Blaine Grisak@bgrisakTST Raheem Morrishas officially taken with him both Zac Robinson and Jimmy Lake from the Rams’ staff to Atlanta

Assistant head coach – Jimmy Lake

We didn’t hear much about Lake. He was with Morris in 2010-11 as a DB coach at Tampa. Lake was the head coach of Washington from 2020-21 until he was fired for pushing one of his own players to break up an alteraction on the sideline. He was out of football in 2022 and apparently at Morris’s behest the Rams brought him on in 2023. So now he’s Morris’s DC in Atlanta.

More on Lake for whoever’s interested: https://www.atlantafalcons.com/news/jimmy-lake-named-falcons-defensive-coordinator-rams-washington-huskies

Raheem Morrishas officially taken with him both Zac Robinson and Jimmy Lake from the Rams’ staff to Atlanta to be the offensive and defensive coordinator. What began as an offseason where Rams may not have many staff changes has become quite the opposite.

the chiefs defense was the most underrated unit in football this season, it finished #2 in offensive points allowed, an eyelash away from #1, and has come up big in the postseason, including holding the ravens #3 scoring offense to just 10 today. tip of the hat to spags.

Ejiro Evero would be one of the top candidates for the Rams DC job, if somehow available. Joe reports here that so far Carolina has blocked him from lateral DC interviews with the Jaguars, Dolphins and Giants as he is, at this time, still under contract…something to monitor…

Coach “Captain Insane-o” Campbell blew it big time.  Kick the damn FGs

That was a screwed up game. Lions shoulda had it.

But what happened today was, both of the more “playoff veteran” teams won it.

Lions, 280 yards in the first half, including 148 rushing. 9ers 131 yards. Goff 13 of 20, Purdy 7 of 15.

    Long way to go though.

Baltimore starting to take the game back, 2nd half.

I spoke too soon. Ravens, 2 endzone turnovers.

Spags defense doing this, just like in super bowl 42 with the Giants against the Patz.

I’m in and out on the Chiefs/Ravens game. It’s on in another room and I’m not really sitting down watching it, just watching parts. It’s tied 7/7 at the end of the 1st.

Its interesting that McVay loses so many coaches.   I wonder if any other coaches have to replace as many assistants annually.   Andy Reid?  Belichick?  Harbaugh?   Shanahan? w v

Part of it is that McV likes young, tuned-in, “I’m part of what’s new and hip” style offensive coaches. And as it happens, at the exact same time, that became a holy grail in the league. So…the league goes, why research coaches? McVay already did that for us. (But then you wonder why Mike LaFleur didn’t get any bites as a head coach.) Anyway. The position that sells for the Rams is qb coach. So far that has produced 2 coordinators and 2 head coaches in the last 7 years. (Olson is 61 and has been around, he’s not like the others).

i’m not sure how i feel about this.

With just one exception, the McVay Rams lose their qb coaches every year.

    Rams qb coaches under McV:

2017: Greg Olson. A great old veteran coach who had been with the Rams before (2006). Went to the Raiders, is now the qb coach with Seattle.

2018: Zac Taylor. Became a head coach.

2019: Shane Waldron. Went to Seattle as OC, now with the Bears.

2020: Liam Coen, who was an assistant qb coach (they did not have an official qb coach). Went to Kentucky, came back to the Rams, went back to Kentucky.

    2021: Kevin O’Connell. Became a head coach.

    2022-23: Zac Robinson.

So Robinson broke all Rams records for a qb coach under McVay by being in that position for 2 years.

New Falcons OC Zac Robinson interviewed a bunch of places. But he did it knowing that if Raheem Morris got an HC job, he was going with his buddy/Rams staffmate. So Atlanta it is.

Rams quarterbacks coach Zac Robinson leaving for Atlanta Falcons

    GARY KLEIN

    https://www.latimes.com/sports/rams/story/2024-01-27/rams-offensive-coordinator-zac-robinson-atlanta-falcons

Rams coach Sean McVay has another spot to fill on his coaching staff.

Zac Robinson, the Rams’ quarterbacks coach, will become offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons, people with knowledge of the situation not authorized to speak publicly said.

The people requested anonymity because Robinson’s hiring has not been announced by the Falcons.

Robinson, 37, coached for the Rams for four seasons and will be reunited with Raheem Morris, the former Rams defensive coordinator who was hired as the Falcons’ head coach this week.

Robinson was the assistant quarterbacks coach in 2019, when Jared Goff was the Rams’ starter. In 2022, he succeeded Kevin O’Connell as quarterbacks coach and has worked with Matthew Stafford the last two seasons.

Stafford rebounded from a season-ending injury in 2022, played through hip and thumb injuries this season and led the Rams to the playoffs.

It has to be round 2 or 3.

i differ slightly. and although the rams were very close to beating the lions. and they were very close to beating the heavily favored ravens, they still need help on the offensive line, in the secondary and a pass rusher. i think a backup running back will have to be later if they don’t think it’s evans. although they do have an extra third rounder so maybe there. if williams misses four or five games due to injury the rams will have to adjust. if williams faces an injury worse than that. like season ending. then it almost doesn’t matter. i think kyren is that good. or again. the rams can opt to trade back. which again i wouldn’t be against it.

Without Wms it honestly doesn’t matter who else you draft in rounds 1-3. That’s why I am so adamant about them hopefully getting a 1B back. They need a back they can win with even when Wms is out. And if Wms isn’t out, having 2 backs, a 1A and a 1B, is a good thing.

After round 3 it is dicey on picking RBs. In fact, Wms aside, the last good, productive RB the Rams drafted after round 3 was …drumroll … nobody. Wms is the only RB picked after round 3 to make something of himself in the entire history of Rams drafting, from 1937 to 2023.

On the SUBJ of running backs, I was pondering a week or so ago about what this offense would be like with Steven Jackson in his prime. Good lord. Can you imagine?

Yep. And in return, Steven in his prime deserved this offense.

You no doubt already know that Wms is from St. Louis, was a Rams fan growing up, and his favorite player was Jackson. Like I said you know that, but I just like saying it.
