2019, imo, is accounted for by broken Gurley and broken OL.

In any event, I hope Stafford is a quick learner. And the OL is good. And Akers stays healthy. And Jackson still has jets. And Fuller makes us forget Johnson. And Donald finally lives up to his full potential.

Name any starting qb you want right now and odds are great that only a couple of exceptions will not have shown signs of having some struggles in year 5.

Kurt Warner. Marc Bulger. I don’t know. I don’t follow other teams.

But we’re not talking about “some struggles.” Everybody has “some struggles.”

I don’t have the ability to stack Goff side-by-side with all the other QBs and parse which bad plays are the fault of the QB for not making the right read, or for just not making an accurate throw, or were the fault of a receiver or a blocker, or just a great play by a defender, or what. What I do know is that there are reports from inside the team that are saying that Goff wasn’t “getting it.” You are taking the line that his growth was completely typical, and the problem is McVay didn’t handle him correctly. I’m taking the line that McVay didn’t handle Goff correctly, and Goff has been slow to improve. That’s from my eyeball test combined with Thiry’s and DaSilva’s reports that many people inside the Rams say so, too. Don’t make me come to Maine and set fire to dog poo on your front porch.

Most 5th year qbs can’t read disguised coverages well. If that weren’t true than the Staley defense would have been a bust all along.

Stafford was not reading disguised defenses well in his 5th year. If through some strange time loop McVay had been coaching a 5th year Stafford, McVay would have made all the same mistakes.

How do you fix a 5th year qb who has trouble with disguised coverages (the way most 5th year qbs do?) You patiently coach him up as experience begins to shift the tide.

That is all on McVay. That is the only way I can read all of this–that’s the only thing that adds up and stands up to scrutiny.

Well, I don’t agree that we can say this is all on McVay.

I agree that McVay screwed it up. No doubt. But I think there have been several 5th year QBs who read defenses well in their 5th years. Well before that, even. I don’t know anything about Stafford, or his development, but…okay.

But that doesn’t mean that Goff isn’t a slow learner. It could be that both things are true. Was Goff making the same misreads time and time again? I don’t have any real idea what Goff was doing wrong, or reading wrong, but…sorry…lots of QBs get it before their 5th year, and if they are not showing progress by then, I don’t know what to say. I mean… Goff regressed according to multiple reports.

In any event, the Rams window to win is right now. 2021 and 2022, maybe. According to McVay, Snead, and a few other people, Stafford gives them a much better shot of doing that.

If he doesn’t… McVay’s next job will be as OC in Detroit.

Well, we gotta hope McVay is a better learner than Goff.

Cuz…really, tearing down a young guy like that constantly, and with increasing intensity, is a mistake. Like a “league source” said, you have to build his confidence, and McVay did the opposite of that.

However, the word is that Goff just couldn’t read some defenses properly, and he should have got better at that. Can’t forget the great McVay in the headset scandal from their early years together. And we can’t forget that Jared Goff is probably the only student at UC Berkeley who could not accurately say where the sun rises and sets. I mean… it could just be that old Goff has a million dollar body and a ten cent head.

In any event, the more I read about Stafford, the more exciteder I get.

Yeah, I pondered threw some names around in my head for a first round guy who exited the NFL faster, and I can’t think of any. All the busts I can think of managed more than one year.

I see he was picked 29th, so he didn’t come into the league with the same level of expectations as, say, Tony Mandarich, but… one and done. That’s prolly not common.

DeSean Jackson burned Troy Hill last year. He ran more than just go routes and was Philly’s go-to receiver in that game. Nine targets, six receptions – 64 yards.

He burned Troy Hill for 64 yards?

Boy, that’s a nightmare game Hill will never forget.

I think Tina Turner and Todd Rundgren are the most significant names on that list.

I don’t know. Seems to me discussions like this usually come down to familiarity/favoritism. For me… not one of those artists would get consideration for my Desert Isle Discs, even if I had a 100 albums to take. And I own some of their albums, and like them well enough. Just not THAT much.

So for me… it’s just like… Turner and Rundgren are the most accomplished. IMO.

I thought he played better than Fowler (whom I was sorry to see go), and the Rams need pressure from the edge. Losing him would have been seriously detrimental, imo.

    I am bummed about Fox.

I am not bummed about Ebukam or Johnson. I just didn’t see any way they could keep Johnson, and I couldn’t care less about Ebukam who was a JAG with the Rams. Pretty much same with Everett.

I’m amazed they kept Floyd, and I’d like to keep Hill, but will accept his loss. I was just hoping that Fox would be under the radar. He was a Value player, imo, and it isn’t the end of the world, but I was hoping he would stay. Carolina got good value at $4/year.

Just so happens I was a-listnin to sports chatter on my drive home today, and Peter King was saying that the release of Hudson raises questions because Hudson is good, and it is one of his top 5 mysteries.

I like what he shows about Stafford.

But then his take on Goff is the usual blinkered stuff. For example he talks about the deep ball being off for the Rams yet while talking about it what he actually shows is clips of protection collapsing.

Last year the Rams were ranked 24th in deep ball completion percentage, and the Lions were ranked 18th. Yeah it’s different.

    I believe Goff can rebound.

I believe Stafford is a 13 year savvy vet who has already rebounded from his 5th and 6th years in the league.

Yep. I share that point of view.

Looks like Stafford is a better QB right now, though, and I understand that the window of opportunity is right now. We are going to have an interesting season ahead of us, that’s for sure, and that makes watching more fun.

I dont remember ‘ever’ hearing a player of Jalen’s caliber
    saying something like
“AD is the Leader, not me.”

    w
    v

Yeah, he said something similar during the playoffs that caught my attention, so this is a mindset for him.

Jalen Ramsey is a top notch dude. Very glad the Rams got that guy.
