They can restructure Quinn at any time. Do you really mean Donald? Givens and Pead is probably as far as I would go. Remember, I am not a big fan of paying a premium for any of the offensive free agents out there. Well, maybe Barksdale. But, I think with a Quinn restructure and cutting Pead and Givens it is enough to get through 2016. That gives the ~10/11 million for 2016 and it gives them 11 million(the space they have now) to try to sign ?2/3 free agent offensive linemen.

That’s true with Quinn isn’t it…meaning, even if he already collected the roster bonus, they can still re-structure it.

Naw I was kidding on Donald. Just making everyone’s day a little more surreal.

But I am talking about space now. In 2015. The Quinn thing, Pead, Givens. Am I misunderstanding you?

JT said in the radio interview that Bradford was willing to take a pay cut and they were working on that up until the combine when they found out he was being shopped by the Rams. That’s when talks broke down. Bradford wanted to remain a Ram and was willing to take a pay cut but the Rams low-balled him first and then started shopping him. Bradford decided not to take the paycut because it would just facilitate a trade.

This is very different from what we have been hearing.

Wagoner has the same cap figure as JT, around 11 million. Ironically, that is around the same amount of cap space that we gained by trading Bradford for Foles.

You mentioned turning the Quinn roster bonus into a signing bonus. What is the deadline for that?

And there are some potential cuts too I think. Givens, Pead, Donald s …who else?

You know, ideally…this could be one of those trades that works out well for both sides.

Foles is more of an improviser and IMO that didn’t fit Kelly but it fits with Fisher.

Bradford is more of a learn it and implement it guy, and that fits well with Kelly.

Rookie game 5 @ Tampa Bay

    15:00 of the 1st, 0-0, at the Eagle 20.

1st and 10: Designed roll right with Celek mirroring Foles short while Foles looks downfield.
Reid likes this play for Foles. He ends up throwing very short to Celek for 1.
2nd and 9: Short pass left to Johnson for 6. Fighting pressure well to get it off.
3rd and 3: Had time initially but didn’t throw, Gerald McCoy in for the sack, loss of 10.
    Punt

    11:11 of the 1st, 0-0, at the Eagle 31.

    1st and 10: Brown run loses 4
2nd and 14: Brown run no gain
3rd and 14: Incomplete pass to a covered Maclin.
    Punt

    7:49 of the 1st, 0-0, at the Eagle 14.

1st and 10: Foles complete on a curl left to Cooper at the marker
1st and 10: Looked like the same exact play, this time Cooper fell down, incomplete.
2nd and 10: Bryce Brown run left for 1
3rd and 9: TB rushes 4, covers with 7. Immediate pressure from the LE, Foles shrugs him off,
but the next two guys are there to drag him down for a loss.
    Punt

    3:30 of the 1st, 0-0, from the Eagle 20

1st and 10: Brown run left for 1
2nd and 9: WR screen to Maclin for 4.
3rd and 5: Foles escapes collapsing pocket left and hits Riley Cooper for 16.
1st and 10: Brown run left for no gain. So far Eagle running game helpless.
2nd and 10: Foles play action, then overthrows an open McNutt deep by 10 yards.
    Otherwise he had a touchdown.

3rd and 10: Drifts right and back out of the pocket and hits Avant for 5.
    Long throw, short gain.
    Punt

    13:31 of the 2nd, 0-0, at the Eagle 23.

1st and 10: Brown run loses a yard
2nd and 11: Foles turns to fake and an untouched rusher up the middle sacks him. No chance.
3rd and 17: Foles short middle pass to Maclin who gets 15, not enough.
    Punt

    10:02 of the 2nd, 0-0, at the TB 43.
It’s been a defensive struggle, but PH has their first good field position.

1st and 10: Foles drops and throws through a tight window for 11 yards.
1st and 10: Poor throw short left to Maclin at his feet, incomplete.
2nd and 10: Brown run left loses 7.
3rd and 17: TB brings the house on a blitz, Foles gets it off for 20 to Avant.
Pass was high but Avant leapt and made a spectacular one handed grab. Credit Avant.

1st and 10: Brown run left for 11.
1st and G: Brown loses two on a run to the middle.
2nd and G: Foles rushed hard as the RT is beaten early, throws it away.
3rd and G: Immediate pressure up the middle, all Foles can do is throw it away quickly.
    FG

4:34 of the 2nd, PH 3-0, at the Eagle 20.

1st and 10: Slant left to Cooper complete for 6
2nd and 4: Sideline completion to Cooper for 7.
1st and 10: Foles half-pump and then throw short right to Johnson, who runs for a gain of 14.
1st and 10: Swing pass left to Brown for 2.
2nd and 8: Delay run Brown for 4.
3rd and 4: Foles in the shotgun, both Tackles beaten immediately,
Foles steps up through ankle tackles and fires downfield to Cooper at the TB 10. Big play.

1st and G from the 10: Foles drops deep, looks left, sees lots of green to the right,
and runs it in to the right pylon for a TD. Just enough speed that no one could get to him.

0:28 of the 2nd, PH 10-0, at the Eagle 26.

1st and 10: Foles drifts right, hits Lewis out of the backfield, gets a block from
Maclin and gains good yardage down the right sideline before going OOB.
1st and 10: Deep shot to Cooper at the TB 5 is overthrown.
2nd and 10: Foles hits TE Clay Harbour for 11 and a 1st down.
1st and 10, 4 seconds left: Long FG no good off the upright.

    Half

TB stopped on opening drive of the 2nd, punt return muffed, TB recovers at the 5. Easy TD drive.

    11:27 of the 3rd, 10-7, at the Eagle 40

1st and 10: Foles sees nothing, holds the ball and gets sacked.
2nd and 18: Screen right to Avant for 10
3rd and 8: Foles drops, sees open territory to the left, runs past
the 1st down marker and wisely slides before defenders can hit him.

1st and 10: Again, early pressure from the edges, Foles steps up and hits Avant for 20.
1st and 10: Brown runs right for a loss of 1
2nd and 11: Pressure, Foles rolls right out of pocket and throws it away.
3rd and 11: Middle pass to TE Harbour for 9.

5:37 of the 3rd, PH 10-7, at the Eagle 20.

1st and 10: Foles to TE Harbour across the middle for 7
2nd and 3: Foles to Brown across the middle for 4.
1st and 10: Short pass to Maclin caught and dropped before he moves. Incomplete.
2nd and 10: Foles drops, the pocket splits in front of him, so he starts to run,
but only gets back to the LOS.
3rd and 10: Foles gets pressure, shakes off a tackler, throws off-balance
to Avant, but a hurtling defender knocks it OOB at the last second.
    Punt

    TB TD drive.

14:19 of the 4th, TB 14-10, at the Eagle 22.

1st and 10: Foles passes mid-range left to Avant, too high OOB, incomplete.
    2nd and 10: Brown run for 2.
3rd and 8: Foles’ pass knocked away from Maclin.
    Punt

    TB another TD drive.

7:15 of the 4th, TB 21-10, at the Eagle 28. Clutch time, indeed.

1st and 10: Short quick screen right to Maclin, gets a block and 25 yards down the sideline.
1st and 10: Short middle pass to Harbour for 4.
    2nd and 4: Lewis run loses 6.
3rd and 10: Foles finally gets a little time, hits Maclin left sideline for 17.
1st and 10: Quick throw to Avant down the middle for 13. Foles in rythym now.
1st and 10: Foles rolls right, targets covered, throws it out the back of the end zone.
2nd and 10: Pass left for Maclin gets 3.
3rd and 7: Foles to Clay Harbour for the TD. This is one of Foles’ signature moves.
Steps up from pressure, runs towards the LOS, makes the throw JUST short of the LOS on the run
    Most impressive. Loving this.

Going for 2: Foles looks left, crowded endzone, turns right, but getting tackled.
Manages to make the throw under duress but it’s at the feet of an open receiver left, no good.

2:44 of the 4th, TB 21-16, from the Eagle 36, a FG would be no help.

1st and 10: Screen right to Maclin in a crowd, gain of 3.
2nd and 7: Ankle tackle/sack as Foles looks downfield.
3rd and 14: All kinds of pressure immediately, Foles steps up and out of it,
man coming at his back, gets it off to Maclin for 24!

1st and 10: Foles quick throw to McNutt as he’s being held, defensive holding on TB
1st and 10: Foles throws to the end zone too deep for Cooper. He was wide open.
2nd and 10: Foles 20 yards to the middle of the field with no Eagle anywhere near it.
3rd and 10: Screen left to Maclin for 9.
4th and 1: Eagles don’t even try the run. Foles in the shotgun, sees and opening
and takes off for a gain of 3 and a 1st down. NOT a designed QB draw.

1st and 10: No timeouts, Foles spikes with 35 seconds left. Lol, Bucs with 12 men, penalty.
1st and 5 from the TB 23: Foles incomplete hard and short to Cooper.
2nd and 5: Protection for Foles but he can’t find a receiver, throws it out of the endzone.
3rd and 5: Foles throws a strike to a diving Avant at the TB 1.
1st and G: Eagles rush forward and spike the ball with 2 seconds left.
2nd and G: Foles designed roll right fires it quick and hard to a crouching Maclin
sliding on his knees at the right side of the endzone. TD! Game over. Clutch, clutch, clutch.

You have to know one thing about this game. All day long the TB defensive front bullied
the Eagle oline, run or pass. There was no running game at all, runs often lost yardage, and Foles
was almost always under early pressure. To come back under those circumstances, down 11
with 7:15 to go was a real accomplishment. For the rookie Foles, it was huge, his first win.

Stats don’t matter here, this impressed me far more than the last game, and he was good in that one.

    2012 rookie game 4 @ Dallas

Foles still looking for a victory as a starter.

    15:00 of the 1st 0-0 at the Eagle 20

1st and 10: Whacked by Ware who never had to slow down on an overload from the left,
but Foles gets the incompletion throw, just barely.
2nd and 10: Bryce Brown run to the right loses 2
3rd and 12: 15 yard slant to Riley Cooper, led perfectly and on time.
1st and 10: Looking for Cooper about 10 yards over the middle but he’s covered, incomplete.
2nd and 10: 1 yard run by Brown
3rd and 9: Scans and finds Celek sitting open about 7 yards downfield, Celek drags Cowboys
    to the marker.
1st and 10: Brown run off tackle for 5
2nd and 5: Brown run wide left loses 6! Eagle running game not going.
3rd and 11: Foles drops with plenty of protection, can’t find anyone open downfield,
drops it off to Brown with a low throw, and Brown stopped on a 9 yard gain.
    Punt

    8:13 of the 1st, 0-0, at the Eagle 29

1st and 10: Brown with an energetic run for 15
    1st and 10: Brown run for 3
2nd and 7: Foles short pass to Celek with room to run down to the Dallas 23
1st and 10: Foles quick short pass to Johnson for 13.
1st and 10: Brown runs left untouched for the TD. Good drive.

13:28 of the 2nd, PH 7-3, at the Eagle 15.

1st and 10: Foles delivers a brilliant throw to Celek right on the money just the
pressure hits him. Stood in there like a champ and got 20 yards.

1st and 10: Good play fake, but then throws it away OOB, nobody open.
2nd and 10: Brown run left loses 1
3rd and 11: Incomplete short right to Brown is dropped.
    Punt

9:54 of the 2nd, Ph 7-3, at the Eagle 27.

1st and 10: Dumpoff to the back under pressure loses 3.

    1st and 10: Lewis run for 3
    2nd and 7: Run for 1
3rd and 6: Foles drops, quickly finds Maclin wide open on a slant to the DA 13.
Must mention how impressed I have been by Maclin while watching these games.

1st and 10: Good play action, has Celek open to the left for 7. Foles executing,
but gotta give some credit to play design, he has had some open receivers.

2nd and 3: Brown for 8 up the middle untouched and a TD. Evan Mathis blocking.

    Dallas TD drive.

    0:35 of the 2nd, 14-10, from the Eagle 16.

1st and 10: Brown big run to the DA 37.
1st and 10: Foles throws deep to a receiver(?) breaking open down the right hash,
too far, incomplete. Chance for a huge strike left dangling.
2nd and 10: Sweet arc on a perfect throw down to DA 35. Momentum took WR OOB.
    1st and 10: Brown run for 3
2nd and 7: Brown run for 6 setting up FG.
    FG ends half.

Dallas TD to open the 2nd half

11:18 of the 3rd, 17 all, at the Eagle 20.

1st and 10: Short pass under pressure to the TE for 2.
2nd and 8: Strike along the left sideline to Maclin, very nice throw for 15.
    1st and 10: Run for 5
2nd and 5: Foles hits Celek for 3.
    3rd and 2: Brown run for 2
    1st and 10: Brown run for 3
2nd and 7: Brown big run up the middle to the Dallas 33.
1st and 10: Brown run left for 10
1st and 10: Throws in rythym left for TE, but he had slipped, incomplete.
2nd and 10: Shovel pass to Brown for 7, once again nifty handling by Foles.
3rd and 3: As good a TD throw as you will ever see to Riley Cooper, perfect placement
right over the DB’s shoulder as his head was turned and right into Cooper’s hands.
I can’t praise this throw enough, recognition, timing, and accuracy were simply beautiful.
I may have just become a Foles fan right this very minute.

Dallas answers with another TD. Foles can’t play defense, shrug.

    13:35 of the 4th, 24-24, at the Eagle 22.

1st and 10: Foles short right to Avant for 8.
2nd and 2: Bryce Brown hard 1st down run for about 7.
1st and 10: Incomplete too far in front of receiver on a 20 yard square in.
2nd and 10: Brown 1st down run again.
1st and 10: Foles pass batted down by leaping LB.
2nd and 10: Foles nice pass over the middle to Avant to the DA 31.
1st and 10: Pressure, Foles rolls right and throws it wisely OOB
2nd and 10: Designed roll right pass to TE for 7 after looking downfield.
3rd and 10: Overthrows receiver in left side of endzone, double-covered. Foles tried
to put it where only he could catch it but a bit too high.
FG. Did I mention that Henery is a machine?

Another Dallas TD drive. This is a scorefest.

5:35 of the 4th, Dallas 31-27, at the Eagle 20. Clutch time.

    1st and 10: Brown run for 2.
2nd and 8: Foles designed roll right, throws downfield OOB.
3rd and 8: Foles under pressure, sidesteps rusher deftly, drifts left and throws
another strike to ? downfield for a gain of 19. Clutch, clutch play.

1st and 10: Short pass left right at the sideline for 3
2nd and 7: Hero/goat Bryce Brown after an excellent game, puts on the turf for
a Dallas scoop and score. Note: Foles gives chase but is not as fast as Claiborne. heh.

3:50 of the 4th, Dallas 38-27, at the Eagle 20.

1st and 10: Foles drops, doesn’t see Dallas safety and throws it right to him. He drops it.
    2nd and 10: Brown with a 13 yard run.
1st and 10: With pocket collapsing, Foles throws behind Brown. Roughing the passer called.
1st and 10: Dumpoff to Brown for 2.
2nd and 8: Blindside sack/strip recovered by Philly. Foles immediately brings his throwing arm to his
    chest and grabs it.
3rd and 19: Handoff to Brown for 1.
4th and 18: Foles counts Demarcus Ware offsides.
4th and 13: Foles throws short of the 1st down to Celek. Turnover on downs.

Dallas can’t run it out. Punt to Johnson returned for a TD.

Philly goes for 2. Foles rolls right and throws high and outside to his receiver. no good.
Onside kick recovered by Dallas. That’s it.

Well, this was easily the best game of Foles career to this point. The Eagles went toe to toe with
Dallas in a hostile environment and had equal or the better of it until Brown’s fatal fumble.

Foles did everything that could reasonably asked of him and looked very, very good. If you watched this rookie play this game you might think he’s got a future in this league!

i like the threesome of: cap-room, draft-choices, and Foley

if Foley does well he’ll be making Bradford type money next year

    Foley?

Are you intentionally misrepresenting Foles’s name in an deliberate effort to discredit him?

    Meanwhile…

…actually Bradford never made 2nd contract for a qb money. If Bradford plays well, he will get a contract too, and it won’t be for as little as the Eagles are paying him this year.

Though in SB’s case, there will be more incentives n stuff, you would think.

what cap usage can actually be ascribed to this trade.

Depends on what you mean by that. They gained 13 M. Actually more like 11+ M because they also took on Foles’s cap hit. Is it possible to figure out which specific players they got or will get with that money? I doubt that’s possible. But in the end, when you tally it all up, they will have had 11 M more in cap space than if he had stayed. Is that decisive? I doubt it. Because along with taking on Foles’s 1+ M contract, they also took on his upcoming free agency. Right now starting qbs up for their 2nd contract get around 19 M. So either they don’t like Foles or that, more or less, is what they will have to pay to keep him.

I’m fine with it. I think they broke even. Foles + picks = an equal swap for Bradford.

I don’t get the “dumb to trade Bettis away” feeling with this one.

Bradford is the better qb and I had more confidence he could play than most do (I saw the knees as freak accidents, but then I have had a few hyperextended knees, so I think I get how that works.)

But it’s an even swap, or it is on paper anyway, and as a result, both teams get the situation they want.

    So no complaints for now.

Who knows what time will bring. If I recall, at the time, in 2012, the Washington trade did not look so outrageous. Time changed that perception.

PFF rates Fairly as “good” overall, whatever that means.

Because the Rams think he can be more than that, and they think they are just the guys to bring it out of him.

They were right about Britt, so, they could be right about Fairley.

In terms of the OL…they still have some free agency moves left and there’s a draft coming and they may also think they have a guy on the roster already. So the OL has plenty of time to pull together.

    What Orlando ISN’T is observant.

    They did send him deep.

    Bradford threw to him deep.

    Hill didn’t.

    Shrug.

He also wants Austin to be Hakim. Well. Hakim could do that stuff. So far Tavon can’t. As long as we’re wishing guys into a different existence, let’s say Givens can be Jerry Rice.

First, there is a lot of heavy scrutiny on Foles right now, but the accounts I most agree with see a lot of his issues as coachable. Not just that they are correctable things, but it also depends on how you set him up in the offense and how they use him.

Second, either way, next year’s qb draft class is far better than this one. If they want another guy, this is the way to do it, IMO.

Third, FA qbs? Here’s a list (as always, if a guy isn’t re-signed and is available, it’s because there’s a problem):

    Eli Manning
    Philip Rivers
    Cam Newton
    Sam Bradford
    Andrew Luck
    Robert Griffin III
    Matt Cassel

    Nick Foles – Film Review

I spent some time today going back and watching every pass Foles threw in 2014. Planning to go back through 2013 when I have the chance as well. Here are my general observations:

Foles doesn’t have Bradford’s arm strength. He doesn’t get the same amount of velocity on the passes outside the hashes(they can hang a bit at times). His arm is middle of the pack but it’s definitely adequate. It won’t hinder our offense. We just won’t have the deep out, deep comeback, and throws like that be as much a part of the offense with Foles as they were with Bradford.

Foles needs to be more consistent with his timing on routes. Shows great anticipation at times and at other times, he holds the ball too long and forces passes late.

Foles’s decision making needs work. He’s definitely got a gunslinger mentality out there. There are too many plays where he should just live to play another day but tries to make something out of nothing. It works on occasion but he also risks a lot of turnovers doing it. Honestly, if he continues to struggle with it and I were Weinke, I might have him at the start of every practice do a drill where he rolls out and throws the ball away just to prove a point. Because he needs to play smarter.

Foles needs to do a better job with his post-snap reads and coming off his first progression. Made some dangerous throws when he tried to force it to his first progression based on what he read pre-snap.

Foles’s feet should be the Rams’ #1 priority in developing his game. I don’t think he was a good fit for the Eagles system simply because of how often they had him play-action it out of the gun and then try to transition into a quick pass. And Foles just was not good at resetting his feet quickly after the play-action fake which led to a lot of inaccurate throws. He definitely seemed a lot more comfortable under center. His drops, while methodical, allowed him to be a lot more controlled with his feet. The Rams coaching staff really needs to stress setting and resetting his feet as well as driving the ball with authority. He just is very inconsistent with his lower half and it adversely affects his accuracy.

His deep accuracy is definitely scatter-shot. Some of it is related to the previous issues with his feet but that’s certainly not all of it. He made some beautiful throws including dropping a ball into the bucket from 60+ yards away to Maclin against Arizona(the play linked here: http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-cant-miss-plays/0ap3000000418116/Wk-8-Can-t-Miss-Play-Magical-Maclin ). However, he also overthrew open WRs and TEs quite a bit on deeper throws. It’s an area where he needs to really improve because you can’t squander opportunities like that in the NFL.

Foles needs to show better composure under pressure. The Eagles OL was Rams OL bad in some games this year. They just were a sieve. But Foles needs to do a better job of hanging in the pocket and creating space within the pocket. He flashes that ability but I swear the guy thinks he’s Michael Vick with how often he tries to scramble towards the sidelines to buy time. He’s not athletic enough to outrun most DEs in this league but certainly tries to. The Rams really need to fix the interior and get it to a point that Foles is comfortable with it so he’ll step up in the pocket rather than looking to scramble.

I have a feeling some might be concerned that Foles will be hesitant to test tight windows coming out of Kelly’s offense…don’t be. He showed no fear when it came to putting the ball into very tight spaces and generally did an effective job of it…especially when he was sound in the lower half.

Foles is surprisingly hard to sack. He’s a big guy and while he looks skinny(especially in the arms), he’s surprisingly strong and difficult to get off his feet. He broke quite a few tackles in 2014 and extended plays by refusing to go down. Although, he also coughed up the ball on a few plays when he did that. He was also able to throw out of some sacks due to his ability to stay on his feet with guys holding onto him.

Definitely not afraid to take off and run for yardage if there’s a lane. That was an issue that I had with Sam. He’d have a running lane to an easy first down and he’d refuse to take it. Foles will definitely take off if there’s a lane there. But he’ll also keep his eyes up until he passes the LOS the majority of the time in case something comes open.

    Verdict

My personal opinion is that Foles is much better suited for an offense like ours than Chip Kelly’s. As I stated above, he seemed a lot more comfortable under center than he did in the gun…especially when it came to play-action fakes. I think our quick passing offense will be something that he’s more comfortable with as he seemed at his best when the Eagles let him get into a rhythm with quick passes although he’s not a guy to shy away from deep shots. I also think that our coaching staff will give him a bit more freedom than Kelly did. But that’s just an assumption I’m making. It seemed like Kelly might have been a bit too controlling with their offense. I think Foles would do better with more pre-snap responsibility and freedom.

Foles is tough, competitive, and is definitely capable of making some wow plays. Those of you hoping for an Alex Smith like game manager are going to have to adjust your expectations because that just isn’t how Foles plays the game. But those of you who wanted more aggressiveness and risk taking out of our QB position when compared to Bradford will likely be happy in that regard.

How good do I think he can be for us? Realistically, I think he’ll offer us 2012/2013 Andy Dalton level play. Some of you might be unhappy to hear that but I think that’s about the level he’s at right now. He certainly has potential to improve and be more than that, though. But he has to clean up some glaring issues in his game. Ultimately, though, I think that level of play is more than enough for us to win with. And keep in mind that Foles doesn’t have Dalton’s biggest issue…the tendency to fall apart in high pressure moments and games.

Brady’s got more zip on his throws. Foles can get it down the field but those sideline throws in the intermediate and deep range aren’t easy for him. Just doesn’t have the same sort of natural arm strength that Sam had. Then again, Brady didn’t use to either. He perfected his mechanics and really dedicated himself to building his core and lower body strength. Both those things would help Foles out. He’s not weak armed but he’s not strong armed either. Ultimately, it doesn’t make that much of a difference when he’s getting the ball out on time but there were a few plays last year that he got picked off on because he was late with it and didn’t have the arm to compensate.

I think a guy like Tavon would probably work for Foles as a deep threat because Foles really isn’t much of a 50/50 guy on his deep balls. He has a tendency to try to put it out in front of his guy which leads to some overthrows. But for a guy like Tavon that can run under it, I can certainly see it being an effective combination. But Tavon’s gotta do some improving this off-season. I think that’ll be on Tavon. If Tavon improves his route running and understanding of the offense, I don’t see why not. The only mild concern I have is that Foles had some issues with missing wide open drag routes(i.e. not seeing the WR or pulling the trigger too late). Which is something that should be Austin’s bread and butter here. Hopefully, he’ll do a better job of spotting it with the Rams.

8:23 of the 2nd, Carolina up 14-12, at the Eagle 39.

1st and 10: Brown run 11 yards on a tricky delay that looked for all the world like play action.
Foles shows deceptive ball skills repeatedly.

    2nd and 5: A run for 4
    3rd and 1: Brown 5 yard run.
1st and 10: Lewis runs left for 11. Again the handoff is deceptive. I like it.
    1st and 10: Lewis run for 2
2nd and 8: Screen to Brown well defended, loss of 2.
3rd and 10: Foles looking downfield, gets pressure, steps up in the pocket,

9:08 of the 3rd, Carolina 21-15, from the Eagle 29

1st and 10: Short pass for 5 to Brown.
2nd and 5: Direct snap to Brown for run of 6.
    1st and 10: Run for 2
2nd and 8: Foles hard counts Carolina offsides, but play is successful to

1:24 of the 3rd, Philly 22-21, at the Eagle 41.

1st and 10: Bryce Brown hero/goat fumbles again, Carolina recovers

12:33 of the 4th, Carolina 24-22, at the Eagle 15.

1st and 10: Foles short left to Maclin for 7
    2nd and 3: Lewis runs 5
1st and 10: The direct snap to Brown loses 1. Carolina not fooled.
2nd and 11: Draw to Brown for 5
3rd and 6: Shovel pass for 5.8 yards
4th and inches: Brown gets stuffed.

Carolina scores TD, EP wide right, it’s 30-22. Boykin with a terrific KO return then fumbles.
I almost felt sorry for Eagle fans, but naahhhh. Panthers run out the clock.

Reid obviously decided to take some pressure off rookie Foles by concentrating more on the run.
Early defensive breakdowns and fumbles ruined that plan.

Foles did ok in a conservative plan. His effort was good enough to win.

2012 rookie game 2 @ Washington. Eagles have oline problems. Starting RG for this game
is a street FA signed that week, starting RT is a rookie. Some other line shuffling.
    They will pay for it.

Opening drive of the game, 0-0, at the Eagle 21

1st and 10: Fake handoff, 270 spin, rolls right and has to throw it away OOB
with heavy pressure in his face.
    2nd and 10: McCoy for 2
3rd and 8: Drops back into the pocket, pocket collapses, but Foles runs out
through a gap between the RG and RT, throws on the run to Celek. Celek is covered,
but the ball is placed out in front of him where he can make a play. London Fletcher! stretches his arm in front of
Celek, bats the ball, it caroms upward off Celek’s hands and is intercepted. IMO, great defensive play
    just rotten luck for Foles.

13:02 of the 1st, skins 7-0, from the Eagle 23.

1st and 10: 6 yard pass complete to Celek across the middle.
    2nd and 4: D offsides
    1st and 10: False start
    1st and 15: Graham runs for 5.
2nd and 10: Quick pass right to Desean Jackson for 8.
3rd and 2: Hits the fullback on a swing left after looking downfield. Nice gain, 1st down.
1st and 10: Shovel pass to McCoy for 3
2nd and 7: Short pass right to TE for loss of 1. Well covered. This is Haslett’s defense?
3rd and 8: Hits Cooper short right who gets a block and makes plenty out of it to the WA 29.
1st and 10: Under early and heavy pressure, Foles backpedals and keeps his eyes scanning.
Falling backward, he finds Bryce Brown wide open underneath for a 1st down. Holding on the offense
cancels a good play by Foles.

    1st and 20: False start
1st and 25: Delay to McCoy for 4
2nd and 21: Shotgun screen, dline bats down flat pass to the RB.
3rd and 21: Pressure up the middle as Foles drops back, throws deep downfield into coverage.
Intercepted by Merriweather as the receiver falls down. That was a prayer and the answer was no.

4:16 of the 1st, skins 7-0, from the Eagle 16.

    1st and 10: McCoy for 2.
2nd and 8: Throw short left too far out in front of an open receiver. Bad pass.
3rd and 8: Drops back, has time nobody open, pocket breaks down but Foles finds an opening
to run, just short of the LOS unleashes a pass on the run to Cooper to the Eagle 40. Excellent poise, control, and awareness.

1st and 10: Gets a little time, throws in rythym to the TE left for a 1st, but a hard hit after the catch and he drops it. Called incomplete. Good throw by Foles.
    2nd and 10: O holding on a run play.
2nd and 20: Screen right to McCoy, nice placement by Foles and a 1st down.
1st and 10: Brown runs left for loss of 1.
2nd and 11: Another excellent screen right to McCoy for big yardage.
    1st and 10: Run for 5.
2nd and 5: WR screen right loses 3.
3rd and 8: Deep drop, good protection, throws far beyond WR along right sideline.
Looks like the QB and WR not on the same page.
    FG

Redskins score TD on a deep pass by Griffin. This is RGIII’s rookie season and he looks awesome.

10:29 of the 2nd, skins 14-3, from the Eagle 31

    1st and 10: Brown run for 11
    1st and 10: McCoy run for 9
2nd and 1: Big run by Brown, holding by the O after the 1st down, ball at the skin 45.
1st and 10: Play action left, Foles rolls right, throws too far in front of open receiver.
Foles is good with PA fakes, puts the ball deep into the RB’s gut before pulling it back.
I used to hate the perfunctory motion that Bulger used that fooled absolutely no one.

    2nd and 10: McCoy run for 3
3rd and 7: Foles can’t find anyone open, gets hit hard by a delayed blitz, laterals? back
to the fullback behind him, who is dropped for an even bigger loss. Foles shows impressive
strength again, but doh! on the play.

5:26 of the 2nd, skins 14-3, on the Eagle 36

1st and 10: Low and outside to Cooper, incomplete.
2nd and 10: Late middle screen swallowed up by Redskins, loss of 7
3rd and 17: Foles with an absolute dart to Johnson for a 1st down, great throw!
    1st and 10: Brown run for 4
    2nd and 6: McCoy dancing for 1
3rd and 5: Low and away again to the TE right.

    0:36 of the 2nd, 14-3, on the Eagle 11.

1st and 10: Draw to McCoy, fumbles, Redskins recover. Handoff was ok, fumble came later.

Redskin FG ends the 1st half

12:32 of the 3rd, 17-3 skins, good field position at the WA 45.

1st and 10: Deep right sideline strike to receiver, caught but too far outside to get both feet in. Good recognition, depth dead on, but just OOB.
    2nd and 10: McCoy run for 5.
3rd and 5: Beautiful throw down the middle to Celek to the WA 19. Perfect.
    1st and 10: McCoy run loses 6.
2nd and 16: Foles dumpoff over the middle to McCoy for 12, handled pressure well.
3rd and 4: Delay of game on the QB
3rd and 9: Foles drops back, stripped from behind, McCoy recovers.

FG 17-6. Then Skins TD, now lead 24-6.

4:43 of the 3rd at the Eagle 26

1st and 10: 1st receiver covered, then pressure comes, throws away OOB.
2nd and 10: Quick draw to McCoy for 4. Foles long arms means he can let the back
get almost past him and then still stick it in there for them. Tricky.
3rd and 6: Unblocked rush from the left, Foles eats it for a sack.

    14:03 of the 4th, 24-6, from the Eagle 18

1st and 10: Incomplete to Maclin with defenders closing from both sides, hard hit to Mac.
Stared him down. Amazing how that leads defenders right to the play. Poor Maclin.

    2nd and 10: Delay run loses 5.
3rd and 15: Runs away from collapsing pocket, maintains distance from pursuer nicely while
looking downfield, finally throws it away OOB.

Another TD drive by the Redskins 31-6

10:24 of the 4th, at the Eagle 20

1st and 10: Foles bumbles around with immediate pressure, turns left and throws
a pass to the back that is clearly backwards, and it’s dropped. Eagles lucky to recover,
    stupid decision.

2nd and 18: Bad pass to the right nowhere near the receiver, close to intercepted but too high.
3rd and 18: Blitzer comes free and fast at Foles, who flips it very quickly forward
to McCoy and gets a roughing the passer call when the defender hits him hard.
1st and 10: Sacked hard from behind.
    2nd and 17: A draw for 9
    3rd and 8: Defensive holding.
1st and 10: Incomplete to Cooper, low but catchable.
2nd and 10: Incomplete deep left to Jackson, he’s well covered.
    3rd and 10: False start
3rd and 15: Short pass left for loss of 3.

    3:38 of the 4th, 31-6, from the Eagle 9.

    1st and 10: Run left for 5
2nd and 5: Foles throws an ugly wormburner to the right about 5 yards short of the receiver.
3rd and 5: He follows that with a good throw to an open TE for 10 and 1st down.
1st and 10: Pass short left to Cooper for 5.
2nd and 5: Short right incomplete, receiver drop.
3rd and 5: Pressure, he escapes the pocket, buys time to the right, finds a receiver open
right at the 1st down marker and rifles it in to him. Excellent play.

1st and 10: Pressure again, deliberate throw OOB
    2nd and 10: Run right for 7
3rd and 3: High tight throw down the middle to a covered Cooper where only he could get it, but defender
    breaks it up.
    4th and 3: Defense offsides
1st and 10: Another scorcher off the turf, bad throw.
2nd and 10: Foles hits Cooper in stride across the middle for a 1st down.
1st and 10: Quick pass left to Cooper for 7
2nd and 3: Incomplete deep right. Lots of defenders there.
3rd and 3: Throws it away to avoid a sack
4th and 3: Pass for 1st down yardage is dropped by an open receiver.

WA kneels it out. Foles numbers: 21/46 204 0 TD 2 INT

The Eagles couldn’t get out of their own way, and Foles was part of that.
They all took turns being inconsistent, and got embarrassed.
Foles up and down all game long.

Sure ‘looks’ like the best DLine
i can remember since the 80’s.
Or you might even have to go back to the 70’s.

No 80s line comes close to matching what they have now. A lot of those were weak 3/4 DLs anyway.

The last good one was 99. Wistrom Farr Agnew Carter.

2001 was just okay. Wistrom Young Zgonina Little.

    Before that?

1977. Youngblood Brooks Jones Dryer. And they had nothing like Donald.

Of course before that is…um…they had a name…a famous nickname… the 4 Fearful something… the ones with that Merlin Deacon guy.

Chip Kelly runs a QB-driven offense. It’s a much better tool for looking at what Foles can and cannot do. He played some horrific halfs last season, while at the same time, playing complimentary terrific halfs in the same game. The problem – you never know what you’re going to get game-to-game from Foles. Inconsistency might as well be his middle name.

Heck – watch the opener vs the Jags last season. First half – Foles is a disaster. 2nd half – picks them apart, mostly using the TE. Other games, this flips where the first half is great, but the 2nd half sucks.

Justin Blalock has left Detroit, is back home, still a free agent. May visit Rams next week

Wagoner on how many OL they could sign, counting Barksdale:

    Nick Wagoner @nwagoner

Think two is more likely, three is possible still. We’ll see how market plays out, guys have to want to play there still.

I don’t think it’s too hard to understand why JT might be a little miffed. As the local beat writer, I’m sure there have been more than a few times that he’s been told something by someone in the FO, be it Snead, Fisher, or Demoff, but was asked to keep it quiet for some period of time. And chances are he probably went along with their wishes rather than turning around and letting the cat of the bag in a column or chat.

IF that’s an accurate assessment, he probably feels he had demonstrated he could be trusted by the org to not be a blabbermouth about every little tidbit thrown his way. And then to be as totally shut out of the Bradford trade rumors as us fans, I think I’d be a little miffed also.

IMO, being a beat writer for any team in any sport is probably a bit of a PITA job these days. It’s their job to report what they know about the team, but yet they have to establish a relationship with the FO of that team, and the players, as well. And it would be difficult to build that relationship if you publicly disclosed every little tidbit that came out of someone’s mouth in the org.

Interestingly enough, it sounds like Chip Kelly contacted Bob Stoops and at least one other Oklahoma coach about Bradford in the time leading up to the trade. And ya KNOW that had to get back to at least Sam at some point. So, perhaps JT could have done a little more digging along those lines and put 2&2 together rather than (apparently) being so reliant on his ‘insider’ status. But still, I could see him being upset at being treated like a complete outsider.

Fwiw I moved posts about future qb considerations, including the cap and contracts and franchising qbs etc., to its own thread.

Sure is easier to have good players
when yer QB is only making a couple million bucks.

    Hold on though.

    That’s just one year.

If they keep Foles, as a young starting qb up for his 2nd contract, he will get more than Bradford got. It’s either that or they let him walk. So starting next year, if they like Foles and keep him, we’re talking about a market that gives starting qbs in their second contract an avg. of around 19 M a year. Bradford averaged around 13 M a year.

Seattle is in the process of going through the same thing with Wilson.
