    Ogletree trade

We trade a starting LB who recently signed a 5-year contract for a couple of picks?

Traded before his $7 million roster bonus kicks in on March 16. I believe there is no dead cap money to be applied here.

    Kind of strange, yeah.

Anyway in 2018 clearing out AO means they have dead money on him for 6.4 M and save 5.2 M.

I would say rignt now that that’s not enough savings to make this look like a slamdunk move.

a little confusing but keeping trujo and watkins for ogletree. to me i’d do it. then need to get joyner and donald signed to extensions.

wonder who they have in mind in free agency.

The #Rams are trading LB Alec Ogletree to the #Giants for 2 draft picks, source said. He was offered to the #Chiefs, too, but they declined. @AdamSchefter on it first.

I don’t see how we can maintain continuity after this.

i think it goes like this…scrolling farther down the spotrac website, it looks like this trade brings us $6.4 million in dead cap. That’s four years worth of his $8 million signing bonus over five years. Keeping Tree would have cost $3 million in salary, plus $7 million in roster bonus on March 15 plus the prorated part of his signing bonus $1.6 million? So it’s $6.4 million in dead cap and no linebacker vs. $11.6 million with Tree? that’s the $5.2 million difference you listed.

    Didn’t see this coming.

Does anyone think that getting rid of Barron is still a possibility? Lots of turnover already.

this play vs ATL still haunts me… Tree missed the tackle behind the line of scrimmage…., to me the turning point of the playoff game…. a forced punt here down 13-10 would’ve been huge for LA.

He can party with Janoris now.

    3rd and 9 at ATL 41

    (12:54 – 3rd) (Shotgun) M.Ryan pass short middle to T.Coleman to LA 45 for 14 yards (M.Barron).

his tackling could be very frustrating.

wonder if with all these picks the rams try to trade up. either higher up the first round or into the second round from the third.

I dunno. Sixth round picks do not have a lot of trade value to move up much in the first round or into the third from where we are in the fourth round. My guess is that Snead moves around a lot within the third and fourth rounds, and maybe deals on for a future pick in 2019. Gonna be an interesting draft!

    Well i think they have a hundred-and-thirty-seven
    6th Round Picks now.

So the thinking may be, “surely we can get a couple starters with that many shots at it.”

    Ya know.

Great. Now I get to watch him every week (if I choose to). Since I dropped DirecTV, just watching the local stations, which means lots on Giants, Jets and Patriots…

I see Barron going too. They were both undersized for a 3-4 (Barron more than O, but we’ll see how they backfill.

    I like it.

This one I did not expect.

Either Wade has lost it, or he completed his assessment over the past year and is jettisoning everyone who doesn’t fit his scheme.

I’m guessing they don’t pick up anyone really expensive in free agency and use the savings they acquire to front load a couple contracts to preserve some cap space over the next four years.

The defense may be a little rough over the first third of the year.

I am stunned. I saw this on my phone earlier, and couldn’t get here until now. You guys aren’t helping me. I need some explanation.

Tree isn’t my favorite player. He wasn’t going into my Ring of Fame. But he seemed decent. And I saw some upside still, since he was just moved to MLB.

So…I have faith in Wade. I think he knows what he is doing. Tree doesn’t fit his scheme. Okay. But…

    The Rams run a 3-4.

And right now, I’m not sure they even have 4 LBs on the roster. WTF? Quinn’s gone, and AO is gone now. And Barwin is a FA, and there is talk of not keeping Barron.

    Where are we now?

I mean…we have about a dozen picks in the 4th round now. Is the LB draft pool especially deep so that there will be 6 or 8 starters available in the 4th?

This move surprised me. But…uh…these guys have a track record of knowing what they are doing, so I will just sit here and wait for the next spectacle. I guess.

if it means keeping sammy watkins, i’m for this move.

also now i really hope they get leighton vander esch in the draft.

They do have some LBs though I don’t know how many of them are viable starters. The first that jump to mind are Longeacre (who needs to be signed), Littleton and Ebukam. Carlos Thompson gets some buzz. Their roster actually lists–without Quinn or Tree or Barwin–7 LBs. If they remake the entire starting LB corps, as apparently they are, that means they have to add guys of course but there’s some talent on hand, too.

Well…either these guys are big dummies, or they’re geniuses. They are bold.

If they keep Watkins and TruJo out of this, sign Donald, Gurley, and Goff…well…I give up Quinn and Ogletree and Austin for that. Yeah. I mean…some people have to go…and it’s only business to look at the size of paychecks, and who’s earning what. And Austin isn’t earning that salary, and Quinn is clearly on the downside, even if he can be a quality player for another couple of seasons. And Tree probably isn’t worth that money, though I am less sure of that one. I don’t know what Wade needs his linebackers to do, and what it costs for the guys that can do those things.

I just realized something. Wade’s 3-4 defense adds up to seven. His defensive scheme doesn’t use linebackers!

How often were we in a nickel or dime package? Most of the time we only had a couple of LBers on the field anyway.

I like the moves. I was a never fan of Ogletree and think the Rams should be able to find someone to match his production this offseason.

A couple of LBs I wouldn’t mind seeing the Rams sign next week: Nigel Bradham and Trent Murphy.

Bradham impressed me playing inside for the Eagles after they lost a couple lbs last year. He could probably match Ogletree’s production and wouldn’t cost too much.

Trent Murphy is an interesting replacement for Quinn. In his 3rd and best year, he had 9 sacks and 3 forced fumbles with Washington–so McVay and Joe Barry should know him–in 2016. He missed all of last year with an ACL he tore in August.

joe barry got a real close look at the linebackers and edge rushers this combine.

he’s gonna have a lot of input into how this draft goes.

I have to say that I liked Ogeltree but there were times when he just did not seem the right fit for this defense. Trust in Wade. Trust in McVay. Trust in Snead. Trust in the process. They know more than I do anyway.

I hope it works for the best.
