I wonder if Lamar Jackson has made Ravens fans forget about Tony Banks.

he’s gotta be better than rypien.

That pretty much sums up all I have to say about Wentz, and about all I expect from Wentz.

J.B. Long@JB_Long Puka Nacua just broke the @RamsNFL rookie record for receptions in… Week 9. 63 and counting for @AsapPuka. Previous mark was held by his teammate Cooper Kupp in 2017 (62).

Nacua has a long way to go to hit the all-time top 10.

These are rookie years, btw. Not all-time season reception leaders. I didn’t make that clear. This graph is for rookie seasons.

Just watched the highlights today. Obviously, this team is a helpless with a Quarterback with ‘that’ amount of talent and that amount of experience. Thing is, we knew Stafford was an aging, patched-together-QB. I have not liked McVay’s solution to the backup QB issue for the last few years. I dont get it. I wanted a decent vet backup. …basically, i ‘always’ want a decent vet back up QB though. I wanted a decent back up QB back when Trent Green went down. Like, say, Hostetler. But did Vermeil listen? No. I guess we’ll see how much fight this team has in it, as the season goes along. Wont be a lot of wins, though. But it would be nice to outhit some teams and maybe get a win over, say, the 49ers. w v

Based on nothing, I have this kind of “gut feeling” that McVay/the Rams did not really put any energy into Rypien.

Bennett was supposed to be #2, and he was, until he wasn’t. At which point #3 started holding the clipboard, and by then the season had started, so everybody got busy with the game at hand, and the Training and Teaching part of the season was largely over.

I just don’t think anybody worked with Rypien to make sure he understood the system etc., or gave him any reps. It was interesting to me that Robinson and Trammel both got their only reception of the year against GB. Stafford never threw to these guys. But they went into the game with Rypien which suggests to me that McVay was at least trying to place some guys around Rypien whom he was familiar with on a first-name basis.

Now, if I’m right that McVay put zero effort into grooming Rypien, it’s hardly a season-breaker cuz they never figured to be a serious contender, and Rypien was never in the plans anyway. If this happened during a “real” season, I think I’d be kinda pissed. This isn’t a good look for McVay, no matter how you evaluate it, but…you know…this seems like a “lapse” to me. An understandable lapse, but it’s a lapse.

I don’t like Wentz much. But the Rams don’t take my calls anymore so I guess I have no input. …

I s’pose you wanted them to bring in Bert Jones for a looksie.

    Apart from Seattle, though, I {partially} recall only one other time where I saw McVay do this, and it was when he came out with a greater emphasis on running the ball. It might have been against the Colts;

That was Arizona. Good post btw and I agree. The entire Rodrigue article I quote is at the end of this thread: media, twitter, some plays, the big articles, etc. … GB game

Yeah, I read the whole article after I wrote my post, and thought I discerned an echo in here, but I figured it was best not to mention it, or I might get banned.

Horrible game. Mcvay has hit rock bottom with his play calling. He continues to pre align with a back to take care of the safety telling the defense exactly what he is going to call. It’s never worked once since he began doing it.

    Wait…what?

    Can you elaborate on that?

NT Kobie Turner recorded career-high numbers on Sunday. He totaled single-game career bests in tackles (10), sacks (1.0), and tackles causing unsuccessful plays for the offense (5). Turner also recorded 2 pressures, 1 QB hit, 1 hurry, and 1 tackle for loss.

No doubt it is helpful to play next to Aaron Donald, but what Turner and Young are doing is pretty impressive for DL rookies even so.

there’s a difference between understanding how to adjust and then having the ability (skill, experience, yes inclusive to calls, menu of calls etc) to do it. Probably somewhere in the middle and a hard lesson for a coach who is used to vets to learn, plus a hard lesson for young players to learn quickly. I hearken back to 2019 …different circumstances but still had a face a league shift he helped create head on, and it was tough sledding. Did it, though. I think McVay is a great coach who is going through the learning curves and league arcs most others do while assistants, not in the big seat. That said learning and growth by ALL must occur. That’s what they promised this year would truly be about, after all.

This is one area I would really like to see growth from McVay and his coaching staff. I thought I was beginning to see it Week 1 against the Seahawks, when the Rams made halftime adjustments, and came out and rolled Seattle in the second half. This is something of a deficiency in McVay, and I would be happy to believe that he sees this year – not only as a chance to teach a bunch of young guys how to play football – but as an opportunity to focus on areas of development for him. Like this.

Apart from Seattle, though, I {partially} recall only one other time where I saw McVay do this, and it was when he came out with a greater emphasis on running the ball. It might have been against the Colts; I don’t remember. But whatever it was, I wasn’t sure I was seeing a change in strategy so much as a change in tactics, and I don’t recall it lasting longer than a single drive.

Anyway…seeing what the defense is taking away – and thus allowing – is one of McVay’s significant weaknesses, imo. I’d like to see McVay “deviate from the tape” himself, on the fly, instead of basically making all his play calls on Wednesday.

I think the Rams win that game comfortably if Stafford plays. Rypien not only played himself off the Rams’ roster, but possibly out of the NFL altogether with that performance. Heck, I think the Rams would have won that game behind Wolford.

    They missed Jones as well.

Blaine Grisak @bgrisakTST Brett Rypien’s last start came last season for the Denver Broncos against the Arizona Cardinals. The Broncos won that game 24-15 as Rypien went 21-for-26 for 197 yards, throwing one touchdown and an interception.

I think I would take that line for today.

I remember when Spags hired McDaniels in 2011, and I couldn’t stand him. He was a bit of a jerk to the players and was openly caustic to guys who were behind in his system, while giving every indication he actually didn’t know how to teach his system. I remember WV and I discussing that at the time and agreeing that McDaniels sounded like a prick.

Yeah, his getting fired again comes as no surprise. You would think he would have burned out all his options by now.

Sources: Raiders fired HC Josh McDaniels and GM Dave Ziegler.

So far, my hatred of the Raiders is holding up in spite of their never-ending incompetence as a franchise. Most teams, I would have long ago started to feel pity for, but somehow the Raiders are still beyond the reach of pity.

yeah. i have doubts about whether the niners can afford young beyond this season. i think the rams are in good shape. now is not the time to be making a trade like that.

Not for the Rams. No, zn and I see the Rams situation exactly the same way. They were reloading this year, and getting a rental like Young was never considered inside HQ. They will be active this off-season.

For the 9ers, it is absolutely the right play, even if they can’t resign Young. And they probably can’t.

But they are putting together a shitload of pressure on the DL, and it’s a great move for them. Hopefully, it doesn’t pan out, but it’s a smart, bold move for them.

9ers all-in like the Rams were two years ago, although they gave up a lot less for Young than the Rams did for Miller. A lot less.

According to @PFF, OLB Byron Young has the 13th-best defensive grade (68.2) and the eighth-best pressure grade (70.4) for all rookie defensive players. He is also tied for ninth in the NFL in quarterback hits (13). @byron_97 #RamsHouse

Young was the 38th defensive player chosen overall.

He was the 25th front 7 player chosen.

He was the 21st DL chosen (if you count EDGE as DL).

It’s bad when Rodrigue compares the Rams to a fart in her opening sentence:

ARLINGTON, Texas — Sunday’s Los Angeles Rams were a portrait of pure disaster, the kind of disaster that lingers in the air long after the moment passes like a too-heavy breaking of wind.
