Moments after Donald Trump won the presidential election, Californians took to Twitter to make clear they want to secede from the United States.

“Calexit” has been trending on social media — reminiscent of the Brexit movement to leave the European Union — and some protesters are planning to assemble on the capitol steps in Sacramento on Wednesday.

The group leading the gathering is “Yes California,” a campaign which aims to put a referendum on the 2018 ballot to exit the nation.

Although Hillary Clinton won California with 61% of the electoral votes, she came up short to secure the presidency, and Trump managed to obtain 279 votes from major swing states like Florida, Pennsylvania and North Carolina, according to the Associated Press.

“We woke up feeling like strangers in a foreign land, because yesterday Americans expressed their views on a pluralistic and democratic society that are clearly inconsistent with the values of the people of California,” two California legislators said in a joint statement about the election results.

Some Californians showed their disapproval by igniting trash cans on the streets of Oakland and others chanted “Not our president” around University of California’s Berkeley campus.

“Calexit” supporters on social media who favored the movement had this to say about leaving the U.S.:

You have to be odd, to be number one.

Ha. Yeah, some of us around here have been hoping for years
that Texas would secede from the Union and become the Nation Of Texas.
And take their electoral votes with them.

Ecotopia, I remember reading that as a young lad. Might even still have it in a bookshelf in my basement. They would have to take the western part of Oregon and Washington with them.

If Texas seceded, the quality of our K-12 education would improve dramatically. It plays a ginormous, critically negative role in text books.

“We don’t want no critical thinking down here!”

Also, remember the Alamo? PoCs likely do. Mexico had abolished slavery in 1829. When Texas conquered that territory and took it away from the Mexican government — who had taken it away from Native peoples before that — slavery was reestablished. Encoded in law again, etc. Rather than being this glorious thing — Texas “independence” — it made life horrifically worse for tens of millions.

secession? eh. don’t know how serious this is, but separating oneself from people you disagree with seems a lil counterproductive… i mean we all have to occupy the same planet… for now.

As a Californian, I have to say I would love to have this conversation. I don’t think it is likely to go anywhere. The Texas secession movement has been going much longer, and hasn’t topped out above 10%. (And, actually, I would be satisfied with Texas seceeding).

Here’s the thing. We really have had no say in anything for over a century. Our primaries happen after the outcome is determined. And we aren’t a swing state in the general election. Because of the despicable electoral college, and the primary schedule, our votes don’t really matter.

Meanwhile, we send more money to Washington DC than we receive from Washington DC. We subsidize you bastards. Our economy is bigger than France’s. Without you guys, we would still be the sixth largest economy in the world, and would still be a world player. All while not having to put up with the Bushes and Trumps of the world. We would be richer without you, we would still have international prestige without you, and we wouldn’t have Clarence Thomas. We would be Canada with good weather, Silicon Valley, and Hollywood.

You guys can go on with your cro-magnon ways – without our money – and everybody is happy.

That would be great. CA has been self-destructing for 3 decades sending its refugees into the rest of the US while bringing the very liberal plague with them that forced them to leave. Seattle was ruined by it. San Antonio is under siege now. Keep “your” money since it won’t be the US dollar any more and it will soon be worthless. Good luck with those water projects too, especially the Colorado River which would be a shame to see much more of its water diverted in the north towards more domestic agriculture sure to occur in the event of a Calexit. People in Socal are already drinking their own urine so perhaps it will be alright?

Water is why they would have to bring the western half of Oregon and Washington with them.

Although I’m sure desalinization of seawater could also become a big industry.

I think the population would shrink dramatically and along with it the economy.

I think 90% of Californians would be against it, and the whole thing is ridiculous.

CA has been self-destructing for 3 decades

I think everyone should just – stand back – and marvel at the sheer awesomeness of that statement.
