nittany ramModeratorThere’s also this from Drew Boylhart:
I don’t believe for a minute Rams moved up to draft a division 2 QB. Its Goff all the way. He reminds me of Montana
North Dakota State isn’t Division II. It’s Division I AA. There’s a big gap between I AA and II. The NFL has many players from I AA programs. Some notable I AA QBs include Phil Simms, Joe Flacco, Steve McNair, Rich Gannon…oh, and Kurt Warner.
nittany ramModeratorJT is like Bernie only to a much lesser extent, in that he allows his emotions to influence his reporting. For example, the Rams are not a team with “lots of holes on the roster” as JT states. There are holes at WR and QB, possibly LT. TE could use an upgrade but I wouldn’t call it a ‘hole’ per se.
I don’t want to understate the problems facing this team. They haven’t had a winning season since the late Cretaceous but the reason the Rams have not won over the past few years is due to their issues at QB and to a lesser extent WR. They are in pretty good shape at just about every other position with the only issues being depth. Every team including the elite ones are dealing with this issue. Most of the roster is solid and there’s almost an embarrassment of riches at some positions like RB and along the DL. After all, they didnt have to overpay Jenkins because of the depth at CB.
They have some issues but from a roster perspective the Rams are in better shape than JT implies.

nittany ramModeratorGoff, the small-handed fumbling spread offense QB? Leave it to the Rams to trade away the farm only to pick the wrong QB. 😉
nittany ramModeratorThe Rams have to deal with Russell Wilson for the next 10 years. The needed a guy that can give them a shot. Three years from now, no one will miss those picks but they will be happy if they got their guy at QB.
Well, the Rams have been beating Russell Wilson with the Hills, Keenums and Foles of the world. Not sure they need to give up the farm to compete with Seattle.
But they certainly do need a better QB to become elite. Word is they are targeting Wentz. If that’s true, hopefully he can become the QB they need to make the leap.

nittany ramModeratorToo steep a price, imo. I don’t like it.
It’s a huge roll of the dice.
This trade would make sense if there was a projected Peyton Manning level QB in this draft.
But there isn’t so it doesn’t.
Yep. Agreed. It’s a huge price and a big risk. But what’s the alternative? 7-8 wins is all we’re going to get out of the current lineup, imo. Maybe, with some luck and health we win 9.
I think it’s a risk the Rams have to take.
On the other hand, I’m not 100% certain the Rams keep the #1 pick. Snead has been wheeling and dealing more than any GM in the league for the last few years. Anything could happen between now and the draft.
EDIT: Sorry. I screwed up the quote thingy.
You make a good point about shaking up the status quo. No-one should expect significant improvement on offense if the Rams are just going to trot out the same marginal QBs again. But did they have to move up all the way to number 1 to get one of these good (but nowhere near elite) QB prospects? That is too steep a price for any “not-ready-for-primetime-player” not named Bill Murray.
I agree with Ag. This is more about Stan wanting to make opening day in LA the biggest extravaganza he possibly can.

nittany ramModeratorI dunno. Watching those highlites, I get the impression that the GFL is on par with AAA highschool football. Quad A at best. It would be easy for a really athletic guy to stand out in that situation even if he didn’t have exceptional football skills. I hope the Rams are looking at other WR’s with more interest.
nittany ramModeratorThere is a Miss United States contest? Or does that mean she’s representing the United States in the Miss Universe contest? And why can’t these pageants expand to Mars and Pluto anyway? I mean–is Earth’s winner REALLY Miss Universe? Do we know for sure there are no other signs of intelligent pageants out there?

And why should only humanoids win? Should the gelatinous blob-like beings of Alpha Centauri be excluded from a beauty contest simply because they are translucent so you can see their food being digested or because their sensory tendrils continuously exude a sulphurous gas that can clear a room like nobody’s business? Should that disqualify them from a contest that claims to represent the entire universe?
To be fair, they are really, really ugly.

nittany ramModeratorLike PA, I know someone who had hip replacement surgery. After the procedure he was able to walk normally and without pain for the first time in his life. And this was 20 years ago so given the advancements since that time I think your wife should expect an excellent outcome.
Best of luck.
nittany ramModeratorif jared cook goes on and has a 1000 yard season with green bay i’ll vomit.
Apparently teams value measurables over performance. When they see Cook they see his size and speed and the length of his arms but fail to see the drops. Often those drops have cost the Rams games. Cook has snatched defeat from the jaws of victory more than once with his inconsistency.
Or maybe they think they can ‘fix’ him. Even though this is a pattern established over 7 seasons so I doubt it’s fixable.

w
vThe lesson is that if they had drafted Matt Ryan they would have won more than just one Super Bowl.
March 24, 2016 at 7:11 pm in reply to: Feel the Bernie… Stories You Won’t See On HBO’s “Hard Knocks” With the LA Rams #41005
nittany ramModeratorOne thing about the move I’m definitely glad about – I won’t have to rely on Bernie for Rams news anymore. The thing is, I sorta like Bernie and I can’t help but be amused at his rantings. But I don’t recall any satirical tirades against the Rams when Georgia moved the team to St Louis,so his sudden realization that the NFL is a soulless, uncaring behemoth that steps on its fans like a petulant child at an anthill rings a little hollow.
March 24, 2016 at 9:39 am in reply to: question: do you support the idea of the NFL expanding overseas? #40984
nittany ramModeratorDear communist: St. Louis failed on the one thing that matters—revenue.
But that wasn’t St. Louis’ fault. Revenue would have been higher if the Rams had simply charged more for tickets and/or merchandise instead of the pittance they asked for. St. Louis was done in by Kroenke’s generous nature.
Although, to be fair, no one in St Louis offered to pay more money either. I mean if St. Louis was serious about keeping the Rams they could have set up a tithing system or perhaps a system where wages of the residents were garnished to ensure an uninterrupted stream of cash was flowing into the Rams coffers at all times…
So I guess there are no real football fans in St. Louis afterall.
March 24, 2016 at 8:55 am in reply to: question: do you support the idea of the NFL expanding overseas? #40975
nittany ramModeratorSorta depends on where the team is located. The UK would be alright because there’s a 6 hour time difference with us on the east coast. Games played at 7 pm in the UK would equate to a 1 pm start time for the east coast of the US and a 10 am start time for those on the west coast. That’s manageable.
But games in China, Korea or Japan? Those countries are so far away that the time difference is only calculable by NASA. Did you know that today is actually yesterday there? The players union should be opposed to forcing players to travel back and forth through time. And who knows what effect time displacement will have on CTE?
But is it fair for the NFL to place teams in London or Munich or Seoul where American football is just a novelty at best when cities with an established football tradition and long-time fans like St. Louis don’t have one?

nittany ramModeratorThe Eagles, switching to a 4-3 defense under Schwartz, need depth at defensive tackle behind projected starters Fletcher Cox and Bennie Logan. Fairley could provide that depth.
The Rams need depth too but I wouldn’t be upset to see Fairley sign elsewhere. He played well for the Rams last season but given his history I’m not sure I’d want to sign him to a multi year deal.
March 13, 2016 at 10:23 am in reply to: Demoff, "Rams have been really crappy in free agency" #40542
nittany ramModeratorYou are not going to hit on every contract. But, I fault Demoff for not signing any potential free agents before they hit the market this year. I hope he does better with the 2017 year.
Agreed. Right now his focus should be getting Donald locked up forever.
nittany ramModeratorJohn Goodman is long overdue for an Oscar.
In the meantime Mark Rylance and his bland performance in “Bridge of Spies” gets one.
As for this film? Isn’t this a sequel? The first “Cloverfield” was one of those handheld type things and I wasn’t crazy about it. Is this one really better?
I do love Mary Elizabeth Winstead though. I think she SHOULD get more “serious” type roles. She’s kind of become a bit of a scream queen and she can do more than that.
Maybe I’ll check it out.
No, as zn said, this is not a sequel and may not even take place in the same fictional universe as the original Cloverfield. I liked the original, but the problem with all those ‘handheld’ films that makes them annoyingly hard to watch is that in reality the guy holding the camera would simply say “f**k this”, drop the camera and run.
The Cloverfield franchise may become sort of an anthology, where you have a bunch of weird but unrelated stories under one name – sorta like the Twighlight Zone, although there has been talk of making a true sequel to 10 Cloverfield Lane.
nittany ramModeratorGreat move by the Rams to retain a key part of that DL rotation.
I dunno. I wasn’t impressed by Sims last year. Once he entered the regular rotation to replace Quinn, IMO he got exposed. He can make plays, it seems to me, when he is a rotational guy who can play with some energy because he doesn’t have to pace himself. Once he was out there for multiple snaps, he was lacking. JF even referred to him as “improving”…which is a bad sign for a 5 year vet (which he was last year). 1.5 sacks in 9 starts? I think if he had that much to offer, he would have gotten snapped up in free agency.
Yeah, I see little to be wowed about with Sims’ play. Plus, he seems to commit more than his share of untimely personal fouls.
nittany ramModeratorThere are no FA QBs available that are sure-fire upgrades over what the Rams already have. Might as well concentrate on those FAs at positions that do represent upgrades and look for a QB in the draft.
nittany ramModerator“Pragmatic,” to me, is just marketing. It’s a positive-sounding label for basically sticking with the status quo while making baby steps towards progress.
Hillary isn’t “pragmatic.” She’s a sell-out. She will certainly make baby steps in the right direction, like Obama did, but you cannot reasonably expect her to change the way business is done. In banking. In campaign finance. In gerrymandering. In corporate personhood.
In foreign policy, she’s an imperialist. Straightforward, dominate the globe militarily.
I don’t know why Bernie’s platform is impractical. Universal Health Care seems to be pragmatic in every other advanced country, as well as several countries one could not call “advanced.” So is paid maternity leave.
Every single progressive achievement has been “not pragmatic” at some point: abolition, women’s suffrage, civil rights, desegregation, 40-hour work week, everything.
Besides which – and here is the kicker – nobody has yet even bothered to explain why “reaching too far” means that one will end up with less than if one “reaches nearby.” It’s just stated as Fact by Hillary supporters.
We didn’t abolish slavery by reaching for a six-day work week. We didn’t achieve women’s suffrage by pushing to have women’s votes count for 3/5 of a man’s vote. We didn’t get desegregation by asking for African Americans to get 2% of the student population. I am supposed to believe that Hillary is going to make more progress that Sanders? Really?
No fucking way.
Screw Hillary. I cannot, in good conscience, vote for her under any circumstances.
Her victory will only serve to reinforce the Business-as-Usual conduct of this government, and that just is not acceptable to me at all. You can take your Clintons, Obamas, your Gary Harts, and just shove them. I am having none of it.
This.

nittany ramModeratorAs @JasonLaCanfora reported, Patriots are hosting restricted FA running back Benny Cunningham (Rams) on a visit today.
— Mike Reiss (@MikeReiss) March 10, 2016
I hope we keep Benny. We should have used the 2cd round tender. imo
Losing Benny would be a HUGE blow to this offense. Great pass blocker, receiver and a decent runner. He is one of the few bright spots on offense. If Benny gets away it will be one of Snisher’s biggest gaffs.

March 10, 2016 at 1:11 pm in reply to: Peyton Manning Rumors:Rams Refusal To Guarantee Starting Job Drove QB To Retire #40356
nittany ramModeratorFigures. They took football away from an entire city; it wouldn’t be beyond them to deprive the rest of the country of one more year of one of the best quarterbacks ever.
He is one of the best ever. But his days of being a good QB in the NFL were most likely over. The Rams were right not to guarantee him a starting job.
nittany ramModeratorThe impression I got from reading Wagner and others was that resigning Barron was their biggest priority, so at least they accomplished that.

nittany ramModeratorI thought they released Lauranitis and Long so they could resign the secondary? I guess they didn’t see this coming. I figured JJ would be hard to resign but isn’t Mcleod’s contract unusually large for a safety?
March 9, 2016 at 12:41 pm in reply to: Man Who Assaulted Black Woman At Trump Rally Learns It Ruined His Life #40214
nittany ramModeratorIf Trump is serious about universal healthcare then that would make him somewhat more palatable. Universal heathcare or not I would take a Trump presidency over a Cruz presidency any day.
nittany ramModeratorWhat bothers me the most about Trump is how his racist rhetoric seems to attract voters instead of repel them. I mean, of course he attracts KKK members and white supremacists who wear their hatred on their sleeves and are only too proud to show it. But a larger segment of the population who harbor racist ideals but keep them hidden for the most part now they feel emboldened to openly cheer on his rhetoric. He’s empowered their bigotry which leads to events like the assaulting of people of color at his rallies. I think there’s a substantial segment of white people who are threatened and angered by what they perceive as the ‘browning’ of America and they see Trump as their white savior.
Throwing the racist and bigotry card around won’t work this time. The people are fed up. The two tiered justice system that doesn’t work for the average guy. The two tiered economy that only works for the top 1%. Campaign rhetoric to get elected then the reality of governance for the lobbyists. Under Obama black unemployment has doubled. Playing the race card is ridiculous given the state of the economy and the assault on liberty and personal privacy through never ending Homeland Security excuses. Government that refuses to obey its own laws while imprisoning its citizens at an alarming rate. The people are sick of the hypocrisy. Trump is seen as the candidate willing to right the ship of state.
Well, if mentioning a fact is playing a card, then I guess I’m playing a card. I’m not saying all Trump supporters are racist but being a Trump supporter means you have to support a candidate who espouses racist ideals. To some folks, I guess that doesn’t ‘trump’ his positions on other issues.
Bernie Sanders speaks out against all the things you just listed but he doesn’t attract racist supporters.
What racist ideals does Trump espouse? Ideals, not the projecting of your fear. Give these racist ideals substance. List them. Succinctly describe them. Then I’ll reply in kind to each description from this Trump supporters view. Drive byes are easy. Lets strive for better.
Well, this has all been covered quite extensively in the media. Here’s an example…
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/donald-trump-racist-examples_us_56d47177e4b03260bf777e83
This has to be quick because I have to go to work but let’s look at the hateful rhetoric Trump spewed about Mexicans and other Latinos…
What he said is conclusively incorrect.
Mexicans are actually leaving the US at a higher rate than they’re entering it. And immigrants commit crimes at a lower rate than US citizens.

nittany ramModeratorI, too, vote on policy first. Then electibility (did I just invent a word?).
And so I’m astonished at the rise of Trump and Sanders. I mean, Trump seems to have convinced his followers that he could just wave his magic Trump wand, add a few crumbs of his power of personality, and poof! All of our problems are solved. None of those voters seem to understand civics, the three branches of government and how they (sometimes) work in concert. Sanders has the same problem. If elected, he has a rats chance in hell of getting 10 percent of his agenda passed, even with a Democrat-controlled congress. And his crew, mainly the young ones, are every bit as clueless as Trump’s are about how a republic works versus Scandinavia, of all places.
I think you’re right; it’s emotion born of anger. And that’s a scary thing.
