Journalist permanently blinded in one eye by ‘rubber bullet’ during US protests

A journalist covering the George Floyd rallies has been left blinded in one eye after apparently being hit by a rubber bullet. Linda Tirado, 37, from Tennessee, was photographing scenes in Minneapolis, which has erupted in protests and rioting since Mr Floyd’s death while in the custody of ex-policeman Derek Chauvin.

After her injury on Saturday, she told social media followers: ‘[What] we think happened is I took a rubber bullet to the face. ‘It exploded my eyeball, which has now been patched back together but who knows if it’ll need more surgery. My vision is gone no matter what it winds up looking like scar wise.’

WV, I dunno that “black people” didn’t vote en masse.

There was massive voter disenfranchisement BY the DNC in a way that would make Texas Republicans proud.

Black people under 45 overwhelmingly voted for him.

Why? Well, older folks of every demo get their news from the MSM and the MSM basically was blacking Bernie out while shit talking him 24/7.

So, older folks trusted the news that blasted him constantly.

I mean, propaganda works, right? Younger people are more active and there’s better info out there now IF YOU WANT IT. The system didn’t dumb down black people, they try to dumb down everyone.

Those who have any sort of informational checks and balances chose Bernie. Those who relied on the state propaganda of the MSM chose Biden.

In that respect, it wasn’t a racial question.

    ==============

Well, so then a lot of ‘older blacks’ were dummed down by the system.
And a lot of working class whites were dummed down by the system.

Not all, of course. But millions and millions.

I just think we can go ahead and be blunt about it. I get tired of tip-toe-ing around it.

    We all agree that:
    1) the ‘system’ relies on what can broadly be called corporate-PROPAGANDA.
    2) The Corporate-Propaganda WORKS. (you said it, yourself)
Therefore, it follows, that since it ‘works’
    3) Millions of older-black and working-class white (among others) have been
    Dummed-the-fuck-down.

I’ve watched a lot of utubes on this. And a lot of white and black people just dont wanna come out and say no.3. But no.3 is a big part of it.

We live in a Corporate-run Idiocracy. The one, leads to the other.

And the Bio-sphere is gonna be saved…how? 🙂

    From the article:

“…That, experts say, speaks to a cultural attitude that is endemic to the profession, and is hard to change with new chiefs or rules.

Thomson encountered this when he tried to make change in Camden. The police department was so dysfunctional that the city took the unprecedented step of disbanding the force and reconstituting a whole new agency from scratch. “When I had the opportunity to build a new police department, I was able to do in three days what would normally take me three years to do, because of work rules, because of the bureaucracy of collective bargaining agreements — there are a lot of impediments to reform,” Thomson said….”

    ——-
I agree it is ‘hard to change’ with new Leaders, but its not ‘that’ hard. Zero tolerance, from the Chiefs. Weed out the Goons.

    Dick Vermeil did it.

Just need longer practices maybe 🙂

    How about this?

Part of the reason cops feel afraid for their lives is that a) they’re out of shape, b) white and are scared of black people and c) don’t have the adequate non-lethal training be it Krav Maga or BJJ to subdue people.

I had the occasion to talk with a CRASH cop, short, stout Korean dude who would FUME at the lazy cops who would shoot instead of scrap.

Yeah, it’s dangerous, but that’s why they get paid and are given larger protections under the law. Harming a police officer is an aggravating factor.

I’ve seen videos of cops doing it exactly right and plenty of videos of them doing it exactly wrong…like, in every way.

There are differences in the behaviors and beliefs of cops who draw only as a last resort and those cops who draw and unsafely their weapon even before they can fully examine the situation.

I’ve yet to see a single person who’s about this issue in good faith EVER criticize a cop for engaging in good faith, even if that ended in death.

The problem is that Dylan Roof killed 9 people and was gently taken into custody. He went to jail without a mark on him.

Chauvin murdered Floyd, who he’d known for as much as 17 years due to working in the same place after hours, by literally choking him to death…in broad daylight…while being filmed.

How about the police need to justify any use of force as opposed to the people having to PROVE that they did nothing to provoke violence against them by police.

Also, are we gonna talk about provocation? It used to be that one had to threaten or endanger a cop in order to justify violence. Now? Just tell the cop to fuck himself and he’ll bring all the violence he can muster AND with the support of the state UNLESS the citizen can prove that the violence is unjustified.

The TL;dr in this is that this isn’t the time to make the “most cops are good cops” argument.

Good cops would have intervened in all this bullshit long ago… even if we just start with Rodney King… And they fucking don’t. It’s almost unheard of for a police officer to support the citizen over the fellow cop EVEN IF THE COP IS ENGAGED IN ILLEGAL ACTIVITY.

So yeah, rather than shoot people in the extremities ala Barnaby Jones, maybe..Oh, I dunno… actually de-escalate and if needed engage in non-lethal measures?

    =====================

Well, most of the cops I know here in WV, are already very much into Braz.Ju.Jitsu etc. They love that stuff.

Which is nice. But BJJ knowledge still wont stop Racist-Cops from being Brutal.

I think there’s gotta be some form of civilian review board for incidents. The Fox just cant be in charge of the hen-house.

    The start is Bernie’s platform.

That is a well articulated beginning with achievable goals. A lot of it was low hanging fruit like Medicare for All, student loan forgiveness and a host of other policies addressing issues of class and race.

We accomplish that by starting a 3rd party and doubling or more the ground force that Bernie was able to put together.

Socialists via the labor movement fought for the weekend.

Not even the most die hard conservative is giving that back.

And we gotta start at all levels, we can’t wait for percolate up and we can’t expect national wins to just flow down.

    ========================

Well, black people had a chance to vote for Bernie. He was right there.
And they picked the “same old shit” candidate instead.
Explain that to me, Mack? 🙂

My own, dark, explanation is that the System dummed down black people. So they voted for Same-Old-Shit.
Just like the system dummed down white people — and we got Trump. Who was “even-worse-than-the-same-old-shit.”

    Bernie…was…right…there. And they rejected him.

The protestors SAY they want change. They rejected change. They VOTED for the same-old-shit.

    The system created an ebony-and-ivory-Idiocracy.

Sorry. I will shut up now.

Anywayz….doesnt Black Lives Matter have a list of Specific policies to change police depts?

Biden did say he opposed ‘cash bail’ which is nice.
The shooting to maim comment was stupid and is an example of his tone-deafness.

He needs to come out with an eight or ten point plan for CHANGING police forces. Not a rambling, half-assed cliche-fest.

Its an historical time. What will he actually DO to prevent police brutality?

The thing is…police taking a knee does zero to change institutional racism. Ya know. We need actual policy changes. When will ‘that’ happen?

    Of course.

But it’s better that this happens than it doesn’t.

For one thing, this (the police joining protests) is breaking up a lot of the old narratives. Like, the “people have to stop this war on police” thing I hear around in places. Simple response–some police hear the protestors and they know it’s not a war on them.

    ===============

Well, thats true. And its also true that it will just picked-up-on by the media and police and the politicians as a nice photo-op and as an example of change.
Its like when a man tells a woman to “calm down.” Its not the same as actually listening.

I’m not saying its a ‘bad thing.’ But its not ‘change’ in any meaningful sense.

It reminds me of how the NFL handles things when they dont like a particular message.

    What do i know, though.

I came across this post last night, and have to share it. I vaguely know this person. Her family went to the same church I went to as a kid, and she posted this on my idiot right-wing brother’s FB post of Trump’s tweet declaring Antifa a terrorist organization. There is just so much…well…read it for yourself. It’s breath-taking. The vast amount of gullibility required to swallow one word of this…and the inherent racism…it’s truly impressive.

    News in Brief
Sweatshop Worker Devastated To Hear Jacket She Worked So Hard On Looted
    —-
SHENZHEN, CHINA—Upset about the theft of one of the thousands of garments she had sewn, sweatshop worker Li Chen was devastated to hear Monday that the jacket she worked so hard on was looted. “It breaks my heart that I slaved away for 14 cents an hour in an extremely hot and poorly ventilated factory just to have my hard work stolen from Zara,” said Chen, explaining that it felt like she lost the tip of her finger sewing the lapel for nothing after learning that someone snatched the garment rather than paying the full retail price. “I don’t work 16-hour shifts so some person can waltz into a store and take the jacket I made without paying $85. It’s just absolutely devastating, that stitching was a nightmare. I should just take a pay cut to help out this poor company and everything they’ve been through. I feel bad for my shift supervisor who put his heart and soul into screaming at me to work faster.” At press time, Chen was comforted to learn that insurance covered the stolen item, and Zara would be just fine.

As US protests show, the challenge is how to rise above the violence inherent in state power
    2 June 2020
“…Nonetheless, it is entirely wrong to suggest, as a New York Times editorial did yesterday, that police impunity can be largely ascribed to “powerful unions” shielding officers from investigation and punishment. The editorial board needs to go back to school. The issues currently being exposed to the harsh glare of daylight get to the heart of what modern states are there to do – matters rarely discussed outside of political theory classes….”

    ———–

Well Diversity is important. True. But allowing more identity-groups into the higher levels of a ‘dirty-rotten-system’ (to quote Dorothy Day) still leaves us with a dirty rotten system. Just with a more diverse group running it.

Ya need Diversity PLUS something-else. A dismantling of the worst elements of the system, policy by policy. How can that be done in this Corporate-Idiocracy? Uh….

….Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer announced Monday that he had fired Louisville Metro Police Chief Steve Conrad after learning that the body cameras of the officers who had fired their weapons were not active at the time of the shooting.

Fischer, along with family members, identified the victim as David McAtee, the beloved chef and owner of a popular barbecue joint located next to the Dino’s Food Mart, who was known to be a “good friend” to LMPD officers.

Well, the Virus, the economic depression, the Energizing of the Black Community, the fact that Trump’s act is probly wearing a bit thin with some undecideds,
and the fact Biden is ahead in some key swing states…means Biden is in good shape to Win in November.

Of course, Trump knows that, so that could mean War with Iran,
Internment Camps for Liberals. Or World War III. Hard to say.
But Trump only knows one way to fight — No Holds Barred.

    News in Brief

Protestors Criticized For Looting Businesses Without Forming Private Equity Firm First

MINNEAPOLIS—Calling for a more measured way to express opposition to police brutality, critics slammed demonstrators Thursday for recklessly looting businesses without forming a private equity firm first. “Look, we all have the right to protest, but that doesn’t mean you can just rush in and destroy any business without gathering a group of clandestine investors to purchase it at a severely reduced price and slowly bleed it to death,” said Facebook commenter Amy Mulrain, echoing the sentiments of detractors nationwide who blasted the demonstrators for not hiring a consultant group to take stock of a struggling company’s assets before plundering. “I understand that people are angry, but they shouldn’t just endanger businesses without even a thought to enriching themselves through leveraged buyouts and across-the-board terminations. It’s disgusting to put workers at risk by looting. You do it by chipping away at their health benefits and eventually laying them off. There’s a right way and wrong way to do this.” At press time, critics recommended that protestors hold law enforcement accountable by simply purchasing the Minneapolis police department from taxpayers.
