gurley
279 carries
64 receptions
343 total touches
that’s good. maybe a little higher than i would have wanted it going into game 16. but most likely he sits. so i’m fine with him being there. i’d even be fine with 366 touches which is what he was on track for. but again. a tad high for my liking. i’d want it to be ideally around 350 touches – no more than that for the regular season.
what’s more is what he did with those touches. very efficient. he wound up with a 4.7 yards per carry average. but what’s even better than THAT? he got better as the season progressed.
first 8 games
161 carries 686 yards 4.4 ypc
last 7 games
118 carries 619 yards 5.3 ypc
that’s likely a reflection of defenses adjusting to the fact that goff was better than anyone anticipated. still. that bodes well for the future i think.
and even in the receiving game gurley got better as the season went on.
first 8 games
29 receptions 338 yards 11.7 ypc
last 7 games
35 receptions 450 yards 12.9 ypc
again his efficiency increases in the second half. but what’s also more notable is his touches go up. and that’s minus the last game which he won’t likely play anyway. but maybe mcvay is gaining more trust in gurley in the receiving game? might we see an expanded role next year for todd? not necessarily more touches. but in how they use him as a receiver. i sure hope so. with that guy’s explosion, he could be so much more dangerous i feel as a pass receiver. plus i would like to see more brown in the running game to take a load off gurley.
run pass ratio.
rams have ran the ball 465 times this season. good for 8th in the league.
rams have attempted 484 passes this season. 24th in the league.
rams rank 26th in run pass ratio according to this website https://www.teamrankings.com/nfl/stat/passing-play-pct at 54.32%. i’m not exactly sure how they arrive a that percentage. but they are a very balanced team.
but. they pass the ball very effectively as they rank 17th in passing yards percentage at 66.55%. and jared goff leads the league in yards per completion at 12.9.
going forward i’d like goff to be a little more efficient. i’d like to see his completion percentage go a little higher even if that means sacrificing some yards. the end result would be the same in terms of yards per attempt which is at a pretty robust 8.0 ypa. but for me. sacrificing some explosiveness for more efficiency would be better for the offense i think. now if he could maintain both at a high level well that would be something else.
overall. i think the way mcvay managed this offense was ideal. he didn’t overwork gurley. but he also gave goff plenty of support in the run game, so he wasn’t too overwhelmed.
