Star Trek and Star Wars are two of the oldest and most stalwart fandoms in the world, and they’ve had a friendly rivalry ever since they both showed up at the same convention. What’s more, while they’re both widely loved, they both have…let’s say some less celebrated moments in their history.

Which is why this is such a deep, deep burn.

For those who don’t have an encyclopedic knowledge of the two universes, that’s Bill Shatner (James Kirk) calling out Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca) on the Star Wars Holiday Special: a horrifying TV Christmas special that featured the main Star Wars cast travelling to Chewie’s home planet to meet his family, including father Itchy and son Lumpy.

It’s worse than it sounds: Carrie Fisher sang lyrics to the Star Wars theme. George Lucas once said that if he had the time, he would track down every copy of it in existence to smash with a hammer.

Unfortunately, he said that before the Internet caught on.

Epic burn, right? Well, Wookies aren’t known for backing down from a fight.

If you’re this far into the article, I don’t have to explain that The Final Frontier was directed by Shatner, and is considered one of the weaker Star Trek films. Spock has a brother and the Enterprise gets in a fight with God.

Nerd fights may require a lot of backstory, but they can be absolutely brutal.
Our advice? Bill, let the Wookie win.

You have to be odd, to be number one.

To me, Star Trek was better as a television series. Star wars is the better film franchise.

    Star Trek plays better small.

    Star Wars plays better large.

I disagree. Star Trek in both TV and movies is much better than Star Wars. Star Wars is the Chuck E Cheese of Sci-Fi.

The upside to being a Rams fan is heartbreak.

I think the characters in the original Star Trek are much more interesting than those in Star Wars. I am more of a fan of the tv series than the movies.

The Star Trek movies have been pretty much bad, true.

I personally am not as much interested in the Star Wars movies. Though I know them.

The Star Trek series, I always liked, but not in a “big fan” kinda way. I actually watched the series when it was first broadcast. My friends and I got excited by the commercials for the series before it started, because the ship looked so cool. So we all watched from opening night.

From star trek I learned that entire civilizations on other planets consisted of 6 people who all spoke english.

Star Trek kicks Star Wars ass everyday and twice on Sunday.
The last Star Trek movie (which I just got done watching) was pretty good too.

I loved the first two Star Trek movies but I was disappointed with the third movie. I’ll give it more time then watch it again maybe I’ll think differently.

Why are you people discussing two LOSER shows, when you COULD be talking
about the second BATTLESTAR GALACTICA series. Which was the best sci-fi series, like, ever.

Was never really a fan of either BG efforts. However I did enjoy the prequel to the new BG series titled Caprica.

As if Battlestar Galactica could ever compete with Lost in Space.

    Thank God for Spock.
    Everyone was a Cylon.
Star Wars is a fairy tale.
What about Babylon 5 and the star ship Agamemnon?

You old farts just can’t appreciate the youthful excitement and adventure of an epic story. You old women love your space soap opera.

Who could ever forget the older sister Judy? As a kid if I had a VCR back then I would have been hospitalized for dehydration.
