Yeah, I don’t think this is a scapegoat situation. There were some problems between Wilks and Shanahan throughout the season, and they had different philosophies for the defense. Wilks was supposed to embrace Shanahan’s system, but there were times he didn’t do it. Shanahan and Lynch overruled Wilks on his gameplan against Seattle, and Shanahan called a timeout in the Super Bowl to overrule a defensive play call at one point. There was also some kind of fiasco at the end of the first half against Minnesota. This wasn’t the 49ers throwing somebody under the bus for the loss.

Well look who comes running to Shanny’s and the 9ers’ defense.  What a surprise.  Not.

Sorry if I struck a nerve. I know you’re struggling to get over the Super Bowl loss and here I am adding insult to injury.  I’ll try to remember that not everyone is as happy about the 9ers implosion as Rams fans are.

I wonder who Raheem will take with him?  Will the Rams promote a current coach or look elsewhere?
Seems like Aubrey Pleasant has paid his dues and should be in line for a coordinator position.

Whew, I opened this thread in trepidation that you had finally decided to come out of the closet on how you’ve always been a Niner fan. 🙂

    Blasphemer!

Ah well. SF pulls it out. They dont look unbeatable anymore though, do they. w v

Which only makes the Rams’ loss to the Lions more frustrating.  The NFC is ripe for the taking.

Anybody got anything to say? Just rooting against the 49ers?

Yup.  The 9ers have to lose.

    That’s all that matters.

Don’t care how it happens, and it doesn’t have to happen this week, but it has to happen.

The Rams are the only team I root for.  Every other team in the league falls somewhere between ambivalence and hatred. I used to be ambivalent about the Lions, but they have shifted toward the dislike range of the scale.  They are a dirty team.  I hope the season ends in sadness for them and their fans.

    I would prioritize signing Dotson.

    I’d sign DRob, and Jackson.

I’d love to have Wentz back but that’s probably not possible.

Hope Higbee can be healthy before the start of next season.  Fortunately the Rams have some nice depth at TE.

I don’t buy the defender’s claim he wasn’t trying to hurt Higbee. He has a history of this.

You can’t outlaw all hits below the waist (can you imagine trying to tackle a guy like Earl Campbell if you couldn’t hit him below the waist?) but the NFL should outlaw hits directly to the knees.

Its hard not to be very-optimistic about next year. I mean, they really dont need much more. IF they hit on some draft picks, sign a couple solid vets, and stay healthy — they can have quite a year. I dont remember another year quite like this one. Maybe the 79 Super Bowl year is closest? They were 9-7 i think. We didnt expect an NFC title and a close game with the Steelers. Sometimes a team’s losses say more than the wins. Ya know. The Baltimore loss and Detroit loss said so much about this team. More than any of the wins, i would say. They showed heart as well as talent. Not a bad start to a third chapter for McVay. The Goff years. The Super Bowl run with Stafford. Now, the…what? We’ll see, i guess. w v

Obviously they need a place kicker.

Edge rusher, CB, o-line depth (assuming they can keep Dotson, if not this becomes a bigger need.

They should also draft a later round QB they can develop.

They need various things on defense. On offense IMO above all they need a true 1B running back. The Rams were a different team in games where Wms either didn’t play or was held to under 100. Like–yesterday. It follows that if you have another RB who can get premium yards, your offense is better off all the way around.

I also think they need a capable back-up QB.  Odds of Stafford playing all 17 games are about nil.  Maybe that guy is Stetson, maybe not, but they need a better option that the likes of Rypien…

it’s not necessarily true that the rams will just improve this off-season. henderson. possibly morris next. donald getting older. who knows what’s going on with kupp. now higbee gone for awhile.

They can still improve with all those losses and/or effects of age. They improved from 2022 to 2023 with far less to work with. For example, that actually included not just stabilizing the OL but upgrading the OL coaching. Between 2023 and 2024, no matter what the losses are, they have far more to work with than they did going into 2023.

If they get help for Donald he might look better (ie better numbers) even if his age is starting to show.

As a matter of fact. I expect it to happen if Turner continues to develop and they sign a good FA edge rusher.

With the exception of Aaron Donald, Raheem’s defense was better than the sum of its parts.  Somehow he managed to put together an effective defense with Witherspoon,  Kendrick, et. al.

    I wish him well.

    Bad officiating.

    Bad tackling.

    Bad red zone execution.

The Rams almost overcame all three to win a playoff game against a really good team in a hostile environment.

As it is, they came up a little short but what a season from a rebuilding team that’s WAY ahead of schedule.

    Can’t wait for next season.

Now, somebody beat the 9ers. Preferably before the Super Bowl, but if not, definitely in the Super Bowl.

    That’s all that matters now.

When the trade went down, I remember being against it.

At the time, I thought Goff might still be able to salvage his career with the Rams.

I also didn’t realize how good Stafford was.  To me, he just seemed like a much older, worn-out version of Goff.

But as good as Goff is, Stafford is an order of magnitude better.

Think about the Super Bowl against Cincy and the NFC Championship game against the Bucs prior to that… i don’t think the Rams win either of those games with Goff at QB.

    Adam Schefter@AdamSchefter

    Lions-Rams 2021 trade proved to be a win-win.
Rams acquired Matthew Stafford and won a Super Bowl.
Lions landed Jared Goff and, through additional trades

The Rams DON’T win the Super Bowl if they don’t make that trade.

The Lions DON’T rebuild their team if they don’t make that trade.

I see a lot of Rams and Lions fans claiming their team “won” the trade.

    Nope.

Both teams got exactly what they wanted from it.

Well, since I arrived in Las Vegas yesterday morning, I am going to have to put some money where my mouth is.

    Well whatta’ ya know…

For decades zooey has been prancing about the board acting all sanctimonious – looking upon us with disdain whenever we penned a bawdy remark.  We would have to endure lengthy pearl-clutching tirades with every utterance that offended his piousness…

    Special teams.

    That’s my fear.

The Rams miss one or more very makeable FGs that costs them the game.

Of course, that leaves out that Goff has played more games, and Stafford can make every throw Goff can make, but Goff cannot make throws Stafford makes, and that Stafford has a Lombardi.

Cherry picked stats to support a preconceived belief.

One wonders if this had something to do with Shanahan beating McVay so often. Always seems like Shanahan is one step ahead of McVay,  w v

In an interview on the Rich Eisen Show, Whitworth said the reason was that the Rams usually couldn’t match the physicality of Shanahan’s 9ers.  On those few occasions they did match it, they won, like in the NFC Championship.  He said the Rams reinvented themselves this season into being a more physical football team.  Maybe the new coaches were hired with that in mind or perhaps they helped McVay see that they needed to become more physical after they were hired.

Enh. I’ve seen all this too many times now. Somebody doing really well on a line with Aaron Donald. I dunno how good Turner really is. He’s certainly played well, and he’s ‘solid’ and he was a great draft pick. But more than that, I dunno. w v

    Agreed.

Turner has 1 more sack than Donald but 8 fewer QB hits and a lot fewer QB hurries.

This might suggest that Turner isn’t great at producing consistent pressure on his own, but instead is taking advantage of the attention Donald receives.

That’s not necessarily a rip on Turner. As already pointed out there have been plenty of guys who have lined up beside Donald and not performed as well as he has.

But I’m not ready to say he’s anything more than a solid player yet either.

    From the article…

Havrisik scored an impressive -367.8 on the Sam Slowman Suckiness Index, easily besting previous leader Brett Maher’s score of -2.

Hmmm, didn’t know that was a thing.
