    from https://theramswire.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/rams/2025/03/09/nfl-free-agency-rams-davante-adams-grade-signing/82181078007/

In Sean McVay’s eight years as the head coach, the Rams have only had one other year where they averaged fewer yards per game than they averaged (331) in 2024. That was the 2022 season where things went off the rails and everyone was hurt in the second half of the year.

It became clear that the offense needed help around Matthew Stafford, Kyren Williams and Nacua, and the front office wasted no time making a splash. The team agreed to a two-year, $46 million deal with Davante Adams on Sunday, bringing in one of the top wide receivers on the market.

With Cooper Kupp on his way out of Los Angeles via trade or release, the Rams could use another wide receiver to pair with Nacua. Adams is a terrific fit in L.A., specifically with the offense McVay runs. Even at the age of 32, Adams is still a threat no matter where he lines up on the field.

His route running is among the best of any wide receiver in the league, with eye-popping releases at the line of scrimmage that allow him to create easy separation. According to ESPN, Adams was 14th in separation score last season, showing just how often he got open for his quarterbacks.

Davante Adams was 14th in ESPN’s separation score last season despite his age.

Still an elite separator and will bring the juice the Rams have missed since OBJ in their Super Bowl run.

Older comment (from 2020) from James Jones, former Packers receiver: https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/30252122/why-davante-adams-turned-better-all-green-bay-packers-special-receivers

Jones: “When you look at the receivers in the league, you can say that this is their strong point and this is their weak point. With Davante, you can’t say any of that. I watch [Cardinals receiver DeAndre] Hopkins, and he’s not very good releasing at the line of scrimmage, for example. But when you talk about Davante, you’re talking about release, he’s phenomenal. [Yards after catch] yardage, he’s phenomenal. Route running, he’s phenomenal. The ability to go up and make the tough catch, he’s phenomenal. Speed, yeah he’s not 4.3 [seconds], but he’s always getting behind and catching the deep balls or not getting caught from behind. He’s just special in every category.”

    RAMS REPORT@RamsNFLReport
Below are both Cooper Kupp & Davante Adams’ stats.

Adams has been much more productive and reliable throughout his career, notably the past 3 seasons (22-24).

    Kupp: 33 gp, 201 rec, 2,259 yds, 17 tds
    Adams: 48 gp, 288 rec, 3,723 yds, 30 tds

I love Kupp, but this is an upgrade.

    Wyatt Miller@wymill07
Davante Adams has always been an elite route runner and man coverage beater.

Adams was one of 16 qualified WRs with over 2.5 yards per route run against man coverage last season, despite being in 2 separate offenses.

    Matt Bowen@MattBowen41
Davante Adams to the Rams…Adams can beat press/separate on the isolation throws in the LA offense. And McVay will scheme for Adams on PA/movement. Free access off the ball + zone voids to attack.

    Vincent Bonsignore@VinnyBonsignore
Scary addition for the rest of the NFC

Sean McVay led a pretty aggressive charge at Davante Adams over the last couple of days, I am told.

As my colleague @diannarussini.bsky.social reported, it’s a deal worth $46 million with $26 million guaranteed

    PFF LA Rams@PFF_Rams
Davante Adams has had a Yards Per Route Run mark of at least 1.97 in each of the past seven seasons:

    2024 – 2.04
    2023 – 1.97
    2022 – 2.45
    2021 – 2.82
    2020 – 2.96
    2019 – 2.33
    2018 – 2.12

    Doug Farrar@NFL_DougFarrar
Davante Adams was not given the benefit of being the target in motion on any of his 16 explosive receptions last season.

Guess who led the league with 50 targets in motion? Puka Nacua.

Guess who ranked fourth in the league with 41? Cooper Kupp

    Pete Prisco@PriscoCBS
Not exactly adding speed to an offense that needs it. Weird move.

Rams, WR Davante Adams agree to terms on 2-year deal

    https://www.therams.com/news/rams-wr-davante-adams-agree-to-terms-on-2-year-deal

WOODLAND HILLS, Calif. – The Rams have agreed to terms with wide receiver Davante Adams on a two-year deal.

Adams, 32, is coming off his fifth-consecutive 1,000 yard season, accomplishing the feat across three games with the Raiders (18 receptions for 209 yards) and 11 with the Jets (67 for 854) after being traded from Las Vegas to New York during the 2024 season. He also caught eight touchdowns in addition to those 85 receptions for 1,063 yards.

A three-time First-Team All-Pro and six-time Pro Bowl selection, Adams has amassed 957 receptions for 11,844 yards and 103 touchdowns in 11 NFL seasons, with 157 starts in 164 career games played in the regular season.

He originally entered the league as a second-round pick (No. 53 overall) by the Green Bay Packers in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Kupp ran 4.6 at the combine because he didn’t really know how to do track prep, but during his 2018 ACL rehab his PTs fixed his gate and started running 20-21mph after. He always had natural juice, that just unlocked it.

So do the Rams have cap room this year? Seems like they havent had much cap space since the Super Bowl year.

It’s kind of unclear until we see what the Jackson, Atwell, and Stafford contracts–along with the J.Jackson trade–all do to the numbers.

On paper, right now, before those contracts are factored in, they have around 54 M in cap space.

This is before they factor in the moves I list in the quotation.

    NFL Stats@NFL_Stats
Cap space available for each team, per Spotrac:

    NE – $125.8M
    WAS – $93.8M
    LAC – $93.8M
    ARI – $77.8M
    PIT – $63.9M

    TEN – $63.2M
    SEA – $62.6M
    JAX – $60.2M
    LAR – $55.1M

Got this from Pro Football Journal, The NFL’s Top Post-WWII Guards: https://nflfootballjournal.blogspot.com/2019/05/the-nfls-top-post-wwii-guards.html

It’s a ranking. I pull all their Rams guards from their top 50 list

    18. Tom Mack
Thirteen Pro Bowls. Mack was a dominant player versus the run and the pass early in his career. In his last few years, he got by on savvy and experience as his strength and speed seemed to decline. His first eight or so seasons were like Zach Martin is now, but his last several were just not as dominant. Bob Lilly named Jim Parker the toughest lineman he faced but Mack was second on his list. Larry Little said, “Mack could do it all”.

Mack was voted to 11 Pro Bowls in 13 seasons and was a First-team All-Pro five times and a Second-team All-Pro three times. When you add in his All-Conference selections to all that, Mack got post-season honors in 12 of his 13 seasons. PFJ named him to the 1965-1975 All-Mid-Decade Team as well. He played in 184 games, never missing one.

    34. Duane Putnam
Like Stan Jones, he was one of the first weightlifters. But he was also able to run very well and was the best pulling guard of the 1950s in our view.

Putnam played eleven seasons, mostly with the Rams. He went to five Pro Bowls, was First-team All-Pro five times (three consensus) and was also a Second-team All-Pro one additional season. He was also a 1955-65 All-Mid Decade selection by PFJ.

    38. Tom Newberry
Strong, quicker, great trap blocker would flatten people. Started off his career like a possible Hall of Famer but after a few years seemed to lose some size and strength and was no longer dominant, just adequate. “Newberry is fast and strong and loves to pancake defenders”, wrote Buchsbaum when Newberry was at his peak. He also said a couple of years later, “He’s the NFL’s fastest guard, even after knee troubles, but he’s not playing as well as he can.”

He was “compact, quick and exploded off the ball, getting movement and collapsing on people. With good body control, he’s good at locating defenders on the move. He had long arms that helped compensate lack of height, sometimes a little over-aggressive and could be beaten on stunts.” said one NFL scout, also in the late-1980s.

    43. Dennis Harrah
A taller guard with great upper-body strength. In his early years could pull with the best of them. Later became a more efficient pass blocker but did get called for holding a lot. “A very, very strong one-on-one blocker. A good pass blocker who has good pulling speed bus is not overly nimble”, said Buchsbaum.

    44. Kent Hill
Hill was 6-5, 260, and would run a 4.8 and had the build of Adonis. Super-long arms helped him in pass protection and was perhaps the best pulling guard/long trapper of his era. The 47 Gap play, Eric Dickerson’s favorite, relied on guards who could move and Harrah and Hill you’d do that making the 48 Gap as successful as the 47 Gap.

Sources: The #Seahawks, after trading Geno Smith to the #Raiders, have shifted their primary focus to Sam Darnold. He is their No. 1 option, and there is mutual interest on his behalf as well.

It is highly unlikely that Darnold returns to the #Vikings, according to multiple sources.

The #Seahawks got a prime look at Sam Darnold in Week 16, when he threw 3 TDs (0 INTs), while leading a game-winning #Vikings’ drive that culminated in a 39-yard TD pass to Justin Jefferson.

Seattle has contingency plans at QB, but Darnold is their top choice.

    Ed Werder@WerderEdNFL
I still recall a conversation with Pete Carroll in 2023 when he shared his opinion that Geno Smith throws it as well as anyone in football.

Now reunited as Raiders following last night’s trade.

Me (at moi.com): Picking up on what Werder says in that tweet, what I don’t see mentioned enough in this whole discussion nationally about Smith and Seattle and LV is that Smith signed with Seattle under Pete Carroll, and Carroll had him for 4 years. Carroll went 12-4 in 2020 with Smith.

Back story: Seahawks were working to extend Geno Smith’s contract over the past week. When progress was not being made, the Raiders stepped in and showed interest in acquiring Smith. With Seattle struggling to get a new deal done with Smith, they opted for the third-round pick instead.

    Lindsey Thiry@LindseyThiry
Along with the likely scenario the Seahawks will sign Sam Darnold at QB, there’s some optimism this could alter the conversation with receiver DK Metcalf, who has requested a trade.

Supersolid: Scientists turn light into a solid that flows like liquid for first time
This achievement marks a significant milestone in the field of condensed matter physics.

    https://interestingengineering.com/science/scientists-create-supersolid-from-light

In a remarkable development, researchers have successfully turned light into a supersolid for the first time, paving the way for new insights into the unusual quantum states of matter.

This achievement marks a significant milestone in the field of condensed matter physics.

Dimitrios Trypogeorgos from Italy’s National Research Council (CNR) reportedly said, “We actually made light into a solid. That’s pretty awesome.”

This feat builds on earlier work by fellow CNR scientist Danielle Sanvitto, who demonstrated over a decade ago that light could behave like a fluid.

However, Trypogeorgos, Sanvitto, and their team have taken it further by creating what they call a quantum “supersolid.”

    Light goes quantum

Supersolids are unique materials with zero viscosity and a structure resembling conventional crystals, like those found in table salt.

Unlike typical materials, which behave according to familiar laws of physics, supersolids exist mainly in the quantum realm, NewScientist reported.

Until now, such materials were only achievable in controlled experiments involving atoms cooled to extremely low temperatures—conditions under which quantum effects become prominent and observable.

The recent experiment diverged from previous methods by utilizing a semiconductor known as aluminum gallium arsenide instead of ultracold atoms.

The researchers directed a laser at a specifically patterned piece of the semiconductor, which featured narrow ridges.

This interaction between the light and the semiconductor led to the formation of hybrid particles called polaritons.

The ridge pattern played a critical role by constraining how these quasiparticles could move and their energy levels, ultimately enabling the polaritons to coalesce into a supersolid state.

The team faced a significant challenge to solidify their findings: they needed to accurately measure enough properties of this newly formed supersolid, offering proof that it truly exhibited characteristics of both a solid and a fluid with no viscosity.

Sanvitto highlighted the complexity of the task, stating that a supersolid made from light had never been created or experimentally validated before.

    Supersolid out of laser beams

Alberto Bramati from Sorbonne University in France also emphasized the importance of the study, noting that it contributes to a broader understanding of how quantum matter can change states through phase transition.

While the team has convincingly shown that they produced a supersolid, Bramati acknowledged that additional measurements and analyses are necessary to comprehend its properties fully.

Trypogeorgos expressed optimism about future research opportunities involving light-based supersolids.

He suggested that these forms of matter might be more manageable than those generated from atoms.

This characteristic could lead to a deeper exploration of novel and unexpected states of matter and practical applications in quantum technology.

As the field of quantum physics continues to evolve, creating a light-based supersolid represents an exciting beginning for researchers.

With much more to uncover about the behavior of this new state of matter, scientists are keen to delve deeper into its nuances, potentially uncovering groundbreaking applications in the coming years.

Tutu Atwell, Rams agree to 1-year, $10 million deal: Source

By Jourdan Rodrigue and RJ Kraft

    https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6180689/2025/03/06/rams-tutu-atwell-extension-nfl-free-agency/

INGLEWOOD, CALIFORNIA – OCTOBER 06: Tutu Atwell #5 of the Los Angeles Rams returns a punt during the first half of a game against the Green Bay Packers at SoFi Stadium on October 06, 2024 in Inglewood, California.
Tutu Atwell is returning to the Los Angeles Rams on a one-year deal worth $10 million, according to a league source.

Atwell was the No. 77 ranked free agent on The Athletic’s top 150 list and the 13th-highest wide receiver on the board.

The 25-year-old is coming off his best season; he established career highs in receptions (42) and receiving yards (562) in his fourth year with the Los Angeles Rams. He ranked third on the team in each of those categories — behind Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua — for the league’s 10th-best passing offense.

Retaining Atwell helps bolster a Rams receiving group that returns Nacua and second-year player Jordan Whittington. The team has informed Kupp that they want to trade him and they are working with his agent to find a fit for the veteran receiver.

Drafted in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft out of Louisville, it took time for the 5-foot-9, 165-pound Atwell to earn some run in a Rams offensive system where run blocking is a key trait and targets were dominated at different points in his L.A. tenure by Kupp, Nacua and Robert Woods.

Atwell’s speed is his best attribute and he has an average of 13.6 yards per reception. Over four seasons with the Rams, he has 99 receptions, 1,343 receiving yards, four receiving touchdowns and one rushing TD. Atwell has never played over 64 percent of the team’s offensive snaps in a season, according to Pro Football Reference.

The Rams have been active ahead of free agency. In the last week, the team has agreed to a restructured deal with quarterback Matthew Stafford, reached a deal to re-sign left tackle Alaric Jackson and have a trade in place to send offensive lineman Jonah Jackson to the Chicago Bears at the start of the league year on March 12.

Bigger role on tap for Atwell

The Rams have broadcast their intent to rebuild their receiver room around their young star Nacua. General manager Les Snead also expressed his doubt Wednesday that veteran receiver Demarcus Robinson, who had played in the downfield/”X” position for the Rams for the last two seasons, will return to the team this season.

Atwell, whose longer-term future with the Rams was in doubt because of his limited snaps, will step into that role and also be a factor in their motion and sweeps packages. Atwell has the speed, the knowledge of the offense and the hands to play this complementary role. It was hard to get him more snaps behind the other players and Sean McVay’s preference not to substitute players while in 11 personnel. The X receiver is not the No. 1 receiver in McVay’s offense; in fact, he can be as low as the third- or fourth-most targeted player. This offense will run through Nacua, who plays a multi-faceted position in the offense.

the Rams have to stock their receiver cupboard, keeping Atwell around helps

Yeah. Basically, they are losing Kupp, and as Snead sort of indicated in his last PR appearance, they are cautious about Robinson, who may miss time with a DUI. That leaves Nacua and…Whittington, who has no speed though he’s got a lot of other things, and Atwell, who doesn’t have a lot of other things but does have speed. Plus, Nacua misses games.

They will be adding a receiver or 2 this year, probably in the draft.

Jackson did not allow a sack since Week 11 (including playoffs) and did not allow a quarterback hit since Week 13 (including playoffs).
