Saw the Kurt movie on dvd.   It was exactly what you’d expect in the

“faith based” genre.   I’ve seen four or five of these types of films

and they are all exactly the same.   They do not hit the viewer over the head with the Jesus-stuff.   They have learned to do a tricky-balancing thing:  Just enough Jesus to satisfy the core christian audience, but not enough to put-off

the non-jesus folks.   They want the film to cross-over into the mainstream audience for obvious reasons.

As for the /production/acting — all good, i thought.

The one really outstanding aspect of the movie was the Zeller kid’s performance.   Non-actor.   Played Brenda Warner’s blind son.

The kid is a star.  Stole the movie.

Also, thought Anna Paquin (who I am not familar with) did an outstanding

job.   In the bonus feature she talked about playing the part of a christian

even though shes not into that stuff.   I thought she totally captured the essence of…that whole thing.

Made me wanna watch a highlight vid of 99   🙂

Ana Paquin plays Snooky in True Blood.  If you’ve never seen it you should.

There were many corny moments in the movie.  It wasn’t great, or even good.

But I did find myself pridefully thinking “Yes!” during the reenactment of the historic plays Kurt made.

Well, I might have liked it more than you.   I mean, I hated the ‘message’ of

“you can make it in this country if you just believe and persevere”.   That whole “If-you-are-rugged-faithful and work hard, you too can make it

under capitalism.”    Obviously, that message is ultra-problematic and hides

a shit-ton of things behind the curtain.

So, ‘that’ part of all these movies is awful and barely watchable.

But leaving that aside  🙂   — I probly liked it more than you.  I was expecting it to be WAY worse.   I thought the actor who played Kurt captured the essence of ‘Kurtness’ and the sports scenes were fine.

It was interesting how they depicted Martz.   He only had a few short scenes but there was a lot there.   Who knows how fair any of that was.

I remember thinking they always make out DV to be the good cop and Martz the bad cop — but DV had to have known what a prick Martz was being.  So he must have been ok with that approach.   So why does DV get to be the lovable old guy?

I wondered as i watched, if Kurt and Brenda would have stayed together if he had not gotten the pro contract.   The lord must have wanted them to be 2gether.

I think it’s complicated. I think if you met DV away from football he would seem like a lovable old grandpa.  DV Grandpa. And that would be who he really is when he’s not coaching.

But when he’s coaching he becomes DV Coach and all the competitiveness, hardness, severity, etc that comes with being a head coach comes out.My brother used to work for my hometown newspaper and he scored a sideline pass from the sports dept for the Rams/Eagles game in 99. He used the pass in the first half and I used it in the second.    Remember it was a meaningless game for the Rams. It was the last game of the year, the starters only played the first half.  At one point in the game an Eagles player hit a Rams player late as he was going out of bounds. It happened right in front of me. The ref ignored it.  DV came sprinting over and was screaming at the ref, “throw the f**king flag! That c**ksucker hit him when he was out of bounds!”  It was weird seeing DV respond  like that. It seemed really out of character at first, but when you think about it there’s so much pressure on these guys, and they are hyper-competitive and emotional to begin with, so it shouldn’t  be a surprise when they ‘lose it’ in the heat of battle. I was waiting for the ref to flag DV but he just pretended he didn’t hear it. Anyway, that’s who DV is when he’s coaching.

DV has a fishing camp near my home in Pa that he bought when he was with the Eagles.  When my best friend was elected county commissioner, he sent DV an email asking him if he could use his image to promote tourism in our county since he enjoyed spending time there. DV said sure and sent him all these photos without even a single question. There were no conditions. He didn’t ask for money, there were no contracts or lawyers involved. He didn’t demand to approve anything before it was used.  Pretty stupid on his part, actually. ;). After all, he didn’t know my friend from Adam, but that’s who DV is when he’s not coaching.

Well, I’m holding out for the Russell Wilson/Ciara movie.

DV has talked about times where he had to rein Martz in. Where he advised him to be less of a prick (not DV’s word). His remarks spefically involved how Martz treated other coaches. I would imagine it all would have been a lot worse if DV hadn’t been that way. A lot of what Martz did to Warner was because DV promoted Kurt to the #2 spot and said that’s final. Martz didn;t know Kurt before, DV did, and DV wanted what he wanted. I always thought Martz took that out on Kurt. But then Trent Green was a Martz favorite, and Trent told Kurt that Martz always gave his qb a hard time until they proved themselves.
