Myles Garrett was working with Rams OLBs today. Asked Chris Shula if adding a premier 4-3 end changes the way he thinks about the Rams’ defense structurally:June 9, 2026 at 3:50 pm #164419
znModeratorMyles Garrett’s possibilities seem endless
The Rams’ latest splash move is already out on the field and building intrigue as to what he could do here.
Garrett has been with the Rams for one week now following the blockbuster trade that brought him here, which cost the Rams a Pro Bowl edge rusher in Jared Verse as well as a 2027 first-round pick, a 2028 second-round pick and a 2029 third-round pick. He traditionally skips the voluntary portions of the offseason, but he found it was important on a new team to suit up for at least a couple of different practice settings so far.
Garrett participated in individual drills Monday. He sat out team drills — he’s still brand new to the Rams’ scheme — and coach Sean McVay has long taken a precautionary approach this time of year.
Garrett worked with the outside linebackers rather than the defensive line. It’s the same spot Verse played, but it’s a shift from what he has done in his nine-year career. The times he has rushed while standing up have almost exclusively come when lined up over the center on a random blitz.
“We’re still going to have our principles with that stuff, but we’re going to let him do what he does best, and we all know exactly what he does best,” defensive coordinator Chris Shula said. “You’re not going to take Michael Jordan, LeBron (James), all those guys and pull them out of their comfort zone. We’re going to work with him and put him in the best spots that we think for him and the defense to succeed.”
It’s similar to how the Rams have discussed McDuffie. The role he’ll fill most often is at outside cornerback, where the Rams had a major need after the unit fell apart in the playoffs last season. Still, to maximize McDuffie’s value and keep offenses from game-planning against him, Los Angeles plans to move him around between the outside and nickel spots.
McDuffie has played both spots, whereas Garrett has not. There’s no doubt about what Garrett can handle athletically or physically, and the Rams know they need to get creative at times to find playing time and the right matchups for complementary pass rushers such as Kobie Turner, Braden Fiske and Josaiah Stewart.

znModeratorI spent an hour with @Browns GM Andrew Berry on Tuesday, hitting it all on "The Schrager Hour". Here's why Myles Garrett wasn't "shopped around" and why it was really never going to be a highest bidder situation.
A testament to Rams, too. @OmahaProd @ESPNCleveland @ESPNLA710 pic.twitter.com/mdIAHhavIt

wvParticipantAndrew Berry, the Browns Harvard-educated GM sounds like a bright guy.
But then…
wiki
Cleveland Browns (second stint)On January 27, 2020, Berry returned to the Cleveland Browns and was hired to be their general manager and executive vice president of football operations.[4] The move made him the youngest GM in NFL history at the time at age 32.[5]
The largest move of Berry’s tenure as Browns GM came after the 2021 season, during which starting quarterback Baker Mayfield suffered a torn labrum. Berry and the Browns traded for Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson, despite Watson’s ongoing legal issues involving repeated sexual assault allegations. The Browns received Watson and a sixth-round pick, while the Texans received three first-round picks and three fourth-round picks. Watson was then made the highest paid quarterback in league history. The trade is considered by many commentators to be the worst trade in NFL history.[6][7][8][9][10] Berry noted that the rest of the front office was onboard with the decision to make the trade.[11]
On June 5, 2024, the Browns signed Berry to a contract extension.[12] The Browns finished the 2024 season tied for the worst record in the league at 3–14.[13]
After another disappointing 5-12 season in 2025, Andrew Berry worked with the owner of the Cleveland Browns, Jimmy Haslam, to move on from Kevin Stefanski and hire a new head coach in Todd Monken. The hire was made official January 28, 2026, marking a significant change in the direction of the Cleveland Browns organization

Myles Garrett
I did have one last note from the Garrett trade, and that’s what the Rams saw on film of him. I asked a couple different guys in Los Angeles what they saw when they actually sat down and studied him in a way you wouldn’t if you were just getting ready to play against the Browns.
They all, of course, already knew the top-line stuff, what a freakish athlete he was, how his motor ran and how he could beat almost anything an offense threw at him.
What they learned a lot more about while doing the full vetting was just how smart a football player Garrett is. As one Rams evaluator put it, you could see “how football is something of a science to him.” It became apparent to the team, in the evaluation, in breaking down the kitchen-sink list of looks offenses would give him, and how it wasn’t just “I’ll out-athlete everyone” for Garrett. They saw he knew the opponent well and was prepared for anything.
It’s an interesting thing because Garrett has a bit of a different personality and wasn’t necessarily a first-in-the-building/last-out-of-the-building guy in Cleveland.
I don’t think many would consider him a gym rat, necessarily. He has a lot of interests outside of football. But the proof was in the obvious—he always kept himself in ridiculous shape (just look at him) and, again, he was always very ready to play on Sunday.
Which is just another reason why the Rams had the conviction they did to make the move.

znModeratorThe Browns were 3rd in the regular season in defensive 'havoc' – a combination of negative plays caused by a defense.
This was in part due to their defensive leader, Myles Garrett — who will not only help with pass rush but also with his run defense prowess. pic.twitter.com/ixeNAjQnfw

Kevin Garnett reveals a recruiter tried to hand him a bag of cash as a teenager until his grandma pulled out a shotgun“I got offered a lot of cash for my mother and my family to have better opportunities. To meet some of the most powerful people in the world, whatever that meant”
“I had a certain recruiter come see me, and he offered me some cash in front of my grandma. And she went and got a shotgun, and told me to always set the tone with people that you could never be bought”
“If you can be bought once, you can be bought always. And that stuck with me forever… The quicker she put the shotgun together, the quicker we ended the conversation”
“That guy’s still around, I just wink whenever I see him, it’s just between him, myself, God and my grandmother”

wvParticipantDefensive ‘havoc.’ I like it. Not sure how accurate the stats are though, since the Texans are only eighth best. I watched em. They were the havoc-ist defense i saw all year.

znModeratorfrom Mike Tirico: Myles Garrett and Rams’ ‘dangerous defense’ will close out games–https://theramswire.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/rams/2026/06/19/rams-mike-tirico-defense-myles-garrett/90617857007/?taid=6a35ade9fbb36b00014b1847&utm_campaign=trueanthem&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter

Recently, NBC football play-by-play announcer Mike Tirico weighed in on the Rams’ current situation while speaking with ESPN’s Pat McAfee and for the most part, Tirico echoed many of the talking points surrounding the Rams’ offseason. Tirico backed the idea that Garrett’s record-setting production could compound now that he’s with a winning organization, while sharing his general thoughts about a potential return for Aaron Donald.
Tirico also shared an interesting tidbit. Tirico, who works for NBC, used to do Monday Night Football with Jon Gruden. Gruden, the former Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach, is a mentor of Sean McVay. Gruden gave McVay his first NFL job, while Jon’s brother, Jay, and McVay are close. McVay worked under Jay Gruden in the Arena Football League and previously in Washington.
Tirico shared what Gruden used to say.
“If I heard it once, I heard 1000 times from Jon Gruden,” stated Tirico. “Fourth quarter pass rush wins games.”

znModeratorfrom Whitworth doesn’t think it’ll take long for Garrett to realize how special the Rams are as an organization: https://theramswire.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/rams/2026/06/25/rams-myles-garrett-andrew-whitworth-training-camp/90682301007/?taid=6a3d5e974ea26f00017bdbfd&utm_campaign=trueanthem&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter
Former Rams left tackle Andrew Whitworth expects big things from Garrett and believes L.A. will get an “amped-up version” of him after he gets acclimated to his new team. Whitworth expects Garrett to realize how special the Rams are as an organization and the opportunity he has in front of him to finally contend in the playoffs.
“I’ve already kind of caught up with him. He’s used my gym here that a lot of the guys train at, so it’s been great to kind of see him in the fold here and be around him a little bit. I’m excited for him,” Whitworth told Ryan Morik of FOX News. “I think he’ll realize this is a pretty special place to play. It’s a very unique locker room and culture. I consider it a one-of-one type place, and I think, having some conversations with him, he’s already picked up on that and realizes what a special opportunity this is.
“I think you’ll see an even more invigorated, excited, amped-up version of Myles Garrett when he gets in here and realizes how special this place is and the juice it’s going to give him to be a part of something bigger than himself where he’s on a winner, and he’s in a place that’s built to win, and he’ll be one of the reasons they win. So I think it’s going to be fun to watch this guy get after it this fall.”
