    My latest mock draft.

Thanks for that though personally, I’m not up enough on this draft to be able to say much.

I do have a question. I’ve heard that this is an unusually loaded draft. Have you hear that?

Over.the.Cap.com just lowered the Rams estimated 2024 cap space again.

    Now it’s 27.7 M (rounded up slightly).

They will not be able to do much with that.

They also do not list Shelton as an FA. His last year is 2024 so he’s a Ram in 2024. Spotrac.com also says he’s under contract in 2024 (https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/los-angeles-rams/coleman-shelton-25548/) That, however, contradicts some other reports.

Shelton aside, the big Rams internal UFAs remain as follows: Dotson, Wentz, Robinson, Witherspoon, Johnson, and Fuller. Unless they get more cap space from Noteboom and Allen, they will not be able to sign 3 of those, more like 2 at best.

I thought this was interesting. My first SB that I remember watching was SBIII. Jets over Colts. I guess, in retrospect, that wasn’t a bad place to start.

I got started in NFL interest later than most. My first super bowl was 13, in 78, Steelers/Cowboys. The game that included the famous Jackie Smith endzone drop. I was pulling for the Steelers (though to this day I feel bad for Smith).

Rams offensive assistants Nick Jones and KJ Black will join Raheem Morris’ staff in Atlanta, the Falcons announce. Two rising young coaches – OL and QB, respectively – who quietly made an impact in 2023 at their positions.

Well that is tricky, isnt it.   ‘Hold you accountable’ while also ‘having your back’

“I know you can do better than that.”

“We all make mistakes. Learn from it and keep on improving your game so you can be who you’re destined to be.”

Some coaches work by tearing guys down. Like Parcells. But you can be fair and even handed with that. Parcells used to ride LT for example. Once when they were practicing during the week to play the Rams, Parcells reminded LT that Irv Pankey gave him problems. He said something along the lines of Pat Swilling can beat Pankey, why don’t I just get him in here instead.

There is no crying in pass defense.

If I had to guess I would say that was in 1989. The Rams beat the Giants 31-10 in the regular season, with NYG getting zero sacks in the process. They met again in the playoffs and famously the Rams won in overtime. I think the story about Parcells riding LT comes from practicing for the playoff game. The Saints sacked Everett 12 times in 2 games that season, with Swilling getting 3 in one game and 1 in another. As it turns out LT got 2 sacks in that playoff game, though of course they lost.

    from https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/39199715/how-interim-coach-giff-smith-won-chargers-locker-room

Following one of the most embarrassing losses in team history, a 63-21 drubbing by the Las Vegas Raiders on “Thursday Night Football,” the Chargers fired coach Brandon Staley and general manager Tom Telesco. Smith, then the Chargers’ outside linebackers coach and longest-tenured coach on staff, was tapped to lead the team for the final three games of the season.

In two weeks, Smith’s approach has brought renewed energy to a Chargers team that appeared to be coasting into the offseason.

Multiple team sources described a culture where players felt alienated by Staley, who one team source said created a culture that felt like a “fraternity.”Smith has shifted the energy of this team and won players over, largely because of his commitment to holding every player accountable.

“He’ll obviously hold you accountable to what you got to do, but at the same time, he’s going to let you know that he also believes in you,” safety Alohi Gilman said. “Building confidence is, I think, as a coach is so underrated. I think that’s what his superpower is — that he’s able to build confidence in guys regardless of the circumstances, and that elevates players.”

“The key thing is he’s just real and he’s genuine,” Gilman said. “People who have that genuine connection, that’s leadership — that’s real — that people can actually connect to. And in a team setting, that’s how you build a culture. That’s how you win over a locker room of grown men. You need that. You need someone to also to hold you accountable, at the same time be like, ‘Hey bro, I got your back.'”

Defensive line/run game coordinator — Giff Smith

    From the wiki.

    As a coach:

Me: Smith was associated with 3 consecutiuve top 10 defenses in SD from 2018-20 under defensive coordinator Gus Bradley.  He knows the Staley system obviously, which is the system Chris Shula has been in as a coach since 2020 so no change is expected there. (Morris kept Staley’s system).

    IMO they need:

    CB
    nickel CB
    ILB 2
    OLB/edge
    3/4 DE

    OC
    OT depth
    QB 2a vet
RB 2(KW gets dinged so they need a #2 that’s better than the guys they already have…they went 1-3 with those guys when Wms was out)

    K

That’s a lot but they can also get a lot of it this year using all acquisitions methods at once: draft, high market FA, maybe a trade or 2, a good “ronin” pick up or 2 (like Robinson was).

If it were me I would act like none of the other draft picks (other than Avila, Turner, Young, Nacua, Allen) will come through. Then if a couple more do come through, it’s gravy.

Either way they went 10/7 without all those things and so are certainly competitive if they get even half of those things.

I doubt they can afford 4 free agents plus keep their own internal FAs. Actually I think at best they can afford to buy 1 big outside FA plus keep 2-3 of their own. I don’t say that after having studied the numbers closely. It’s more just eyeballing it. But eyeballing it, that’s how it looks.

Rams promote Chris Shula to defensive coordinator

    Jourdan Rodrigue and Mark Puleo

    https://theathletic.com/5245646/2024/02/01/rams-defensive-coordinator-chris-shula/?source=emp_shared_article

The Los Angeles Rams looked in-house for their new defensive coordinator and promoted linebackers coach and pass rush coordinator Chris Shula to the role, according to a league source. The spot was left vacant after Raheem Morris took the head coaching gig with the Atlanta Falcons.

Shula, the grandson of legendary coach Don Shula, has been on Sean McVay’s staff since 2017. He started as an assistant linebackers coach with the Rams before rising to outside linebackers coach then linebackers coach then pass game coordinator and defensive backs coach. He got his start in the NFL with the San Diego Chargers in 2015.

Shula, who played linebacker, was teammates with McVay at Miami of Ohio.

The promotion will preserve some continuity for McVay’s staff, which has lost quarterbacks coach Zac Robinson, assistant head coach Jimmy Lake, defensive line coach Eric Henderson and assistant special teams coordinator Jeremy Springer, along with Morris, this offseason.

In 2023, the Rams’ defense buckled up down the stretch, allowing fewer than 20 points in six of their last nine regular-season games.

    A changeup for McVay

McVay has not promoted internally for any of his coordinator positions until Shula, who has worked under Wade Phillips, Brandon Staley and Morris (Staley was also in strong consideration for the job, sources said).

It’s a jump for Shula, but it seemed clear McVay was trying to prepare his longtime assistant for the role with moves between defensive backs and linebackers jobs and a shot at calling the defense for a preseason game each year.

Until Shula speaks with media, we won’t know what his defensive philosophy specifically as a coordinator is — but hiring in-house like this does give McVay a lot of control over the system and Shula has experience in each of the last two variations of the Rams’ current scheme, initially installed in 2020.

The Rams will promote LBs/pass rush coordinator Chris Shula to defensive coordinator, a source confirms. He has been a defensive assistant on McVay’s staff since the head coach took over in LA in 2017, now gets his shot

Imo the Rams wanted Evero. Once Carolina made it official that he is staying in Carolina, Rams went with their next choice, Shula. I’m fine with the hire, I am in wait and see mode. I don’t know his style of play or tendencies.

I like this promotion. He has been under the influence of Wade Philips, Brandon Staley and Raheem Morris. Scheme continuity and familiarity with the players are big factors that go a long way.

If the Rams didn’t hire Chris Shula at defensive coordinator, somebody would have. Dolphins interviewed him. Eagles interviewed Shula last February.

    JAKE ELLENBOGEN@JKBOGEN
McVay was developing Chris Shula around the defense. He’s been a linebackers coach, outside linebackers coach, pass game coordinator, pass rush coordinator and defensive backs coach. He’s been all over the defense.

Breer says Spags clogged all of Lamar’s running lanes with a kindof fake blitz-ish-ness.  They dared Lamar to beat them in the air.  And he couldnt do it.

They were run blitzing and daring Baltimore to pass. The thing about a run blitz of course is that if you pass instead then it’s a pass blitz.

I said something somewhere about the Spags defensive system. It’s taken from the system Reid’s DC ran with the Eagles way back when. Among other things, it builds in really smart blitz packages.

I originally read up on all this when the Rams hired Spags. But we never really saw the Spags defense with the Rams because by the time he had built what he wanted in 2011, a massive injury epidemic wiped that defense out. He was forced to start corners they signed off the street during the season. I once asked Demoff in a chat session if the injuries were so extensive in 2011 that they just started to think it was funny every time someone new got injured. He basically said yes, in its own dark way it got so preposterous it was actually kind of funny. In the history of Rams massive injury epidemics it ranks  2nd to 2022.

So I researched the Spags defense for nothing. It never went anywhere with the Rams.

Here I am, then, 14 years later, able to make some comments on the Spags defense in a KC/SF super bowl.

IMO? That defense will be what wins the game and allows Mahomes to outscore SF.

Another loss for Baltimore: The #Titans are expected to hire #Ravens DBs coach Dennard Wilson as their new DC, per @Schultz_Report. Wilson was a potential option to replace Mike Macdonald, but he opts to take a job on Brian Callahan’s staff in Tennessee.

Well, that was startling.   Astonishing foot speed by AD

Enh. I think AD is a product of Morris’s scheme. And Phillips’s scheme too, before that. And Williams’s scheme before that. I think that as elite defensive tackles go, AD is just a game manager type.
