I like the three back system,
    as long as there are
    three good backs.

    These guys aint exactly
    Csonka, Kiick and Mercury Morris,
but they looked good against Dallas.

What I like about Davis this year….very high pocket awareness. Also, he can read defenses and he knows this offense like the back of his hand. He knows what he’s doing out there.

You know it;s interesting about pocket awareness. He had absolutely none when he came in cold in the Vikes game. In fact I thought most if all the sacks he took were on him. Then he’s better (though the Vikes have more of a defense than Dallas or Tampa). You know what HE attributes it to? Staying in rhythm. Dropping, planting, throwing. He said that all week after the Vikes game, the coaches stressed that — stay in rhythm. Yet we see it as this quality of the qb’s psyche. Meanwhile, on top of it, to drop and throw you have to trust your receivers. If you don’t you have to compensate somehow for it, for example by bailing on the pocket or holding the ball waiting for a play. It really is amazing how much we put on the qb that isn’t really the qb.

Well i dont know exactly what any of us means by ‘pocket awareness’
but i know that this kid has made three or four “escape and throw” plays
that were impressive. I love it. The ‘extend the play” thing.

Its an attribute. A quality. I like it.

He also throws INT’s over the middle.
I hope that is not an attribute. I dont like it.

The level of disparity is so blatant that it defies logical explanation.

Look at the pictures. The refs can’t say they didn’t see it when they are clearly watching the QB for “points of emphasis” like Personal Fouls and Unnecessary Roughness and Roughing The Passer.

It’s either GROSS negligence or WILLFUL negligence.

Either way, the NFL is in a sorry state.

And it’s not just the Rams.

Anyone see the Pats/Raider game? The Raiders should have taken that game to overtime, but the Raiders were given the game when on the final Raiders TD endzone drive, an OL got called for a holding that’s the farthest thing from holding. It was a textbook pancake block.

Here’s the problem. This isn’t like the replacement refs where they made mistakes and looked lost. These calls are specifically influencing the outcomes of games and it’s not even subtle anymore. This is overt. It’s like the league is panicking. “Oh God! We can’t let the Cowboys go 1-2 Not to the Rams! They’re down 21-0! Shit! Step in. You know what to do…”

And as stupid, lame and as far-fetched as that sounds, it explains things FAR better than any of the idiotic stammering, hemming and hawing and flop sweating the Refs have done in games where these calls have happened.

I half expect some NFL lackey to break loose with a memo at this point…

There is hubris in the NFL and where there is hubris, there is soon to be a fall from great heights…

Well, the Refs missed a call against the Rams that would have overturned the first Dallas turnover.

I thought the call against Simms for roughing was wrong, but i could see how a Ref might miss
that one, since it was close, and in real time that one might be hard to see.

I dunno Mack, I thought the key to the game was
    the Wells bonehead-play,
the McCleod? bonehead play on Dez,
    the 4th and inches Failure
    and AustinD’s panicky-INT, and
    JJ’s Pass-Interference on Dez.

Lots of great plays by the Rams,
but lots of bonehead ones, too.

327 yard passer with a 98 QB ratiing and 3 TD passes

    121 rushing yards.

    I’ll take that any day.

If we can get the defense squared away this could still be a hell of a season.

    Grits

Yes, the offense has been intriguing. But Dallas had a huge weakness
at Linebacker (two starters out) and Brian S and Austin D exploited it
masterfully. But I still wanna see how the O performs against the tough
NFC West defenses. So far, the offense is cause for optimism.

I’ve only watched the first half so far, but Austin D was
    impressive in the first half.

I don’t see Fisher on the hotseat yet. I think he/his staff has to do something about the mental mistakes and penalties though. I know the Rams are a young team, but I need to see some improvement.

Well, I’d say the Eagles game is
    a “big game.” Yes?

    How will the Fisher-script
    look?

Will it be a story of improvement
    and adjustment like last year.

Or will the Rams defense be mistake-prone
and the team look undisciplined and lost.

    Or, some other story.

Nothing would surprise me at this point.

I mean, it almost looks like the Quarterback
issue is the LEAST of their problems — who

LMU93 — The Little Things Add Up

The 2nd 4th and 1 call.. Good decision to go for it. Bad call on a slow developing counter play..

    Two bad PIs..

A terrible call on the roughing the QB on Sims. Just an awful call..

Wells botched snap. He continues to be the weak link of their offense.

The drop by Cook.. I knew right there they were losig that game.

But to me THE MOST baffling thing about this team is having one QB sack in 3 games.. I don’t know what is happening there.. They consistently rushed/blitzed with 5-6 guys and got absolutely nowhere. Stonewalled most plays. As bad as the blown coverage was on the TD to Bryant the lack of pass rush hung them out to dry too. This team isn’t 1-2 because Bradford got hurt. They’re 1-2 mainly because the defense hasn’t performed nearly up to expectations. The run defense was MUCH better yesterday- in fact almost dominant apart from the 20 and 44 yard runs. But again the lack of almost any pressure on opposing QBs is baffling to me….

I’ll also say I really like what Davis has done at QB. The kid deserves a ton of credit. He’s limited but he’s tough, he’s emotional, gutsy, the team responds to him, and he moves around really well. I think Bradford gets sacked 5-6 times yesterday in that game.. I hope Fisher sees the offense flying around Davis and lets him keep playing.

yeah. i actually had just posted something similar. davis playing well and all is great. but he’s been bolstered by the running game.

bradford played very well when he had that running game going. so people shouldn’t be going way overboard with this. i wanna see how he performs when it’s all on him.

Well it sounds like we kinda know how
he performs when its “all on him” —
he throws INTs. A lot like Romo,

No QB controversy here: Austin Davis should start for Rams
    By Nick Wagoner

Even after Davis went 30-of-42 for 327 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions in the Rams’ 34-31 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, Fisher wouldn’t waver.

“No, I’ve stood behind that decision,” Fisher said.

Given some time to reflect on the upcoming bye week, perhaps Fisher will give it more thought….

I dont really care who starts — I think either choice is reasonable.
And if the starter falters, Fisher can always
    bring in the other QB.

The thing is, it looks like Austin D had a good running game
going today. (yes?) I’d like Wagoner to show me
the numbers on ram-QBs when the running game
    has been clicking.
And the QB-ratings when the running game
    has NOT been clicking.

Hill…uses a quicker release to throw with more velocity than Davis. That’s what Fisher and Schottenheimer see daily.

First, I think this is a nice problem to have.

But…to me, it’s important to have a sense of what each qb can do.

Near as we can tell so far, it seems entirely plausible that Hill can make some of the throws Davis can’t.

I dont have any doubt there’s throws Hill can make
that Austin D cant. Hill has a quicker release
    and a stronger arm.
Austin D has better mobility right now,
    certainly.
    They both seem like gamers,
    to me.

Austin D had the benefit of a running game in Tampa.
The Rams had zero-running game vs. the Vikings.
To me, that makes a world of difference in how
the QB is going to look.

Laram (on the Davis to Pettis pass)

Nice play design forcing a nickel sub-package, one on one coverage, but poor execution by Austin Davis IMO.

Watch how fast Goldson reads the play backside and gets to Pettis front side of the formation.. He totally ignored Cook running right across his face.

When you see a safety break-off that quickly he’s either read a tendency, or the qb has led him with his eyes, where the ball is going.

IMO had Austin froze him in the middle, Pettis possibly scores on the play.

    OR…

Moved Goldson and Brian Quick backside has one on one coverage and probably has a TD.

Nice play but all things considered, it could have been better.

If I’m Shotty that’s a teaching moment and a play I comeback to.

    Exactly.

He’s accurate which is great, but man
that looks like a popgun arm to me.
On the bomb that Quick dropped it looked
like Austin D really loaded up and heaved it.
It looked like it took everything he had
    to make that throw.

I’d like to take Bradford’s arm and
torso and attach them to Austin D’s
    knees.

I dunno. Maybe Davis will be a Montana.
