I have screenshots of this crime, but I have to upload them somewhere to post them here, I think? I

The way to do that is to convert them to jpegs and that’s easy. Then you just use the “img” function to post them.

Here’s the easy as pie site that converts images on your computer to jpegs. Once the process is done you get a thumbnail, then you click the thumbnail to get the image proper, then just right click on that image and hit “copy image address” and then that’s the code you can post here with “img.”

it does sound unlikely but there were times in the preseason he looked pretty good. at times.

so i figure he’s gotta be close at the very least.

There was good recent article on this that didn’t get much in the way of responses.

It was by Michael Silver, who is a Fisher confidante. Here’s Silver on Goff:

While Fisher and his assistants would like to see Goff reduce the amount of interceptions he throws against the scout team, they’re convinced that if thrown into the fray immediately, he has the physical skill, instincts and intelligence to thrive. That said, they recognize that he is only 21, and that many successful quarterbacks — including Palmer, now 36 — benefitted by observing and learning in the early part of their careers.

One explanation I heard is that there are just too many alternate ways to take in a game. You don’t have to sit down on Sunday and watch the live version with commercials.

Also…saturation. Sunday games, Sunday night games, Monday night games, Thursday night games.

“Growing the brand” is of course another stupid “Jerry Jones era NFL” type idea.

Two reasons I am glad the Rams picked Donald in the 2014 draft.

    1. He’s a joy to watch.

    2. Because he’s a Ram the Rams don’t have to play against him.

Theyve gone from completely standing still, to…sputtering, smoking, backfiring and clunking along at eight miles an hour on two good tires and a broken axle.

Let’s add that they won the last 2 games on the road and had to come from behind both times.

Two Sunday’s ago I had a stroke. I’m not dead (obviously), but lets just say I’ve had some free time. I’ll be fine. Prognosis is good. I’m doing my rehab. Yada yada…

I am sorry to hear that happened but very glad you’re doing well. Keep us updated.

And great post. Good read. Lots of interesting observations.

Things you might have missed from the Rams’ 17-13 win over the Arizona Cardinals

    http://www.latimes.com/sports/rams/la-sp-rams-cardinals-notice-20161002-snap-story.html

Here are a few things you might have missed from the Rams’ 17-13 win over the Arizona Cardinals at University of Phoenix Stadium.

    FIRST QUARTER

Cardinals running back Chris Johnson’s weak block on Maurice Alexander led to the first sack of Carson Palmer. The quarterback spun to his left to fake a handoff to Johnson, but the back was on the other side eyeing a blitzing Alexander. His hit didn’t slow the safety, whose first sack of the year cost the Cardinals nine yards.

On Brian Quick’s 65-yard touchdown catch, the Cardinals secondary overran the receiver. Cornerback Marcus Cooper was airborne and reached out to slow Quick, but the 6-foot-3 receiver flew by. Safety Tony Jefferson over-pursued to the sideline and lost his footing as he tried to reverse direction.

    SECOND QUARTER

The Rams nearly gifted the Cardinals with a touchdown after Johnson’s 18-yard run deep into L.A. territory. Mark Barron shoved Johnson after he was out of bounds and was flagged for unnecessary roughness, extending the gain by 15 yards. Johnson later rushed up the middle for an apparent 13-yard score, but the play was nullified by a holding penalty on tight end Jermaine Gresham.

On the same drive, nose tackle Michael Brockers came off the line of scrimmage to make a tackle on Cardinals running back David Johnson. Brockers’ quick feet kept Arizona in a third-and-long situation and the Cardinals were forced to settle for a field goal.

The Cardinals secondary experienced some confusion on Kenny Britt’s 34-yard catch, his longest of the game. Patrick Peterson and Tyrann Mathieu both stepped up to defend Tavon Austin, which opened space for Britt to make the catch. The play helped set up a Rams field goal for a 10-3 lead.

    THIRD QUARTER

Greg Robinson had a difficult day. The left tackle did all he could to slow down Arizona’s Chandler Jones, including holding the pass rusher, but he couldn’t stop him from knocking the ball from Case Keenum’s hands and recovering it. Robinson also was flagged for holding and later was called for being an ineligible receiver downfield on what would have been a pass that moved the Rams into field-goal range. Instead, they had to punt.

    FOURTH QUARTER

E.J. Gaines was the Rams’ co-leader in tackles (seven) in his first game back from injury. He got on the stat sheet with a tackle of David Johnson on third down that forced the Cardinals to settle for a field goal in the second quarter. Other highlights included a ball-popping hit on Gresham and stopping Darren Fells from getting out of bounds in the final minute.

What we learned from Rams’ 17-13 victory over the Arizona Cardinals

    http://www.latimes.com/sports/rams/la-sp-rams-what-we-learned-20161002-snap-story.html

    Gary Klein

Brian Quick is playing with confidence

The veteran receiver has three touchdown receptions in the last two games.

A week after scoring the Rams’ first touchdown this season on a 44-yard play at Tampa Bay, Quick turned a midrange reception against the Cardinals into a 65-yard scoring play. He also used his leaping ability to outjump a defender for a four-yard touchdown that put the Rams ahead in the fourth quarter.

Quick endured a long training camp that included chastising from Coach Jeff Fisher for dropping passes.

That has not been an issue the last two weeks.

The Rams need cornerback E.J. Gaines

Gaines played in a regular season game for the first time since 2014 and fortified the secondary with a physical style.

Gaines was sidelined because of a foot injury in 2015 and sat out three games this season because of a thigh issue.

The Rams made Coty Sensabaugh inactive Sunday and again started Troy Hill opposite Trumaine Johnson.

But Gaines came on and made seven tackles and broke up two passes.

Hill has done an admirable job in Gaines’ absence. But the Rams’ defense prides itself on physical play and Gaines, who started 15 games in 2014, provides it.

Todd Gurley can contribute with his hands

The Rams running back has worked before, during and after practices to improve his pass-catching skills.

It paid off against the Cardinals.

He made a one-handed catch that he turned into a 33-yard gain. He caught four other passes for 16 yards, including one that set up the Rams’ go-ahead touchdown.

Trumaine Johnson makes it look easy

The franchise cornerback intercepted a pass, nearly intercepted another and broke up or defended six pass plays.

Johnson’s diving interception in the end zone was balletic.

His plays came a week after he hit a Tampa Bay receiver, causing the ball to ricochet into linebacker Mark Barron’s hands for an interception.

    Aaron Donald is a force

We already knew that, of course, but the two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle showed up in the box score with an obviously meaningful line for the first time this season.

Donald made five tackles, including 1½ sacks, and forced a fumble.

A week after playing all of the defensive line positions at Tampa Bay, Donald helped knock Arizona quarterback Carson Palmer out of the game.

Greg Robinson remains a work in progress.

The left tackle was penalized twice, once for holding on a 27-yard scramble by quarterback Case Keenum and once for being an illegal receiver downfield on another play that Keenum extended.

Robinson is part of a line that has struggled to spring Gurley, who gained only 33 yards in 19 carries.

The Rams are learning how to win on the road

After losing to the San Francisco 49ers in the opener at Santa Clara, the Rams traveled across the country to defeat Tampa Bay and followed that by beating the Cardinals at University of Phoenix Stadium for the second year in a row.

The Rams cannot afford to let up against Buffalo in their second home game on Sunday.

After that, they return to the road for games at Detroit and in London.

    There are safeties in numbers

Defensive coordinator Gregg Williams deployed safeties T.J. McDonald, Maurice Alexander and Cody Davis with great effectiveness.

Alexander made five tackles, including a sack.

McDonald broke up two passes and intercepted a Hail Mary as time expires.

    Davis made one tackle.

One reason the L.A. Rams are 3-1? They have the best player in the NFL.

    Mike Renner

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/sports/wp/2016/10/04/one-reason-the-l-a-rams-are-3-1-they-have-the-best-player-in-the-nfl/?tid=pm_sports_pop_b

Within a matter of hours following their season debut on Monday Night Football, the Los Angeles Rams were the laughing stock of the NFL. In prime time they failed to score a single point on offense and surrendered 28 to a Blaine Gabbert-led San Francisco 49ers team. Meanwhile their No. 1 overall pick and supposed future of the franchise, Jared Goff, looked on from the sideline in street clothes.

What’s happened since though has been nearly unexplainable. The Rams have rattled off three straight wins, two coming against divisional rivals Seattle and Arizona who both made the playoffs a season ago. For a head coach that’s been lampooned in the national media for being unable to evolve, the irony is that the Rams owe their current win streak to a shift in coaching philosophy.

That, and the benefit of employing the best player in the entire NFL: Defensive tackle Aaron Donald.

Let’s take a look at the two biggest factors behind the Rams’ surprising 3-1 start, and how the two fit so well together.

    A shift in scheme

Instead of inventing new coverage principles, Fisher and company turned back the clock to a tried-and-true defensive scheme from the 1970s.

When Lovie Smith was fired from his head coaching position with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after last season, many thought it signaled the death of the Tampa-2 defense, a scheme in which two safeties are responsible for the two deep zones with the cornerbacks and linebackers responsible for five underneath zones. The truth is that the coverage scheme as a philosophy was already all but abandoned. Tampa Bay was running cover-1 more often than the scheme with the city’s namesake in 2015 as the Tampa-2 accounted for only 29 percent of their coverage – still a much higher rate than anyone else in the league though. The defense that rose to fame when Tony Dungy was hired to the same position 20 years prior was now a coverage employed almost exclusively on third-and-long and end-of-game situations.

That is until Jeff Fisher and defensive coordinator Greg Williams altered their game plans after their Week 1 beatdown. Over the last three games, the Rams have dialed the Tampa-2 on 37.4 percent of their coverage snaps (outside of goal line situations) – the highest rate in the NFL and easily the Rams’ most employed scheme. It would be one thing if the Rams were a middle-of-the-road defense, but the results with it are eye opening. In those three games opposing quarterbacks have attempted 51 passes against the Rams Cover-2 resulting in only 31 completions, 266 yards, zero touchdowns, and two interceptions to show for it. That’s a quarterback rating of 58.1 against the likes Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston and Carson Palmer.

The Tampa-2 fell out of favor because it puts a lot of stress on the coverage abilities of linebackers — responsible for a wide expanse in the middle of the field — against a number of increasingly swift slot receivers and tight ends. Those players in the modern era can cover ground much faster than their predecessors. But this is not much of a problem for the Rams, however. In fact, it’s a perfect fit given their rangy linebacker duo of Alec Ogletree and Mark Barron can only be a good thing. It also alleviates the burden on the secondary after losing cornerback Janoris Jenkins and safety Rodney McLeod in the offseason.

Outside of the coverage aspect, there is still one last thing the defense requires to run properly: a dominant defensive line against both the run and pass. Against the run, keeping both safeties deep means there’s one fewer man in the box and the middle linebacker can’t play nearly as downhill because of his deep coverage responsibilities against play action. Against the pass the Tampa-2 requires defenders to drop to a spot instead of matching up with receivers, making the defense susceptible to spacing issues when certain route combinations pull defenders to the edges of their zones. To counteract this, receivers are jammed at the line of scrimmage to slow down that pulling effect, but the defensive line still needs to be getting home and forcing the ball out quickly, as big holes in the zone will eventually be created.

And that’s where the NFL’s best player comes in.

    Donald’s dominance

Lucky enough for the Rams they currently have the single most adept player in the NFL at rushing the passer and stopping the run. And with J.J. Watt out for the season it really isn’t close. The kind of impact defensive tackle Aaron Donald is having snap-to-snap from his spot exclusively between the tackles is unlike anything we’ve ever seen. When I talked about the Rams’ need to force the ball out quickly, it’s Donald who has done just that. He may only have two sacks, but he’s on pace for 100 total pressures on the season and has been unblockable in one-on-one situations. In 10 years of data, Watt’s 2014 season is the only one that’s cracked 100 pressures (119).

The biggest concerns about Donald coming out of college were if he’d be able to hold up against the run with his small stature (6-foot-1, 285 pounds) in the NFL. Those concerns have been proven dead wrong at this point. Even at sub-300 pounds, Donald could likely be one of the best nose tackles in the NFL if he wanted to be and he routinely plays there with 58 of his 232 snaps coming over the center this season. Through four games he’s made a stop on 14.5 percent of his snaps, the third highest rate in the NFL. As mentioned before, stopping the run with the safeties removed from the box is a difficult task for most teams in the NFL. So far, on the 29 carries against the Rams this year where that’s been the case, opposing offenses are averaging only 3.28 yards per carry.

On paper, the Rams defense got worse over the course of the last offseason. On the field, that hasn’t been the case. For that, Los Angeles has coaching and Aaron Donald to thank.

Without sustaining any/many significant injuries. (Big knock on wood!) I have been wanting to post this but have been afraid it might curse us. The injuries have plagued us for so many years, we are really due for some good luck here

With as much as our defense flies around its a modern miracle someone hasn’t gone down to “friendly fire”.

    – Big Exhale watching Robert Quinn shake it off…

    – Our entire starting OL has remained intact for 4 games in a row (including Saffold)! This has to be some sort of new record of late.

    – Brockers went down in all three of the first games and got back up and in the game. Did he go down again in game 4? I think he might have , can’t remember. But he’s still not out for the count. Thank god. Because there tends to be a gaping hole that we get gashed repeatedly when Cam Thomas #92 is in the game.

    – I can’t confirm, but it looks like Gurley wasn’t 100 percent after game 1. He looked closer to form last game. I’m just guessing here. But especially with Benny out there’s a lot riding on keeping Todd healthy no matter what. Point being is that any form Gurley abuse should be considered a Capital crime in the State of California. I’m sure Brown will be just fine for power right runs at 9 man boxes for a gain of two. I would love to see Gurley get spelled at least a series in each half.

    – I’ve seen Britt get up slow a couple times. He will lay out for a catch. He will try and get tough RAC yards and take extra contact (the polar opposite of Jarod Cook). Got to give him props. But he seems to pay for it every year. Our QB’s have made some throws to get Britt killed over the past couple of seasons. So far Keenum has put the ball on target over the middle for the most part on those slants and post routes to Britt. Those balls that are thrown late, high or behind a receiver are absolute killers.

    – Tree has been a physically imposing force at MLB. He plays nasty and through the whistle, even when he’s not making a tackle. Did you see the play he came up and absolutely destroyed (blew up) Fitzgerald trying to run block? He hit Fitz like a mack truck and drove him 5 yards back into the hole forcing the RB to bounce the run outside. I’m suprised Fitz wasn’t on concussion protocol after that. Lets hope Tree’s body can hold up to that style of play over a long season. The good thing is that he seems to go that speed on every play. In my experience in football you don’t get injured when your playing 100% and physical through the whistle. The time you get injured is when you let up for a second…

-TJ McDonald went out. But another one that shook it off. We dodged the bullet again here. It looked like GW rotated Barron back to Safety and Forrest in at LB when TJ went down.

    – Bennie is out. That’s bad. He knows “the chinese” offense. He’s our 3rd security blanket. Really bad week for it because the Bill’s defense brings all sorts of cleverly disguised and exotic twists, stunts and blitzes. Hint: quick draw play! My “suggestion” is to have an alternate kickoff returner when Benny returns healthy like Mike Thomas or Pharoah Cooper. The best suggestion is call “fair catch” and take the ball at the 25 yard line all the time.

    Coaching Twilight Zone

Jeff Fisher ? Who is this guy? Throwing caution to the wind and going for the killshot on fourth down instead of Greg the leg and a 56 yard FG? Did Arians and Fisher switch bodies? Granted it didn’t work. But haven’t we all been begging for those type of calls? 7 times out of 10 that’s how you beat a team like Arizona on the road. TD’s in the fourth quarter not FG’s. Was it the right call? I don’t know. I sure questioned it the way the game was going. Was is a massive shift in philosophy? Sure was. I’m pretty convinced Fisher is got the memo about two things after last year. The importance of TD’s vs FG ‘s and converting 3rd downs. Which is one reason I think the Rams liked Goff so much. His red zone ability was unrivaled in college.

The Rams fans coaching carousel fan favorite Bruce Arians got jacked at home by Fisherball and Case Keenum.

GW called a nice game. Brought pressure early on Palmer. The key was the Rams were hitting Palmer. Palmer does fine with pressure, not with hits.

You could probably watch any team play and pick out a dozen or so plays that look stupid after the fact. I’m not too worried about stuff like that. All I care about is seeing continual improvement. And I’ve seen that since the first San Fiasco game. Every week is getting better with in-game adjustments and situational play-calling. If anything, they have to start finding more creative ways to spring Gurley. If you can’t get him free by handing it off, then send him somewhere and throw it to him. THEN try and run it again. Gotta keep defenses guessing.

Keenum’s had better games with Houston, so it’s not his ceiling. We already know it’s his physical ceiling, but that’s not a bad thing. He can scramble & get yards, he can throw strikes 50+ yards, and he’s developing a chemistry with Britt & Quick, so who cares if he’s physically limited if he’s getting the job done and improving on a weekly basis.

As far as not seeing the open guy, that’s a criticism every fan offers about every QB not named Brady or Rodgers. And I can tell you with 100% certainty that I’ve seen Brady and Rodgers not identify an open receiver on occasion. I wouldn’t worry too much about that. Keenum is identifying the mismatches in pre-snap and sometimes he’ll lock onto that. Other times I have definitely seen him come off his first read and go through to his 3rd.

I’m just not worried about it. He’s attempting and hitting deep and intermediate shots now at a clip that some the heavy hitters in the league hit, so I can’t complain about it.

And that ridiculous escape act he pulled to get out of 2 sacks and hit an open receiver. Which also was called back – this time due to illegal man downfield. That was a tremendous play by him.

I’ve already said multiple times that I want Goff to play. But until he does, Keenum is the man.

    As for the challenges:

    JEFF FISHER
    Total Challenges (career): 79
    Overturned: 30
    Upheld: 49
    38% success rate.

    BILL BELLYFAT
    Total Challenges (career): 104
    Overturned: 42
    Upheld: 62
    40% success rate.

I listened yesterday to the Cardinals’ radio broadcast of the game.

Dave Pasch and Ron Wolfley do a great job. They’ve been working together for a while, and are smooth. Of course it’s a homer broadcast, but more than most I think they do a good job of crediting the other team when credit is due.

Wolfley is tuned in with the Cardinals and their coaching staff. He played for the Cardinals. When he says “the Cardinals want to do X” or “The Cardinals game plan is to do X”, I don’t think he’s speculating. He’s gotten it from the horse’s mouth.

And at the beginning of that broadcast, they both described the Rams as a one-dimensional offense where the whole key is to stop Gurley.
They talked about how the Cardinals were disappointed in their run defense against Buffalo, and how that had been a focus all week in practice.

Although they weren’t rude about it, it was very clear as the game began, that Gurley was the focus and that there was no fear or respect for Keenum. Then as the game went along, they began to acknowledge more and more that maybe Keenum was a little underestimated.

My point here is that other teams, at least until last Sunday, clearly still have the plan we’ve mentioned here multiple times. Stop Gurley. Maintain lane discipline. Make Keenum beat them. We’ve seen not just 8 but often 9 man boxes. At least once I saw Seattle with 10 men at the LOS and 1 safety deep.

This is to Gurley’s detriment and Keenum’s advantage. Not to take anything away from CK, but the defenses are handing it to him on a silver platter right now in an effort to deny Todd. That needs to be considered when evaluating their relative performances.

I think that if an opposing defense decided that the way to really stop the Rams was to stop Case Keenum, then things might be just a wee bit more difficult for him. Of course, that might open the running game in the way we’d like, which would help any QB on down and distance.

It’s just interesting when listening to that game on Card’s radio to hear the other guy’s perspective on our team. They respect the H*** out of the defense, especially Donald and Quinn. And they were certainly impressed again, I think, with TruJo. They definitely know that the Rams come to play physical ball. That Card offense got beaten up and down and they knew it.

The one optimistic thing you can say about the Rams offense is Todd Gurley can’t be this unproductive all season. He has had some tough matchups. The line blocking for him isn’t good, and defenses won’t respect Los Angeles’ passing game, but Gurley is too good to be averaging less than 3 yards a carry. That will change.

    I say…this will be a tough game.

A Ryan team will have exactly the kind of defense needed to challenge and frustrate both Gurley and Keenum at the same time.

Though the Rams D at home ought to be able to take it to the Bills offense.

A close, tough, physical, hard-fought game that will come down to which team makes a few big plays on offense or defense.

    Which…sounds familiar….

I would point out, however, that Nittany always steered more toward Amish Soccer when he was in Pennsylvania. I believe the Lancaster Butterchurners were his team.

Yeah, their first round draft pick in 2015 set an Amish Soccer League record for churns per kick. But this year through four games he’s only averaging 2 yards per stoltzfussgespielen. Of course, this year defenses are stacking the box with cord wood against him, so….

Yes yes yes there’s a diabolical plan and so forth.

But I have feelings too you know.

Fan blogger or not, I agree with Nittany that the Gurley point may be a good one.

Well, but, as we know, both you and Nittany are Eagles fans.

Nevertheless, it is possible that Gurley is not settling down enough in this offense. Point taken.

Even Eagles fans can make a point now and then.

This is the vid the original post is based on. Actually they spend more time discussing other things and the “DL in LA” remark was minor in their presentation:

    http://www.nfl.com/videos/los-angeles-rams/0ap3000000714702/Schrager-Rams-are-the-furthest-thing-from-Hollywood

In the vid they do say having a strong DL is not very Hollywood. But they spend more time talking about Gurley and his clutch plays Sunday. They say the Rams draw up smart gameplans that take advantage of what defenses do to contain Gurley.

Overall it’s hard to take the guy seriously though because he peppers what seems to be an informative article with errors and hyperbole.

Example, despite the toe tap, TruJo was out of bounds on his second int as explained by the head of NFL officiating, Mike Pereira. So the guy is just wrong.

With all due respect to PA, that’s because he’s a fan blogger. Author bio:

X writes for TST sometimes too. We discussed that venue–we tend to agree that you have to sort through a lot of mediocre stuff with them to find good stuff.

Only a fan blogger would call for a coach to be fired because of 2 challenges in one game. A game they won.

There were so many clutch plays in that game, it’s hard to give a full count.

So I will just note one thing.

Gurley had 3 receptions. All 3 of them were clutch plays. In fact right now I would say Gurley is their best receiver.

And have you ever before seen a back get hit, fall on the defender without touching the ground, leap up from there to his feet without his hands touching the ground, and keep running?

Man, I guess we’re seeing why trading 6 premium picks was do-able for a non-playoff team … because we have some passionate and talented individuals already in place on this team. I know it’s arguable … everything is … but I’m happy with the win for a number of reasons.

    The Great

    1) Brian Quick? Ummmm … I guess I’m happy no one took my advice and cut you. BOTH TD catches were crazy. LOL

    2) WHEW … Robert Quinn got up and was okay … seriously that may have been the best moment of the game, when he wasn’t seriously injured.

    3) Barron for the pro bowl …

    4) Trumaine earning his money …

    5) FINISHING. This is great experience … winning at the end of games.

    6) Gaines open field tackle of Fells IN BOUNDS.

    7) Donald’s sack/strip and overall presence. From every position on the D line? Around the corner? Honestly, the only position I don’t think he could play for us is punter. And that’s because Hekker is unreal and would beat him by a nose.

    8) Gurley’s STOP and DRIVE for the first down … I don’t care if his stat line is frustrating the fantasy world … he’s winning games for us.

    The Good

    9) Tavon’s punt return … honestly without the facemask that’s a TD.

    10) Kendricks looking like a boss.

    11) Case’s 2 plays that were called back for penalties.

    12) Cody Davis … the play in the end zone was the first time I’d seen him USE that 4.4 speed to make a play.

    13) Gaines being back. I like Troy Hill, and I think he has a future with us, but Gaines is a PLAYER.

    14) Matt Longacre with a run stuff and some pressures.

    15) Keenum deserves a lot of credit here. He still throws 3-4 balls a game that make me hide my face, but the TD to Quick on the back shoulder was amazing.

    The Bad

    16) Eugene … the rule is that you don’t hit the QBs head with any part of your body … you may not know this, but your HEAD is part of your body. In fact it’s likely the main part they don’t want you to hit the QB with.

    17) GRob you got out played, out physicalled by C Jones. You held because you HAD to … that’s not so good. I expect you to pull it together for specimens like him in the future. You’re not always going to be the physically superior player.

    18) I don’t know how we went from a running team to a team that can’t run block … but we better fix that.

    19) Did we give up 140 yards to another WR?

    20) Bennie’s concussion makes me sad. I want Coop on kickoffs next week and Malcolm running the ball.

    The Ugly

    21) Just this one thing … the team is going to be in close games … and this is 2 in a row where just getting ONE first down puts the game away, and we fail to do so. I trust our defense … but this seems to be something the offense needs to be able to do if we are going to keep winning.

Rams force five turnovers, continue to dominate on defense

    http://www.espn.com/blog/los-angeles-rams/post/_/id/31041/rams-force-five-turnovers-continue-to-dominate-on-defense

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Los Angeles Rams cornerback Trumaine Johnson leaped in the end zone, intercepted a pass from Arizona Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer and gifted the football to his father in the stands.

“And that second interception,” Johnson said, “I gave it to my mother.”

Johnson was referring to a catch he made near the sidelines in what ended up being the final drive in the Rams’ 17-13 win from University of Phoenix Stadium. Officials initially ruled an interception after Johnson caught a pass from Cardinals backup Drew Stanton just before going out of bounds. But replay showed that the back of his foot might have touched the very edge of the sideline, prompting an overturned call.

    Mom got the ball anyway.

“They’re not getting that ball back,” Johnson said. “That’s my mom’s. She’s taking that back to Stockton with her. Seriously. Y’all know that was a pick. Come on now.”

It would’ve marked the fifth turnover forced by the Rams’ defense on Sunday.

And on the very next play, they got it anyway, when T.J. McDonald caught Stanton’s desperation fling in the end zone as time expired.

It capped another dominant afternoon by the Rams’ defense, which has put its fingerprints all over the three-game winning streak that has kept the team in first place. There was also an interception by Mark Barron, his second in as many games. And a forced fumble by backup defensive lineman Dominique Easley. And a sack-fumble by Aaron Donald, who entered as the highest-graded interior lineman by Pro Football Focus despite not having recorded a sack in the first three weeks.

“It felt good,” Donald said. “Especially with a strip, too, to give it back to the offense. I know those plays are going to come. I just have to play my game.”

The Rams’ defense recorded six quarterback hits, three sacks — one of which gave Palmer a concussion that took him out of the game midway through the fourth quarter — and four tackles for loss. A vaunted defensive line continually created pressure, just like it did over the last two weeks. And a secondary that allowed 405 yards through the air last Sunday held its own against a menacing passing attack, benefiting from the return of cornerback E.J. Gaines.

“We responded,” Johnson said. “We kept everything in front of us. That was the whole plan this week.”

The Rams’ three wins have been defined by signature defensive plays.

In the 9-3 win over the Seattle Seahawks in Week 2, there was the Alec Ogletree strip and fumble with the Seahawks 27 yards away from the game-winning touchdown. In the 37-32 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, there were two from Robert Quinn, a forced fumble that led to a 77-yard score and a game-ending tackle of Jameis Winston.

In Week 3, there were too many to single out.

“We’re a physical defense that’s swarming; a defense that has opportunities to make a lot of plays,” said Donald, who finished with 1 1/2 sacks and four quarterback hits. “It showed up today.”

I remember Tarkenton making that sort of play against the Rams countless times.

And they were never called back.

    #!*&!#@ Robinson!

He seemed to think CK was going to run.

If you think about it GR has never played for a qb before who did do that kind of Tarkenton number, or could do it.

Said one Rams assistant coach: “Wentz turns 24 later this year. Goff is 21. This is a lot to take in for a 21-year-old. We said in our draft meetings, if you had to play a guy right away, you’d probably take Wentz, cause he played in a pro-style system and is older. The whole point with Jared is that he doesn’t have to play right away. We love the kid.”

    Interesting remark.

A bunch of stuff—21 Points from Ram-AZ game

1.Every single player appears to be offering something on defense:
Easley and Cam Thomas are doing their thing, EJ Gaines playing with big brains and good ability. Mo Alex didn’t seem to make a huge error this game, and creating terror. Cody Davis looks like he knows what he is doing—and he ain’t no Craig Dahl. TJ Mac looks to fit in better than ever before (& Williams is using his within his talent). Westbrook and LongAcre making some plays. IF Sims doesn’t rush hard and hit Palmer high, we may not be 3-1….he was doing his job with passion as usual—
    2. Gurley no space, but made a key 1st down so we could TD, not a FG for a tie.

    3. Case looked in command, though missed a few simple throws for
    4. DBs look like they know what they are doing this year, and even though they are still 10 yards off the line, they know the system and it is working. I always knew they had the talent. I see why Greg Williams doesn’t them in 1 on 1’s too much.
Our D held AZ to a FG when they had first down on the 4…that is the game, right there. Awesome D with great moving parts. They are so unpredictable.

    5. O line has problems in the run game because it is so obvious to the Defenses that the WRs can’t beat anyone consistently, so they aren’t afraid (giving up a 18 yard slant is no big deal once a half), and so defenses just play the run like it is 3rd and 1 every down. Arizona crashed down with LBs and the house a lot of the time. TE would help this a bit, I think. I know this is simplistic…maybe I am wrong. Also, I can’t think of a worse run blocking O line in the last 20 years (incl Colts crappy O line with no talent).
I believe in these lineman as run blockers, so hopefully this is worked out….so we can become a Fisher type of team (as long as he is coaching). Right now, all 4 games had very substandard run blocking most of the time.
    6. Overcoming!—Despite so many penalties, the Rams still are winning these games.
All these guys: Brockers, Ogletree, Tavon, Barnes, Quick,GRob, TJ, Tru Jo are playing with 1-2 years of more intelligence and it is showing.

    7. Quick was impressive on the fade, and he made that 65 yard TD. Without him, maybe we don’t win these last 2 games—Hard to believe.
    8. Tavon got his finger tips on a long one. Keep throwing that to him. He is getting closer

    9. Kendricks dropped 1….for our offense all these 6-8 yard patterns need to have a 100% catch rate, not 75%. When is Higbee gonna look like he did in that Dallas game. This year?
    10. Britt is ok, but we still need a guy like Crabtree-relatively cheap veteran who can move chains.

    11. This team really is a team; every guy is doing his role.
    12. Greg the leg looks so much different. So many balls aren’t pounded. Like the difference between a wedge shot and and 3 iron from Tiger.

    13. GROB- hmmm, don’t know what to say. Hasn’t cost a game this year, yet.
    14. Goff was the 2nd QB again? It might not be this year if Case keeps doing what he is doing. Case is not the big problem….though his throws flutter so he can’t hit so many balls in tight coverage.

    15. The end of the first half, 3rd and 3…..in the conservative world I run the ball….Gives AZ 35 less seconds…and keeps that TD a FG.
    16. I like Mike Thomas’ patterns, maybe he can replace Britt next year. Higbee would really change some things, too.

    17. Coaching- Usually a fan, through multiple viewings of 4-6+ games can predict his teams moves on particular down and distance. I can’t on defense at all….especially that last play of the game on the TJ Mac int. Williams can do this because the players know the system. Janoris Jenks would be a great player on this team, but we have so many guys who know the system, we don’t need him (and his $12 mill a year)….at least so far we don’t.
    18. Aaron Donald looks better than any DT I remember. John Randle and Sapp are two of the great pass rushers (from last 30 years), and to my eyes Donald looks better. Don’t forget that guards, now, pass block a lot better than 20+ years ago. The game is all about throwing and having systems. Donald beats the system.

    19. Quinn looks great, however I don’t see the inside move much…is his back 100%?
    20. Barron, Ogletree, TJ Mac and Mo Alex maybe the best players as a group that Fisher has ever had at those positions…I don’t mean physically only, but knowing the system and attacking. I have watched some old 2002 Titans and this defense looks as physical, with much less 1 on 1 corner play, but much more chess players.

    21. Ogltree, Mo Alex and EJ Gaines gotta be paid to stay, I think. EJ is still not all healthy, I am sure, but by the end of the year I hope he is.

All opinion, and not all is correct, I am sure

Oh to be able to play that 9’ers game over again.

At season’s end the Rams will be sitting at 15-1 and looking to make history but for that anomalous blip at the start of the year.

    I know what you’re thinking, “14-2? Possibly. 13-3? Most assuredly. But 15-1?”

    Bet the house.

    15-1.

You know what’s looking like now with the SF game?

    It was a wake-up call.

New team leadership. They acted dramatically on it, called a players only meeting, and they turned that game into a wake-up.

You know what it’s also looking like. The offensive changes were enough so that they were essentially learning it again. Less carry over from last year. Now they are picking it up and getting in stride. More 2nd nature.

    And the winners are:

The Rams don’t have Cook. They have a chance.

Yes they can and they will.

I’m gonna pretend like they’ve turned the corner
    and say:

    Rams – 24
    Cards – 21

When absolutely everyone is picking against the Rams and they are given no shot of winning, that’s when they win. Look it up. It is known.

    They get a cake.

    Plus, pie for everyone.
