InvaderRamModeratorItās a small, small sample size without pads on. But my eye is on sixth-round rookie receiverĀ Jordan Whittington, particularly his play energy away from the ball despite contact being limited.
maybe the thing i’m most excited about so far in the offseason. as you and others have mentioned before it’s unusual when you hear and read this much about a rookie prospect this early. it’s not just jourdan. i don’t know if sean mcvay has said anything yet, but lafleur was talking about him the other day. it seems like other members of the press have made a note about how much he has stood out.
now if sean mcvay starts talking about him, that’s when my ears will really start perking up.
this offense could be so special. just need to hear more positive things about avila at center and allen at tight end.
With veteran tight endĀ Tyler HigbeeĀ recovering from knee surgery, tight endĀ Davis AllenĀ appeared to pick up right where he left off with Stafford.
InvaderRamModeratorWhy do I believe this will change? The Rams have dropped plenty of clues over this offseason. The most interesting sign is their moves on the coaching staff. TEs coach Nick Caley is taking over as Passing Game Coordinator. Caley’s roots go back to New England, working with TEs and FBs with the Patriots going back to 2017. Each year Caley was in New England, they were among the top teams in using 12, 21, and 22 package looks. The Rams’ new hires also indicate this as well.
Their new quarterbacks coach, Dave Ragone, arrived from Atlanta, where he served as offensive coordinator under Arthur Smith. Atlanta led the NFL in 12-personnel looks last season, and was top-five in 21, 22, and 13-personnel usage as well. Nate Scheelhaase, their new offensive assistant coach, came from Iowa State, who was near the top of CFB in 12 and 13-personnel formations. Another recently hired offensive assistant, Jerry Schuplinski, arrived from Las Vegas. With the Raiders, Schuplinski coached tight ends in 2023 and was the Giants’ quarterbacks coach in 2019 and 2020

InvaderRamModeratorthis might not be a bad thing.
sounds like corum is absorbing the playbook at an accelerated rate. with williams out, hopefully he’s out on the field applying that knowledge. have him as ready as possible for the regular season.
InvaderRamModeratorWilliams is built like a slot-only cornerback at 5-foot-9 and 187 pounds, but heās been a great outside cornerback for years, and that was just as true in 2023, when he allowed 51 catches on 86 targets for 613 yards, 178 yards after the catch, two touchdowns, four interceptions, 18 pass breakups, and an opponent passer rating of 69.6. Through his NFL career, Williams has allowed 10 touchdowns to 11 interceptions, and has a lifetime opponent passer rating of 76.7. Itās safe to say that nobody expected that when he came out of college.
yeah. i’m just excited as a whole about this revamped secondary. with the biggest question mark being white. i think williams will be fine. curl is still young but has a ton of experience. and then the biggest thing to me is mcvay has been vocal about lake. i don’t think that can be overlooked. yeah. revamped secondary. adding verse and fiske to the front seven.
still wish donald was here though.
InvaderRamModeratorIf he can develop, that would be an obvious big plus.
not just him but all of the second year players. turner, nacua, avila, allen…
InvaderRamModeratorHelp me understandā¦ā¦.Why does his statement state negative 32 days for SF, then the list states negative 21 days for SF? why the different values?
I had trouble with that too. Heās not very clear sometimes.
i think he’s trying to say that when you include only games with negative rest edge it’s -32. but when you total all games, some of which have a positive rest edge, the total is -21.
InvaderRamModeratorwell. this just makes the corum pick that much more prescient. i think that’s the right word.
InvaderRamModeratorThe look between RB coach Ron Gould and Kyren Williams (plus the Ronnie Rivers smirk) in the first @RamsNFL team meeting of 2024, as Sean McVay puts on the film of newly-signed Pro Bowl guard Jonah Jackson.
that is freaking priceless!
i am getting amped up just looking at them.

InvaderRamModeratorwell you gotta figure stafford is asking for at least that much.
or is he willing to take a discount as long as he gets more guaranteed money? wishful thinking?

InvaderRamModeratorIt is evident that defensive strategy has changed for the secondary. Gone are the days of 2 CBs, a slot, a FS and a SS. They are mixing up what they are doing, and the offense canāt tell pre-snap necessarily what those guys are going to do.
you guys are convincing me. i feel a lot better than i did several hours ago.
i definitely think after reading this that after the running game the secondary is what i’ll be watching the most.
InvaderRamModeratorItās the secondary that has to do most of the multiplicity/disguised coverage action.
well that’s good to know. i like curl. i don’t think he’s talked about enough. or maybe the other teams know something the rams don’t. i choose to believe the rams outsmarted everyone else unless the actual games show differently. i like white. it’s a gamble, but a smart one i think. and williams should be fine.
i’d still feel better if the rams brought jj back. maybe with trading skow they can do something. but if not i think lake should be fine too.
and i expect jones to step up. obviously he’s a front seven guy. but he does a lot of things well, and he’s a leader.
InvaderRamModeratorfurthermore with a rookie coordinator and a young defense is it a good idea to make the defense so “multiple”? seems like “multiple” is another way of saying more complex or difficult. would it be better to simplify it? players having less experience executing that kind of defense and a coordinator with no experience calling those plays?
InvaderRamModeratorramsman34 The D front will be very situation-multiple. The more Shula can mix up the fronts, personnel, stunt/blitz looks, the more issues it creates for opposing offensive game plans and protections.
i’m curious to see how shula handles this defense. losing donald sucks for sure.
but more than that. going with a young defense. a very young first time coordinator. that could hurt as well. i don’t know. morris entered the job with a lot more experience. he’s a leader. what is shula? is that a good mix? rookie coordinator with a young defense?
InvaderRamModeratorso kupp, nacua, robinson, atwell, and whittington. with whittington taking over a lot of the st roles that skow filled i’m assuming. there’s still the 6th wr spot but shouldn’t be difficult to fill.
InvaderRamModeratorthat’s just not a good list. pff has him ranked five. that sounds more accurate.
InvaderRamModeratori’m glad to hear you’re getting better. look forward to seeing you again on this board.
InvaderRamModeratorlooks like the 11 personnel podcast might be over.
Listeners of 11 Personnel may have noticed some gradual changes over the last weeks and months. The Athletic audio team has limited bandwidth and will no longer be producing the show as they adjust their plan for team specific audio. I have loved talking with you guys directly.

InvaderRamModeratoryeah.Ā i should have clarified.Ā rams writer.Ā and to clarify futher that’s in 31 years of following the rams.Ā i can’t speak on any rams writers before that time.
zimmerman as in dr. z?Ā i enjoyed reading him.Ā that was like ages ago.
InvaderRamModeratorYup.Ā Her watch in LA will be over soon.Ā Ā And we will never see her like again.
truly. the best i’ve read maybe ever. and i’ve enjoyed her podcast as well.
i don’t think anyone else has come even close.
InvaderRamModeratoron top of that if the rams can win a superbowl after losing a truly generational player? that would be something.
InvaderRamModeratora couple things. how different is what the rams do compared to other teams? is it that innovative or is this just a variation of what other front offices do?
also. ultimately the purpose of all this is to win superbowls. and kansas city seems to be setting that benchmark.
the rams under snead have been to two. won one. they’ve had some good drafts. made some pretty bold moves. have had sustained success since mcvay was hired. you got this season. the 25 season. and then the 26 season hopefully mcvay and snead are still here. that’ll mark ten years of the mcsnead era of rams football. hopefully stafford is still here. i wonder how we’ll look back on everything at that point.
InvaderRamModeratorcorum might be my favorite player from this draft.
can’t remember who i said last time but i definitely think corum is my favorite player from this draft class. haha!
him and williams in the backfield. jackson, avila, and dotson blowing holes open in the middle.
i think this will be the most fun watching this offense since 2018.
InvaderRamModeratori think it’s still better than anything anyone else is writing. it gets a little wordy, but it is interesting to me her going into all the details of how they collect information on all the players.
the one thing that worries me with this system is it’s so proprietary that i wonder how difficult it is to bring in fresh ideas. to have input it seems like you need to know a lot of the different colors and symbols that are involved. and unless you’ve been working with it for a long time it might be hard to just dive right in. or maybe it’s just intuitive how it works.
InvaderRamModeratorTo be honest that sounds like much of it is just 2024. Theyāre looking to quickly re-establish the defense so they presumably sacrifice some physical traits while looking for older players who can start now.
that’s what it looks like to me as well.
and yeah. it’s not what they would necessarily do every draft but they’re very much in a win now mode.

InvaderRamModeratorI watched about 30 seconds of the first highlight vid above ā and its all i needed to see.Ā This kid has awesome shiftiness.Ā Ā He can fake defenders out of their shoes. Jeezus.Ā Ā Like a small barry sanders. Perfect pick.
seriously. i know almost nothing about these prospects first of all. just to get that out of the way.
my initial impression from afar was that he was more of a workman type rb. but when i clicked on his highlight reel i was blown away by how shifty he was. and it’s backed up by his agility numbers.
and then running behind this revamped oline? i think the running game could be better than last year’s with both him and kyren.
InvaderRamModeratori want verse to be better than leonard floyd.
not that floyd was bad. he was good. but i want verse to be better.
