I don’t think they have any cap space.

I don’t know, man, I myself am getting a little impatient with this whole “it’s Friday, which star will they get today” thing.

    Time for some real football.

He said, impatiently, knowing full well there was still a ways to go…

    i wouldn’t know.

part of me does want to see the rams develop some players.

that’s part of what mcvay was supposed to bring. his ability to relate and teach.

so yeah. there kinda is no fun in bringing in already established stars. then mcvay just becomes manager of egos.

but tight end i think is a weak spot. maybe they draft a guy like ian thomas. but he’s very raw. talented but raw.

Todd Gurley says it would be ‘awesome’ if the Rams were to add Odell Beckham Jr.

    By GARY KLEIN
    MAR 29, 2018 | 11:00 PM

The reigning NFL offensive player of the year played for the league’s highest-scoring team and led the league in touchdowns.

But Rams running back Todd Gurley said Thursday night that there was plenty of room in the offense for more playmakers.

    Like receiver Odell Beckham Jr.?

Beckham, the New York Giants star, has been linked to the Rams since news broke this week that the Giants were shopping — or at least testing the market — for a playmaker seeking a mega-extension as he enters the final year of his rookie contract.

    Gurley knows Beckham.

“Oh yeah, that’s my guy,” Gurley said at the Sunset Marquis Hotel in West Hollywood, where he took part in an event hosted by Roc Nation, his representation firm.

Like coach Sean McVay and general manager Les Snead, Gurley appeared wary of saying too much about a player on another team.

But when told that McVay spoke this week about how Beckham, hypothetically, might fit into a high-powered offense that features Gurley and quarterback Jared Goff, Gurley agreed with McVay’s assessment that there are always enough snaps to keep everyone happy.

“There’s always enough snaps,” Gurley, speaking hypothetically, said with a broad grin. “There’s always enough snaps.

“If we had him, man, it would be awesome. I’d be happy, Goff will be happy, coach McVay will be happy, [owner Stan] Kroenke, the whole team would be.”

The New York Daily News, citing an unnamed source, reported this week that Beckham had told “a couple” of Rams players that he “wants in.”

Asked whether Beckham has expressed interest to him about coming to L.A., Gurley smiled.

“Hmm, I don’t want to say all that,” he said. “That’s my boy.”

Gurley then joined Lakers rookie Josh Hart and musical artist Normani in the “Off Script CEO Connect” event, which gave the trio an opportunity to introduce themselves to brand executives.

Gurley has endorsement deals with Nike and Gatorade among others.

“He knows what it takes to be great on the field and he’s also matured and hit his stride,” Michael Yormark, Roc Nation’s president and chief of branding and strategy, said of Gurley, adding, “He understands the landscape and he understands what the expectations are, and he probably also has a better feel for what he wants to become on the field and off the field.”

The hotel where the event was held is located less than three miles from the Hollywood Boulevard location where Gurley participated in a photo shoot for an NFL sportswear advertising campaign two years ago.

At the time, Gurley was coming off a 2015 season that earned him the NFL offensive rookie of the year award. His profile was expected to grow with the Rams’ return to Los Angeles from St. Louis.

    But Gurley struggled in 2016.

The Rams fired coach Jeff Fisher with three games left in the season, finished 4-12 and ranked as the league’s worst offense for the second year in a row.

The hiring of the offense-minded McVay changed everything.

Tackle Andrew Whit-worth and center John Sullivan solidified the offensive line. Goff developed into a top-10 passer. Receivers Robert Woods, Cooper Kupp and Sammy Watkins were reliable targets.

And Gurley reemerged with one of the most productive seasons in Rams history.

He rushed for 1,305 yards and 13 touchdowns and caught a team-best 64 passes for 788 yards and six touchdowns.

The Rams won the NFC West but lost to Atlanta in the wild-card round of the playoffs.

They appear poised to take the next step after recently adding Pro Bowl cornerbacks Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib and Pro Bowl defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh.

“I love it, man,” Gurley said of his new teammates. “That’s like motivation for everybody.

“Since they’ve been signing, I’m like starting to work out twice a day because it’s a good opportunity this year.

“It looks great on paper but it doesn’t mean anything if you don’t get anything done during the season.”

people talking about trading 2 first round picks. and i’m hearing this on the downtown rams podcast. i don’t know how to post it. they’re overlooking one thing. how in the hell do you replace whitworth?

then you gotta hope that whitworth is the next bruce matthews.

I dunno about the Oline or the Passing game.

thinking more and more rams need to draft a left tackle at 23. really want a guy like landry, but left tackle would be the smart move.

Passer rating when kept clean in the pocket is one of the most stable numbers you can find, potentially predictive because of it.

    what was goff’s?

    nah. pass.

i could see a scenario where this all backfires.

and mcvay takes on a little more than he can handle.

but most of the big egos are on defense and so i think sonofbum’s experience does play a role.

but yeah. it’s not without risks.

the rams consulted not only donald but other players on defense. i think the rams approached this the right way. does this mean it’ll work? no. but i think bringing the players in was the right approach.

    http://www.latimes.com/sports/rams/la-sp-rams-sean-mcvay-20180327-story.html

The Rams sought feedback from Donald, Peters, Talib, defensive lineman Michael Brockers and safety Lamarcus Joyner while pursuing Suh, McVay said. Donald, 26, also communicated with the 31-year-old Suh during the process, the coach said.

“The mutual respect that exists between those two players was imperative and really paramount to even pursue this in the first place,” McVay said. “They felt good about it.

“And I think the one thing you feel so good about Aaron Donald is he said, ‘Hey, the guy’s a great football player. If he can help us win let’s get him on board.'”

How would a player such as Beckham hypothetically fit into the Rams offense?

“Hypothetically, I think a player of his caliber can kind of really do everything,” McVay said.

Asked, hypothetically, how he felt about trading a first-round pick or using other options to acquire a targeted player, McVay replied with what sounded like a not-so-veiled recruiting pitch.

“One of the things that being able to play in such a unique environment and atmosphere like L.A., it provides an opportunity to take advantage of that,” he said, “and that’s something we want to be proactive about.”

    here’s the article.

    http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/giants/3-elements-satisfied-giants-trade-beckham-rams-article-1.3898756

Does Beckham want to play for the Rams? One source told me at the league meetings that Beckham has told two Rams players he wants in. He does love New York, so his feeling for the Rams could quite possibly be only if the Giants trade him. Maybe he wants LA regardless.

i just imagine goff, gurley, and beckham jr for the next four years.

holy crap. how scary would that be?

Maybe they find a way to run the ball to the outside or run screens or move the quarterback around or whatever.

yeah. they need to find some edge defenders. right now it’s a second year unknown and a complete unknown…

    makes me nervous.

if. and only if a guy like marcus davenport fell to them at #23, would i take an edge rusher.

he’s a bigger guy. had sack production. but also lots of tfls which tells me he’s pretty good in run support. although he did all that playing for a smaller school. still. he’s got size and power and speed. his agility drills are not the best. but he’s got length and power and speed.

i don’t think i saw this posted yet. and i can’t remember where i read it. i think it was the new york daily. but apparently obj has talked to a couple rams players, and he wants to come to the rams. IF he gets traded. but he’d prefer to sign a long term deal with new york.

i understand why people would not want him. and the only way i would want him is if they could sign him long term but not at the expense of losing donald, gurley, or goff.

i would want him ahead of joyner or peters. the rams seem to be very good at drafting defensive backs anyway.

obj i think is hof caliber.

if they can draft left tackle in the first round. then you take an edge rusher with the third.

guys who could be available are ogbonnia okoronkwo, lorenzo carter, dorance armstrong, josh sweat, kemoko turay…

or they could go tight end… i wouldn’t mind tight end actually. after all the time spent fixing the dline and secondary. the rams could really use an upgrade at that position. probably the biggest weakness on offense is tight end.

and then you have 2 fourth rounders.

i’m curious as to how they approach the draft. several different ways they could go.

worst case scenario. this unit can’t stop the run. and the lack of quality edge rushers stunts the pass rush.

the run defense. i don’t know. i hope suh can play nose.

i wonder what there ultimate plan is for and edge rusher. they can’t be done yet.

I am excited to watch this defense. Invader, I also think the Rams should draft a LOT in the first round and look for linebackers later in the draft.

that’s what i would do. plus, the offense has been a little neglected.

they also need a big red zone target. maybe marcedes lewis in free agency?

just making the playoffs would be a letdown at this point.

now all eyes focus on goff…. i think he’ll be alright.

    so that makes it.

    brockers suh donald

    ebukam littleton barron ???

    peters joyner johnson talib

maybe they sign barwin back? or have they already? but i like the look of that defense already. i know suh isn’t the ideal fit at nose tackle. but i think he can make it work enough on run defense. and that pass rush. ON PAPER. looks unreal. they’re going to occupy lots of blockers those three. and phillips i think has said is willing to sacrifice some there if it means getting to the qb.

and besides. suh graded out very well in run defense last year. pff gave him a 91 in run defense.

almost definitely they draft an outside linebacker but don’t know which round.

i want miller in the first round. let him learn under whitworth. i don’t think they should draft linebacker in the first round anymore. i don’t pass up the chance to draft a left tackle with his physical abilities cuz who knows when the next chance will be.

and this draft has plenty of outside linebackers to choose from. if there’s no left tackle they like, then trade down.

demarcus ware was on nfl network talking about how it might work with suh on this defense. said a lot of stuff i didn’t quite understand. thinks he would alternate between 5 tech and 6 tech. while brockers would alternate between 5 tech and 0 tech.

like i said i don’t quite understand it. i know brockers played 5 tech last year. 0 tech is nose tackle.

6 technique is over the tight end apparently?

anyway. he speculates that he would provide pressure from the outside and the outside linebackers could line up inside and get pressure that way??? i think that’d be reserved for passing downs. doesn’t sound like a base defense to me.

dunno. i’m probably messing it all up. it was over my head.

this whole thing. reminds me of the cris carter fiasco back in 2002 was it?

i remember guys imagining a wr corps of bruce, holt, and carter. i think proehl was still a ram. and maybe hakim was already a lion at this point? i can’t remember. i’m looking at pro football reference right now.

and then cris goes to miami and sucks. and the rams start their slow descent back into some awful awful football.

hopefully, this turns out the exact opposite. rams sign suh, suh kicks ass. and the rams continue their ascent.

Huge News Day For Cris Carter
Why is this man smiling? Because this photo was taken before Wednesday — arguably one of the most embarrassing days of Cris Carter’s post-Philadelphia career.
    Tim Yotter – Mar 6, 2002

In the span of 12 hours Wednesday, the ideal relationship of Hall of Fame receiver and Super Bowl title favorite came crashing down and there’s nobody to blame but Carter.

So much happened in the course of the day that VU was burning up the phone and e-mail lines and it’s easier to simply do it chronologically, so we present “The C Files.”

THE C FILES: A DAY OF INFAMY

    * Carter leaves Miami Tuesday talking that he would like to play with the Dolphins, but VU learns that a Miami front office official says he believes Carter is simply using the Rams for leverage.

    * Carter arrives in Cleveland and the Browns hit him with the home-town sentimentality, as well as claiming they will offer him a better package and a starter’s pay — as opposed to the Rams, who envision him as a third receiver with third-receiver pay.

    * Hours before anything breaks on the Carter front, VU is told that Rams coach Mike Martz conducted a background check on Carter and might be having second thoughts. One key Ram in particular, RB Marshall Faulk, had a problem with Carter from the Pro Bowl a year ago, yelling at Carter for what Faulk perceived as a lack of blocking that left him open to big hits.

    * Carter contacts the Rams Wednesday afternoon, claiming he is being held up in Cleveland — interpretation: trying to work out the numbers for a contract — and wants to delay his trip to St. Louis.

    * Carter and the Browns don’t reach an immediate agreement and Carter contacts the Rams about rescheduling his visit for later Wednesday night.

    * Martz, fed up after setting up a dinner meeting with Carter and several key Rams personnel and their wives, including QB Kurt Warner, tells Carter to forget the visit if he’s going to be late.

    * Carter and the Browns don’t reach an immediate agreement and, while a deal looks more possible now than ever, no deal is done and the Rams aren’t happy.

    * The badmouthing of Carter begins by the Rams, who, unlike the bunker mentality of the Vikings, speak more freely about team matters.

    * VU is told the Rams won’t consider dealing with Carter again until after the league meetings March 17-22. However, they’re moving forward, planning to bring Tampa Bay WR Jacquez Green in for a visit Friday.

    * VU learns that Carter called Martz more than a dozen times since the end of the season, claiming money isn’t an issue — pointing out how much he has made the last three seasons — and claimed all he wanted was to finally play for a Super Bowl team. Martz is disillusioned with Carter, saying if the Rams don’t fit that criteria, no team in the NFL does.

    * VU is told that Rams Player Personnel VP Charley Armey was against the signing of Carter all along, concerned that he would be a bad influence in the locker room.

    * Another source close to the Rams says that the Wednesday escapades show what a phony individual Carter is and that his interest in football is more selfish than team oriented.

    * A front office source with the Rams says he’s convinced Carter will sign with Cleveland and has been told as much.

So goes the saga of Cris Carter. He wanted his ring. He wanted it badly from the number of times he called Martz. Yet, apparently more money can ease that pain. The Browns are a team on the rise and, perhaps in the next year or two, could be a Super Bowl contender. But the Rams already are and Carter possibly made the mistake of his life by passing up the chance to realize every player’s dream of being on a title team and playing for the last team standing at the end of a season.

i can’t really speak from a salary cap and dollars perspective. i don’t know about the analysis of whether it makes sense to keep a top-notch defensive player as a percentage of your salary cap.

i don’t really care. i can only speak as an emotionally invested fan. i fucking love aaron donald. might end up being my favorite player ever if he can stay his entire career or at least 90% of his career with the rams. i love him that much. and so i want to see the rams sign him no matter what it takes. and if he goes for the dollars with another team so be it.

but i want donald to stay with the rams. and if he doesn’t, the rams will always lose in my mind. they will have failed.
