You gotta hear this one. I promise.

i said before the game there was no excuse for the rams to lose this game. even playing at seattle.

they were just way too injured to put up any kind of resistance unless the rams just had a collective brain fart the size of la county.

maybe i didn’t expect quite that level of an ass beating. but the rams did what they were supposed to.

i also want to say this. i have no problems with how mcvay has used todd overall. outside of the eagles game. given how he was running and how the game was going, sean absolutely shoulda rode gurley that week.

but overall he’s been almost perfect.

for me the big problem was malcolm brown being hurt. a healthy brown woulda probably meant a more balanced run/pass ratio. but mcvay is smart not to put too much on todd. he’s like what? second in the league in touches??? why would you want to give him the ball more??? as it is he’s on pace for 356 touches. i want todd fresh. not just for the playoffs. but for the coming years. i just find it annoying when people criticize mcvay for not using todd enough. he’s being used enough. the problem was the rams depth at running back fell off when brown was injured.

no. sean played it right. and hopefully, with brown back, the rams run it more. simple as.

Bill Barnwell talks to Alden Gonzalez about the Rams’ shellacking of the Seahawks, Todd Gurley’s place in the MVP race, Sean McVay’s play-calling tendencies, the biggest concerns for this team heading into the postseason and more.

i wanna say. i wouldn’t say there were no signs…

anybody who watched the rams knew about their special teams and defense. they have been good for awhile. and todd gurley was generally recognized as a blue chip talent before last season.

i’m excited. donald seems excited about the possibility of staying here which was very different from the offseason.

pay him what he wants. he deserves every penny of it.

and for my money. he’d be the mvp of the league. all due respect to gurley, but donald is the best player on this team. not even close.

so disruptive. mcvay’s gotta do right by him and surround him with quality players. make this defense the best in the league. lock him up and then draft vita vea and an outside linebacker. re-sign trujo and joyner. maybe draft another cornerback or sign one.

i laughed out loud when that play happened.

and i have a ton of respect for wilson. but that’s what makes it that much more impressive.

todd gurley. what’s so refreshing is not so much his yardage totals and touchdowns. it’s the efficiency at which he is producing these numbers. he’s not getting an excessive amount of carries, and he’s become such a force in the receiving game as well. his average per carry is now up to 4.6. that’s astonishing considering he was averaging less than 4 yards per carry in the month of september. just hope he continues to develop his game. i don’t see why he wouldn’t.

aaron donald. he’s now tied a career high of 11 sacks with 2 games to go. i said in the offseason that he should get whatever he asks for. i stand by that. he’s what a face of the franchise should look like. ultra-competitive. won’t be outworked. and just a freakish athletic talent. when he gets his hands on you, it’s over. pay the man.

robert quinn. oh, brother. if this guy is back, wow. that changes everything in the offseason. now i’m not foolish enough to think that he’ll ever be completely his old self. but if he can be productive like he has been in these past 4-5 games, the rams need to keep him. i think the weight loss has done him good. less stress on the back.

andrew whitworth. i think this guy can play at a high level for the next 2 years after this season at least. they need him to.

personally i would not bring back watkins. i like him, but the depth is so good. and they need defense badly.

austin. i don’t know if it makes sense cap-wise to cut him. if it does make sense, then no. i don’t see him coming back. cooper is already starting to take some of those jet sweeps away from him. he’s pretty much a backup rb at this point.

Just watched that big unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against Trumaine Johnson again. I understand keeping your composure, but that was just an unwarranted flag.

it was a bogus call. and i would say the same had an eagles player been called for the same penalty.

losing this game would be a choke job. let’s face it. even playing on the road, no way rams should lose to this team with all the injuries they have. it’d be just a huge letdown.

yeah. long-term i don’t think he’s the answer. they need an edge rusher in this draft. i think it might be a decent year for edge rushers.

    they need cornerback too though.

i think robert woods coming back makes a big difference, and seattle’s defense is hurting. plus the team has had some experience playing in hostile road environments. so yeah. i think they got a chance.

so i guess this is where one would say the rubber hits the road?

    the master vs the apprentice?

i don’t know. every game for the past 4 weeks seemingly has been so exciting. a loss would be so deflating for sure after making it this far.

Sometimes you get the tuck rule sometimes you don’t… good play by Howie’s son…. that ball was loose for a long time before being pick up. It was like in slo motion as it happened…it was fucked

good point. happens to the best of them and a year later that coulda been a fumble.

ha. yes. it did feel like it was in slow motion didn’t it?

So I’d say Elway, Young, Staubach were better than Marino, Warner, Brady.

not a big fan of young. never saw staubach play.

but i think young was great. and aaron rodgers and russell wilson are great to watch as well.

i would take marino, warner, and brady over elway. but probably not young, aaron rodgers, or russell wilson.

but i would also take brady and belichick over rodgers and wilson and their head coaching counterparts. now steve young and bill walsh??? hmmm… i might still take brady and belichick. that’s tough.

but i like goff a lot. and if he progresses like i think he can. he will be my favorite rams qb ever.

On that 1st hi light where Goff escapes and hits Gurley for the screen…. if I’m not mistaken, Goff is stripped by Long 1 or 2 plays later…. that was a total bummer

yeah. but in a way, it’s promising. he shows flashes of clutch ability. not just this game but in other games as well. he’s just inconsistent. in time, the consistency will come.

watching the both of them play the other day. carson comes across as an athletic marvel. a gun slinging athletic marvel. and it’s entertaining for sure.

goff physically. athletically. can’t compare. he’s slow footed. he can’t throw it on a rope. but he’s like a surgeon. deliberate. precise with his movements. his movements in the pocket are subtle. and as he gains more experience he should be able to hone his skills.

i preferred wentz over goff before the draft but with his age and potential. he could quickly become my favorite rams qb of all time.

i do think this was a game where gurley’s touches needed to be cranked up given how he was running. i don’t think it’s a sound long-term plan for using gurley, but this was a game where yeah. you use him more.

but overall, i have no problem with how mcvay has used gurley this season. he can’t be the workhorse every game. that’s a good way to run him into the ground.

and if the refs would have called holding on the eagles oline, maybe the rams dline woulda been there to make more plays on carson. haha.

i don’t think this fumble was as bad as the gurley fumble against seattle although he might have held onto the ball a little too long.

goff actually made worse plays than that during the game. i think he easily should have thrown 2 interceptions yesterday if not for the eagles defender having hands of stone.

those were worse plays than the fumble at the end. he just got lucky. and the defender did not make a good play.

he’s been great. i think he’s gotta chance to hit 70 receptions and 1000 yards.

and i think next year can get even better. 90 to 100 receptions??? 1400 yards???

Long just made a really good play.

that’s also a great point. and i agree.

not so much a bad play by goff but just a really good play by long. could goff have made a better play? maybe. i read over at the herd that goff got a little bit of tunnel vision there and missed a guy coming across the middle. i don’t know. could be. but yeah. that was also just a good play by the opposing team.

overall goff has made way more good plays than bad. and he can get better. he’s young.

defensive backs really worry me. at this point, i think the rams finish 11-5. possibly 10-6.

defense in general worries me. they need to focus on defense and offensive line this offseason. they need to bring starters on defense and depth on offensive line with an eye toward developing starters for the future.

this is where we find out how good of a head coach mcvay really is.

In other words, trash talking, though Jeffrey had no problem with it.

But see the refs had warned them before that. Tru acted in defiance of those warnings. That’s what led to the call.

yeah. that’s why i said i really doubt they were just discussing football.

Yeah except the bad situation was Foles melting down in his first real year running a pro system after running spreads in college and with Kelly in the pros. (Though he was in a pro style system his rookie year but was not good at it). 3 training camps later he has been learning pro offenses now–making it 3 straight years—and yeah he looks better at it now.

    yes. hence the bad situation.

there’s lots of reasons keenum and foles didn’t work out with the rams. lots of reasons. i think some of it does fall on the coaching staff as well. not just fisher. but the coaching staff as a whole. just as i credit the coaching staff for developing goff. and not just mcvay. and goff is in his first season in a new offensive scheme. that’s 2 schemes in 2 years. his first two in the league. that’s a credit to the coaching staff. and i don’t think boras and company achieve that with goff. even with goff being in the same system for 2 years.

but i also recognize that many coaching staffs probably couldn’t either. the rams just struck gold hiring mcvay.

but i could also say the same when spags was fired. i wasn’t fully on board with spags firing, but i accepted it when i realized fisher was coming. and at the time i thought it was the right decision. and it was. fisher did a lot of good things for this organization to get it to the point that it was at when it arrived at los angeles.

and similarly, this was the right decision. mcvay picked up where fisher left off, and i think he has taken this team to where fisher wouldn’t have been able to. but that doesn’t discredit where fisher did take this team. which is signficant. there was mediocrity, but he made this team at least competitive. which is better than it was before fisher got here. he built a foundation.

I agree with PA who said Woods is more valuable than Watkins. I just haven’t seen Watkins be a difference-maker.

i agree too. in fact, i would not re-sign watkins. and believe me. i love watkins. i like his skill set. but woods is signed long-term. you got kupp cheap. and cooper and reynolds have shown flashes. on top of that, i think everett still could get better. i’d rather see them direct those resources to re-signing joyner, donald. maybe even trujo.

they need to shore up the defense. they need to have a plan to replace whit and sully. watkins is a luxury. and there’s too many other questions to focus resources toward re-signing him. it’s unfortunate. i was really hoping he’d light up the league this year.

i love gurley. love him. i love goff. love goff.

    loving that backfield.

i hope gurley keeps working on his receiving game. incorporates more routes in his game. make him more unpredictable as a receiver.

seemed to run with real good vision yesterday. patient. although that’s easy to say with the chunks of yards he was eating up.

foles is talented. i’m telling ya. he’s a good qb. just in a bad situation with the rams at the time.

i don’t know that the eagles are necessarily doomed at this point although it’s a definite drop off from wentz to nick.

i watched the second half of the game yesterday again. i had to step away for awhile. yeah. this defense needs work. i realize that this is the number one scoring offense they went up against, but they still need to do better. that’s even realizing that they lost webster early and trujo later. part of it was committing dumb penalties. although truth be told. that flag on trujo was bs.

still goff had a chance to put this game away in the fourth quarter. maybe he thought he had to make a play with the way the defense was playing. but he’s gotta be smarter with the ball. these things happen. i don’t think it was a matter of not being clutch. i just think he really badly wanted to make a play.

one thing about that int. a couple plays before goff showed great pocket presence i thought. spun away from a couple defenders. and instead of panicking, he stood strong and delivered a simple pass to gurley for a good gain. one problem. havenstein gets hurt on the play and guess what? williams, who replaced havenstein, gets beat by long for the strip sack.

it happens. goff needs more seasoning. i think we pretty much all realized that before the season started. this just emphasizes that. but what we’ve seen is really promising, no?

before the game we marveled at his ability to shrug bad plays off. and i still think that’s true. and that’s a good thing. that’s what all the clutch players do. cuz they make plenty of non-clutch plays. it’s their ability to shrug those bad plays off and still want the ball in their hands. just give him another offseason. give the receivers another offseason. they’ll be fine.

gurley really showed me something. he’s still third on my list of favorite running backs. but he really showed up yesterday. he keeps getting better. and he isn’t even close to reaching his potential yet. just love his playing style. i like the goff gurley backfield. i think that duo is definitely by second favorite backfield of all time.

in 99, that offense was all potential realized. it was composed of people who had a lot of professional football played under their belts. even warner toiled in the arena league and nfl europe before that season. holt was the lone rookie starter on that offense although there was hakim who was in his second year.

but this offense. you have a very very raw sophomore qb. i think we forget that a lot of times. as a rookie, he was about as raw a qb can be. he’s still only 23. he doesn’t even have a full 2 seasons under his belt. shoot he didn’t even have a full season under his belt entering this season. he’s switched offensive schemes once already. and you know what. he’s still played very well this season despite that. i’m not a laker fan. but i’ve tracked his career living in this area. you can’t help but not. i see shades of kobe in goff’s career. a lot of talent. but very green. he didn’t really take off until phil jackson became the lakers head coach. he had talent. he was fearless. but he lacked maturity. that’s what goff needs. he needs maturing.

then you got gurley who’s still only 23 years old in his third season. faulk was still playing for indianapolis at 23. he didn’t even reach his peak years until age 25 his fifth season in the league, when he was coupled with a way too mature for his age peyton manning in his rookie year. gurley won’t even reach his fifth season until 2019 when he’ll be 25 years old. that’s crazy. just need some luck. combined with lots of hard work. and that duo will be something else.

the receivers. there’s no one on this team that can compare to isaac bruce, but woods is a very dependable receiver. i think not having him available really hurt this game. but you know what? maybe just maybe. for the long-term. goff having to play these stretch of games without his number one receiver will actually help him. i don’t know. just babbling a little bit at this point. maybe a little delirious cuz i’m sick. kupp compares very easily to holt. rookies. mature rookies. but still rookies. kupp i expect to be much better next season. which is pretty crazy considering kupp has the chance to top 1000 yards this season especially if woods misses more games.

i guess my point is that as long as the offensive line holds up, and considering the ages of whitworth and sullivan that’s a little worrying, this offense is still full of potential even as well as they’ve played this year. that’s different from the 99 team which pretty much hit the ground running.
