Knowing what you know after a season
and a half — would you draft Tavon
    at the no.8 spot again?

    Yes? No? Maybe?
    Dunno?

I doubt if i would. The experiment
    has been disappointing so far.

Maybe he’ll come on a bit in year
three like Quick did. Maybe not.

I’m not happy about the way BS
uses him, but thats a separate subject.

    Well…disappointing?

Too soon for me to say.

Here’s one example of why IMO it’s too soon to say:

    ==

    http://www.101sports.com/2014/11/12/three-plays-defined-rams-loss-cardinals/

With 7:31 left on the clock, the Rams face a first-and-10 from their own 25-yard line. They come out in an off-set I with receivers Tavon Austin and Kenny Britt lined up to the left of the formation, and Chris Givens as the lone receiver to the right.

Austin comes in motion toward the line of scrimmage and, at the snap, runs a crossing pattern that results in him being wide open as Patrick Peterson (who was in man-to-man coverage on Givens) runs into safety Rashad Johnson, while Givens takes his route inside the numbers. But instead of an easy completion to Austin, Davis looks off Britt (who was double-covered on a deep route) and throws a horrendous pass that Peterson easily intercepts near midfield.

There are three telling factors about this play. One, Davis has trouble seeing the field because if he could, he would have seen that Austin was wide open. Two, Davis doesn’t have the arm strength to complete the deep out because if he did, he may have still been able to get the pass over Peterson and to Givens for a big completion. Three, the Rams’ offense is struggling so much right now that even when things break their way (i.e. Peterson taking out his own teammate in coverage), they still can’t seize the moment.

Patterson would have been the better choice.

What I said before the draft. One of them would be there at #16. I would draft Patterson before Tavon. I liked them both. Nothing has changed for me.

In total – unadulterated hindsight there would be no way that I would draft Tavon Austin at the 8 spot. I really thought he was going to add a higher element of explosiveness than we’ve seen to date. He could come on – we’ll see. It seems to me that his quickness isn’t as big of an asset in the pro game as it was in college. And, his diminutive size has me cringing for his safety and his ball security every time he’s got the ball in any kind of traffic. He’s exciting when he does break one but the penalties have really cost the Rams and Tavon. Most opposing safeties look like they have 50, 60 lbs of muscle on him and are just as fast and are looking to plaster his ass back to Morgantown.

Seems to me that the top 8 picks from the 2013 draft still have a lot of question marks by their names. Cooper hasn’t started yet after a lost rookie season. Ansah and Mingo have had the most impact I would think. Eric Fisher was moved to LT this season after redshirting at G last year and I think has been decent. Jordan looks like a bust so far. Everybody laughed when Dallas drafted the Center Fredericks at 31 but who’s laughing now? Rams could have used a decent young center to replace Wells.

I’d say Hopkins at 27 has been the best WR so far from the first round. Patterson has flashed some but has been inconsistent as well.

I don’t know who or what I would have done even now but the Rams had a dire need for a saftety then and I still like Vacarro. I’m still rooting for Tavon to become the explosive weapon I thought he would – we’ll see.

The Rams have to be able to spread the field for Austin to be most effective and they really can’t do that given their limitations at quarterback. That said, I probably wouldn’t draft him at No. 8 again. He’s a player that needs a unique set of conditions to truly thrive, and a creative offensive mind to unleash that potential. The Rams really offer up neither. I, however, wouldn’t label him a bust. A lot of explosive plays that he has made have been called back by penalty. It’s almost comical how many times he has had plays called back. Not a top ten pick, but useful nonetheless.

I would not trade up him for him. Either then, or now.

Drafting him didn’t bother me. However, trading up for him wasn’t the best idea. The Rams still had a lot of weak spots on the team.

Bad teams should never trade up.

I was excited when they picked him.

    The results have been…disappointing.

On the other hand I’m not sure who they should have taken.

undecided. frankly i’m surprised he hasn’t been better this season. i’m wondering if schottenheimer is using him correctly or if the qb problem has affected his play. maybe under hill things change a bit?

No. I didn’t want a such a diminutive WR picked in the 1st round in 2103, and nothing has happened to change my mind about that. Having said that, I was hoping for Patterson and he hasn’t lit the world on fire either.

To me you only have to ask yourself one question – would he be a disappointment with his numbers as a second round pick? The answer to me is yes.

That being said, shotty doesn’t do his best to get him into the game. They force screens to him, but never much down field. Do the rams even run slants anymore?

He always seemed like Desmond Howard type….historically, fast shrimps Don’t do well. So far he hasn’t been as good as Deamond Howard.

He is exactly what I was afraid he was going to be.

Lot of guys are down on him. I am not. I actually think that with Davis at qb, Tavon wasn’t going to get much action…but that was more Davis than Tavon. See my post above, which describes one play where Davis just flat did not see him running wide open (it was on the play that led to the 1st INT against ARZ.) I won’t make any judgements about how Tavon is doing until I see how it goes in some games with Hill.

    I don’t think he warranted trading up to #8, so I guess…no.

And I don’t buy that Schottenheimer is responsible for “not getting him in space.”

That just applies to every player. Get them in space, and they can make a big play.

Meanwhile, the real gamebreakers make big plays on routine plays. You didn’t have to get Faulk in space, or Ellard, or Bruce, or Dickerson, or whoever. You just gave them the ball. You don’t trade up to #8 for a guy whose only job is going to be to make 1.25 Big Plays a game on 4.7 touches.

Same here. The issue I have is, what if we had more of a dynamic OC, say like a Chip Kelly type? Just saying. I feel B.S. is not the guy who knows how to utilize our skill players talents.

    Yes, yes and yes.

I didn’t like the trade up then and I don’t like it now. Could have had Patterson and kept the draft pick.
