znModeratorRams earn 6th seed if…
- Rams win/tie vs. 49ers
It’s pretty simple for the Rams to clinch the No. 6 seed: win or tie against the 49ers. As long as they don’t lose on Sunday, they’ll have the sixth seed. The 49ers could be resting their starters in the finale after clinching the top seed and a first-round bye, so that helps the Rams as they attempt to snap their nine-game regular-season losing streak to San Francisco.
Rams earn 7th seed if…
- Rams lose vs. 49ers AND Packers win vs. Bears
The Packers are the only team that can overtake the Rams for the No. 6 seed, so their game against the Bears is the only other matchup that can affect Los Angeles’ seeding. If the Rams lose and the Packers beat Chicago, Green Bay will be the No. 6 seed based on its head-to-head tiebreaker over Los Angeles.
The Packers and Bears also play at 4:25 p.m. ET, so the Rams won’t know that result before kickoff. As of now, Green Bay is a 3-point home favorite over the Bears.

znModeratorAndrew Siciliano@AndrewSicilianoRams are guaranteed to be the #6 or #7 seed in the NFC. They will play Super Wild Card Weekend on the road at the Lions, Cowboys, or Eagles. **Only way Rams would visit Philadelphia is if LA loses, falls to #7, and Eagles win NFC East.

znModeratorSeattleRams@seattlerams_nflHaving the worst kicking game in the league is only the tip of the iceberg. The Rams have allowed two punt return TD’s, and have had punts blocked this season. The ghost of John Fassel continues to haunt Sean McVay.The LA Rams now have the 6th-lowest special teams DVOA ever. The Rams are at -9.8%. No. 31 Patriots are -3.4%. znModeratorGotta be a bartender somewhere who can kick the bloody ball. Right?
As of today the Dallas kicker is 100% on all attempts. He was a soccer player who then played in the USFL.
From the wiki
After being released from the Bethlehem Steel FC in 2018, Aubrey decided to use the degree that he got at Notre Dame to become a software engineer. While watching an NFL game on TV in 2019, a placekicker missed a field goal and his wife told him: “You could do that.”From 2019 to 2022, Aubrey worked with a former Mississippi State kicker and kicking coach Brian Egan three times a week. Aubrey was drafted as a placekicker by the Birmingham Stallions in the 2022 USFL draft and made his debut as a professional American football player on April 16, 2022. The Stallions terminated Aubrey’s contract on July 3, 2023, allowing him to sign with the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League on July 6.
…
In the next game against the Philadelphia Eagles, he set an NFL record for most consecutive field goals made to start a career with his 19th made attempt, beating the previous holder Travis Coons. During Week 14 against the Eagles, Aubrey became the first kicker in NFL history to make two field goals from 59+ yards in the same game (59, 60).
I pointed out the problem with Rams special teams personnel acquisition in another thread. Personnel scouting for Rams special teams is handled by coaches. Coaches can’t scout. For other positions they have dedicated “mini-GMs” who specialize in pro personnel scouting by position. They don’t do that for special teams.

Sean McVay not signing Mason Crosby knowing he’d miss an eventual game-winning field goal a month later…Chess not checkers!
The Rams:
– Lost the turnover battle
– Gave up a Punt Return TD
– Left 5+ points off the board
– Only converted two 3rd downs…and still found a way to win.

December 31, 2023 at 4:16 pm in reply to: praise for Stafford after TNF (definitive article posted 1/9) #148096
znModeratorThe marriage of McVay and Stafford is so effective. I dont think it can ever by over-stated just how great it must be for McVay to have a veteran with as much mental-power and experience as Matthew Stafford. Now that Brady has retired, who is the top QB-brain active on the grid-iron? If it aint Stafford, I dunno who it would be. w v
I am stunned by how good Matthew Stafford is. More so this season than the SB season. He was good that year, but good lord almighty. That “No Look” throw in the Super Bowl was Something Else. It was not just a “cool throw.” There is a good chance that that pass would not have been completed, if it weren’t for the fact that it was a No Look pass. That LB was right there. He was smack in the sweet spot of that passing lane. And Stafford’s “misdirection gaze” made that dude lean slightly to his left, and by the time he saw where the ball was going, he just couldn’t quite reverse his momentum enough to get his fingertips on that pass, and that was a HUGE play. But now it seems like I see that freakshit from Stafford every single fucking game. The stakes aren’t as high, so maybe if we are judging passes like a Diving judge, and taking context into account, the Super Bowl pass was the highwater mark. But this year, it’s like he is making those throws without anybody paying much attention to it. He is doing it all the time. Roll to the left, throw cross-body to the right, splitting the legs of a LB, and darting the ball between 2 guys in the secondary who stretch out within 6 inches of the ball, right into the hands of some goddamn receiver nobody heard of before this year. With broken bones and probably a collapsed lung. It’s ridiculous. I am beginning to realize that I am deeply in love with Matthew Stafford. I’m going to say it right now: I think he’s better than Pat Haden was.

Lions ‘confused’ as refs negate late 2-point try in Cowboys win
https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/39213838/cowboys-hang-penalty-nixes-lions-2-point-conversion
ARLINGTON, Texas — Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell was visibly frustrated after a controversial penalty negated what would have been a go-ahead 2-point conversion late in Saturday night’s loss to the Dallas Cowboys.Officials flagged Lions offensive lineman Taylor Decker after he caught a pass that appeared to be the potential winner with 23 seconds left. However, Decker was called for an illegal touching penalty for not reporting as eligible.
The Cowboys ultimately denied the Lions’ 2-point try and won 20-19.
“Would you be frustrated right now?” Campbell said afterward. “I don’t like losing, and that’s what happened. We lost, and that bothers me. I don’t like having an L, so that’s the frustration.”
The Lions and the refs gave contradictory accounts afterward, with quarterback Jared Goff saying definitively that Decker, the Lions’ starting left tackle, reported as an eligible receiver and that Dan Skipper, a backup offensive tackle, did not. Skipper also said afterward that he did not report to an official.
However, in a pool report, referee Brad Allen said the opposite, that Skipper reported to him as eligible and Decker did not.
“Therefore, he is an ineligible touching a pass that goes beyond the line, which makes it a foul,” Allen said of Decker in the pool report. “So, the issue is, number 70 did report, number 68 did not.”
Video showed Decker having a conversation with Allen, who then said something to the Cowboys’ defense.
“That conversation is where [Skipper] reports to me, and I then go to the defensive team, and I say to them, ‘[Skipper] has reported as an eligible receiver,’ so they will be aware of who has reported,” Allen said in the pool report.
Inside the Lions’ locker room after the loss, Decker and Skipper declined to speak in depth about the penalty. Instead, Decker said he did “exactly what Coach told me to do.” Skipper said he had “very few words that aren’t going to get me fined.”
With 1:41 remaining on Detroit’s final drive and the Lions trailing 20-13, Campbell told his players that they were going for the win and would continue to be aggressive.
Receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown caught an 11-yard touchdown from Goff with 23 seconds remaining that brought Detroit to within 20-19. But the Lions failed on three 2-point conversion attempts. The first two attempts were called back by penalties, one against the Lions and one against the Cowboys, and the final play was an incomplete pass to tight end James Mitchell.
Goff said he was “pretty confused” by the flag on Decker.
“Yeah, that sucks. It’s unfortunate, man,” Goff said. “I don’t know if I’ve had this feeling before where you feel like you’ve won, and you didn’t. With that being said though, the next two plays we had shots at it.”
