Ray McDonald is no longer a member of the 49ers.

San Francisco GM Trent Baalke addressed the media on Wednesday afternoon, and revealed that the team terminated its contract with the defensive lineman.

“We just want to inform everybody that after the recent allegations concerning Ray McDonald, we as an organization have notified him and his agent that he will be terminated, released immediately. Effective immediately,” Baalke announced.

“While this organization has a strong belief in due process and has demonstrated that over time, Ray has demonstrated a pattern of poor decision-making that has led to multiple distractions for this organization and this football team that really can no longer be tolerated.”

McDonald is being investigated for alleged sexual assault, the San Jose Police Department reported in a statement Wednesday morning.

No arrests have been made and the investigation is active and ongoing, according to SJPD.

On Tuesday at approximately 10:43 a.m., SJPD received a call from an area hospital regarding a possible sexual assault victim who was receiving treatment, according to SJPD.

According to NBC Bay Area reporter Damian Trujillo, the alleged victim was not McDonald’s fiancée.

“Officers responded and made contact with the adult female victim,” SJPD reported in a statement “The victim alleged she was possibly sexually assaulted a day prior. The preliminary investigation revealed the alleged suspect was Ray McDonald.”

The SJPD Sexual Assaults Investigations Unit conducted a follow-up investigation. Based on preliminary investigation, detectives secured a search warrant and served it at McDonald’s residence in San Jose, according to police.

    Kaepernik assesses the situation:

“It’s tough. He’s a good friend to a lot of people on this team,” Kaepernick said. “No one around him ever thought bad of him. He was always a good person to everyone around here, so hopefully it’s just a misunderstanding.”

“…More to the point, though, it is an example that the 49ers have had enough of not only McDonald but of the season in its totality, one which ended Sunday with a 17-7 loss at Seattle. Between the stadium’s shortcomings, the ongoing jousts with head coach Jim Harbaugh, York’s ill-advised postgame tweet after the first Seattle loss the McDonald issues, the suspension of linebacker Aldon Smith and the on-field struggles that turned a Super Bowl contender into a hard-to-watch also-ran, York has seemingly determined that his patience has been exhausted.

This could signal the beginning of a full-on restructuring/rebuilding of not only the coaching staff, which would have been expected, but on the organization’s general rules of operation. …”

“As a financial matter, McDonald was signed for next year, with a cap number of $6,475,985. There will be $4,609,971 of dead money, and $1,806,014 in cap savings, per Spotrac. But the 49ers have chosen to put financial considerations as well as football ability on hold as the crisis surrounding this season has been ratcheted upward yet again.”

You don’t think it has anything to do with the fact that they were just eliminated from playoff contention, do you?

I’m looking forward to the implosion. I predict we finish no worse than 3rd in the NFC West next year, with the Niners coming in dead last.

I think it had EVERYTHING To do with them being out of playoff contention.

If they were in first in the NFC West, there’s no way in hell, they put home field advantage in jeopardy.

This was a “luxury” move only makable because they’re out of the playoff hunt. Otherwise, it’d just be a whole ‘nuther steaming pile of “due process” stuff from them when NFL Teams aren’t bound by due process.

Sports is the crucible of human virtue. The distillate remains are human vice.
