InvaderRamModeratorthe only thing about christian hackenberg is he seems to be all potential at this point. just very raw. i’ve never seen him play, so i’m just going off what i’ve read. and stats. he’s never completed more than 60% of his passes in a season. 56.5% for his career. career ypa of 6.9. those are not pro qb numbers.
InvaderRamModeratormore importantly maybe welker can teach these young receivers something. i don’t think there’s a leader in that receiver corps. definitely don’t think it’s britt.
i think this could work out. but i worry about his head. he had 3 concussions in less than a year.
InvaderRamModeratorhey. maybe they’ll run some slant routes now???
ha!
InvaderRamModeratorwes? i mean shoot. he’s like a better but older and concussed version of amendola. i like it!
i just hope he stays healthy.
InvaderRamModeratorreally like Mannion. I wanted the Rams to draft him. I like Cook better.
As for the draft, I can see Hackenberg dropping. How far? He has all the physical tools. Is he the QB you want? I could see throwing Philly’s draft choice at him.
this passing offense stinks. we can come up with very legitimate reasons as to why this passing offense stinks. and we’ve gone over them many times over. but this passing offense stinks.
i’m still waiting for the season to end, but if i’m snead, i’m scouting qbs extra hard this year. ha!
gotta get this right. can’t let all this talent go to waste.
InvaderRamModeratorthat’s funny coming from rodney harrison.
nevertheless. there’s always going to be questions. especially from a gregg williams coached defense. but like i said before, i admire joyner. he came into this league with a good reputation. and i tend to believe that he wasn’t trying to be dirty.
InvaderRamModeratorJoyner said he did not try to hurt Bridgewater, adding: “I know that guy. I grew up across the railroad tracks from him. My mom knows his mom. My dad knows his mom. I would never intentionally do a dirty play like that on Teddy Bridgewater.
i believe him. joyner comes across as a good guy. i believe he was just playing physical. nothing more. unless i find out something different.
InvaderRamModeratorneeded a healthy defense. missing best defensive end. best safety.
still gotta wait until end of season, but foles is looking like a liability.
InvaderRamModeratorhmmm. excited to see alexander play. williams had nothing but good things to say about him but maybe cuz he’s trying to pump him up.
majorly bummed about quinn. i feel like the defense is gonna have to play lights out if the rams want to win.
InvaderRamModeratorhappy birthday, herzog.

InvaderRamModeratorInteresting. There is only one elite team in the top 10 (Pats) and there are 4 losing teams in the top 10.
I guess ‘toughness’ (as Bruschi defines it) isn’t that important.
or at least toughness alone won’t get you to the playoffs.
kind of sickens me that the pats are not only a “tough” team but have a hall of fame quarterback and a sophisticated offense to go with it.
November 6, 2015 at 8:24 pm in reply to: Tedy Bruschi: How tough are the Patriots? Not as tough as the Rams #33682
InvaderRamModeratori don’t watch much of the other teams, but the rams do come across as a very tough team.
now if only they could figure out the passing game…
InvaderRamModeratori like the tight end from alabama too. and i don’t like cook.
somehow they need to get another weapon for foles.
i would put a premium on re-signing jenkins. i’m starting to change my thinking on him.
as far as first round, yeah, just draft best player available. i think they’re in a position to do that. it’d be nice if it was a defensive back. make a strength even more of a strength.

InvaderRamModeratorhappy birthday, mackeyser.
InvaderRamModeratornew coordinator (who happens to be a rookie coordinator)
new system
quality of receivers
green olineplus as you say, new qb.
I am not sure the receivers are so bad, though. Cook, Kendricks, Britt, and Quick all played better last year. That means it’s at least in them to play at least that well this year. There’s something going on with chemistry, being in sync, and so on. Same thing happened last year at first with the defense.
it’s true that the wide receivers are performing worse than last year. but then again, they were never all that good.
for example, if the wide receivers were bruce and holt, i suspect things wouldn’t be as bad.
but the rams don’t need that caliber a receiver. they just need to get to a competent level.
November 4, 2015 at 10:39 pm in reply to: 101, 11/3 — Football Outsiders on Rams/Vikes + Clayton #33536
InvaderRamModeratorhere’s another stat from football outsiders.
success rate. measures the running back’s consistency.
gio bernard ranks first with a success rate of 59%.
some others
devonta freeman – 54% 6th
le’veon bell – 50% 9th
jamaal charles – 48% 14th
melvin gordon – 48% 15th
todd gurley – 45% 24th
adrian peterson – 44% 26th
matt forte – 42% 28thnow having a high dvoa combined with a relatively low success rate means that the player is mixing explosive runs with a lot of stuffs. so the argument does hold some water. but still. i expect his success rate to go up as the oline continues to gel. interesting stuff.
InvaderRamModeratorlove how michael brockers makes it a point to credit donald with motivating him to do better.
you just don’t hear that about other players as much. maybe it’s cuz they both play tackle. but we’ve heard it from long and quinn as well. and it doesn’t just seem like lip service. i don’t hear that as much about quinn or the other stars on this defense. just donald.
InvaderRamModeratorThis of course does not factor in 3rd down with the qb in obvious passing situations.
But…. <strong class=”d4pbbc-bold”>FOLES: Passes over the middle
2013: 34 of 317 (10.7% of total attempts), 73.5% completions, 13.09 YPA, 154.7 qb rating
2014: 37 of 311 (11.9% of total attempts), 64.9% completions, 11.73 YPA, 141.0 qb rating
2015: 20 of 187 (10.7% of total attempts), 65.0% completions, 6.45 YPA, 101.9 qb rating
…
yeah. my gut instinct is it isn’t all foles. i am up and down on him. but when i have a level head. my instinct is that there’s many other factors out of his control. i mean we list them all the time.
new coordinator (who happens to be a rookie coordinator)
new system
quality of receivers
green olinei’m probably missing others. i just want to see improvement at this point. something to give me hope next year that this passing offense will be something other than what it is right now. although the truth is. slight improvements here and there will add up to make enough of a difference to make this team a contender. i mean one year of experience for cignetti. one year to develop a relationship with his receivers. one year of this oline gelling. and one more year of experience for foles (and this isn’t exactly a grizzled veteran we’re talking about here). that could be enough to vault this team all the way to mediocrity. and honestly mediocrity is all they need considering how good the defense and the running game are.
InvaderRamModeratorlooks like havenstein is quickly becoming a jon runyan type player for fisher.
slightly worried about robinson. but again. i’m waiting until the end of next year to make any firm judgment on him.
this line could be something else next year. it’s a slow simmer right now, but it could end up real good if we’re patient.
i kind of blew this minnesota game off as not a real test for the offensive line, but i take that back. they’re decent in the pass rush. certainly better than anything the browns or the 9ers could muster up. so let’s see how they do.
InvaderRamModeratorWell I’m not a hundred percent sure we can
extrapolate much from the last two games.
I mean, the Rams got out to a lead and
Fisher probly really trusted the defense
and running game to win the last two.I’m not sure the same offensive-approach
and play-calling will stay in place
as the Rams face teams that can score
more points. I dunno.Btw, you can ‘usually’ tell when Fisher thinks
he’s an underdog because he tries to steal
a possession with Hekker-Trickery.w
vthat’s good point. i think we’re all getting perhaps a little more nervous than usual. this team seems close doesn’t it? with one of the few weaknesses being the passing game. so maybe it’s causing people to overanalyze foles and the receivers.
i think the team is actually good enough to make the playoffs without a competent passing game. shoot. if the rams could get their ypa up a yard. and get their total yardage to around the low 20s or high teens. they’d be in contention to go to the superbowl. probably won’t happen this year though. hopefully, next year.
November 4, 2015 at 7:03 pm in reply to: 101, 11/3 — Football Outsiders on Rams/Vikes + Clayton #33524
InvaderRamModeratorby the way i did one for gio bernard as well who had the highest dvoa meaning value per play.
320 yards 71 carries 4.51 yards per carry.
also. gurley ranks 8th in dvoa. for some perspective, le’veon bell who some consider the best back in the league is ranked 2nd in dvoa. so again. gurley has some way to go. but it’s not too far off.
November 4, 2015 at 6:58 pm in reply to: 101, 11/3 — Football Outsiders on Rams/Vikes + Clayton #33523
InvaderRamModeratori thought i’d put this post here because the football outsiders guy comments on how gurley has been getting stuffed a lot. and then over at the herd. there was some post about how balzer said gurley was 3 yards and a cloud of dust combined with the occasional long rip which inflated his stats. and while that may be true, i think it’s slightly exaggerated. i’d put him at about middle of the road in terms of getting consistent yards, and it’s definitely something he needs to improve on. he gets stuffed a lot. but he’s way more than just the long runs he gets.
i think freeman is one of the most consistent running backs in terms of churning out positive yards every carry. so i took his yards and subtracted the longest run from each game and calculated his yards per carry. i did the same with gurley – one including all 5 games and one including just his first four starts.
devonta freeman
571 yards 144 carries 3.97 yards per carrytodd gurley (5 games)
345 yards 89 carries 3.88 yards per carrytodd gurley (4 starts)
340 yards 84 carries 4.05 yards per carryso again. he’s way more than just the insanely long run he pulls off once per game. shoot if you took those 4 starts without the long runs. he’s still having a heck of a rookie season! i mean people gotta realize he averages 6.1 yards per carry. there’s no one else averaging over 5 yards a carry until you get to the 15th ranked rusher gio bernard!
i know this isn’t the most sophisticated analysis. but my only point is this is one of the most impressive first four starts ever. especially when you consider he’s less than a year removed from acl surgery. and he’s doing it with no passing offense to speak of. now notice i said start. he’s still got 9 games to go. it means nothing if he falters after this. and he’s got a whole nfl career ahead of him. so in the grand scheme of things this means nothing. but i’m hopeful. that this is all real. because if it is, we’re all in for a treat, guys!
November 3, 2015 at 6:22 pm in reply to: Prediction thread – Minnesota Vikings – out of doors #33477
InvaderRamModeratorthis might sound simplistic. i don’t know. but i think gurley gives this team a new found attitude on offense. one they haven’t had since steven jackson. and despite how horrible the passing offense might be, i think the leadership gurley has demonstrated so early can be a difference maker. the only difference being steven jackson was in the twilight of his career under fisher. gurley is just getting started.
on defense, i don’t worry about a letdown so much. they seem much more business like than in year’s past. the problem is is that minnesota’s strength on offense play right into the rams’ weakness on defense. washington gave them a lot of problems in the second week. and i could see minnesota doing the same. not only that but this is at minnesota.
we’ll see. it’ll be tough. i’d feel so much better if foles, britt, and cook haven’t looked so bad.

InvaderRamModeratorjust thinking about greg robinson right now. i’m thinking his third year is the target year to see a breakout year. just given how raw he is. and the nature of the left tackle position. i still think he’s going to end up being a great pick there. just needs time.
InvaderRamModeratorbut. the competition is also significantly weaker.
green bay, pittsburgh, and seattle all rank in the top 10. cleveland and san francisco are in the bottom half.
i wanna see how they do against cincinnati and detroit. they both rank in the top 10. i think that’ll be a better indication of where this oline is at. i think they’ve already shown they’ve got ability in run blocking.
InvaderRamModeratori agree on barron, dak. what a find. especially with ogletree out. he’s like all over the field it seems. pass defense. run defense. pass rush. he’s a big dude.
InvaderRamModeratorthe other main difference? seattle was averaging around 7-8 ypa during those 2 seasons. something like 8.5 in 2013 and 7.5 in 2014. rams right now are at 7.0. can they get it up to 8.0?
they need to get the mid range passing game going. they need to use the middle of the field. cigs better figure this out.
InvaderRamModeratoralso want to add this.
seattle in the 2 years they made it to the superbowl the passing offense ranked a remarkable 26th and 27th in the league. so the rams rank 31st this year. i think a rise in the rankings to the low 20s would be enough. high teens would be even better. but it’s not such a gap as one would think.
the main thing they need to do??? they need to get better on third downs!!! they absolutely stink on third downs. so what does that mean? does the offense lack confidence? i don’t know. but i hope cigs can figure it out.
InvaderRamModeratorbut against the niners, he was untouched. now maybe he is getting bulgerized. i don’t know. but some of it is him. he might be closer to the foles of last year than the one who played two years ago.
the one think i won’t fault fisher for is having a run based offense. it works. seattle proved it. going to a more pass based offense isn’t going to suddenly make foles a better qb. a good qb can play in any system. now that’s not to say i think foles is necessarily doomed. again. i’ll just let the whole year play out before making any concrete judgments. right now it’s not looking great. but again. lots of moving parts right now.
the one thing i will fault him for is the young oline. but what are ya gonna do? they looked better. but it was against a weak pass rush. again. this could work out in the end in that they have at least 3 really young promising prospects. they can only get better.
personnel decisions regarding wide receivers haven’t looked good either. for whatever reason they’ve picked disappointments in free agency and the draft outside of tavon austin. i was hoping bailey could emerge this year, but that hasn’t happened. quick is slowly becoming a bust as is the signing of britt.
i also wonder if the rams offense would have been better off with a veteran offensive coordinator. but again. who was even available? and would they even want to take on a project like this under a conservative head coach such as jeff fisher?
InvaderRamModeratorthey definitely need a third guy to complement the gurley austin duo. it shoulda been cook but it’s apparent that’s not going to happen.
and cignetti is still learning. never been an nfl coordinator before. perhaps fisher was a bit short sighted putting so much inexperience on the table with the oc and the oline.
thinking about it more and more. while foles is definitely limited there’s definitely other factors coming into play. but i want to see progress. if i can get that then next year becomes even bigger. as it is i think the rams can still make the playoffs this year.
