What MAGA Republicans say during their Fox News appearances and what they’re actually thinking can be two different things. Lauren Windsor, a liberal activist and executive director of American Family Voices, has been doing a type of undercover work by acting like a MAGA Republican and getting prominent Republicans to tell her what they’re really thinking — and according to New York Times reporter Trip Gabriel, she can be quite convincing.
Gabriel, in an article published on October 7, explains, “Posing as a true believer — in (President Donald) Trump or a stolen 2020 election — Ms. Windsor approaches Republican leaders at party gatherings and tries to coax them into revealing things that they might wish to keep in the GOP family.”
Windsorm has been able to convince MAGA Republicans that she is one of them and has, according to Gabriel, “turned a hidden camera, a Tennessee drawl and a knack for disarming her targets with words of sympathetic conservatism into a loaded political weapon.”
“Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio confided in her that Donald J. Trump would soon announce he was running again for president in 2024,” Gabriel reports. “Glenn Youngkin, the Republican nominee for governor of Virginia, revealed to her that he could not publicly press his anti-abortion agenda for fear of losing independent voters…. Her encounter in December 2020 with Tommy Tuberville, then a senator-elect from Alabama, elicited the first real evidence that some Republicans in the Senate would reject the Electoral College votes certifying Mr. Biden’s victory — a move based on groundless claims of fraud.”
Windsor, according to Gabriel, hasn’t been shy about saying outrageous things she doesn’t actually believe in the hope that Republicans will agree with them. For example, she once told far-right Republican Cecil Bell, Jr. — who serves in the Texas House of Representatives — “This is a Christian state, and Democrats are not Christian.” Bell wasn’t the least bit offended:
Gabriel notes that Windsor describes herself as an “advocacy journalist,” adding that “her methods fall beyond the pale of mainstream journalism, where reporters generally shy away from assuming false identities and secretly recording conversations.” And Windsor, according to Gabriel, “says her stings are justified by Republicans’ efforts to spread disinformation about the election and to weaken the nation’s democratic underpinnings through restrictive new voting laws and measures taking greater control over how elections are run.”
Windsor told the Times, “Extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures…. Acting like you’re one of them — you’re going to elicit different answers than if you have a reporter in somebody’s face and they know you’re a journalist.”

TBH for me a key number here is the targets. No QB in a healthy state of mind WANTS to be throwing at Ramsey. But his coverage plan makes it really, really hard to intentionally avoid him now. Rams thin at players who can unlock that versatility as they monitor Williams’ status.They moved Long into the slot when Williams left the game (he had not played a single snap there all season nor did to my knowledge in camp). Burgess played some slot, some Star and has played (and practiced) a little CB. We’ll see what happens – longer recovery week helps too.

I love this from a defensive coach. He gets it. And also speaking from experience. PAP blocks take a certain level of confidence, especially on the front side. You have to sell run and you’re way more confident in your technique if you’ve been running the ball.You need to stop the feet of the defensive lineman and they have to believe you’re bringing it. If you don’t, they sense pass right away and can attempt to get off the block quicker making you a) scared to sell the run next time and/or b) getting beat quicker

So some of this was expected I guess.
The other issue that’s out of Morris’ hands is personnel change. JJ3 was incredible in this defense and Hill was so much better than Long. Fuller will be fine, but Rapp is a big nickel, not a split zone safety. I was really hoping Burgess would grab that other safety spot.
lastly, wth is up with Williams. last year he gave up 34 catches on 68 attempts. this year, he has already given up 20 receptions on 29 attempts. he’s on pace to see 4 times the amount of passes he saw last season.
it’s hard to say it’s Morris’ scheme messing with him when Ramsey is still the 5th ranked CB.
What I think Morris could get better at is disguising the coverage presnap. And he has to generate a pass rush somehow. these dbs cannot cover forever. And by that, I mean he is going to have to scheme a pass rush, given this team’s lack of pass rush talent.
Lastly, Kenny Young is not a starting ILB. But for whatever reason, this is the best the Rams can do. so the run defense will struggle with him in there. The answer? Right now there isn’t one. But I’m hoping Earnest Jones can win that job sooner than later.
So I’m in the camp of “it’s multiple issues, not just the coach or not just the players”.
1 thing I know for sure: Williams needs to step his game up or Morris needs to do a better job of putting Williams in a better position to play better. After that, I think the D will be ok.
znModeratorIMO? Morris doesn’t scheme for them and prep them the way Staley did. It’s partly that it’s not his defense. It may partly be that Morris has never had a strong defense where he was either the DC or the HC with a defensive orientation. It may be that Morris is McVay’s Marmie.
I also know that according to PFF stats, Donald had one of the worst games of his career the other day:

Aaron Donald had a @PFF pass-rushing grade of 51.5 against the Cardinals, the lowest of his career.What else? Well among other things, Arizona knew how to pick on Long. The Rams run D in general is poor, which hurts everything else too (they’re 27th in yards per attempt allowed).
It could be that Morris isn’t moving too fast when facing the double whammy of both coaching a team he doesn;t know and that doesn’t know him, while also learning a scheme that is not his.
I will say this though–the Rams were disappointing all around on Sunday, and that’s an old pattern. They have sometimes underperformed the week after getting it up to beat either a tough opponent or a team they want to beat bad (like the Patz last year).
Here’s that pattern:
They beat Tampa on the road last year then lost to SF the following week.
They beat the Patz decisively last year then lost to the Jets the following week.
In 2019 they beat Chicago to make up for the 2018 loss to them, and then the following week were no-shows against Baltimore.Those are just some games that come to mind. It’s a pattern we’ve seen before and I don’t like it much.

As would be expected because of the flexibility of Ramsey’s role and the various alignments of Metcalf, Raheem Morris believes a lot of Ramsey/Metcalf is possible Thursday night, as well as a lot of Williams/Lockett. Hearing water also wet, per sources with knowledge.Again, the biggest point of Ramsey’s expanded role is the opportunity for wider options of movement as receivers also move and the hope he can affect the ball on more snaps (pass AND run). That was the vision that started evolving last year on into this one.
Leonard Floyd says he has been working extra before and after practice with Reggie Scott to keep his ankle managed after dealing with an initial injury in camp. He says it’s now feeling great and he’s ready to go (has not missed a game regardless).

I guess I’ll just say it again before rolling it over – if you’ve been following along you’ll know that it’s definitely not always going to be perfect between Stafford and his WRs here as they work out their chemistry in their first several live games together (ever!). The point,and apologies for being a broken record, is the problem-solving in real time. Noted after seeing them troubleshoot all spring and summer – it was always going to open with some highs&some lows. The point is how they work through it (& how they can evolve&change in the pass game)!
I think you can expect another game or quarter or coupla quarters where things are off at some point here in the early stretch. You can also probably expect fireworks. It’s all not going to happen perfectly all at once but as we have seen when good QBs join new teams, if it
starts to click every week consistently down the stretch and you stay ahead in the win column prior, you can make quite a lot out of that.
Anyway, not really a sexy or spicy take, and I understand all the questions and comments I’ve gotten, but that’s simply how they’re approaching it – realistically, and trying to find the balance between patience and urgency in the early games re. the build.
