Rams Sign Bills C Ryan Groy To Offer Sheet

The Rams made a move late tonight to potentially add a starting center, signing Bills RFA Ryan Groy to an offer sheet, Mike Rodak and Adam Caplan of ESPN.com report. It’s a two-year offer sheet, per Rodak and Caplan.

The Bills gave Groy and original-round tender and would not be entitled to draft compensation if they elect not to match since Groy was undrafted. Buffalo has five days to match the offer sheet. Groy was drawing interest as an RFA last week from teams who believe he could start at center or guard for them.

Groy would be expected to become the Rams’ starting center, a status he does not presently occupy with the Bills. Currently, the Rams house fourth-year player Demetrius Rhaney as their only pure center.

Eric Wood is the Bills’ starting center, although after a season-ending injury in November, Wood ceded his starting spot to Groy for the Bills’ final seven games last season. He’d previously started just three in his three-year career. Wood, though, is entering a contract year and will turn 31 on Saturday. Groy will turn 27 in September.

The Bills saw an RFA decision last year come back to bite them in allowing Chris Hogan to sign with the Patriots. Groy did grade out better than Wood in the opinion of Pro Football Focus last season, but Wood has started 104 games for the Bills since 2009 and made the Pro Bowl in 2015. So, it will be interesting to see how the Bills proceed here since Groy, too, is entering a contract year.

The Los Angeles Rams have signed DB Kayvon Webster to a contract details here.

Webster spent four years with the Denver Broncos after being drafted in the 3rd round (90th overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft out of South Florida. The last of those two years, Webster was a reserve for former Broncos and new Rams Defensive Coordinator Wade Phillips. Webster’s experience under Phillips should serve him well in the Rams’ secondary rotation.

There is a bit of question as to where Webster will play. He played safety in high school and then moved up to cornerback at USF before staying there with the Broncos. He did offer safety backup skills and was reported to take over for Rahim Moore when he left, but the Broncos ultimately signed former Rams S Darian Stewart to fill the role.

So while he has cornerback experience under Phillips, he also offers stop-gap safety skills. Having lost S Rodney McLeod to free agency last season and looking at S T.J. McDonald likely heading out, there’s room at safety on the roster. At cornerback, the Rams lost CB Janoris Jenkins to the market a year ago, and CB Trumaine Johnson might be traded away as he sits on his second consecutive franchise tag.

With the 2017 NFL Draft in front of us and the full free agent window still open, we may have to see where Webster gets slotted in during OTAs.

For now, there’s a new Ram in the secondary.

Week 17 altercation was last straw for Texans and Osweiler

So when did the Texans decide it was time to move on from quarterback Brock Osweiler despite a contract that pays $16 million guaranteed in 2017? The decision was made in the aftermath of an incident that occurred on the first day of the calendar year.

January 1. Texans at Titans. Backup-turned-starter Tom Savage took a hit on a quarterback sneak during the first play of the second quarter and was removed for a concussion evaluation. Starter-turned-backup Brock Osweiler entered the game.

Confusion emerged during the second quarter as to whether Savage had been cleared to return to action. At halftime, Savage got the news: He was being shut down for the day.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Savage became very upset, knocking things around in the locker room and otherwise making a ruckus about having his status jeopardized by a doctor’s decision to keep him from playing. At or about the same time, coach Bill O’Brien informed Osweiler that he’d be finishing the game.

Osweiler, per the source, reacted negatively, telling O’Brien in the visiting coach’s office at Nissan Stadium in Nashville that he’s only playing Osweiler because O’Brien needs him. [Editor’s note: That’s sort of how football depth charts work.] An argument ensued, voices were raised. At one point, it’s believed that Osweiler got up to walk away and O’Brien threw out an arm to stop him. That prompted Osweiler to act as if he were being “held hostage,” a claim that he would repeat (per the source) in the days after the game.

And that was that for Osweiler in Houston. Following that incident, the team was determined to find a way to move on from him.

Rumors of an incident of some sort had been percolating for weeks. Both O’Brien and Osweiler downplayed talk of a loud argument in the days after the game. Following the hot potato trade that sent Osweiler and a second-round pick to Cleveland, former NFL defensive back Bryant McFadden said in an appearance on 120 Sports that Osweiler and O’Brien had a “physical confrontation that got ugly.”

“It was physical,” McFadden said. “It was physical. The players and coaches had to restrain O’Brien and Brock.”

Both the Texans and Osweiler’s agent, Jimmy Sexton, declined to comment on McFadden’s claims. Based on the information PFT has obtained, it seems that the incident was mildly physical at worst.

Consider it objectively. Osweiler is six-seven, and he was wearing full pads. O’Brien is considerably shorter than that and, unlike the conventional game-day attire in baseball, was not wearing pads and a uniform.

Whatever did (or didn’t) happen between the two of them, Osweiler’s perceived overreaction to the incident was, we’re told, the moment the Texans decided to move on from Osweiler.

Woods was primarily the Bills’ No. 2 receiver over the past four seasons. He has yet to reach 700 yards in a single season and he only reached the end zone once last year. But he’s still about a month away from turning 25, so the Rams believe there’s upside. They love his ability to sell routes, particularly on in-breaking ones 15 yards down the field. They love his aptitude for playing on the outside and in the slot. And they love his physicality.

Woods, listed at 6-foot, believes that flexibility, coupled with his highly regarded skills as a blocker, can help running back Todd Gurley get going on the ground after a horrific second season.

LOS ANGELES — Free-agent cornerback Kayvon Webster is visiting the Los Angeles Rams, and given his ties to new defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, he might be a fit.

Webster was a third-round pick by the Denver Broncos in 2013, but spent the last three years playing behind two of the game’s best corners in Aqib Talib and Chris Harris. Webster, 26, has played in only 247 defensive snaps since 2014, tied for 10th among Broncos defensive backs during that time. But the Rams have roughly $15 million to spend on unrestricted free agents after cutting ties with four key veterans on Thursday night and could use more depth at corner.

Webster tweeted Sunday about his forthcoming flight to L.A., which the Rams acknowledged.

The Rams have been shopping their primary cornerback, Trumaine Johnson, who is set to play a second straight season under the franchise tag. But even if they keep him, their depth at the position is questionable. Their No. 2 corner, E.J. Gaines, has been limited to 10 starts over the last two years. Behind him are Lamarcus Joyner, who’s better as a slot corner, a former sixth-round pick who was plucked off waivers, Blake Countess, and two undrafted free agents, Troy Hill and Mike Jordan.

Webster, 5-foot-11, has recorded 64 solo tackles in his career, but 59 of them came in his first two seasons. He barely played in 2015-16, while Phillips ran a Broncos defense that was the game’s best each season. The Eagles and Dolphins have reportedly been interested in Webster, as well.

The Rams also are in need of a starting center and could use more help at receiver, tight end, defensive line, linebacker and safety. But the free-agent market is still in play for them.

“You’ve put a dent in your budget, so you also have to work within the constraints of your budget,” Rams general manager Les Snead said Friday. “But usually after the first couple of days [of free agency], like we’ve had, you take a step back and go, ‘Let’s regroup.’ We had a Plan B, but you also take a step back and say, ‘Was somebody else out there that is still standing that we weren’t expecting and can help us?’ That’s kind of what we’re doing now.”

He can read defenses , find the soft spot in zones . He has great hands and body control plus he is a great blocker and he is just 24 (25 in April).

From what I have known and seen, I agree with all that. He doesn’t have much of a high-end upside in terms of just raw physical talent, but then, the whole point of this discussion was that you can get #1 WR production out of a guy who has the things you list but not necessarily the high-end skills.
