Hope you’re right about this next offseason, and I’m guessing you are. The Rams very likely learned a lot about process, team-building, and gained a sense of . . . well, humility . . . from the down year/bounce-back

I really suspect that’s true about what you call the year of humility, and that they learned from it.

If that’s not just wishful thinking on my part, then, good times ahead.

So, i know AD made the pro-bowl again, but he didn’t seem to be quite the wrecking ball he has been in past years — yes? No? I dunno. Has Aaron Donald ‘lost a step’ ? As good as ever? Is this question anathema? Heretical? w v

Donald is a shadow of his former self.

Which means he has been reduced to nothing more than a standard issue pro bowl DL who is top 5 in pressures.

    Father time always wins.

Looking at this stat–excluding quarterbacks, where does KW rank on “rushing yards before contact per attempt” ? He’s tied for 1st (with McAffrey) at 3.2. And no other Ram is even close. The next on the list is Rivers and Freeman at 2.5, which is tied for 18th. So with KW it’s both the OL blocking well and KW reading/using his blocks really well. KW actually isn’t that impressive after contact. He doesn’t rank very high there (he ranks just about the middle of the league on that stat, 20th of 47). His major damage is done before contact–reading and using the blocking while reading the defenders who are attacking the LOS. 726 of his total 1144 yards rushing come before contact.

    — Yeah, this matches up with the eyeball conclusion. He’s a genius at quickly deciding on/creating the best hole. What Cooper Kupp has been to Stafford, K. Williams has been with his Offensive Linemen. There’s a ‘synergy’ or a sharing-of-one-brain, or ‘somethin.’ And it ‘has’ to involve coaching, as well. Some OLine coach is ‘in on this’. I cant remember ‘enjoying’ watching ‘the way’ a RB runs this much since Faulk. And since Faulk had more talent, its almost ‘more’ fun to watch KW because he’s doing it with less raw-measurable-talent. Its often a subtle nuanced talent. And it took me a while to ‘see it.’ But once you see it, you just have to smile on almost every run. Whether its a one yard gain or a fifteen yard gain he’s ‘do’in shit’ out there. AND, despite him not being Earl Campbell after-contact, he does have a fun ‘pop’ when he’s pass blocking. And he blocks cleanly, efficiently. Some backs just look like they are gonna hurt themselves pass-blocking. He knows how to hurt the other guy with one shot. Fun team. Really fun team. Stafford’s out-of-this-world accuracy and boldness. Kupp’s brilliant-shifty-ness. Pakua’s competitive professionalism and enthusiasm. KW. Aaron Donald. The Conductor. Swiss-army knife Higby. The big bad Guards. Just a few players and a kicker shy of being Ring worthy. w v

Ich bin agree with every word of that.

Bruce Smith was drafted in 1985. He went to the Pro Bowl every season from 1987-1998, with the exception of 1991 when he played only 5 games due to injuries. So Aaron Donald is behind only Merlin Olsen, and owns Smith and White.

Yeah I was missing on the “first seasons” detail.

Throw in Dotson, Robinson, and Witherspoon, and one could argue it’s their best offseason, evah. Can they make it rain hidden gems in 2024?

I would argue that 2024 competes with 98: they drafted Wistrom, Little, and Hakim plus a serviceable blocking TE in Wms, and then also signed Proehl and Agnew as FAs while picking up Nutten, McCollum, Warner, and Fletcher . 97 was good too (Pace and several others) as was 99 (Holt, Faulk, Green, and Timmerman). Notably, they hit on all their 1st rounders in that span. That was all Vermeil. When it was just Armey and Martz, they began screwing up.

Meanwhile the 2023 Rams would not be themselves if they hadn’t scored on a number of picks and pick-ups in previous years, including Fuller, Lake, Jones, Brown, Jackson, Shelton, Kupp, and Williams.

To me the big difference between the previous few years and 2023 is that in 23 they scored on their 2nd round pick, something they had been kind of lacking under McVay/Snead, where they tended to be mediocre. So I hope they continue drafting well in the lower rounds as they have all along, while repeating what they did in 2023 with rounds  1 and 2. (Obviously they didn’t have a 1st in 2023 but you know what I mean–I am hoping they do with the 1 and 2 in 2024 what they finally did with the 2 in 23).

Los Angeles Rams PR@TheLARamsPR DT Aaron Donald was selected to his 10th career Pro Bowl and is the only defensive lineman since 1970 to make the Pro Bowl in each of his first 10 seasons. He joins Pro Football Hall of Famers Reggie White (13) and Bruce Smith (11) as the only defensive linemen since 1970 with 10 Pro Bowl selections

ok. my question still stands though. who was the last player before donald to make the pro bowl in each of their first ten seasons?

I don’t know the last player who did but the last 2 DL who did were White and Smith (last year for both was 98).

i’m gonna venture a guess and say the last one was merlin olsen?

Olsen was in 14 consecutive pro bowls, from 1962 to 1975. Joe Greene was in 11, 1969-1970.

Not that’s a big deal at all but we both read it wrong IR! We missed on “since 1970” which apparently means drafted since 1970. This tweet is a little more clear:

k.williams ranks #1 in run success rate among all rb for 2023 – he also ranks #1 for the 2010-2023 fourteen-year stretch.
a successful run gains at least 40% of yards-to-go on 1st down, 60% on 2nd down, and 100% on 3rd & 4th down – no one has been more successful than kw.

After Sean McVay told Kyren Williams he was going to be resting/sitting against the 49ers, Williams said his first question was: “Am I still going to practice?” “Because, I still want to practice. Like, I don’t want to just sit down and just watch everybody.”

So, what changed for the Rams after the bye?   Is it as simple as getting KW back?   Is there more to it?   w v

Well obviously KW was a big part of it, but so was consolidation of the OL and other things they tightened up over the bye. I think they really used the bye–lots of new coaches re-assessing and tightening up what a lot of young players were doing, different approaches to things.

7 of Turner’s sacks are after the bye. 3.5 of Jones’s sacks are after the bye. Robinson has 25 catches after the bye, 1 before. They figured out how to use Nacua and Kupp together more effectively after the bye. The OL tightened up and gave up fewer pressures after the bye (so new coach with new OL reviews film and goes let;s do more of this and less of that, and we have to do this thing better).

That’s new coaches sitting down to figure out what they had, and getting young players to step up by putting them in the position to step up.

And Wms was absolutely a big part of it but there seemed to be a lot of tweaks and re-thinks and re-assessments after the bye.

Plus Stafford came back ready to play as well as he ever has.

Or at least, all that is what Demoff told me when I asked. He sent a long email. I’ll look for it. It’s in my folders somewhere. I think under “rare golden definitive inside scoop.” I’ll look.

Kobie turner has played 660 snaps in his rookie year. Jalen Carter has played 528. 100+ more snaps. As a result

Kobie has more pressures than Carter.
Kobie has more sacks than Carter.
Kobie has more total tackles than Carter.
Kobie has more defensive stops than Carter

Btw Jared Goff has more yards and more touchdowns than Lamar Jackson, but that doesn’t mean he’s gonna win MVP over him lol

    Scoot@_SC00T
Jalen Carter v. Kobie Turner last 7 games only:

    Carter defensive 277 snaps
    Kobie defensive 278 snaps

    Carter 15 pressures
    Kobie 32 pressures

    Carter 2 sacks
    Kobie 7 sacks

    Carter 14 tackles
    Kobie 23 tackles

    Carter 69.9 PFF grade
    Kobie 80.4 PFF grade

Yes. For those who don’t know, Wms grew up in St. Louis as a Rams fan and his favorite player was Jackson.

The Rams will also rest receiver Cooper Kupp, running back Kyren Williams, defensive tackle Aaron Donald and inside linebacker Ernest Jones, McVay said. Tight end Tyler Higbee (shoulder) and offensive lineman Joe Noteboom (foot) will miss Sunday’s game due to their injuries.

    So they’re resting

    Stafford

    Noteboom

    Higbee

    Kupp

    Donald

    ..

    [see link above]

    ..

Carson Wentz will start for the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers, head coach Sean McVay said on Wednesday, giving Matthew Stafford an extra week of rest before the wild-card round.

“Excited about Carson’s opportunity,” said McVay, “but when you look at the totality of balancing what you think is best, there’s not a perfect solution especially when you’re talking about 53 guys, 48 active, able to flex two up (but) we do have a couple injuries … This was just what we felt like was the best thing.”

“When you look at it, what we just felt like was this approach was the best one for our team,” said McVay, also indicating that the Rams did not consider variables such as playoff seeding in the decision.

Going into Sunday’s matchup,  The 49ers will also start a backup QB in Sam Darnold as they rest Brock Purdy.

Receiver Puka Nacua, who is just 29 yards away from the all-time rookie receiving record, appears to be getting at least a shot at breaking it.

“I think you’d like to see him get an opportunity to do something special,” said McVay. “And then be smart with him.”

Wentz was signed as a free agent by the Rams during their Week 10 bye. Sunday will mark the first significant minutes he has played this season, minus a few handoffs in garbage time wins.

But Wentz has gotten plenty of work in practice while running the scout team, minus a third quarterback on the roster. He’s also very active on the sidelines during games, something McVay lightheartedly noticed after the Rams beat the Washington Commanders in Week 15.

“He was buzzing back and forth in front of me like running wind sprints. I actually noticed that yesterday,” McVay said. “I don’t know what the hell was going on. He was staying loose though. I do know that much. … He wanted to get some extra cardio in during the game. He was double dipping … I actually did notice that a couple times as this big creature was buzzing back and forth in front of me on the sidelines.”

Now, Wentz will get his opportunity to play actual football in 2024.

The Rams are Wentz’s fourth team in as many seasons, since he was the Philadelphia Eagles’ No. 2 draft pick in 2016 (Eagles from 2016 to 2020, Indianapolis Colts in 2021 and Commanders in 2022).

Wentz started seven games for the Commanders last season, throwing for 1,755 yards with 11 touchdowns, nine interceptions and an 80.2 passer rating.

Dresser Winn, who was with the team in training camp, was signed to the practice squad this week and will be the backup to Wentz.

Incredible bit of NFL Research: @RamsNFL RB @Kyrenwilliams23 is on pace to be the only player in history to miss 4+ games & still finish in the top 2 in rushing yards.

The only player to miss more games & finish top 3 was Bull Karcis (5) with the 1937 Pittsburgh… PIRATES.
