znModeratorRams Fans United@RamsFansUnitedIt’s not easy being a Ram on the last year of your rookie deal: Akers, Van Jefferson and now Jones. Tutu Atwell i’m looking at you…

The Rams offensive line Week 1 vs Detroit will probably be:LT Joe Noteboom
LG Jonah Jackson
C Steve Avila
RG Kevin Dotson
RT Warren McClendonStill hoping Havenstein can return
znModeratorSo the answer is obvious if people got out their emotions.
well then my guess is jones’ health isn’t right. his knee is worse than we know. the titans know this as was possibly disclosed by the rams thus the extremely low compensation. but then why would the titans want jones? possibly a better scheme fit?
I don’t think it;s that the knee is bad, but recovering from the knee meant he couldn’t practice and keep up with the younger guys.
As with all trades, if he doesn’t pass a Titans physical, the deal is probably off.

last year the lions ranked #5 in ypc and #2 rush yards after contact, while ernest jones ranked #7 (among 82 lb) vs the run.the rams held the lions to 3.2 ypc and 79 rush yards last year, both were the 3rd lowest rush numbers turned in by the lions in their 20 games.
here’s where pff ranked ej last season among the 82 qualifying linebackers:
#13 overall
#7 against the run
#6 pass rush
#54 in coverage
znModeratorESPN NFL Insider Jeremy Fowler is reporting that former Dallas Cowboys NT Neville Gallimore, fresh off his release from the Miami Dolphins, is on a plane to Los Angeles, California to sign on with the LA Rams
So what does Neville Gallimore bring to the defense?
While more of a rotational player than starter, Gallimore is a solid nose tackle/defensive tackle type who can make tackles, apply some pressure on the quarterback, stuff the run, and has a dependable veteran presence to ensure a consistent quality of play. At 6-foot-2 and 302 pounds, Gallimore is a sturdy and powerful player to join the defensive front line.
The Rams still have to sign players to their 16-player practice squad. Stay tuned.
znModeratorBrett Kollmann@BrettKollmannOkay there has to be more to this. No way Ernest Jones is only worth a 2026 5th rounder. Absolutely no way.
znModeratorRams 53-man roster: One takeaway for every player who made the cut
I am just going to isolate her superlative reviews of new players:
Beaux Limmer, center: Limmer impressed coaches with his command at center despite being a rookie. He gives the Rams valuable depth at the position.
Braden Fiske, defensive line: Fiske has versatility on the interior, from the three-technique outward. He had among the most impressive training camps of any Rams player.
Tyler Davis, defensive line: Davis, a rookie, flashed power and explosiveness in his preseason opportunity and the Rams hope he wins more snaps as the season continues.
Jared Verse, outside linebacker: One of the most exciting defensive players the Rams have added in many years, Verse’s power and speed were evident throughout his first training camp with the team.
Josh Wallace, cornerback: A pleasant surprise to the Rams as an undrafted free agent out of Michigan, Wallace has length and has played in big games.
Charles Woods, cornerback: Woods’ handle on the defense as an undrafted free agent was clear deep into the preseason. He got his hands on the ball frequently in camp.
Kam Curl, safety: Curl immediately looked like one of the steals of free agency when training camp began. He is rangy and smart, and will start in one of the “high” spots for the Rams but can play anywhere.

I would be super excited if I were a Titans fan. Jones is a phenomenal fit for them. Should be an extremely blitz heavy team this year and EJ is one of the best pass rushing ILBs in the game.eddie pontin@thethethethe456
Genuine question Mr. Whitworth, do you think the Rams would have paid him if the situation were different? I’m seeing a chunk of things like “Ernest wasn’t completely focused on the team” and even some “in bad shape” ones. He seemed to be a player they loved and raved about!!Andrew Whitworth@AndrewWhitworth
Yes. Definitely
Ernest is great dude. Love him.
But clearly health or performance wasn’t there. Which led to the decision.
Name a player the Rams haven’t take care of that earned it since 2017.So the answer is obvious if people got out their emotions.
znModeratorInvaderRam Moderator zn wrote: Could it be that that rubbed McV the wrong way? if this is true, then i would tend to criticize him for making this decision. i’m not saying this is true. but if it’s true. i don’t agree with it.
Yeah, you don’t get to be “rubbed the wrong way” if you are the coach, not by contract shit. He can get rubbed the wrong way about attitude towards coaching and teammates and effort and all that, but not by contract stuff. Whatever. This looks like an error to me, a bigger error than trading Woods which didn’t turn out to be all that bad in the end. But I dislike this one even more because of Jones’ youth and value. He was under contract for this year, and he would have played this year. So it’s a “value of Jones this year” vs. “value of the trade long term” equation, and I think Jones had more value to the Rams immediately than this trade does for the long term. That’s all. No biggie. I will root for the Rams just the same, but this doesn’t pencil out, imo.
I still feel something’s going on here, more than meets the eye. It’s nothing like not signing London Fletcher. But still…. And they kept 5 ILBs, an unusual number, which suggests they’re not all that certain about that position and the players they have. I agree that the coach should never act like he’s been “rubbed the wrong way,” but then, every once in a while, McV shows that he can have that kind of tendency, so it wouldn’t surprise me.
It could be something as simple as the Rams don’t want to keep a leader around who gripes about not getting an extension….and Jones did gripe a bit.
I know this is not one of those boards where a minor criticism of a popular coach can lead to death threats and outraged accustations of treason. Nevertheless let me quickly add that I rank McV very high as a coach overall. As you guys know. (I have residual trauma reactions from old poster wars so I reflexively feel compelled to add that I am a long way from being on the fire McVay! bandwagon………)
znModeratorthey do have 11 dbs. is that unusual? does this mark a shift in philosophy? how many dbs did they carry last year?
I don’t remember last year. But 11 is unusual. But then they also have 5 ILBs which is also unusual.
znModeratorTop Takeaways from McVay’s press conference on initial 53-man roster for 2024 season
Stu Jackson
WOODLAND HILLS, Calif. – Rams head coach Sean McVay met with local media on Tuesday to discuss the team’s initial 53-man roster for the 2024 season, including the decision to trade linebacker Ernest Jones IV to the Titans, running back Kyren Williams serving as the team’s punt returner this season and more.
Here are some of the top takeaways from that conversation, which you can watch below.
Sean McVay on initial 53-man roster for 2024, decision to trade Ernest Jones IV to Titans & current inside linebacker group
Trading Jones “football decision” that was “best for our football team”
McVay said trading Jones was a decision “we felt like was best for the football team.”
“He’s a great guy was amazing for us for a few years, but we felt like this was best for our football team,” McVay said.
McVay said he and Jones had multiple conversations, and that Jones “couldn’t have been more of a pro.”
Finding another way for Williams to impact the game
Last season showed just how explosive Williams can be with the ball in his hands, whether as a runner or pass-catcher. Now, the Rams will add punt returner to Williams’ duties.
McVay made the announcement as part of his response to wide receiver Xavier Smith not making the initial 53.
“It’s another opportunity for him to get touches and impact the game,” McVay said. “And you feel comfortable with that because of the confidence in Blake Corum and Ronnie Rivers being able to spell him if need be. So that was what has made it tough for X. He didn’t do anything not to win the punt return job, it’s just Kyren is a guy that we want to continue to have different ways that he can impact the game, and that’s one that’s going to be reflected.”
No adding veteran inside linebacker; Rozeboom and Reeder ILB1s
The Rams will not be adding a veteran inside linebacker after trading Jones, according to McVay.
McVay said he feels “really good” about the five they have in Christian Rozeboom, Troy Reeder, Jacob Hummel, Omar Speights and Elias Neal.
znModeratoralso doesn’t sound like speights is the starter. at least not immediately.
True
i’m perplexed.
There has to be more to this story. I suppose maybe it’s the combination of Jones asking for an extension while also being out and not contributing. Could it be that that rubbed McV the wrong way? Not defending it (if that’s what happened) or criticizing it, just speculating.
…
znModeratorAndrew Siciliano@AndrewSicilianoSean McVay on Ernest Jones trade: “Football decision. What we felt was best for the football team. Amazing guy. He was great for us for a few years. But we felt that this was best for our football team.”.McVay says the Rams won’t add a veteran ILB: “You guys are all shocked. But we feel really good about our football team.”
znModeratordoes anyone mind if I mentally pronounce our new MLB’s name as Omar Spatz?
znModeratorWould they have got a 6th rounder for him anyway? Or something?
yeah. that’s what i want to know. cuz that would piss me off even more. even if speights is better than jones. then start both or keep one for depth. i want to understand why.
Wouldn’t they have received a comp pick based on his new salary with his new team? That means it could have been as high as a 3rd. I think a 4th was doable for a starting linebacker, on the cusp of being a pro bowler. At least a 5th. Oh, well. Hopefully, Jourdan will have some insights soon enough.
Jones while good at his role as a 2 down ILB, was a 2 down ILB. He really isn’t a cover guy and Shula has indicated he’s going to keep putting safeties in LB spots depending on the downs, as the Rams have before.
I wanted to see Speights at the other ILB spot alongside Jones, which (assuming he’s a good as he has looked so far) would fix a weakness in the front 7. Now they have Speights at the primary ILB spot and still have the weakness at the other ILB spot.

znModeratorso which is it? are the rams actively trying to trade him or is jones’ camp seeking a trade. or we just don’t know at this point?
According to Rodrigue, letting him know he can seek a trade is their response to Jones wanting an extension. That is, Jones is able to do that if he wants to, which is not the same as the Rams deciding that they will trade him and so as a team are actively seeking trade partners. BTW Jones deleted the post saying he didn’t ask to be traded.
Everything I said there is probably wrong.
Update:
Benjamin Allbright@AllbrightNFLI had heard Atlanta had inquired, but there’s some bad reporting out there on all that. Jones never asked for a trade. The Rams just took some calls.August 27, 2024 at 1:10 pm in reply to: Just a thread for different kindsa interesting things #151887

znModeratorLooks like this game will have 2 subs at OT, which considering it’s Detroit (tough DL) and on the road, does not look promising at first glance.
Where is Greg Robinson when you need him.
Oh wait yeah that’s right, he was put on 5 years probation in 2020 for possessing 150 pounds of weed while crossing an American border checkpoint coming from Mexico, and then arrested again in 2022 in Louisiana with $120 thousand in illegal drugs in his possession.
So he’s probably not available either.
znModeratorfrom https://www.turfshowtimes.com/2024/8/26/24229016/rams-cuts-injury-update-rob-havenstein-roster
.In Sean McVay’s latest update on injured players on Monday, the Rams head coach expressed optimism that guard Jonah Jackson and cornerback Darious Williams are both expected to be ready for Week 1, as is receiver Puka Nacua. However, on the topic of Rob Havenstein, McVay was less sure of his Week 1 availability after suffering an ankle injury at the beginning of August, calling it a “possibility” that the Rams would be without their right tackle.
That news is doubly-bad based on left tackle A.J. Jackson’s two-game suspension to start the season. However, if Havenstein is expected to miss multiple games, it could be in L.A.’s best interest to put him on IR before final cuts are made on Tuesday.
In the past, teams had to keep players on the 53-man roster before putting them on injured reserve, but a new rule allows teams to put up to two players on IR before the 53-man roster cutdown. This means that if the Rams have two players who need to go on IR, they will be able to keep additional two players during final cuts.
It’s a rule change that should be expected to have a significant impact on decisions made on Tuesday and Havenstein would seem to be the Rams player who could be closest to having it apply to his status.</p>
znModeratorJourdan Rodrigue
McVay also addressed starting left tackle Alaric Jackson’s two-game suspension for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy, though declined to share many details about the situation. McVay did allude to the team’s previous awareness of a situation involving Jackson that “could fall under” the league’s personal conduct policy, though was alerted to the suspension itself last week. McVay also said that there was not a legal process involved in Jackson’s suspension.
Jackson, who is also recovering from an ankle injury, participated in the portion of practice media was allowed to watch. The Rams could potentially be without both starting tackles in Detroit, because Rob Havenstein (ankle) may not return by Week 1, McVay said.
“There’s a possibility (he is back for the opener), there is a possibility that he misses it,” McVay said. “So we’ve got to be able to plan accordingly.” Warren McClendon and Joe Noteboom have been rotating in Havenstein’s place.Havenstein is not an injured reserve candidate, said McVay — this would require missing four games.
Starting guard Jonah Jackson (shoulder) practiced, and is expected to be ready for Week 1. So will receiver Puka Nacua (knee) and cornerback Darious Williams (hamstring), who were partial participants Monday.
znModeratorFrom Rams coach Sean McVay addresses possible Ernest Jones trade
Jourdan Rodrigue
LOS ANGELES — Starting inside linebacker Ernest Jones was not present at Monday’s practice, a day after the Los Angeles Rams alerted him to the possibility that he could be traded.
McVay did not say whether he believed Jones would return to the team, only that the Rams are “working through some different things.”
McVay, addressing an ESPN report from Sunday morning that the Rams had given Jones “permission to seek a trade” (thus implying it had been requested), said specifically that Jones did not ask the Rams to move him.
“We never said that he requested a trade,” McVay added, “we’ve had communication with his representation.”
As The Athletic reported Sunday, the Rams let Jones know that he could be traded as they had conversations on the matter with other teams. Jones, a team captain and starter, was expected to play on the final year of his rookie contract after general manager Les Snead said in the spring that the Rams did not intend to extend him. McVay said Jones has handled the situation like a “pro.”
“These are parts of the profession,” he said, “they are not fun parts but they are real parts that you have to acknowledge. Ernest is a pro in every sense of the word. We’re just kind of dealing with it a day at a time.”
Potentially motivating the Rams’ openness to move Jones is the emergence of rookie Omar Speights, who Snead said will make their game day roster — in tandem with the reality that Jones will not receive an extension in Los Angeles.

znModeratorboston scott? whoa. that’s a bit of a surprise no?
Agree. I thought he looked better than Evans this summer. With any luck no one will pick him up and he will be out there if the Rams ever need to add a back. Well, that would be Rams luck, not necessarily luck for Scott, but you know what I mean.
