After I heard the bad news:

August 25, 2014 at 1:10 pm in reply to: for those who are arguing Rams shoulda drafted a qb high #5045PA RamParticipantMostly, I remember people talking about the 4th or 5th round–a developmental guy. They waited til the 6th and took Gilbert so that’s not much difference, I guess.
In hindsight I would have preferred they take a QB in the second round.
I am the “hindsight” analyst. It’s just what I do. but even then–would any of these guys be better than Hill right now? Of course not–it’s more a a future thing.
But this is not going to dampen my enthusiasm for this year. Fisher even said, everyone knows they will be a run first offense. They have a strong defense(yeah–I worry about the secondary)and guys like Robinson will only get better. Hill can make the throws they need to win games. That’s all I care about.
They are in the spot they are–period. No one can rewind this. We have no idea what will happen until it plays out.
Will they be in the 8-8 range again–picking middle of the 1st round?
Will they be awful and get the #1 pick?
Will they make the playoffs?
It’s just a matter of seeing how it plays out. I don’t think they should have to significantly alter their plans under Hill.
But what happens if Hill goes down?
I just suspect they aren’t completely happy with the situation and WILL bring in another guy and go with 3 QBs this year. Someone will shake loose and I expect they will pounce on him. I don’t expect a trade unless it’s for very minimal.
Let the games begin.

PA RamParticipantLong looked terrible.
He is also another injury waiting to happen.
The possibility that Long and Bradford came back too soon will long be a question pondered in Ram circles.
Did Long feel threatened by the Rams essentially drafting his replacement? Was there some spoken or unspoken pressure put on these players?
Clearly he wasn’t ready. And I wonder about Sam too. The same knee? How strong was it? I really wanted the Rams to get a QB this year but even I didn’t have the urgency that was obviously, in hindsight, needed. I would have been happy with a 4th round selection. They should have gotten one earlier. I’d feel a lot better if Jimmy Garoppolo was on this team right now. in any case–there is no longer any doubt. They have to move on. Sam will always be that hot potato. He can get injured at any moment. A team can’t move forward with that hanging over their head.
I do wish that they would have drafted a young guy a couple of years earlier. By now he could be ready to go. But, you know–hindsight.

PA RamParticipantThey are not gonna cut him.
Not happnin. And i am pretty sure
he’ll be ready to compete again
next year. Who knows,
maybe he plays all sixteen games
next year and leads them to a ring.
Comeback player of the year.
Who knows. They’ll draft a QB though,
thats for sure. Maybe more
than one. Probably look
at some Vets too.Can you imagine how Bradford
must feel right now?w
vI agree. I just can’t see it.
I was just thinking of Sam. His whole career is one big question mark now. You heart has to go out to him.

August 24, 2014 at 7:12 pm in reply to: who should start? will they trade for someone? who? qb discussion #4881PA RamParticipantIf Fisher traded for a Cousins now he’d basically be telling Sam, “you’re done”–right after this difficult injury and long recovery ahead of him. I can’t see that happening. I’m sure Sam has many good friends on this team and I don’t know they would particularly like it. I know Fisher said that Shaun Hill is the guy and I believe it. Now–I CAN see the potential of them trading for another back-up type–a non-threatening guy. But if Davis continues to perform I believe they’ll just go with him as #3.

PA RamParticipantyeah. i can’t think of another starting qb with the injury history this guy has had who’s made it.
alex smith?
he had a shoulder injury which they chose not to do surgery on. they finally decided to have surgery on it when they realized it wouldn’t heal on its own.
then he had to have a second shoulder surgery. mind you this was not necessarily contact related rather it was related to a wire they had left from the first surgery.
besides that he blew out his knee.
bradford has had three major ligament injuries. he had an ankle injury which still hadn’t healed going into the next season i believe.
and i’m just taking a guess at this. but my guess is one ligament tear is bad enough. the prognosis for a SECOND tear on the SAME ligament. my guess is the prognosis takes a huge dip.
Just saw some doctor a little while ago on ESPN talking about it. He said should be a longer recovery time(a year) and arthritis could be a problem. He said Sam could come back but it’s going to be a long road. I know this doesn’t matter in terms of how the Rams approach this but it was just some general comments on this type of injury.

PA RamParticipantI will say that if Jake Long doesn’t play better they might as well start a line of discarded QBs outside Rams Park. They’ll need them.
Say it with me now: TE-BOW.
Just kidding.

August 24, 2014 at 5:46 pm in reply to: who should start? will they trade for someone? who? qb discussion #4838PA RamParticipantI don’t know, GRITS. I’d have to see it in a regular season game to believe he’s capable of being the starter.
For now, I don’t mind giving him a shot at back-up and if Hill gets hurt, we’ll see. But I’ll stick with Hill and his experience for now.

August 24, 2014 at 5:44 pm in reply to: who should start? will they trade for someone? who? qb discussion #4837PA RamParticipantNo Sanchez.
Not a fan. Just because he knows “the system” doesn’t mean he’s worth giving up picks for this year.
I’d rather go down in flames with Hill and Davis(or another vet) than give up any picks for Sanchez.

PA RamParticipantHe should miss 3 or 4 regular season games.
That early bye looks good now.
"Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. " Philip K. Dick
PA RamParticipantI think they’ll keep him but they will look for a starter–a young guy–in the draft and, as you said, next year is his last year. At best he will placehold the position for the rookie they’ll bring in. They certainly won’t give him big money now. He is no longer their guy. They have no choice but to move on in terms of the future. I don’t know if they save anything by letting him go at the end of this year–unless it’s a significant cap move.
Otherwise, they will hope that Hill can do a bit more than Clemens did. Davis has to be the back-up for now, unless they bring in another vet. Some interesting choices ahead.
"Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. " Philip K. Dick

Yeah–it’s time to get another QB.
Sam certainly has talent. But there is no way they can hang their hat on him.

This was my second attempt to record. Just got back from the movies and I see the stupid Saints. Thanks for tracking this down, zn. What a mess.
Never heard of virtual signage.

PA RamParticipantSome guys do–for whatever reason–seem to get more injured than others. I’m looking at you Rodger Saffold. If Amendola were here I’d be looking at him too. Some bodies just don’t hold up well. It’s nothing personal–it’s just the way it is. Some guys can walk through trains and it doesn’t matter. Other guys can’t tie their shoes without pulling a shoulder out of joint.
Bradford doesn’t have a great history.
Hopefully he dodged a bullet this time. But I am concerned about it.

PA RamParticipantHoly crap!
Just getting ready to watch the game and it looks like the Rams got clobbered with injuries tonight.
They can’t afford that.
If Johnson is done that really hurts.
If Bradford can’t stay healthy we are in big trouble. If he can’t play this year because of injuries the Rams will seriously have to look at moving on. I didn’t want to worry about QB this year. Now I do.

August 23, 2014 at 5:42 pm in reply to: Rams Team Value from Forbes & other "Rams to LA?" posts #4676PA RamParticipantI don’t get the Cowboys. They are a cult. They are immune to how they perform. You would think that would affect them but they still sell merchandise and tickets–across the country. I get older Cowboy fans but they have to keep growing new ones. How do they do it? I can see this generation liking the Pats or the Saints but the Cowboys? Is it the constant exposure of having them thrust upon us on national television?
Whatever it is–it works.
I can remember the Greatest Show on Turf years–the Cowboys would have at least as many if not more Monday night games. And they sucked. If the Rams had that record they couldn’t have gotten a highlight on Sportscenter.
As for the Rams moving?
Who knows?
The thing helping St. Louis is the competition in the L.A. market. But the fan base will not fully embrace a team if they think it’s leaving. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. There is a beautiful minor league stadium in my town they’re welcome to. The Pennsylvania Rams. Now that has a nice ring to it. Of course–I’ll be a fan because they never were my home team. But it will matter to some people. It sucks that this is the state of things to day. People can’t decide to emotionally invest in a local team when they don’t trust them to be there.
But that’s where we are.

And to have some fun.

PA RamParticipantShould be easy to identify whether his hands were up or not from the bullets entry location. If the entry wounds are on the under side of his arm his hands were up
Not just that. I know what I am about to say will sound stupid and maybe it is but the first thing to come into my head when you said that was a “Columbo” episode.
William Shatner staged a hold up to make it look like his victim was killed by a thug in a robbery. It was supposed to look like the victim tried to flee and the “robber” shot her.
But the victim was shot in the back with her hands up. Columbo figured it out because with your arms up it raises the shirt or clothes you’re wearing. The clothes had different entrance marks from the body because when the arms drop it rearranges the clothes and the wounds are higher than the holes.
I know life is more messy than a television show. But I do believe there are forensic ways to determine the arm position.
The whole thing is a mess.

PA RamParticipantMy boss is a HUGE fantasy football nut.
Anyway, every year I toss out a Rams player for him to consider.
Last year it was….Jared Cook. I know, I know.
So this year, a couple weeks ago he asked me about the Rams and I said…well, he’s suspended for 4 games but…Stedman Bailey.
He never heard of him. I informed him that IMO he was the Rams best receiver…by far.
After the Packers game I said to him….get Brian Quick.
I couldn’t even believe I was saying it. I know–it was two good plays on his part. Do we need to see more? Of course. But seeing it and reading the glowing reports makes me a bit excited about the potential for Quick.
For the record, he just kind of nodded thoughtfully and then said, hopefully: “I may draft the Rams defense.”
Okay.
But hey–I tried to give him a good tip.
Maybe he still remembers Cook.

PA RamParticipantNo injuries.
More deep balls from Bradford.
Better tackling.
"Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. " Philip K. Dick
PA RamParticipantIt’s a sort of sloppiness I’d like them to clean up. Yes–they aren’t sure where to be right now(at least the young guys)they aren’t scheming for teams, they aren’t even going 100 percent. But the one thing that bothers me is sloppiness. Sloppy tackling. That’s fundamentals stuff. On that first Lacy run they missed 4 tackles! That can’t happen. They need to clean that up. On the other hand, the Packers did not miss tackles. Even when a Ram had space, when the Packer player got there they wrapped up and ended the play.
That has to be fixed.

PA RamParticipantFrom Pro Football Focus:
St Louis – Three Performances of Note
Better from Bradford
Could this be the year Sam Bradford (+2.0) finally steps into that “top quarterback” group? He may well find it has to be, or he won’t be guaranteed the spot next year. The good news is he looked more aggressive downfield and had the accuracy to go with the intent. A beautiful throw to his receiver in stride on a post route (Q2, 12.36) was encouraging, as was the touchdown toss on the same series between two levels in a place only his teammate could get it (Q2, 8:07). He also seemed calmer under pressure, completing three of five rushed attempts for 50 yards. It was only 20 snaps but progress appears to have been made.
Rookie Woe for Robinson
Greg Robinson (-3.6) had something of a rude awakening in this one. Starting this game at left tackle he couldn’t handle Julius Peppers’ experience, giving up a hit to the former Bear (Q2, 11.18). Other than that he also gave up a hurry in his 18 pass- blocking snaps (-0.9). His issues in the run game were more significant, however, with a lowlight coming in the second quarter (9:06) where he showed poor technique to allow a tackle for loss. That play was subsequently followed by a holding call at the second level which detracted from his grade further and the former Auburn star will be disappointed he didn’t get into better position against the safety (Q2, 3:26). Overall, his struggles culminated in a -2.8 grade.
Linebackers Still A Concern
With Laurinaitis’ injury, Jeff Fisher has to be concerned about the state of his linebackers. Alec Ogletree (-1.2) still looks light weight against the run, struggling with guards at the second level in particular. JoLonn Dunbar (-0.5) doesn’t fill you with a huge amount of confidence, either, while Armstrong (-3.3) proved a disaster. The former hurricane actually improved on his Week 1 showing (-4.5) but was still pushed around easily in the run game and also graded negatively in coverage and as a pass rusher. The trio of backups don’t seem like they could step in if needed, with only Lawrence Wilson recording a positive grade.
Game Notes
– The Packers finished with a +7.7 run blocking grade.
– In 25 rushes, the Rams’ starting defensive end of Robert Quinn and Chris Long picked up just the solitary hurry
– Ethan Westbrooks and Michael Sam each picked up a sack, hit and hurry
PFF Game Ball
As it’s the preseason, I feel like I’m allowed to pick the punter so congratulations Johnny Hekker (+3.8).

August 18, 2014 at 6:18 am in reply to: Tavon's plays were not spectactular Saturday but, they were solid #4297PA RamParticipantI think they are trying to put Tavon in the right position for space. It’s just refining things. Faulk made a great point on that pass in the Packers game where Sam hit Tavon crossing in front of the linebacker. If he just waits a second for Tavon to clear the face of the linebacker and then hits him with the pass, Tavon has all kinds of room. He likely would have scored. He hit him a little early and the linebacker was able to make the tackle. Those are little things to work out, things between receiver and quarterback. But they know what they need to do with Tavon, I think. When everything clicks it’s going to be fun to watch.

PA RamParticipantI really find it so interesting how some people can judge a player with such accuracy after two preseason games.
I’m not sure anyone is trying to judge anyone with any accuracy. I think it’s just a response to what we’ve seen so far–in that very limited sample. I’m excited about Donald. Loved the pick. Players are always being judged, every game, every play. Fans will have opinions but that’s all they are. It’s no big deal.

PA RamParticipantGreatRamNTheSky wrote:
I watched Donald, in fact focused on his play and I was not that impressed. Is this guy everyone is raving about in camp?
If so, when is it going to translate to games?Grits
Because what you watched isn’t Donald. What you watched was Donald taking Brockers role in the defense with Brockers out. Donald isn’t Brockers, he wasn’t drafted to play that role, and he wasn’t going to look good doing it.
I thought with Donald last night they just sent him out there to take some hard reps as part of a learning curve.
When they use him the way he was drafted to be used, we will have more to judge him by.
Basically it was like asking Rod Perry to play MLB. Rod Perry not being able to play MLB doesn’t mean he can’t play what he is supposed to play.
While I agree with that–he has to be able to shed single blocks. On that Rodgers scramble the lineman was glued to him. But I agree that he will benefit in how they use him and if the intent was to just let him work hard this week it was a success. But on the other hand, he was sort of set up for failure. Hopefully it benefits him when they set him up for success. I’m not worried about him. I think he just needs time.
"Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. " Philip K. Dick
PA RamParticipantI think last week in the Saints game he flashed here and there. He is quick. But that alone won’t save him. He has work on technique, figure some things out, maybe get stronger. I think Donald CAN be really good–but I’m not sure he’s going to be part of any Fearsome Foursome II this year. He will play and the Rams will pick their spots with him. And by next year with another camp under his belt I think he may show more.
But there’s no doubt the Packers ate him for lunch this week.

August 17, 2014 at 12:05 pm in reply to: Torry Holt: Tavon Austin’s Biggest Impact Will be on Special Teams #4204PA RamParticipantAnd you know what? Torry Holt has never impressed me as being very bright. He’s a poorish commentator, IMO, who rarely offers more than platitudes and fuzziness.
Yeah–he offers something once in a while but I don’t think he has much of a future as a broadcaster. Last week he kept saying Ray-Ray Mcdonald. Five minutes into this week’s broadcast he said the same thing. Come on Torry–you gotta get the names right.
