Rams defense will take a step back this year

The Los Angeles Rams’ offseason was littered with key losses throughout their defense. Gone are defensive end Chris Long, middle linebacker James Laurinaitis, primary cornerback Janoris Jenkins and safety Rodney McLeod, among others. This unit still has talent, primary on the defensive line, but another step back might be inevitable.

    Rams

ESPN projections: 47.5 sacks, 11.8 interceptions, 8.3 fumble recoveries, 3.3 touchdowns, 374.1 points against, 5,432.3 yards against

Over or under: Take the under on the sacks, interceptions, fumble recoveries and touchdowns; take the over on the points and yards against. Yes, this group is a lot thinner this year. The defensive line — headlined by Aaron Donald and four other first-round picks — should put consistent pressure on the quarterback, but the second and third levels are a big question. Alec Ogletree will try to fill Laurinaitis’ void at middle linebacker and Trumaine Johnson will be tested while covering every team’s top receiver. And then there will be two key guys returning from injury — defensive end Robert Quinn, who missed the last four games last season because of back surgery, and cornerback E.J. Gaines, who spent all of 2015 recovering from foot surgery.

The new guy. We will see how he does. I liked Wagoner. He has a way to go to equal him. imo

This defense needs Gaines, then they should be fine. I really only like 3 CBs on the outside. Tru, Gaines, and Roberson.

You don’t like Troy Hill? I like TH (so far).

You know, this defense could be the best yet under Fisher too. Losing Long was sad but he hasn’t been productive in years. I just wished he could have tasted success with the Rams. He’ll get plenty of it now though. I think Olgletree could be a big upgrade over Lauranitis and the current group of CBs is good enough to absorb JJenk’s loss. The big question is how much McCleod’s loss will hurt.

I think they will take a step back.

Just the transition from JL to Ogeltree will take some time. Then you have Quinn’s questionable back–somewhat thinner perhaps on the line, certainly thinner at DB. I think it will be a transition year.

But the offense HAS to be better…right? So that may help the defense.

He had a good game last week, but I don’t think of him as starter material yet. I really think of him as bubble material at this time.

    Interesting.

I thought having ‘Ram’ in your name implied you were an actual Rams fan?

‘Tree will make you forget ‘Laura’ at MLB.

    Or he won’t.

But either way a true Rams fan would blindly assume the defense would be better despite any personnel losses.
