Jets on Nick Fairley as part of contingency plan

The Jets’ talented and deep defensive line might be the heartbeat of their team, but that won’t preclude the brain trust from adding another piece if necessary.

The Daily News has learned that Gang Green is interested in free agent defensive tackle Nick Fairley as part of a contingency plan should they lose one or more key pieces up front.

Free agent nose tackle Damon Harrison is expected to have multiple suitors in free agency this week and could be too pricey for the cap-strapped Jets, who only had $6-7 million in spending money as of Monday night. The Jets would love to trade Mo Wilkerson for a first-round pick in a tag-and-trade scenario.

The Jets will free up more cap space with predictable cuts and contract restructures in the coming days, but they’ll still have to make judicious choices.

The 6-0, 308-pound Fairley, the No. 13 overall pick by the Lions in 2011, played 15 games for the Rams last season. Fairley, who is lighter now than a few years ago when he was around 320 pounds, is best suited as a three-technique tackle. He had 5 ½ and 6 sacks in 2012 and 2013 before missing the second half of 2014 with a knee injury.

Fairley, who has had run-ins with the law in the past stemming from DUI and reckless driving, would be a solid interior pass-rushing complement for Todd Bowles’ defense.
