That’s a good point, although they probably won’t need any receivers against the 9ers, anyway. So that gives them an extra week. Getting the 9ers first is kind of like starting the season with a bye. From what I’ve heard, they aren’t even strong enough to stand up during the national anthem.

    😆

1’s looked good. Cant help but wonder if Gurley woulda helped to get at least one TD… I thought Fisher had said that Gurley was gonna get some reps.

Keenum looks like the best candidate for opening day, to me anyways. Would be a mistake to put Goff in too early, he just does not look as ready/confident/composed/fluid as Keenum. Those sternum hits can be deadly. Fisher oughta send someone into the back equipment room to see if Bulgers old rib-cage pad is still usable.

WR drops still plague these guys. And why, oh why, is getting flagged on Kick Off and Punt Returns an automatic?

Yeah, good article. Liked the passion exhibited. Cant remember hearing about JL55 getting in oeoples face too much. I dont like total nut jobs who scream at everybody, getting in peoples face all the time, but a little passion used judiciously is good to see.

I just watched a segment where Cowherd reacts to news that Goff is the third best QB on the Ram depth chart. He reminds everyone that Freshmen QB’s are rarely expected to lead their teams the first year in HS and College ball. He says that Prescott was behind the best OLine in football and only saw two exotic blitzes and threw a pick that was called back on one of them. His point is that Dak’s success means nothing and Goff’s struggles are to be expected. He continued by saying that Goff will win in time based on his thinking pre and post snap as opposed to athleticism and compared him more to Brady and Luck as opposed to how others rate rookie QB’s like RGIII, Vick, and Vince Young based on athleticism alone. Cowherd is preaching patience and that in time Goff will be a good QB.

    Well put. 👍

BTW, NERams, when the Rams were considering moving from So Cal to STL, the Rams also considered Hartford and Baltimore. The Baltimore Rams or the Hartford ESPN Rams….had that happened….. do you think St Louis might have ended up with Art Model’s Browns (Ravens)?

Interesting point. There was a lot going on around that time… Had that happened, would they then have become The St. Louis Browns? Did that name have to stay in Cleveland? Annnnd, where would the GST have been formed? In the Dome or the open air “colosseum” stadium proposed for Hartford?

Another way to approach that is to assume there’s different groups with different perspectives and we all belong to the same community here.

    I agree with that.

I’ve been following the Rams from a little podunk town in CT since 1967. They were never local for me, always 3000 miles away. I fell in love with the team, the name, the helmets, the QB and the DL. I’ve never needed them to be in my city or state to follow them.

As a matter of fact, when Kraft was engaged in talks with the Governor of CT about moving the Patriots to Hartford, I never once considered changing my favorite team simply because they might have a stadium close to where I live. I was excited only because it meant that NFL games would be 40 minutes away, and once every so often, the Rams might be coming to Hartford. My grudge against Kraft was how he used the CT stadium talks to leverage a new stadium in MA, and made the Governor look stupid because he thought the talks were in earnest. And, of course, multiple occasions of the Patriots doing questionable things to improve their record just fuels the grudge.

So, I do understand the feelings of disgust and hatred toward the owners who play others as puppets for their own gain, and the feeling of betrayal when crap like this happens. I do.

I also know that its possible to root for a team that is located 3000 miles away. I’ve been doing it for 49 years.

Nice play, in a singular sense. Bad, bad game relative to final score. Wash 38, Rams 24.

I TOOK SO MUCH CRAP WHILE I WAS IN HS I STILL REMEMBER IT!!!

Certain games stand out as more painful than others, and this is one of em for me.

Again, though, nice play, nice TD, great uniforms.

NERam – I hope your recovery is going well.

    Thanks.

Broken scapula, broken clavicle and 5 broken ribs. Tell you what, I now have a huge appreciation for any QB who suffers a broken rib, and then a week later covers it up with tape and pads, and then goes out and faces an NFL Defense… It hurts me to just breathe.

    Really appreciate your reports, btw.

Will the Rams be better or worse this year? I’m going with Better.

For one…linebacker. They’ll have Tree and Barron on the field at the same time.. the range the 2 can cover will be impressive and both will be more impactful blitzing.

Also.. a full year in for Barron at his role and Williams being able to scheme for him more.

Guy was one of the top players in NFL at plays behind line of scrimmage… and this year he’ll be there all 16 games.

I thought the limp act was Deon Grant, the Giants player who took a dive against the Rams on MNF… 😉

JK. Looking forward to seeing more of Barron. Hope Tree is up for it at MLB.

    Some computer genius like X
should do a vid on the big plays Tavon has had called back.

He aint ever gonna be Jerry Rice as a WR, but i do
think he’s more than a ‘gadget’ player. I think this is
the year we find out how good a WR he can be. He doesn’t have
to learn a new system, so he should be able to concentrate
on route-running, and holding onto the ball.

    w
    v

Yeah, agree on the non-Rice part. I think many of of the negative comments regarding Austin are made by individuals who are not taking into consideration the big plays not counted part. If some of those plays had counted, maybe he doesn’t rack up the bad press he’s been receiving.

So yeah, not a #1, but good enough to make other D’s uncomfortable.

Trying to look for scale tippers that may have led to the Rams decision to pick Goff over Wentz.

In the same spirit, I looked for positives on Goff.

Martz said Goff showed enough mobility to extend plays as well.

“Now he made some bad plays, but the (good) plays that he made are plays that only an elite player can make,” Martz said. “I think he could be just ‘stupid’ good. He gets rid of the ball so quick.”

Fisher has said recently that he likes the offensive approach he sees with Brady, where you get rid of the ball in a blink.

    Quick release.

    Among other things they liked.

Actually there’s a sports science vid up here somewhere, where they showed that Goff’s release is quicker than Brady’s.

    .

That could be huge. As much as I dislike the Patriots, I have many times watched with grudging appreciation for how quickly Brady gets the ball out. And thought to myself, “well here’s one reason for Bradys longevity… if you ain’t gettin hit too much, you probably ain’t gettin hurt too much.” Although Denver showed last year that you can get to a quick release QB.

    And then there’s this –

“What impressed Martz about Goff was his ability to stand firm in the pocket under pressure, absorb a hit, and keep firing away.

“He’s pretty special,” Martz said. “He has what Kurt had, and I hadn’t seen anybody like that necessarily for a long time. He will stand in there and make throws under duress like I haven’t seen anybody else do since Kurt, really.”

All good stuff. Can’t wait to see how this plays out. Quick release QB with good field vision, and good pocket presence, throwing to Austin and Cooper, with Gurley in the backfield. Yeah, the Rams should be able to move the chains.

Trying to look for scale tippers that may have led to the Rams decision to pick Goff over Wentz. Maybe this played a small part of it. Not the fact that Martz said it, perhaps just a trait that was also evident to the Rams. Just a thought.

Looking at tape of Wentz, Martz said the speed of the game in the NFL will be an adjustment after playing in college at the FCS (or Div. I-AA) level. Martz also thinks Wentz showed a tendency to leave the pocket too soon.

“He’s gonna have to stand in there and make throws,” Martz said. “(The Eagles) have to really put their thumb on him about that. He can win with his legs on some plays, like a Russell Wilson kind of deal. But he can’t turn down throws in order to run it.”

I think I’ll be curious to see what the guys who have access to coaches tape have to say, after watching him.

I thought an interesting comment came from one or more of those guys who said that the Rams receiving corp wasn’t as bad as the press was making them out to be. Receivers were getting open, but the QBS were not seeing wide open opportunities.

I wanted Wentz, but if Goff can demonstrate good pocket presence, good vision, and the ability to lift what was once a mediocre receiving Corp into a respectable one or better, then shoot, I’ll be happy to sing his praises.

.D’haquille “Duke” Williams punched two security guards, a bartender assistant and another unidentified patron of a bar in Auburn following the Tigers’ win over San Jose State, according to two employees who spoke exclusively to AL.com.

Not to jump to any conclusions or anything, but could this mean that Fisher and Snead are abandoning the 4 pillars platform that was so painstakingly installed prior to their arrival?

    NERam

I love Carson Wentz,” Fisher said, “but Jared Goff is gonna be my quarterback. The way he gets the ball out — how he knows where to go with it and gets it to the receiver perfectly, in stride, in the tightest of windows — it’s a sight to behold. You look at the way the Patriots play, with Tom (Brady) just zipping the ball to (Julian) Edelman and (Danny) Amendola before you can even think about touching him, and that’s where football is today. And trust me, Todd Gurley will be the best friend a young quarterback can have.”

That right there is huge. There are probably several reasons (besides good luck) that Brady has played all 16 regular season games except for 2008, when he was out for the season, and getting the ball out quickly before the pass rush got to him certainly helped more than just a little.

QB health and same coach has helped Pat’s tremendously, and can’t help but wonder how many losing seasons might have been winning seasons if the Rams had even half of the consistency that the Pat’s have had.

After initial disappointment in not taking Wentz, Im starting to warm up to the Goff pick. Love reading why Fish and Snead liked him so much, can’t wait to see him in horns.

How does this sound? “Often ‘n Early, Goff ‘n Gurley…

I watched this late last night. Not sure if I was overly tired or not, but this particular exchange made me laugh…

    (On Fisher not looking happy)

FISHER: “I don’t look happy? (Laughs)

FISHER: “I am so excited. You should have seen us in the room there, did you see it? I’m happy, are you kidding me? We just drafted a franchise quarterback with the first pick in the draft. I’m trying to contain myself right now…”

For whatever it’s worth, now it’s done and over with. Let the comparisons between Goff and Wentz commence.

Didn’t he resign his contract so he gets paid based on some incentive package so they couldn’t take much money from him.

    Not sure.

But between the Blue and Orange paint left by Denvers helmets on various Brady body parts in the playoff game, and now this, my guess is he aint a very happy individual right about now.
