InvaderRamModerator
i hate to nitpick, but the only thing i would want for this defense is an elite edge rusher.
i don’t know if he’s already on the roster and needs to be developed or if he needs to be drafted. but that could take this defense to like all time status.
InvaderRamModeratori think they can.
niners are injured. at key positions.
it won’t be easy though.
InvaderRamModeratoroh. i’m not saying average at best.
i’m saying average at worst.
InvaderRamModeratorgoff’s rankings in passer rating among all qbs during his time with mcvay.
2017 – 5th
2018 – 8th
2019 – 22nd
2020 – 15th2019 is an aberration as he was forced to throw it a lot. and usually that’s bad for qbs. no matter how good you are. you’re just going to suffer stats-wise. this season has been much more balanced.
his ypa in 2020 is also low ranking only 18th. in 2017 and 2018, he was in the top 5. in 2019, he was 15th. is part of that playcalling? yeah.
InvaderRamModeratorWell, to me it doesn’t. To me it just means season averages can be deceptive. They can hide the way one bad patch can be followed by a long good patch. The qb hit a valley, learned from it, got steadier. The real 15th rank qb does not play like Goff did Monday.
If he continues to be up and down, then the average makes sense.
If across 8 games after Miami he plays significantly better than he did in the 2nd quarter of the season then the average is hiding something.
we’ll find out soon enough. like i said. this season and one more year. 22 more games. possibly 38 more games. most likely 22 games.
his game against tampa bay was good. not great. passers against tampa bay average around 91. goff had a 98 passer rating.

InvaderRamModeratorTo me, that doesn’t mean anything.
they certainly mean something. still 6 games to play. we’ll see how it ends. he’s got maybe one or two more years to show how how his ceiling can be. but he’s close to it.
InvaderRamModeratorhe’s 15th in passer rating.
18th in ypa.
8th in passing yards.
15th in completion percentage.
he’s been about average this year. i think his ceiling is above average. good. but not great. not top 5. possibly top 10. but at least consistently 10-15. at least.
InvaderRamModeratorhappy thanksgiving, everyone.
InvaderRamModeratori wouldn’t say it’s just the playcalling though.
right before the bucs scored to tie the game, the rams just had a terrible sequence. there was the missnap, and then goff just throws a brainfart of an interception.
i’m not saying this is all on goff. but the offense as a whole just seems to have these huge mental errors. consistently. all season. some of it is goff. some of it is mcvay. and like with that missnap it is other players on offense.
i’m just not sure what is going on.
on mcvay specifically. he just turtles it sometimes when i feel like he should be more aggressive and go for the killshot.
the rams outgained the bucs 413 to 251. they possessed the ball 33:13 to the bucs 26:47. turnovers were even 2-2.
yet they only win by 3 points??? that’s concerning to me. is it a win? sure. so i can’t complain too much. but still. if we’re talking about superbowl aspirations, this has to be concerning. and it’s not just this game. it’s been all season.
but also. damn. that defense. held the bucs to 251 yards? that’s crazy. that’s awesome. so good to see.
InvaderRamModeratorlove watching this defense.
but mcvay has to stay aggressive. i know he trusts the defense. but he can’t keep putting them in bad situations. there was a point where the rams could have put this game away, and they literally almost gave it away.
rams are 5th in total offense but only 17th in scoring. are they just not finishing drives?
InvaderRamModeratorWhat I don’t like is the Rams’ placekicker, whoever that is this week.
yeah. could be the difference in the game…
InvaderRamModeratorI like to watch the linebackers and safeties for stashed talent who could grow into a role on the active roster. Right now, I think the frontrunner is a guy who also was making some heads turn (in slow-motion, Fabio style) at training camp: Christian Rozeboom. I’d be surprised if he didn’t earn an active roster spot by this time next year.
that’s good news. i wonder how williams and hoecht are developing as well.
InvaderRamModeratortoughest game of the season so far.
i’m pretty sure the defense handles the tb offense.
i just have no idea if the rams offense shows up. or more specifically if goff shows up.
InvaderRamModeratorthis defense can get better. and that’s crazy. this was a big test. and they showed a lot. but i still came away feeling like this defense can get better. and that wouldn’t be a terrible thing.
what is terrible is losing whit. i think this offense struggles even more. i think goff suffers. i will be rooting for noteboom though.
InvaderRamModeratorhave yet to watch the game, but i saw that whit was carted off for a knee injury?
well that sucks.

InvaderRamModeratori’ll be honest. some of you guys got me a little shook. i mean this couldn’t possibly happen could it? could trump turn this country into a dictatorship? that would have to be the mother of all hail marys.
InvaderRamModeratorYoung also said DC Brandon Staley showed them clips of 7-on-7 work from training camp to show how tangible their progress has been and how good they can become.
yeah. reps. this defense needed reps. and with more reps they should get even better. especially with robinson coming back. fuller coming back. lewis hopefully getting more comfortable.
i hope the rams can keep staley just a little bit longer.
InvaderRamModeratorIf a football coach went into a game saying “we’ll rely on passing the ball,” executed that strategy, lost the game, then blamed the loss on running the ball, everyone would laugh at that coach. And yet that’s exactly the approach Democratic moderates are taking after Tuesday’s disappointing House and Senate results: Reject progressives’ suggestions, then blame those suggestions anyway for their failures.
erm… correct me if i’m wrong, but doesn’t that sound a lot like… trump tactics?

InvaderRamModeratori say. i say good for her. i hope she stays in politics.

One thing I’ll say: for the last two years, I and progressive candidates have been unseating powerful Dem incumbents supported by DCCC.
Not *once* has anyone in the party asked me what weaknesses I’ve found in their operation.
If they stop blaming progressives, we can help.

InvaderRamModeratorGuessing your kiddin.
yours would be the dream. mine would be the nightmare.
hahahaha. yeah. i’m kidding.
InvaderRamModeratorThe wicked witch is dead!!
well. at least until 2024. biden trump II – trump lives.
InvaderRamModeratorMcVay and Goff have to do better.
yeah. that’s really what this comes down to. mcvay and goff.
InvaderRamModeratoroffense is worse than i thought it would be.
defense is better than i thought it would be.
special teams are a dumpster fire.
overall the rams are slightly worse than i thought they would be. i didn’t think they’d be capable of the huge brain fart they had to end the first half of the season. i mean what a disaster.
i still think goff is capable of being a top 10 qb. with this defense and this running game, i think goff is capable of leading this team.
i wonder how the second half of the season goes for this defense. they’re already ranked number one overall in total yards at this point. but i think they can get better. they can get better in run defense and better in the pass rush. when i think of the rams, i think mostly about robinson and lewis. and what kind of contributions they can make in the second half of the season. robinson especially. just loads of potential. loads of power and athleticism. the rams defense hasn’t really had anyone like him since possibly suh. but suh was near the end of his career. robinson is only 25 but has disappointed so far. was he playing the wrong system? is the system to unlock his talents? i’ll be curious to find out. but i also like lewis. he’s a rookie so expectations should be tempered. but at the same time, i could see him making a bigger impact as the season wears on.
InvaderRamModeratorsean and jared. they screwed it up. miami had no business being in this game except for the stupid decisions made by those 2. unbelievable. but. i think they can learn from this. i think they will learn from this.
I don’t think McVay will learn. He has been consistently pass happy lately.
He planned to pass against the Niners. And it failed miserably.
That was his plan against the Bears. And the Rams got lucky. That was a 10-3 game when Kahlil Mack sacked Goff and forced a fumble on 3rd and 2. If the Bears recovered that ball, that game could have been completely different.
The Washington game was kinda similar, but their offense was so terrible that day that the Rams pass happy approach didn’t matter.
well. i’m not completely convinced.
the rams are 4th the nfl in rushing attempts per game. so i’m not sure what happened. but i wouldn’t characterize mcvay as pass happy necessarily. maybe a result of just thinking too much? i have no idea.
the one thing that gives me hope is mcvay i believe has only been calling plays since he got to the rams. he never called plays when he was with washington. so. i have no idea how what kind of learning curve there is as a playcaller.
or maybe mcvay has to hand over playcalling duties.
but i definitely don’t think you get rid of him.
November 2, 2020 at 11:28 pm in reply to: on Staley & the NUMBER ONE RATED defense … VERY updated #123768InvaderRamModeratorwell. at least for one week. the rams’ defense is number one in total yards.
November 2, 2020 at 7:54 pm in reply to: on Staley & the NUMBER ONE RATED defense … VERY updated #123761InvaderRamModeratori’m not yet convinced this is a top 5 defense. they’re 6th in yards allowed and 2nd in points allowed.
i’m still somehow not convinced though. i think they’re a good defense. i don’t know that they are a top 5 defense.
i hope i’m wrong. and i do think they have the potential to get better still.
hmmm… i may have to rethink my stance.
also. if the giants put up 297 yards of total offense on the bucs tonight, the rams become the number one defense in the nfl.
now… that’s a tall order to ask of the giants. they’re horrible. they only average 282 yards of total offense…
InvaderRamModeratorGoodLord, are you kidding me. WTF.
——————-
“…They outgained the Dolphins 471 to 145, had 31 first downs to Miami’s eight, averaged 5.1 yards per play compared to only 3.0 for the Dolphins, and converted on seven of their 17 third-down attempts. The Dolphins, on the other hand, were 3-for-12 on third down…”yeah.
sean and jared. they screwed it up. miami had no business being in this game except for the stupid decisions made by those 2. unbelievable. but. i think they can learn from this. i think they will learn from this.
it happens. but no way do i get rid of either of them. rams can’t possibly be that stupid.
InvaderRamModeratortrying to look at the bright side.
rams defense is now #2 in yards allowed.
#4 in rushing yards allowed.
#2 in passing yards allowed.#4 in points allowed (well… tied for #3 with kansas city). and only half a point per game from being #1.
pretty impressive. half the season officially in the books.
i’m still waiting for the seattle game. arizona game could be a challenge too. both ranked #1 and #2 in total offense.

InvaderRamModeratorbad 🐟 🌮.
defense was excellent. running game was tough. passing game and special teams let the team down.
