znModeratorRams announce hiring of 3 new coordinators on McVay’s staff
https://www.yahoo.com/sports/rams-announce-hiring-3-coordinators-mcvays-staff-200533959–nfl.html
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Rams have hired Denver outside linebackers coach Brandon Staley as their new defensive coordinator.
The Rams also announced the hirings of offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell and special teams coordinator John Bonamego on Monday.
The three key members of Sean McVay’s coaching staff will be formally introduced Wednesday, nearly a month after Staley got the job.
The 37-year-old Staley is an unorthodox choice to replace NFL veteran Wade Phillips, who was fired by McVay last month after the Rams missed the playoffs despite finishing 9-7.
Staley has only three years of NFL experience and has never held a coaching position with nearly as much prominence as his new job with the Rams. Before he spent last season with the Broncos and the previous two seasons in the same job with the Chicago Bears, he was a defensive coordinator at Division III John Carroll and FCS school James Madison.
O’Connell is the Rams’ first offensive coordinator since McVay’s rookie season in 2017, when current Green Bay coach Matt LaFleur had the job. McVay calls Los Angeles’ plays himself, and he split the coordinator duties between assistants Shane Waldron and Aaron Kromer last season.
The 34-year-old O’Connell is a former journeyman NFL quarterback who spent the past three seasons on the Washington Redskins’ staff, including last season as their offensive coordinator. He has also been a quarterbacks coach for Cleveland and Washington.
Bonamego replaces John Fassell, who left the Rams’ staff after eight seasons to join the Dallas Cowboys.
Bonamego has been a special teams coordinator for 13 seasons during seven stints with five different NFL teams over the past two decades, most recently with the Detroit Lions last year. He also had a four-year stint as Central Michigan’s head coach from 2015-18.

znModeratorJohn Bonamego had Lions special teams rolling
Jan 23, 2019
The Detroit Lions added John Bonamego as their new special teams coordinator this week, and that could be good news as it relates to getting the group back to being elite. The stats say that under Bonamego’s direction, the team was pretty darn good against their league competition. In his final season, Bonamego led Detroit’s special teams to a middle of the pack finish, which might not seem impressive but is when you consider the direction things have gone lately.
Veteran DetroitLions.com reporter Mike O’Hara pointed out where Bonamego had the team before he left for the Central Michigan job, and the stats say that the team was pretty darn good compared to some of their league competition.
“Detroit Lions; special teams ranked tied for 15th under John Bonamego in 2014, his last season with the team. Other NFC North teams: Vikings 10, Bears 26, Packers 32. source: Rick Gosselin annual special teams rankings,” O’Hara tweeted.
By comparison, the Lions did not live up to expectations on the special teams side of the ball this season nor were they close to that good or consistent. Joe Marciano, who took over for Bonamego when he left, started as the coordinator of the group out of camp, but was replaced around midseason after return game troubles and penalty problems doomed the entire group.
…
Bonamego was the team’s coordinator just before Marciano took over from 2013-2014. With him at the helm, the team produced some decent results with both Sam Martin and Matt Prater before taking the head coaching job at Central Michigan in 2015, his alma mater. Typically an engaging presence, Bonamego was always hands-on in Detroit with the group, pushing them to be the best they could be.

The Rams are hiring John Bonamego, who spent last season with the Lions, as special teams coordinator, according to sources. Bonamego replaces John Fassel, who departed for the Cowboys.from the wiki:
John Frank Bonamego
John Frank Bonamego (born August 14, 1963) is an American football coach. He has two decades of college and pro coaching experience. He played college football at Central Michigan and also was head coach of the team from 2015 to 2018.
Bonamego has also coached for Maine, Lehigh and Army at the college level. He has been an assistant for the Jacksonville Jaguars, Green Bay Packers and New Orleans Saints in the NFL.
On June 18, 2015, Bonamego announced that he was diagnosed with tonsil cancer, but that the cancer was caught early enough and was “very treatable’. On August 21, Bonamego announced that he had completed his radiation treatment at the University of Michigan Cancer Center in Ann Arbor.
Early years
Bonamego graduated from Paw Paw High School in Paw Paw, Michigan. His father was an officer in the Army. He lived in eight zip codes-–including military bases in Italy and Ethiopia–-before he turned 18.
Playing career
Bonamego played wide receiver and quarterback at Central Michigan University. He earned his degree in health and fitness in 1987.
Coaching career
Beginnings
In 1987, Bonamego coached at Mount Pleasant High School in Michigan and was a player-coach in Europe with the Verona Redskins.
College
Bonamego served as a college assistant for 11 years, coaching for Maine from 1988 to 1991, Lehigh in 1992 and Army from 1993 to 1998.
Jacksonville Jaguars
Bonamego first joined the NFL in 1999 as an assistant special teams coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars. He held the position for three seasons before serving his final year with the team as special teams coordinator in 2002. That season, the Jaguars blocked four kicks and were second in the league in kickoff coverage. Punter Chris Hanson was also selected to Pro Bowl.
Green Bay Packers
In 2003, Bonamego joined the Green Bay Packers as the special teams coordinator and served in that capacity for three seasons under Mike Sherman. The club had four game-winning field goals in 2004, the most by the team since the 1970 merger. In 2005, the Packers had the NFL’s longest punt return for a touchdown (85 yards vs. Chicago), didn’t allow a return touchdown, blocked two PATs and a field goal attempt and ranked fifth in the NFC in punt return average.
New Orleans Saints
In 2006, Bonamego was hired by Sean Payton as special teams coordinator for the New Orleans Saints and held the job for two seasons. Bonamego is remembered for calling for what turned out to be a successful blocked punt by Steve Gleason in the first game at the Superdome after Hurricane Katrina. New Orleans finished 2006 tied for 10th in the NFL in the annual special teams rankings formulated by The Dallas Morning News. The Saints ranked sixth in the NFL in opponent punt return average (7.0) and fourth in the NFC in kickoff return average (23.0). New Orleans did not allow a kickoff return of more than 40 yards and the longest punt return the special teams surrendered was 31 yards. Bonamego returned to the Saints for the 2011 season as the assistant special teams coordinator.
Miami Dolphins
After two seasons in New Orleans, replaced special teams coordinator Keith Armstrong for the Miami Dolphins and first-year head coach Tony Sparano. Bonamego and Sparano had previously coached together with the Jaguars from in 2002 when Sparano was tight ends coach. Bonamego held the job for two plus seasons.
Detroit Lions
Bonamego spent two seasons –- 2013 and 2014 — with the Detroit Lions as the special teams coordinator. He awarded “Bono Gear” to players who stood out on special teams. He also handed out traveling trophies after every Lions victory to the special-teams player who led in categories like blocks, tackles or being the first player down to cover kickoffs.
Central Michigan Chippewas
On February 9, 2015, Bonamego was introduced as the 28th football head coach in the history of Central Michigan University. Bonamego is the first alum to serve as Central Michigan’s head coach since Bill Kelly from 1951-1966. This was Bonamego’s first head coaching position and his first college coaching position since he served as an assistant for Army from 1993-1998.
On November 23, 2018, Bonamego was fired by Central Michigan after the team suffered the worst season in team history.
Second stint with Lions
The Lions announced on January 22, 2019 that they have rehired Bonamego as special teams coordinator.

New LA Rams RB coach Brown signals fullback likely returning to offense
When the last game of the 2019 season ended for the LA Rams, questions began to form over the team’s running game. After all, the team managed to reduce the workload on featured running back Todd Gurley by eliminating rushing attempts. Despite a backup runner who needs touches to be effective in Malcolm Brown, and despite using a third round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft to select big-play back Darrell Henderson, the Rams simply didn’t rush as often. RB coach Thomas Brown may have something to say about that in 2020.

znModeratorI would have to say the GSOT tho admittedly I am biased.
Mahomes is just a beyond comparison qb, but, the GSOT didn’t just have Warner, they had Faulk and Bruce and Holt and as we all know it doesn’t stop there.
Mahomes has good weapons but he doesn’t have Faulk, Bruce, and Holt. That’s 3 hall of famers (including Warner obviously) and counting.
500 points a season, 3 in a row. When the rules were not quite as pro-offense as they are now.

znModeratorBut you can tell him, we are going to trade or cut your ass if you don’t take this pay cut…
I’m thinking that is where they are at, and the Rams know they can’t trade him…
They can’t cut him either. If they cut TG it would subtract 8.4 M from the Rams cap (and at present they have 20 M in cap space).
I don’t think trying to be tough with the guy would accomplish anything. Besides I don’t think he’s done.
Backs have been productive before on arthritic knees. Heck Faulk was productive his final year with the Rams and at that point his knee was far worse than TG’s is now. TG has already showed both that he’s not his old self AND that he can still be productive, especially in the redzone, where he is instinctive and fierce. It won’t be the old Gurley but he can still produce.
Is the OL an issue in the running game? Probably–looks that way. Can it improve? Sure, if they play their cards right. Will that mean we see the old Gurley? No–but as I said he can still be productive and an improved OL could only help with that.

I don’t think Brown was third or fourth on the list, they might have been waiting for the announcement because of recruiting, he brought in some fantastic high school players, so there could have been an agreement with South Carolina to wait until the signing period was over.Brown has made every place better where he has been and he had the OC tag too under Mark Richt in Miami, so that is a plus as well and he’s young with energy and should be a major upgrade over Skip Peete and I expect a fullback to be added to the running back room.

Professional career
Atlanta Falcons
Brown was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the sixth round of the 2008 NFL Draft. His rookie season was cut short by a horse collar tackle during the preseason, landing him on injured reserve. He was waived prior to the following season on September 5, 2009.
Cleveland Browns
Brown was signed to the Cleveland Browns practice squad on November 10, 2009. He was promoted to the active roster on January 2, 2010 after linebacker David Veikune was placed on injured reserve. He was released June 17, 2010.
Coaching career
In 2012, Brown was hired as running backs coach for the Chattanooga Mocs. In 2013, Brown was hired at the same position for the Marshall Thundering Herd.
On February 24, 2014, Brown was hired to be the Wisconsin Badgers running back coach.
On February 16, 2015, Brown returned to his alma mater as the running backs coach at University of Georgia under head coach Mark Richt, under whom Brown played. The move united the position coach of the 2014 NCAA rushing yards leader, Melvin Gordon, with one of the nation’s most prolific returning running backs in Nick Chubb.
On December 30 2015, Brown was hired to be the running backs coach and offensive coordinator at the University of Miami, where he would work under Mark Richt again.
On January 9, 2019, Brown was named the running backs coach at the University of South Carolina.
