First session of full-field team drills over (11-on-11). In terms of specifically workload on a second consecutive high-volume day, Matthew Stafford appears able to, as Sean McVay would say, “throw it all around the yard”. Getting good looks from Bengals secondary too.

Rams head coach Sean McVay said QB John Wolford hurt the fingernail on his throwing thumb in yesterday’s joint practice with Bengals. Made it “weird” for Wolford to grip the ball. Wolford’s status Saturday’s preseason game TBD.

Kyren Williams is getting some work in the passing game from Matthew Stafford today and looks pretty smooth out there.

Bot a good look for AD, BUT lets keep the same energy for Collins ripping off Floyds helmet and throwing it at him while also trying to throw haymakers. just before this incident happened.

A furious McVay jumped into the scrum that ended practice. “I don’t know what I was, I just see guys swinging and some guys have helmets on, some don’t, you just never know what can occur. My biggest concern is unnecessary injuries …” (added that he didn’t think anyone got hurt)

    Gary Klein@LATimesklein

McVay: “I don’t know exactly what instigated it. I think in some instances teams defending each other. Fortunately, my understanding is nobody got hurt and we’ll move on from it. Not going to make a bigger deal than what it is. Not going to look at pointing fingers.”

Just reviewed 49ers first half with Trey Lance. OL wasn’t great, but … 1. His eye level dropped as soon as he saw a free rusher 2. He missed 3 throws where you simply have to complete or hit the receiver in stride 3. Missed a deep read with Deebo running open vs. faked blitz

ASIDE from the fighting, here’s a thread of other takeaways from a shortened Rams/Bengals practice…

    1. Akers, Jefferson, Lewis, Henderson among those who didn’t practice. Williams/Funk, Atwell/Skow, Garrett/Whitley among those who repped in snap share in absence (1s & 2s).

    2. Perkins ran the 2s with Wolford (DEPARTED THUMBNAIL) out today. Lots of work with Harris, McCutcheon, Powell, Funk. Williams again lots of work with Stafford. Looks confident and smooth.

    3. Powell also still repped 1 on kickoff/punt return, as expected.

    4. Post-fight (one of them, anyway), Ramsey had an INT first play back.

    5. Hoecht running special teams is amusing, meaning as a compliment. He’s about a head and shoulders taller/broader than everyone else out there and getting downfield to enforce. DL raving about he and Williams’ camps.

    6. Durant is really getting thrown into it, no pun intended. Had been noted by Snead/McVay at draft but really impressed with what he does on outside, where some projected him pre-draft into slot alone.

    7. Less tempo to open (pre-planned). More full field.

    8. I’ve been wrong before (a lot!) but I think Yeast makes this team.

    9. Atwell had a clear drop on a deep ball (otherwise TD). Immediately McVay goes directly to encourage him on sideline after failed play.

    10. Something I almost never see: Kupp drop on a beautiful deep ball.

10., cont. …he knew it, too. Interesting to see a perfectionist troubleshoot himself after something like that (last fully-open practice of the year). Learn so much in neat human moments.

    11. Early in 11-on-11s, I’m standing next to Kevin Demoff behind the end zone. Stafford

unfurls a ball on a corner route to Tyler Higbee that legitimately made no sense, the way it dropped in for him. Demoff, in an awed tone: “Holy shit. Nothing about that looked right, until the end.”

    from https://theramswire.usatoday.com/2022/08/22/rams-matthew-stafford-nfl-top-100-players-mathieu-david-jones/?taid=6305b07a398b30000150661b&utm_campaign=trueanthem&utm_medium=trueanthem&utm_source=twitter

After making the NFL’s Top 100 Players of 2022 list at No. 27, several players from around the league shared what makes Stafford so good. Check out the full video here.

Cooper Kupp: “You talk about being reactive as a quarterback, you take what the defense gives you. They say it all the time. I think a lot of times, he says, ‘Screw that, I’m gonna take what I want.’ What he does with his eyes and manipulating defenses, ‘I’m gonna move this guy and throw where I want,’ that I think is a special trait of his.”

Tyrann Mathieu: “Man, Stafford is so underrated from just a pure talent perspective. All the side-arm throws and the no-look passes, he’s been doing those things.”

Chester Rogers: “I think he’s been a top-five quarterback since he’s been in the league, he’s just been in Detroit. Now he’s in L.A., he’s shining.”

Lavonte David: “It was kind of like night-and-day from what they had before to what they’ve got now with him. 30-something seconds left, for him to keep his poise and not settle to go to overtime, that’s why you’ve got a guy like him. He got them to the Super Bowl, he made plays when they needed him to make plays.”

Chandler Jones: “His quarterback vision is tremendous. He has a timer in his head that is tremendous.”

Sean McVay says the Rams must behave themselves in Cincinnati: “We have no place for fighting. We have to be able to get 2 good days of work. These opportunities really matter, and we can’t afford to miss it for dumb shit.”

At this point, I’d almost take Chandler Brewer over Bobby Evans on the roster. Rams have invested three years in developing him. Brings same tackle/guard versatility. He’s simply the better player.

The Rams did their cuts that were due this week on Saturday, so the big wave of them is due a week from today. Travel day for them (and for me) to Cincy. Good questions!

The Persians sent pressure around the flank and collapsed the pocket from behind.

But they had to cheat to do it. So it really doesn’t count.

Do people not watch 4th Quarters?

On another board, years ago back in the days when everyone defended Goff no matter what, which came before the later days where many attacked him no matter what, I was once in a debate about 4th quarter comebacks. At that time Goff did not have that many with the Rams (though he did at Cal). It was early in his career. 2017 I think. So one thing that got said was, we’ll get a better sense of him when has more of them. That got taken in that time as attacking Goff (which, remember, was at a time when you weren’t “supposed to.”) The main argument against this imagined slight was that 4th quarter comebacks aren’t really important. I chimed in and said yes they are–a good team will play other good teams, and scores will often be close, so you want a qb who is good in that situation–and when Goff gets more of those it will be a good thing. Since that was taken as slamming Goff (at a time when you weren’t supposed to do that),  the comment attracted all sorts of heat. Melee weapons were used. Longbowmen showered the world with arrows. (Persians to the Spartans at Thermopylae: our arrows will darken the sun. Spartan response: then we will fight in the shade.) The idea that 4th quarter comebacks mean anything got angrily dismissed.

Now years later no one complains about Stafford’s 4th quarter comebacks. 😎

I certainly don’t. I have long since thought 4th quarter comebacks were one of the keys to measuring a qb’s greatness.

….happened to talk to a young cop, in a courthouse today. I asked him what changes he’d make if he could. “…more money for more social services, more mental health services.” I replied: “Really? I was not expecting that answer from you.” He said: “Every officer i know feels that way” Make of that what you will. w v

Interesting. Maybe one day that becomes universally true and cops then speak up.

The Rams’ defense is for real. The depth being displayed in the preseason may just be a small piece to the puzzle right now, but their ability to draft and develop young talent in late rounds is a framework that many other teams in this league wish they could replicate.
