znModeratorJourdan Rodrigue@JourdanRodrigueRams TE Tyler Higbee says he chuckled when he saw all the rookies out on the field stretching this week, because there were so many of them he thought, “this looks like a whole team right here!” He adds they’re a group that’s not shy about asking a ton of questions right away.
znModeratorI have a completely unproveable suspicion about Rams draft picks. I think it’s collaborative stacking the board before the draft but I also think McV gets favorites and tends to prefer certain guys with the first pick which is of course usually a 2nd rounder. After the 2nd round McV defers more to the personnel guys. Avila doesn’t fit this but look at the list of Rams 2nd rounders since 2017. They’re mostly skill guys who didn’t meet 2nd round expectations. Arguably, Avila aside, Akers might be the only one that is worthy of round 2 status. This might explain why the Rams 3rd round picks are usually better than their second round picks.

znModeratorMcVay loves what he’s seen from Stafford thus far, saying he looks like “a human JUGS machine out there.”
“He’s been awesome,” McVay said on NFL Network. “He’s got a great look in his eye. And even though he says he’s getting older, he still does look like a human JUGS machine out there. It’s like he was made to throw a football. When he’s feeling good, I feel a lot better as well. He just elevates people around him.”

znModeratorIn my view, if Stafford has solid protection, and he’s healthy, he’s a top three QB. I think O-line protection is more important for him than most. Give him that protection, and I take him over Rodgers. I take him over Hurts, and 99% of the QBs in the league. Problem is, the Rams have not kept up with the rest of the league when it comes to their O-line. They haven’t invested in elite talent in a long, long time . . . until Avila. But one guard or center does not make a line. They need an elite LT at the very least, and that does not exist on the roster. In the absence of an elite offensive line, you need a QB who can run, scramble, extend plays on his own. That’s not Stafford’s MO.
I dunno man. I don’t think you need an elite OL to win, just a solid one. The 2 LOTs in the last super bowl were Jordan Mailata (7th round pick) and Orlando Brown (3rd round). Both solid, neither elite.
Solid OLs do well in the league if other things are in place.
What the Rams are aiming for in their 2023 OL is to have one like the Saints glory days OLs with Brees, when they had fantastic (and big) guards who gave the qb space to step up. I think that’s what’s behind the Avila pick.

znModeratorZN, What’s your take on the schedule, as far as why it seems like they really stuck it to the Rams? The folks at NFL Live rated the Rams as having the second toughest schedule — unless I misread their graph. I thought it was supposed to be based on W/L record. Um, well, the Rams were 5-12, or did the league forget that part?
Not everyone is rating their schedule that tough, though it’s certainly not easy. PFF doesn’t even have it as a top 10 on their toughest schedules rankings.
The schedule is based on W/L but there are other factors. There’s the division, and there’s the AFC division they play. Those things are automatic, regardless of W/L.
One tough part is that they play 4 teams coming off of byes. But I’m not sure that’s deliberate on the league’s part. It seems more like the league doesn’t filter that kind of stuff out, as opposed to them deliberately setting teams up for that.
