brown (3rd round). Both solid, neither elite.

Solid OLs do well in the league if other things are in place.

What the Rams are aiming for in their 2023 OL is to have one like the Saints glory days OLs with Brees, when they had fantastic (and big) guards who gave the qb space to step up. I think that’s what’s behind the Avila pick.

ZN, What’s your take on the schedule, as far as why it seems like they really stuck it to the Rams? The folks at NFL Live rated the Rams as having the second toughest schedule — unless I misread their graph. I thought it was supposed to be based on W/L record. Um, well, the Rams were 5-12, or did the league forget that part?

Not everyone is rating their schedule that tough, though it’s certainly not easy. PFF doesn’t even have it as a top 10 on their toughest schedules rankings.

The schedule is based on W/L but there are other factors. There’s the division, and there’s the AFC division they play. Those things are automatic, regardless of W/L.

One tough part is that they play 4 teams coming off of byes. But I’m not sure that’s deliberate on the league’s part. It seems more like the league doesn’t filter that kind of stuff out, as opposed to them deliberately setting teams up for that.

[Donald’s] embracing the Rams’ role as underdogs, not feeling much external pressure from those high expectations.

“I kinda like it. It’s like starting all over again from scratch,” Donald said this week. “We ain’t the team that’s talked about. It’s kind of like the little underdogs. You just get to work and just play. You ain’t got to worry about too much other stuff. You just get to play at a high level and just fly around and then wherever the chips may fall. Obviously, the media and everything will be talking how they want to talk. As long as we do our job and do what we need to do, we’re going to be in good position and be the type of team we want to be.”

Four teams played in the Conference Championship games last January. The Rams play three of them in the first five weeks of the season…
    Week 2: vs. SF
    Week 3: @ CIN
    Week 5: vs. PHI
    Cameron DaSilva@camdasilva
The Rams played 26 prime-time games from 2018-2022, but they’re only scheduled to play 2 night games in 2023
    .
They will be in Week 3 against the Bengals on Monday Night Football and in Week 16 against the Saints, a home game on Thursday Night Football. There are no Sunday Night Football games on the Rams’ schedule, nor will any of their six divisional matchups be in prime-time slots.

Los Angeles Rams schedule 2023: Staying healthy, rookie growth key vs. tough road

The 2023 Los Angeles Rams’ schedule has arrived — will it be the beginning of a comeback tour? Or a stern reality check for a very young defense and aging offense?

    Week 1 keys to victory

The Rams can take an early lead in the NFC West if they come out of the gate hot (read: the opposite of last year’s opener against Buffalo) against Seattle. A healthy quarterback Matthew Stafford and receivers Cooper Kupp and Van Jefferson would go a long way toward making them competitive — as would head coach Sean McVay getting back to his usual pattern of kicking the doors down on offense in season openers. It’ll be a tough environment in Seattle (and a hello again to Bobby Wagner).

Must-watch game: vs. Philadelphia Eagles, Week 5

In a year without many expectations, I’m selfishly picking this game because I believe it’ll be the biggest showcase of what a very rookie-heavy Rams defense has (or has not) learned and absorbed to that point. It’s going to be a litmus test for growth, against a searing-hot and very multiple Eagles offense.

    Toughest stretch: Weeks 1-18

Yes, you read that correctly. Have I mentioned that the Rams have about 50 new rookies? OK, maybe Week 10 isn’t too bad (it’s the bye week). Dear subscribers, there will be bumps along the road this season.

Game that has gotten tougher: at Indianapolis Colts, Week 4

This does sort of predicate on whether Anthony Richardson is playing quarterback by this time, in fairness. The Rams’ defense will feature a lot of young players so they’ll have to play very disciplined even if Richardson is developing into the role, because of his ability to move the ball in the air or on the ground and his size.

One game the Rams can’t afford to lose: One of the 49ers games, Weeks 2 or 18

“Afford” is doing a lot of work here, as I’ll reiterate again that anything is gravy for a team entering the season without external expectations (internally they believe they’re going to surprise some people).

But man, would they love to take a game from San Francisco during the regular season.

Best offense the Rams will face: Philadelphia Eagles, Week 5

The Eagles are multiple (thanks in part to the abilities of Jalen Hurts and his surrounding cast), incredibly strong up front, physical and well-coached.

Best defense the Rams will face: San Francisco 49ers, Weeks 2 and 18

Top defenses almost always regress year over year, but the 49ers brought in Steve Wilks to take over from former defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans and if I know anything about Wilks from my days in Carolina, he’ll have that group ready to go. It’s always a tough matchup for the Rams, on either side of the ball.

    Predicted record: 7-10

It is legitimately absurd to attempt to predict a record for this team considering its roster turnover and what happened in 2022. But, the assignment is the assignment!

While the defensive side of the roster looks pretty concerning as it currently stands, if Stafford and Kupp can stay healthy, and the Rams can get back to a more balanced offensive attack (behind a less-tattered offensive line), I can see them winning seven or eight games. It’s OK to want this team to “tank” for Caleb Williams or Drake Maye, sure, but remember — McVay coaches this team, and I am telling you, he’s going to try to win every game (as will Stafford, Kupp and Aaron Donald).

    Predicted NFC West finish: Third

There’s little reason to believe the 49ers won’t top the NFC West as they keep trying to capitalize on their Super Bowl contention window. Seattle’s offense looked strong in 2022 and could carry that forward. The Rams could surprise people (or not, who knows?!) but keeping them at No. 3 and the Cardinals at No. 4 for now seems safe.
