I had the game on DVR and watched the first half.

This was great for rewinding and slo motion.

    Some thoughts:

    On first Packers drive:

Lacy’s first run. There were 4 missed tackles. 4. It’s not that no one could have made a play–they just didn’t. Also–Roberson was blocked for a full 10 yards downfield.

    Rodger’s scramble.

Pressure by Quinn and Long, Landford was engaged with two blockers. Donald should have made the play but could not shed his blocker. He was still blocked long after Rodgers was past him. The linebackers were not there to make a play. Donald had a poor game, really. Invisible. He has to get off blocks better. I’m sure Williams will do some things with him to help.

On the quick pass to the sideline, the corner was waaaay off the receiver. It was free yards. The corner was 7 yards off. it was Johnson. On the next play he was turned by the receiver–couldn’t recover. Result: first down. Easy.

On Cobb’s first down the safeties were way off. Mcgee also missed the tackle.

On the next pass–Armstrong slipped. Lacy–first down.

On Lacy’s next run–gaping hole(could have driven a truck through it) and Donald again could not get off block.

On Rodger’s T.D.–he actually had several options. No receiver’s touched off the line.

I really don’t like the corners 7 yards off the line on first down–all the time. The receivers come off untouched. I just don’t get it.

    The Rams first drive:

Packers clearly control the line. They also don’t miss tackles.

The CBs are tight on the line on first.

On runs the Rams line was blown up. No where for Stacy to go.

Packers finally play off receivers on 1st and 25.

It was a shame on the Britt pass. Sam was just a little off.

Once he refines his timing they should have things with these receivers. Quick looks great and Britt will make plays. Faulk made a good point on the pass to Tavon crossing. If Sam had waited until Tavon cleared the LBers face tavon probably would have been gone. Hitting him before that allowed the LBer to make the play. Give Austin space.

But Sam played well. I feel good about that.

All in all–just a sloppy performance by the Rams. The O-line looked helpless at times. The defense did not tackle well.

    Bright spots:

    The receivers.

    Bradford.

Westbrooks. That guy has made this team.

Sims. He could start for a lot of teams. We’re lucky.

Have to watch the second half.

Didn’t see the game yet. Had to work so it’s on the DVR for today. Did watch the highlights.

But this is typical of the Rams and preseason under Fisher. Last year they dropped the first 3 games in preseason and looked particularly bad in the first two losing to Cleveland and Green Bay (19-7–not much difference)before showing some spark against Denver even though they lost. In 2012 they were 2-2.

What concerns me most is if a sort of lazy…keep it really basic sort of pre-season will lead to a slow start of the regular season. Last year 1-3 and 2012 they broke even at 2-2. I think it’s really vital this year that they begin the season sharp and have a good first four games. A slow start won’t cut it.

I understand that they are looking at a lot of people, that there are injuries, that they aren’t scheming for teams. But I would like to see a little sharper play.

The last thing I’m going to do is freak out over the preseason. I get that it’s preseason. And my main concern is the health of the team.

Other teams just look sharper to me.

Seattle’s D looked pretty active and alive against San Diego. Rodgers and the Packers clearly looked interested and sharp. I’d just like to see a little more from the Rams in these games–a little less sloppiness.

Individually. LOVE the Quick highlight. I can only hope this is a great sign for the season. That was not an easy catch. Good hands, body control, awareness and effort.

Bradford looked good. Glad to see him back and healthy. Still would love to see some more deep balls in the pre season–just to work on it–but it is his first game back so we’ll see next week.

I hope the run defense gets better soon. I have flashbacks to Dallas and look at game one and Peterson and get scared. Very scared.

I try not to read much of anything into preseason but I do hope they play next week with a little more urgency. I’d like to see them a bit more prepared for game #1 when it counts.

I’ve watched a lot of preseason games, and so far the refs are calling a lot of defensive holding on the DBs. Especially on slants and double moves when a WR runs by his guy. If the DB gets “grabby” at that point, he gets a flag.

I’m not certain how all of this is gonna play out. It could have a huge impact on the game. So many DBs grab guys on slants and quick look-in routes. If the refs keep throwing flags at this rate, they’re gonna break some kind of record.

I’m also seeing a lot of “hands to the face” calls against the D-lineman. Even if the hands just go to the helmet for a second, they’re getting a flag.

I watched a few plays from the Seahawks/Chargers game yesterday and maybe they were just sending a message to the Seahawks but if some of those calls were illegal contact then the DB simply has no chance. There will be a LOT more TDs this year. Also–I noticed that “hands to the face” call a lot, and they called that during the Rams game a few times.

If they make these calls during the regular season fans will be screaming and games will take 6 hours to play.

They may call them more now–and even a little more during the season, but I don’t see what’s happening now happening then.

I think it’s just a level of frustration. It just doesn’t seem that he will ever be a regular contributor for this team. The pick looked like a steal considering his college success. But things haven’t worked out so well.

What, exactly, are the advantages of a wide 9 other than maybe giving the DE more room to work and not get caught in a crowd?

It really puts pressure on the linebackers, it seems, to cover a lot of ground and if they don’t get it done you are really open to big runs.

I mean–lots of teams do this, I get it. There has to be a big payoff by putting the DE out there–or at least a lot of NFL teams really believe that, but you’d better have linebackers that can fill the gaps and make plays on that runner(and not miss tackles) or that running back is in the secondary.

    BLASPHEMY!

    You bunch of heathens!

I am a firm football traditionalist who would love to bring back those leather helmets. If I COULD change anything about the extra point I would put it closer…maybe even behind the goal post.

First they take away kick-offs, than extra points, than touchdowns.

    What is this soccer?

Having said that, it does make things more interesting with the extra point back further.

Just saw this today and enjoyed it very much. It was exactly what I expected. And the great 70s music just elevated the film.

If I have any criticism it would be that in spots it got a little too cute and sentimental. I liked the harder edge. But it didn’t mess up the film. It was a fun time.

I did see Donald get some penetration on some plays. I saw him handled on others. Overall the Saints lines beat the Rams lines.

So it’s true–starters were out. It’s also true that the Saints had people sitting. It’s hard to look at the 1st preseason game and determine what–if anything–it all means. But in THIS game, with THESE players…they did get sort of manhandled by the Saints line. Should that be a concern? I don’t know–but it’s going to at the very least be tough to watch. And of course the expectation for this defense is huge.

But Chris Long even said that they kind of sucked against the run and they would fix it.

    I hope so.

But I’m not panicking in any way. I do want to see a better performance in game #2.

    No–I demand a better performance.

Maybe that’s what this team is waiting for, my demands, I don’t know.

But I want a better looking defense in game #2–and even if it’s this group of players–I want to see improvement.

I hold my self to the same standard as a fan–sitting there eating my cheese puffs and drinking a nice summer brew. I was in mid-season form already. I was sharp. My comments to the tele3vision were spot on: Holy s@#$! Do the Saints have vaseline on their uniforms?” “Hey, Brian Quick…shove that a#%&*@# out of the way and go get the ball!” “Really, Greg the Leg? Or should I say, Greg the BROKEN leg?” “YES!!!!!!! Sted-MAAAAAAAAAAN!!!!!!!”

So yes–I need more next time.

    Just some quick observations:

The Saints are winning the battle of the lines…offense and defense. This reminds me of the Dallas game. I know Brockers did not play but this was not a good performance. The Rams have one go to receiver and he is suspended for four games. Shaun Hill was okay but the receivers have to adjust to poor passes. Gilbert looks mostly lost.

Yes, it is early. But neither the offense or defense look particularly sharp. The Saints look more prepared.m

    Bright spots?

    Michael Sam.

    Joyner.

Robinson(some mistakes but he also made some plays)

I hope they come out much sharper the next game.

Johansson wasn’t good but it wasn’t really her fault. Her part was the same ol’ hackneyed role you often see in sci-fi movies such as this. As she gained access to more and more of her brain she became more automaton-like. Her character loses her depth and humanity. Much of her role involved staring blankly and speaking in a flat, emotionless tone. I find it boring that sci-fi movies always depict beings with higher intelligence as being Vulcan-like. It’s like they assume a sense of joy or wonder or sadness could not coexist in a super-smart being.

This is probably the price to pay for going into a transhuman existence. If you believe in the idea that for the species to survive in the long run it will have to somehow morph into a sort of computer–less a carbon based life form but something that can still hold the general “stuff” of humans there probably has to be a merging point. There may have to be a compromise on what that would be.

Okay–yes–yes–I’m making excuses for a terrible movie. It’s early–I just had some Frosted Flakes and my mind drifted off to the transhuman movement. It’s absurd anyway. When computers take over they won’t have any need for us anyway. But since this already may be a simulation who knows?

P.S. This was written only using 1.3 percent of my brain.

Wells has not played a full season the past two years. Long has not played a full season the last three years. Saffold has not played a full season the last three years.

    That is a concern.

What is the depth of the o-line? For them to be successful they have to hope that those back-ups can step in and get the job done. It’s critical.

It’s not that this can’t be a very strong o-line with the starters healthy but they haven’t been healthy. And another of your main guys is in his rookie season. There will be a learning curve.

    Sam just can’t take hits.

    So the o-line concerns me.

The front seven is so strong on defense that the secondary will be helped by that.

I’m not saying it isn’t a concern but there is nothing to cover for the o-line if they get hurt.

Several years ago, when the Eagles held training camp at Lehigh I went up just to watch an NFL Camp. I don’t know if they are all the same but it seemed to me that there was just a lot of different things going on at the same time. I mean–there was always SOMETHING happening. Either it was individual drills–linemen, special teams guys, offense, etc. Then after awhile they got into running certain plays in offensive and defensive sets and the players worked hard. I was right next to Hollis Thomas and the guy was a giant. He was doing one on one drills and all I could think of was that I didn’t want to get hit by a guy like that.

This was the first year that T.O. was there and the crowd went nuts when he walked onto the field. The players aren’t in FULL game face. They were laughing and joking with fans and there were autograph sessions. Also some radio stations were there. It’s a lot to juggle. A lot is happening and these teams have to be very co-ordinated.

The problem at Lehigh was getting a good spot. The place was jammed and if you wanted to watch the offense vs. defense drills you had to get there early and get a good spot in the bleacher section or you wouldn’t see much. Still, I saw a lot of the individual drills.

It was interesting but obviously I’d rather go to Rams camp.

As soon as I heard the “we only use 10 percent of our brain” nonsense I sort of tuned that movie out. I guess it’s a great plot device for a film but I’m not big on bad science.

Don’t get me wrong–I don’t mind stretching things. I’m sure Chris Nolan’s “Interstellar” will stretch things but at least things like “wormholes” are theoretically possible or even things like shared dreams in “Inception” may one day become a reality.

But to start off with the old wives tale of the 10 percent of the brain thing and go from there? Eh.

Thanks for the wonderful report, Jimi.

I am so excited to watch this team and particularly the defense. I can’t imagine what Donald will do for an already great line.

I am still just a bit concerned about the secondary but if THAT clicks? Dominance.

QBs will be forced to take quick drops and throw quick passes. It will be more difficult to set up longer throws for the opposition. There should be a lot of opportunities to make plays for the DBs.

Yes–9-7 seems to be a very reasonable prediction. Vegas seems to have them at an over/under of 7.5 so they expect pretty much last year’s season.

    I–ever the optimist–see better.

But will 9-7 make the playoffs?

    I don’t think so.

So this season could be exciting, encouraging and fun. But the fun will probably end come playoff time as a weak division team sneaks in for the last wild card at 10-6.

That’s my prediction. I’m sticking to it. At least until the first pre-season game.

I didn’t mean to sound like I was trying to “boil it down to one play”. I just have a lousy memory for specific plays. That one stood out to me. Not seeming to know what to do with Tavon Austin, going away from the run when it’s working–having Fisher have to basically decide they were going back to the run when the pass happy stuff was a total failure, an inability to adjust in games. Does Shotty impress me? Not particularly. Is it ALL his fault? No.
