ZooeyModeratorThat’s interesting.
I’d like to see the 60 years prior to that as well.
ZooeyModeratorI don’t really blame QBs for strip sack fumbles. You have to expose the ball in order to throw it, and if your arm gets hit when you are cocking to throw, that’s just a good play by the defense. I do blame Goff for the fumble when running, though. If he’s going to tuck and run, he’s got to secure the ball.
I completely forgot about Bradford. I liked Bradford, but it’s really hard to rank him since he played on some of the worst teams I’ve ever rooted for, and suffered some injuries. I’d like to see what Bradford could have done on this team. I’d guess he would be better than Goff, but who knows?
I will grant that Everett’s phantom sack is the most ignominious moment in Rams’ history, but he could make every throw.
ZooeyModeratorWe have different ideas of “will to victory.”
And I bet the qbs that regularly meet your definition are a very short list. I mean throughout the league and across time. Even Warner showed he wasn’t the same when he did not have a top OL, a hall of fame RB, and two hall of fame WRs. In Arizona he did have Fitz.
Meanwhile, it is significant, and not negligible, and part of the actual equation, that Goff has been an important part of several Rams wins that could not have happened without the passing game working at the end of close or tied games.
BTW I rank Goff higher than Bulger and I liked Bulger. There are things Goff can do that Bulger just couldn’t.
Okay, so I’m not sure how far apart we really are here because I agree with that (except I like Bulger better), but I can’t help but filter your opinion with the knowledge that you were called out today in the Chat for womanly cowardice by somebody, and I think that tarnishes your opinion somewhat.
ZooeyModeratorWe have different ideas of “will to victory.”
I see that as an incidence in which the team is not performing well, and the QB makes plays he shouldn’t make, beyond the range of expectation. Yes, Goff has led drives that set up wins, but he did so with mostly clean pockets and mostly open receivers. Goff’s not BAD. I’m not advocating turning the page at QB like Herzog is. I think he IS good enough to win a Super Bowl. I don’t think he’s going to ever win an MVP, let alone get inducted into the HOF. Or start a Pro Bowl. Or end a season in the top 3 QBs.
In my life:
1. Warner
2. Bulger
3. Everett
4. GoffI dunno. Chris Miller was good, but played on bad teams, and had his best years elsewhere. I leave Gabriel out because I was a kid and it was the first football I watched, and so I can’t say, really. He was a god to me, but I can’t evaluate anything. So… I give Goff 4th place. He might pass Everett in my estimation, but that’s where I rank him now. He’s good enough. I just think it’s pretty obvious at this point that he’s also capable of screwing a game up, too. He might have screwed up today’s game. He sure didn’t do enough to win it.
ZooeyModeratorWell, I think Goff has hit his ceiling. He is good, but not great. He plays very well when the game is going well, and he struggles going uphill. I don’t remember a single game where Goff willed the team to victory. He can make very precise throws a lot, but always has that “throw behind Kupp who was open in the flat” kind of thing. That INT was a terrible throw, as bad as Brady’s on Monday. He’s 10-15. And that’s fine… but McVay has not yet figured out how to win, either. He’s a master tactician, and a mediocre strategist. He’s still young and inexperienced, so I wouldn’t say McVay has hit his ceiling, but he’s not elite yet. I don’t see him outfoxing other coaches at this point in his career. I don’t think there’s an excuse for losing this game. There are reasons, but no excuses. A legitimate contender does not lose that game. The Rams are good, and they are playoff bound, and there is still time to get better, but that is a bad loss imo.
Goff’s two TOs were his fault totally. Neither one was a great defensive play. Both were Goff’s errors.
If it weren’t for Aaron Donald, that game would have been much worse.
And what is Jalen doing on the FG? C’mon, man.
The Rams are still in a good position, and I think they still have a good shot of winning the division, but the Super Bowl goes through New Orleans, not Los Angeles, and that’s where we are. The thing is… I don’t know what the Rams do about this. There are no gaping holes on this team. The secondary is outstanding, the DL is very good, the LBs do their job, the OL has been a strength, their RBs are good enough, their TEs are adequate, their WRs are among the best units going, their punter is the best there is, the QB is in the top half of the league and pushing the top third, and it seems they even found an acceptable PK. So… I dunno. It’s a good team, but not a great team, and while they might be able to get a bit better, I think this is basically a team that needs to fire on all cylinders and catch breaks in order to contend for a return trip to Tampa.

ZooeyModeratorDo you know what I mean about them always seeming to be up for games and playing hard regardless of personnel? I am not sure McVay has that knack with a team yet the way Shanahan does.
Yes, I do. It’s my impression as well. But I don’t watch the 9ers enough to give me confidence to go on a 9ers board and assert that as a truth about the 9ers.
ZooeyModerator49ers may have Sherman back as well. Not telling what he has at this point, but he would be an addition to an already good secondary. The 9ers are among the best against both the rush and the pass, so they can frustrate the Rams (as they have done in the past). This game is no gimme, though it’s hard to imagine the 9ers putting up much offense against the Rams, either.
They had an extra week to prepare and recover, and their backs are against the wall. They have 6 losses right now, and can still tell themselves they have something to play for. A loss to the Rams basically finishes them, as it means their only path to the playoffs comes through other teams collapsing.
This is a talented team with a very good head coach.
I think a win here by the Rams will be underappreciated by the national media, and a loss overblown. The Rams should win this game, but – (I’m not a betting guy and don’t follow the spreads and such) – if I had to put money on this game, I would hate to give up seven points in order to bet on the Rams. I think the final score will be closer than that.
ZooeyModeratorI hope that when Covid leaves us, it takes the phrase “abundance of caution” with it.
ZooeyModeratorHappy Thanksgiving.
ZooeyModeratorThat guy went way too deep on the fake punt.
ZooeyModeratorStumbled upon this site today.

ZooeyModeratorWell…damn.
Humans.
I thought of all people you would appreciate this group.
I did appreciate it. Stuff like that makes me wonder how some humans can do such terrible sociopathic things, and then other humans do THAT. The creativity and effort some people exercise can be impressive.
ZooeyModeratorI just think its who McVay is. I think the media thinks of him as a gunslinger but he’s not. He just seems like a very sound offensive mind, but he’s not like Don Coryell or somethin. Run the ball. Short passes. Lots of quick screens. Focus on execution.
Plus i think he knows Goff’s weaknesses and he is not about to risk strip-sacks.
He’d rather trust the Defense, with Donald, Ramsey and company. At some point, down the road, in the playoffs, in the fourth quarter, on third and long, the game will be in Goff’s hands. We’ll see what happens.
w
vYeah, I think it’s an adjustment. I think he would be happy to throw deep a couple of times a game, but 1) they don’t have a traditional deep threat WR. They’re all footwork guys with precise routes and good hands. 2) the dirtier Goff’s jersey, the less effective he is. He’s not Kurt Warner. So McVay does what works. And this works.
ZooeyModeratorWell…damn.
Humans.
ZooeyModeratorlove watching this defense.
but mcvay has to stay aggressive. i know he trusts the defense. but he can’t keep putting them in bad situations. there was a point where the rams could have put this game away, and they literally almost gave it away.
rams are 5th in total offense but only 17th in scoring. are they just not finishing drives?
Yes, that’s the main area of concern for me, too. Not finishing. I can’t put a finger on it, but they don’t seem as potent offensively as I expected them to be with the healthy, maturing OL.
However, the Rams seem to be improving. And their defense will keep them in games.
ZooeyModeratorHad the upper hand throughout the game.
Didn’t crush them, but were on top the whole time. I will take that.
Good win against a good team, on the road.
ZooeyModeratorOn my drive to the hardware store this morning, a guy on NPR, who is a political expert, was explaining that the problem with young people is that social media for some reason invites political extremism, and that’s why youngsters are in favor of medicare for all.
ZooeyModeratorI like that little clip of Ramsey giving Metcalf an embrace. Metcalf isn’t enthusiastic.
More shellshocked, really.
ZooeyModerator11 fractured ribs.
Good lord.
ZooeyModerator
ZooeyModeratorI am taking the under on this game.
I think this stacks up to be pretty even, and a good, close game, assuming turnovers balance out.
What I don’t like is the Rams’ placekicker, whoever that is this week.
ZooeyModeratorYes! Lake Superior is beautiful! Glad to have more of it for ourselves.
Any way I can interest you in the rest of the states?
ZooeyModeratorSo Skip Bayless’ position is that Brady has turned the ball over a bunch recently, so he’s sick of that, and he will come in to this game resolved to not let that happen this time. Meanwhile, the last time Goff played in Florida, he turned over the ball a lot, so that’s bound to happen again since this game will be played in Florida, too.
I want that guy’s job.
Seriously, these guys just get on TV, and fight each other based on some scripted talking points ahead of time. There is no actual football insight. I hate this crap. (No offense).

ZooeyModeratorTrump has always been the Blanche DuBois of politics.
I did not see that comparison coming.
I read a couple of comments. Trump supporters telling Ed that acting obviously requires no critical thinking skills, and so on, and all basically suggesting that the simple reason Trump is doing this is that he is RIGHT, there was rampant cheating, and he’s fighting to defend America.
ZooeyModerator
ZooeyModeratorI think Edward Norton has it right, actually.
I’m no political pundit but I grew up w a dad who was a federal prosecutor & he taught me a lot & I’ve also sat a fair amount of poker w serious players & l’ll say this: I do not think Trump is trying to ‘make his base happy’ or ‘laying the groundwork for his own network’…
