Jim Harbaugh has gone 43-18-1 with the San Francisco 49ers. (USATSI)

If Jim Harbaugh does return to Michigan it appears he’ll be paid handsomely to do so.

According to multiple reports from Joe Pequeno and NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport, Michigan has offered Harbaugh the coaching job in Ann Arbor. Both reporters say the offer is for six years, though Pequeno says the contract is worth $49 million and Rapoport says $48 million. Either way, if accurate, Harbaugh would be the highest-paid coach in college football were he to accept, surpassing Alabama’s Nick Saban.

And the question is whether or not he would accept the offer. Harbaugh had a chance to take over at Michigan following the 2010 season but instead chose to leave Stanford to take over the San Francisco 49ers. It’s unclear whether or not Harbaugh, who many believe will leave the 49ers following the season, wants to return to coaching in college or remain in the NFL. If he were to return to college it makes sense that it’d be his alma mater he was returning to.

Earlier this week we went over the possibility of Harbaugh returning to Michigan, and why it would or wouldn’t make sense for both parties.

I’d rather he be in college.

    Harbaugh’s a good coach…for 3-4 years.

I think that allows him not to burn out his players in college and be really great at what he’s trying to do.

Plus, I don’t want to play any of his teams.

BONUS: His leaving will speed the demise of the 9ers.

    He burns them out.

You just can’t function at 100% all the time. Not organizationally, not execution-wise.

So, rather than bake in fail-safes, coverages (organizationally) and compensations, he just goes pedal to the metal until the lubricant of winning wears thin and the gears start to wear down….then start to catch…

SF’s engine is about to seize with all the friction.

We’ve got less lubrication from “winning”, but his management style applies so much torque that it breaks down the lubricant so that even with 3 straight NFC Championship game appearances and 1 SB appearance… all that “lubricant” has ALREADY been lost.

From a management perspective, it’s fascinating how not all success is created equal.

48 million seems kind of light. What is Urban Meyer getting from Ohio State?

It’s around twice as much as Meyer.

Meyer will become one of the highest-paid coaches in college football, along with Alabama’s Nick Saban and Oklahoma’s Bob Stoops and Texas’ Mack Brown. He was given a six-year contract that pays $4 million annually, plus another $2.4 million total in “retention payments.” He also can qualify for supplemental bonuses

I’d rather he coached somewhere other than the Big 10.

Harbaugh doesn’t even have to recruit. All he has to do is have someone on his staff who is a good recruiter. I would think with his record at University of San Diego, Stanford and the 49ers and his history as a pro QB and that he played for Schembechler at Michigan would pretty much sell it self to any kid.

The players love him, but this has to do with him not getting along with the people upstairs. The bosses per say.
