znModeratorFive Observations From Rams Training Camp Day Eight
Brock Vierra
https://www.si.com/nfl/rams/los-angeles-jimmy-garoppolo-quentin-lake
The Los Angeles Rams pushed their abilities to the limit on Thursday, using practice as a stress test to see where they’re at physically, mentally, and their ability to operate within the structure of the scheme.
1. Jimmy Garoppolo found out exactly where the limit was in his play
Garoppolo has been excellent in camp after Sean McVay and Mike LaFleur re-fitted the offense to play towards his strong suits. Run-based attack, play action passes, quick strike passes, targeting certain holes in zone coverage, taking advantage of certain man matchups, and more.
The Rams on Thursday pushed the limit on Garoppolo. The response was not as effective. When Garoppolo attacked the deep third, there were issues. But that’s not a cause for concern because Garoppolo locked in during the red zone period and put in his best performance in camp. His mistakes and the recognition of them gives me confidence that if he’s called into action, he’ll come through.
2. Quentin Lake is the key to success for the defense
Lake is the chess piece Chris Shula has to win games. Lake is the player Shula could use to press, blitz, drop into coverage, line up against various pass catchers, and once the ball is snapped, it is his job to maintain gap integrity while being able to coordinate players alongside Nate Landman to ensure success.
Landman is the signal caller, but it’s Lake who understands the defense, who helps relay messages, and who helps get the defense aligned. He is the key. Lake is also one of the vocal leaders in the defensive back room.
3. Xavier Smith may be the team’s most versatile player and thus, potentially their most influential
This would be crazy to say about a player who isn’t even guaranteed a roster spot but from what I have seen, he has been the team’s most consistent returner, his speed as a gunner allows Ethan Evans to punt the ball deep while punting within his coverage, and the Rams have used him on offense in several creative ways.
Smith may not see much playing time, but like he did with his first ever touch of the football, all he needs is a second and a yard of space to change the trajectory of the Rams’ fortunes.
4. Tyler Higbee is in fact back
Higbee had his best practice on Thursday, dominating in one on one and red zone situations, recording multiple scores. While this might be his last season with the Rams, if he can stay healthy, it might be his best yet. His height and skills opened up interior passing lanes for the team.
5. The Defensive Back Room is full of men willing to dare
Every single defensive back has put their body on the line throughout training camp in coverage and as blitzers with no let-up. They’re flying, diving, and jumping for balls, often making plays on bigger players. Wait until they face an offense not filled with beloved teammates.

Today was a walk through apparently but we can see AJ is participating in those:
More on that.
…
The Los Angeles Rams look to be inching closer to getting a key piece of their offensive line back, as left tackle Alaric Jackson continues to take steps towards getting back on the field. Jackson has been sidelined most of this offseason with issues stemming from blood clots, a similar situation to the one that forced him to miss significant time back in 2022.
According to ESPN’s Sarah Barshop, Jackson was able to take part in team activities for the first time since camp started, being limited to only individual drills through the first few days. (link: https://www.cbssports.com/fantasy/football/news/rams-alaric-jackson-participates-in-team-drills/ ).
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the belief is that Jackson will play in 2025 but there are “still questions” as he works through this health scare for the second time in his career. Jackson starting to get on the field more is, at the minimum, an encouraging sign.
Jackson signed a three-year, $57 million extension in February after a solid first season as the full time starting left tackle. Head coach Sean McVay touched on how crucial the position will be for the team going forward.
“Left tackle is going to be a really important spot for us to be able to develop, with an optimistic and a hopeful approach that Alaric is going to continue to work and be ready whenever he gets cleared.”
Putting even more pressure on the left tackle questions is the lack of mobility of veteran QB Matthew Stafford, who has also not been participating in practice with back soreness. Considering that Jackson is responsible for watching Stafford’s backside makes it all the more pressing that LA is secure at the position.
Luckily, Sports Illustrated is reporting that the offensive depth for Los Angeles thus far has been playing well in practice, specifically noting that tackles D.J. Humphries and Warren McClendon Jr have found their rhythm. (link: https://www.si.com/nfl/rams/los-angeles-tutu-atwell-davante-adams-sean-mcvay-training-camp ).

Rams S Kam Curl will be week to week after having his ankle stepped on Tuesday. Sean McVay said he was relieved it wasnt a worse outcome
znModeratorThe Los Angeles Rams made some minute adjustments to their team this offseason to try and shore up the areas of concern after an up-and-down 2024 campaign.
One of those moves was to add veteran defensive lineman Poona Ford to the young defensive line — a unit that needed help stopping the run this past season. Ford, who’s known as a quality run stopper, should make a sizable impact on this group. Which is why The Athletic’s Dave Helman and Derrik Klassen both agreed Ford is a “DNA changer” for the Rams defense in 2025.
“Poona Ford, specifically as a Los Angeles Ram, is exactly what we’re talking about when we say we want to change the DNA of a unit,” Helman said on The Athletic Football Show podcast. “This is a great first step toward making the Rams’ run defense respectable.”
The idea here is that not only will Ford upgrade the Rams’ 22nd-ranked run defense in yards per game and 24th in yards per attempt, but that he’ll also raise the tide of all the young L.A. defensive linemen like Kobie Turner, Braden Fiske and rookie Ty Hamilton. A better run-stopping team will alleviate pressure on the pass rushers, too.
znModeratora collection of passages about Landman from other articles covering this year’s training camp:
1.
Nate Landman is the best free agent signing for the Rams
…Landman has fixed the issues within the linebacker room overnight. He’s the current defensive signal caller, he has great instincts, plays the run like a champ, and is brilliant in coverage. He is everything the Rams needed last season, and his ability to command has allowed Omar Speights to go and hunt.
2.
Landman has been the Rams’ best linebacker so far, excelling in coverage and run defense, with the ability to communicate and coordinate attacks across the line.
3.
Nate Landman displays command of the field and huddle. Landman set the defensive sideline into uproars when he punched the ball out of tight end Davis Allen’s hands during red zone drills, and the fumble was recovered by cornerback Darious Williams. He was a leader in the huddle once again and McVay was complimentary about his leadership skills.
4.
Landman in command. Linebackers coach Greg Williams told theRams.com during OTAs that Landman was transitioning “seamlessly” into Los Angeles’ defense, and also that “he’s come in and guys respect him just from where he’s been and what he’s done.” That was evident throughout Thursday’s practice. Whenever the defense huddled, he consistently had the eyes and attention of every teammate pre-snap, which says a lot about the respect he has already commanded in such a short amount of time.
5.
The Rams have a special, cerebral player in Nate Landman. Landman continually snuffed out the run and play action, making critical decisions that prohibited the ball from being thrown downfield. Landman appears to be the difference maker that will take this defense from explosive to dominating.
https://www.si.com/nfl/rams/stetson-bennett-sean-mcvay-davante-adams-nate-landman
6.
He’s only been in the league three years, but Landman worked his way from undrafted free agent to reliable starter in just his second professional season. He’s been more than willing to share his knowledge with a group full of similarly under-looked players in Los Angeles. His success against the run will be a welcome addition to the Rams’ defense.
In 2023, Nate Landman played 16 games for Atlanta and had the 2nd-highest run stop percentage in the NFL among qualified linebackers.

znModerator5 Bold Observations From Rams Training Camp
The Los Angeles Rams have had some shocking performances through training campBrock Vierra
LOS ANGELES, CA. The Los Angeles Rams have completed seven training camp practices, and after being on site at Loyola Marymount University to witness all of them, there are five undisputable facts regarding the team. Here are five observations of the team, based on those facts.
1. Davante Adams is the clear WR1 and it’s not even close
It’s not close. Adams has been the most targeted pass catcher by far compared to his counterparts, and on those opportunities, he’s hauled in the ball more times than not. Adams, barring injury, will be a 1,000-yard receiver once again this season, and if he continues to play in the way he currently is, he’s on track for a career season.
2. Konata Mumpfield will establish himself as a top receiver in the NFL by the time his rookie deal expires
Mumpfield or at this point, Davante Adams Jr has been the Rams’ third-best pass catcher in camp, only trailing Adams and Puka Nacua. Mumpfield is on pace to follow in Adams’ lofty footsteps with excellent play, silky smooth feet, tremendous balance, and elite hands.
“It’s not as much of they’re going to open their mouth and say something I haven’t heard but different techniques,” stated Davante Adams. “The wheel’s always being reinvented and you can only do so much with certain routes, but I’ve seen stuff from even [Wide Receiver] Konata [Mumpfield] since he’s been out here and that’s opened my eyes, not necessarily like, ‘Oh my God, I’ve never seen that’, but its him changing up his pace and working through some things, seeing some of the errors and the trial and error I guess I could say.’
“Even over the course of three practice days, how he can transform and go and kill some of our better corners on some amazing routes. It’s fun for me just watching the growth of him, talking through it, seeing somebody fail, doing something a certain way and then going out there and knocking it out of the park. I feel like a proud dad watching him out there.”
That proud dad thing. He’s not lying. Adams, on his off day, is on the sidelines watching Mumpfield work, paying close attention to everything he does. Yeah, Konata Mumpfield is legit.
3. Quentin Lake will get whatever money he wants this offseason
Playmaker, fundamentally sound, leader, captain, intelligent, adaptive, selfless, the terms to describe Lake are endless. Considering he’s a captain, former signal caller, and a straight-up monster on defense, one would think the Rams would have paid him and since they haven’t, Lake would be well within his rights to hold out, so why hasn’t he made a peep?
Because he knows he will get paid top dollar next season. Why? Because the Rams want to keep him, and 31 other teams need a player like him.
4. Nate Landman is the best free agent signing for the Rams
Even more than Adams, Landman has fixed the issues within the linebacker room overnight. He’s the current defensive signal caller, he has great instincts, plays the run like a champ, and is brilliant in coverage. He is everything the Rams needed last season, and his ability to command has allowed Omar Speights to go and hunt.
5. The Rams have three head coaching-caliber coaches on Sean McVay’s staff, if not more
Mike LaFleur, Chris Shula, and Aubrey Pleasant. When you talk about leaders, leaders who are also teachers, all three men fit the mold. They have inspired their players, they speak with such reverence and grace towards the game, but in the critical moments, when players look like they’re about to regress, fall off, not come through, those three men have helped sustain a culture within the Rams that has persevered in the post-Super Bowl LVI era.

Matthew Stafford2024 stats: 16 games | 65.8 pct | 3,762 pass yds | 7.3 ypa | 20 pass TD | 8 INT | 41 rush yds | 6 fumbles
Stafford has been playing in the NFL since some of his teammates were in elementary school, and yet the 37-year-old quarterback has shown he still has the chops to compete with the best. Though his stats took a bit of downturn from his Pro Bowl season in 2023, Stafford led the Rams back to the playoffs last season, defeating the Vikings before falling just short of taking down the eventual Super Bowl-champion Eagles in snowy conditions. Stafford’s future in Los Angeles appeared murky in the early stages of this offseason as the QB put out feelers to see if moving on was the right move. But he eventually decided to stick with the Rams, taking a hometown discount to stay in Los Angeles for at least 2025, his 17th NFL season. And as head coach Sean McVay has said, if the Rams had it their way Stafford would keep on playing in L.A. for a least a few more years.
NFL Pro Insight for Stafford: Matthew Stafford executed 67 designed rollouts this past season, the second-most in the NFL, completing 48 of 66 passes (72.7%) for 437 yards (second-most) and an NFL-leading nine touchdowns without a single interception.

Jared Verse
2024 stats: 17 games | 66 tackles | 11 tfl | 4.5 sacks | 2 FF | 2 FRThe Rams struck gold in the draft once again with Verse, adding to their rapidly growing young defensive core with an edge who terrorizes opposing quarterbacks at an obscene rate. Verse took home Defensive Rookie of the Year honors, the second year in a row an L.A. rookie was a finalist, but the first winner for the Rams since Aaron Donald in 2014. Finishing fourth in the league in total pressures and adding 12 more in the postseason, per Pro Football Focus, Verse’s performance as a rookie put him among some of the best at the position last year, even if the sacks didn’t follow. Verse even received a rousing endorsement of his uncanny talent from the recently retired Terron Armstead, a top offensive lineman over the last decade. After just one game lining up opposite Verse, Armstead decreed he never wanted to do so again and predicted a Defensive Player of the Year nod in the pass rusher’s future. Not a bad start to an NFL career.
NFL Pro Insight for Verse: Jared Verse generated 76 pressures this season, the second-most by a rookie since 2018 (Nick Bosa, 81, 2019).

znModeratorIt only took one practice for Rams veteran to lay claim to a new role on defense
The mad scientist, DC Chris Shula, is experimenting in his lab again. When it comes to the Rams’ secondary, there are many questions about the quality and depth of the Los Angeles Rams roster at the cornerback and safety positions. After getting plenty of playing time in a versatile role in 2024, the team seems to be focusing on placing veteran safety Quentin Lake in a more traditional safety role this season. That creates an opening for an additional defensive back in nickel and dime packages.
And that creates new opportunities for second-year defensive back Jaylen McCollough to make plays.
The Rams’ safety position was bursting with talent at this time last year. Not only did the team welcome back Quentin Lake and Russ Yeast, but the team signed veteran John Johnson III and Kamren Curl, drafted rookie Kamren Kinchens, and signed UDFA Jaylen McCollough after the draft.
Defying incredible odds, Jaylen McCollough somehow managed to sneak into the secondary’s rotation for 335 defensive snaps. From that, he was able to record 43 tackles, four pass deflections, one quarterback hit, four interceptions, and even had one pick-six. He tied the team’s interception total with rookie Kam Kinchens to lead the team in that category.
He even held opposing receivers to a catch rate of just 64.0 percent. That’s not bad considering he was an undrafted rookie safety.
On to bigger and better roles in 2025
One of the most challenging aspects of the Rams secondary last season was distributing snaps to so many worthy defensive backs. Using tools provided by Lineups.com, it is a relatively simple task to generate a data table showing the snap counts of the Rams’ defensive players. Now armed with that information, it’s easy to distinguish the difficulty of getting four safeties onto the football field. And that does not include players who are no longer with the team.
But Jaylen McCollough is here, and hungry. He needs more snaps if he is to help the secondary improve over last season. As a result, mad scientist DC Chris Shula is trying a new experiment, this time with his ball-hawking defensive back. And the first indications of a new role for McCollough are that he is already getting trialed at various positions at training camp:
Interesting wrinkle of first week of Rams camp has been safety Jaylen McCollough lining up at dime linebacker.
"He's so valuable, he's so versatile," Sean McVay said. "He's just continued to get better and show his value to this football team."
— Adam Grosbard (@AdamGrosbard) July 29, 2025
Of course, how the team deploys McCollough depends on who starts at linebacker. If the Rams pair up Nate Landman with Omar Speights, then subbing in McCollough on passing downs makes a lot of sense. But if the team settles on either Pooh Paul Jr. or Shaun Dolac as the partner for Landman, that could change the defensive strategy.
I love reports of the Rams trying new angles to get McCollough on the football field. Not only is he a solid tackler who excels in pass coverage, but he is a true ball-hawking defensive back who can change the momentum of a game with one play.
Jaylen McCollough is just one of multiple veterans in line for larger roles with the team this season. But with the team already experimenting to get him more playing time, he is in a position to make a positive impact this year.

znModeratorQuentin Lake was the leader of the defense last season, wearing the green dot as a do-it-all safety. Landman has taken over that responsibility this summer, which Lake says “takes a load off” him – in a good way.
… seeing [Landman] up close has been a treat. His communication and leadership have really helped the defense, as has his knack for creating turnovers.
“Fantastic player. I almost want to call him ‘Peanut Punch Landman’. He has just a knack for the ball and we see so many clips, Coach McVay shows them in the team meeting room of him doing it in Atlanta and then you see it out here and you understand why he’s able to cause those turnovers,” Lake said Tuesday. “He practices the right way, a great communicator, fantastic teammate. Great addition for us and I can’t wait to see what he’s going to do during the season as well.”
…“He’s done an amazing job,” Lake continued. “I know there was familiarity with him being in Atlanta, kind of with the same defensive scheme, but his transition really has been flawless. You guys have seen it, he’s been making a ton of plays.”
One of the things that makes Landman a productive player is his ability to stop the run. In 2023, he had the second-highest run-stop rate of any linebacker in the NFL, according to Pro Football Focus.

For me the true judge of a QB is NOT how great of a throw they can make to their 1st read, but how great are they when the D takes away their 1st read!!!Processing speed… ability to make great throws after resetting from 1st read… decision making as the clock in head starts to shrink… ability to handle bodies around them… ability to consistently get ball to reads/places most other QBs can’t & doing it on time!
znModeratorAs to the severity of Stafford’s back pain, ESPN NFL Insider/analyst Peter Schrager weighs in. He could go for clicks and views by proclaiming the sky is falling over SoFi Stadium. But he takes a different approach.
He suggests that the Rams are just being overly cautious

I think the Rams are just being ultra cautious"@PSchrags #PMSLive pic.twitter.com/2hWGffvhMG
— Pat McAfee (@PatMcAfeeShow) July 28, 2025
Okay, so why do the Rams feel it necessary to be overly protective of the starting quarterback? Well, his injury history over the past four seasons would give the first sign of caution. Stafford has had to fight through significant (but not season-ending) injuries in each of the last four seasons:
A bruised spinal column in 2022
An injured thumb on his throwing hand in 2023
Rib injuries in 2024
Back pain in 2025With a track record like that, the Rams have many reasons to play it safe with Stafford.
Could Stafford suit up if need be? Probably, yes. After all, this is the same quarterback who returned to the game after dislocating his shoulder to complete a game-winning touchdown pass. But the Rams need a full season, not one play, out of him this season. It’s not ‘nothing,’ but it’s not something that shakes the team’s confidence in seeing Stafford under center when the season starts.

znModeratorFive Takeaways From Rams 2025 Training Camp Day Five
The Los Angeles Rams had a great first day in padsBrock Vierra
The Los Angeles Rams put the pads on for the first time this season and got to work with a physical practice that emphasized stress testing the trenches. With that being said, here are five takeaways from Monday’s practice.
1. Poona Ford is a monster.
Ford was the best defender on Monday with Jared Verse closely following in second. Ford plugged gaps, constantly defeated double teams, and was just a lot to handle.
2. Jimmy Garoppolo got an offense tailored to him and he shined.
Garoppolo put on his finest performance of training camp so far, playing exceptionally well, making smart decisions, and throwing precise passes that consistently hit their targets with velocity. For the first time we saw the Rams run an offense fitted for Garoppolo’s strengths.
A pass game built off the run, Garoppolo looked just like how he did his first season in San Francisco after getting traded from New England. This was with Davante Adams sitting out practice, as it was a rest day for him. Garoppolo was balling.
3. Jaylen McCollough is on the verge of a big year
McCollough, who was receiving personal instruction from Super Bowl champion Eric Weddle, continued to be a force in coverage. He looks confident, instinctive, and should be a presence at all levels of the field.
“It’s really same thing that you saw him do a great job with last year,” stated Sean McVay after practice. “He’s so valuable. He’s so versatile. He can play safety or the dime linebacker. When we played Seattle last year, the first game, he was playing linebacker on early and normal down and distances and taking on guards when they’re easily climbing to him uncovered. What’s cool is when I think about you guys ask me about different players, these are people you don’t bet against. They just show their value. They are grown men and they’re mature beyond their years. That’s exactly how [Safety] ‘Tank’ [Jaylen] McCullough came in last year. I think there are certain guys that just have a knack for being in the right place at the right time. He was doing that at Tennessee. It’s not by mistake that he had the ball production that he did last year. He’s made of the right stuff. I love what he’s about. He’s just continuing to get better and to really show his value to this football team.”
4. The running back room looks dangerous
Kyren Williams, Blake Corum, and Jarquez Hunter saw opportunities and took advantage of them. Williams was excellent in the red zone, being the Rams’ biggest threat to score. Corum once again flashed his speed and agility, bouncing runs to the outside where he found space, and Hunter tried once again to run through the defense, striking at the heart of the front seven in multiple occasions.
5. The Rams have the best defensive line in football
The Rams’ defensive line has the feeling of unison where they’re currently coordinating their attacks on each and every play, making adjustments in the field in order to play well off each other. They are operating at a level that produces championships. This defensive line is going to strike fear into offenses.
