Nacua is going to get the records. 4 catches and 29 yards is one drive. They are not going to rest him when he is that close to the records. After he puts his name on the top of those lists, maybe.

It will be interesting to see what McVay does.

If the Rams had managed to choke away the game to the Giants, they would have something to play for, and the 9ers would have some motivation to knock them out. But with little on the line, health is more important than whether the Rams play Detroit or Dallas, and San Francisco has nothing to gain or lose, except health.

As much as i hate seeing either SF or LA rest their starters, it just makes too much sense to do it.  The walking wounded would benefit from it.

It would still be nice for the Rams’ second-string to beat the 49ers second-string.

Weird situation.   I dont remember this happening before.   Dunno what to think of it.

Will either team even pass the ball more than ten times?

In 2017, the Rams were 4-1 down the stretch and rested starters against the 49ers in Week 17. In the playoff game against the Falcons, Rams fell down 13-0 and didn’t score their first points until 2:30 left in the 2nd quarter. First four drives ended in four plays or less.

Okay, but teams coming off a bye win more often than not.

Yeah, I don’t know, but that if the Rams beat their first-round opponent, they will go back to San Francisco.

And I will suddenly want the Rams to win that game more than I can possibly imagine right now. While I have no delusion about the Rams winning 4 straight playoff games on the road, beating the 9ers in the playoffs again would heal a whole lot of historical wounds. The 9ers are the odds-on favorites to win it all this year. They have the inside track, clearly. They’ve been the best team all season long, the recent loss to the Ravens notwithstanding. It is all laid out for them to win it all this year. To fall short this year would gut that team and their fans, especially if the Rams stick in that dagger.

I want you to know that I will have things to say about it if that happens.

I’m for resting the equipment managers.

I think teams can play one meaningless game after they’ve clinched their playoff spots where they don’t wear any uniforms, helmets, or padding. Or for that matter, use footballs.

Carson Wentz vs Sam Darnold won’t be bad to watch…

I don’t see the Rams starting Stafford or Kupp or AD… do you?

I don’t see the 49ers starting Purdy, Kittle or Deebo.

Ben Skowronek, Tutu, Austin Trammel, Royce Freeman, Ronnie Rivers….  this is your chance to shine. ….

that’s too bad, i wanted to see Kyren’s mom get to snatch another ball from an opposing fan in the stands…..   She rightfully snaked that ball away from Saquon Barkley fan last Sunday in East Rutherford…..

A 10-7 record would be nice to see.

I think the Rams play Stafford the opening drive. I’ll bet he would like to be the QB who throws Nacua into the record books. 4 catches/29 yards, doable.

The 9ers will rest Trent Williams, and resting him means resting Purdy. Is my guess.

I’m thinking of resting myself, Sunday;  I think i will be fresher for the Playoffs.

When’s the last time a 6th or 7th seed got to rest starters in the last game, btw?   When’s the last time TWO teams faced off and BOTH were resting starters?

The Rams won’t be favourites regardless of who they play in the WC round, but I would much rather they play the Lions than the Cowboys. I hadn’t even considered that they would rest any healthy players vs. the Niners.

Such a strange situation.  Does the game mean more to the Rams or SF?   Shanahan or McVay?   Does ‘vanilla’ favor the 49ers or Rams?

If you are a player how do play hard yet protect yourself for the playoffs?

“…We wondered whether Brock Purdy would start for the 49ers Sunday and head coach Kyle Shanahan provided the answer on Wednesday afternoon. Purdy is out, and Sam Darnold is in.
This comes on the heels of the Rams announcing that starting quarterback Matthew Stafford will rest in Week 18 in favor of Carson Wentz.
Shanahan said, “Brock’s the only guy for sure I don’t plan on playing.” That’s not counting Christian McCaffrey, of course.
Shanahan said, “there’s a good chance we’re playing this team in two weeks, so I think both sides will be pretty vanilla” when talking about the game plan for Sunday….

Reading around on SF.   Did you know they have FOUR guys over 1000 yards?    The GSOT never had that, right?

Kittle, McCaffrey, Aiyuk, Deebo.     And Purdy has over 4000 yards passing.

“…The Lions also have an outside shot at it but would need rookie Sam LaPorta to get 136 yards to join Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery with at least 1,000 yards from scrimmage. Jared Goff already has hit the 4,000-yard mark in passing..”

    ..

Carson Wentz will start for the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers, head coach Sean McVay said on Wednesday, giving Matthew Stafford an extra week of rest before the wild-card round.

“Excited about Carson’s opportunity,” said McVay, “but when you look at the totality of balancing what you think is best, there’s not a perfect solution especially when you’re talking about 53 guys, 48 active, able to flex two up (but) we do have a couple injuries … This was just what we felt like was the best thing.”

The Rams will also rest receiver Cooper Kupp, running back Kyren Williams, defensive tackle Aaron Donald and inside linebacker Ernest Jones, McVay said. Tight end Tyler Higbee (shoulder) and offensive lineman Joe Noteboom (foot) will miss Sunday’s game due to their injuries.

“When you look at it, what we just felt like was this approach was the best one for our team,” said McVay, also indicating that the Rams did not consider variables such as playoff seeding in the decision.

Going into Sunday’s matchup,  The 49ers will also start a backup QB in Sam Darnold as they rest Brock Purdy.

Receiver Puka Nacua, who is just 29 yards away from the all-time rookie receiving record, appears to be getting at least a shot at breaking it.

“I think you’d like to see him get an opportunity to do something special,” said McVay. “And then be smart with him.”

Wentz was signed as a free agent by the Rams during their Week 10 bye. Sunday will mark the first significant minutes he has played this season, minus a few handoffs in garbage time wins.

But Wentz has gotten plenty of work in practice while running the scout team, minus a third quarterback on the roster. He’s also very active on the sidelines during games, something McVay lightheartedly noticed after the Rams beat the Washington Commanders in Week 15.

“He was buzzing back and forth in front of me like running wind sprints. I actually noticed that yesterday,” McVay said. “I don’t know what the hell was going on. He was staying loose though. I do know that much. … He wanted to get some extra cardio in during the game. He was double dipping … I actually did notice that a couple times as this big creature was buzzing back and forth in front of me on the sidelines.”

Now, Wentz will get his opportunity to play actual football in 2024.

The Rams are Wentz’s fourth team in as many seasons, since he was the Philadelphia Eagles’ No. 2 draft pick in 2016 (Eagles from 2016 to 2020, Indianapolis Colts in 2021 and Commanders in 2022).

Wentz started seven games for the Commanders last season, throwing for 1,755 yards with 11 touchdowns, nine interceptions and an 80.2 passer rating.

Dresser Winn, who was with the team in training camp, was signed to the practice squad this week and will be the backup to Wentz.

Bad luck for me. If Washington plays in the same time slot as the Rams, the Rams aren’t on. They usually don’t, so I sometimes get to see them for late games. Not this Sunday. Will have to wait until the playoffs.

I’m conflicted about Nacua. It’s great that he has a shot at the rookie record, but I think I’d rather they sit him for the entire game. He plays too hard, and with abandon, so it’s always risky for him to be on the field at all.

The Rams, IMO, have had too many misses on Draft Days through the years, but this last draft class is otherworldly. Don’t think they’ve ever done better, especially given the absence of a 1st . . . not to mention past years when the Rams have had multiple early picks. Throw in Dotson, Robinson, and Witherspoon, and one could argue it’s their best offseason, evah. Can they make it rain hidden gems in 2024?

I would argue that 2024 competes with 98: they drafted Wistrom, Little, and Hakim plus a serviceable blocking TE in Wms, and then also signed Proehl and Agnew as FAs while picking up Nutten, McCollum, Warner, and Fletcher . 97 was good too (Pace and several others) as was 99 (Holt, Faulk, Green, and Timmerman). Notably, they hit on all their 1st rounders in that span. That was all Vermeil. When it was just Armey and Martz, they began screwing up.

Meanwhile the 2023 Rams would not be themselves if they hadn’t scored on a number of picks and pick-ups in previous years, including Fuller, Lake, Jones, Brown, Jackson, Shelton, Kupp, and Williams.

To me the big difference between the previous few years and 2023 is that in 23 they scored on their 2nd round pick, something they had been kind of lacking under McVay/Snead, where they tended to be mediocre. So I hope they continue drafting well in the lower rounds as they have all along, while repeating what they did in 2023 with rounds  1 and 2. (Obviously they didn’t have a 1st in 2023 but you know what I mean–I am hoping they do with the 1 and 2 in 2024 what they finally did with the 2 in 23).

Avila looks like a major hit for them, and they scored big, it appears, with Turner and Young (Sounds kinda like a Buddy flick, doesn’t it?). Plus, of course, the real stunner: Nacua. Davis Allen and Ethan Evans look good so far as well. I’m still hoping Zach Evans can find a way to get on the field, too.

Anyway, Bennett, to me, is the only real sour note from this draft so far, with a few of the 6th and 7th rounders still being in limbo, basically. As in, they could end up helping the team as well. But it’s hard to get angry if picks that late don’t pan out. You do want at least the first four rounds to hit, though, if possible.

Hope you’re right about this next offseason, and I’m guessing you are. The Rams very likely learned a lot about process, team-building, and gained a sense of . . . well, humility . . . from the down year/bounce-back. This season’s all gravy, IMO. But next year, they gotta get back to the Big Dance.

I really suspect that’s true about what you call the year of humility, and that they learned from it.

If that’s not just wishful thinking on my part, then, good times ahead.
